Who Will Be Crowned Champion?
Back for One Final Article This Season!
The finals are happening today, and as you read this, the champions for the Coed 1 and Women’s divisions of the Fall 2024 season will soon be crowned. In just a few hours, we’ll witness the culmination of a hard-fought season, and it’s been a pleasure covering the teams along the way. I’ve learned so much about their dynamics and the unique chemistry each team shares. It’s been an exciting journey, and we hope to see you all next season!
Looking ahead, Winter 2025 promises to be another big season. With no overlap from school sports, more players are free to join and compete recreationally. Next season, the women’s will feature two divisions with teams competing at their respective levels, making it a more dynamic and competitive experience. But before we get to that, let’s dive into today’s finals. Enjoy!
Quick note: Surprisingly, I ended up playing for both divisions, and my teams have made it to the finals. So, for this article, my predictions are based on the community votes from FPF’s Instagram poll. Thank you for your understanding!
Coed 1: Kiss My End Zone vs Fitsquad
Both of these teams have fought tooth and nail throughout the regular season and playoffs, and they’ve earned their spot in the finals. Kiss My End Zone barely edged out a 28-25 win over Aigre-Doux, while Fitsquad secured a strong victory in their semifinals.
Historically, Kiss My End Zone has had the upper hand against Fitsquad during the regular season, which gives them a slight edge in this matchup. However, Fitsquad has proven themselves to be formidable underdogs this season, and they’re determined to show they can compete with the higher-tier teams. This is shaping up to be a tight and competitive game. Both teams boast impressive speed and height, and ultimately, the outcome will depend on which quarterback makes the fewest mistakes and can read the defense more effectively. The teams know each other well, but with the stakes this high, there’s always the possibility of one team throwing a curveball and shifting the strategy mid-game.
Kiss My End Zone brings in Jimmy-Lee Janvier as quarterback — and he didn’t earn Quarterback of the Season honors by accident. Over the course of the season, he developed a deep understanding of his receivers’ strengths and learned how to exploit them game after game. When you have players like Felix Gerin-Lajoie, who’s nearly impossible to outrun, or Isiah Allard, who can out-jump almost anyone, why would you change your strategy? It’s a formula that’s been working for them all season long, and there’s no reason to fix what isn’t broken.
On the other side, Fitsquad knows how to play to their strengths as well. With a player like Laurence Pontbriand, who boasts remarkable height and can leap higher than most women in the division, it’s only natural to use her as a weapon every chance they can. Her size and athleticism give them a significant advantage in contested plays, and they’ll be looking to take full advantage of that today.
That said, while exploiting your receivers’ talents is crucial, it’s a strategy that can only go so far. If the opposing team figures out how to shut down those key plays, you’ll be forced to adjust your game plan. Fortunately for Kiss My End Zone, they have a versatile roster. In addition to their standout male players, they boast a group of skilled women who can also make an impact. Alexandra Falcon-Korb, for example, has the speed to outrun defenders, while Amélie Durocher’s quick cuts and deceptive moves make her a nightmare for defenders trying to grab her flag. Then there’s Marie-Ève Girard, the sneaky player who often goes unnoticed but knows exactly when to slip past the defense and find herself open in the backfield.
Fitsquad also brings depth to the table. With players like Alexie Galarneau, a rusher who brings intensity and focus to her role, and key defenders like Celestine Chartier and Salim Tayae, who are always in position to make crucial tackles, they have the tools to stop their opponents from gaining ground. It’s no coincidence that these players rack up so many tackles each season — they know how to break down plays and shut down offensive drives.
I’m really hopeful that Fitsquad returns to Coed 1 in future seasons. They’ve dipped their toes in this division, but Winter season is where they could truly shine. If they were to compete then, it’d be exciting to see how they stack up against even stronger competition.
Kiss My End Zone, on the other hand, consistently adapts their roster each season—keeping the core intact but switching up players depending on availability. Winter will likely bring a major challenge, but there’s no doubt they’ll be back stronger, with a roster ready to take the division by storm.
Instagram Prediction: Kiss My End Zone
Women’s Division: Subzero vs Vortex
As Moe rightly mentioned on Instagram, “This will be a phenomenal women’s final. Two of the best and most deserving teams.” I think a lot of people would agree on that as it is always fun to watch a challenging final. Right now, the team most capable of challenging Subzero’s dominance is Vortex. With some players from Cayenne joining their ranks, Vortex has added extra firepower to their squad, giving them a better chance to compete. This won’t be an easy win for either team—they’re both playing with the sole focus of winning.
Will it be a fast-paced game? Or will Vortex attempt to slow things down to disrupt Subzero’s rhythm? Will Subzero continue their dominance? So many questions remain unanswered, and that’s what makes this final so exciting.
Subzero has an impressive track record, playing with pace and precision. Quarterback Sara Parker is a key player for them—she knows exactly where to place the ball, often having a target in mind before the snap. When her primary options are unavailable, Sara adapts quickly and finds another open receiver, often resulting in a score. Defensively, Subzero plays physical football. They’re aggressive in coverage and have no problem knocking down passes, trusting their instincts to make plays. However, their physicality can sometimes backfire if they overcommit to certain routes, leaving them vulnerable.
Height is a significant advantage for Subzero, as many of their players are taller, giving them an edge in both offensive and defensive situations. With their strong chemistry and experience together, it will be tough for Vortex to find cracks in their game plan.
Vortex, however, brings a fresh and dynamic approach. Their quarterback, Sandrine Gobeil-Huot, brings years of experience—having played in the States and competed in tournaments outside Quebec. Sandrine knows what it takes to win big games, and she’s faced Subzero in the past, so she’ll come prepared with some surprises. Though Vortex may not have the same height advantage, their chemistry is just as strong, and they’ve built a cohesive unit that plays well together.
What sets Vortex apart is their adaptability. As a newer team, they don’t have the same long-standing routines as Subzero, which could work in their favor. They’re more agile in making in-game adjustments and don’t rely on the same playbook or strategies. This flexibility could give them an edge, especially in a high-pressure final. Vortex has the hunger to prove themselves, and their creative approach might be the key to unlocking Subzero’s defense.
Subzero presents a roster full of versatile players, each capable of contributing across multiple positions. While each member has their designated role, they are all well-equipped to step in for one another as needed. Their collective understanding of both offensive and defensive strategies ensures a cohesive, adaptable team. As highlighted on Instagram, Sabrina Gervais—this season’s 2-Way Player—has the spotlight in today’s finals. The big question asked: Can she lead her team to victory? Known for her prowess on both sides of the ball, Gervais has the potential to make a significant impact. However, it remains to be seen how she will execute her game plan and drive her team to triumph on the field.
On the other side, Vortex’s defensive strategy is guided by the exceptional Tamara Boulanger, whose play-calling is nothing short of remarkable. Her ability to adapt her defense and make adjustments when things aren’t working has been a key factor in her team’s success. Today, her tactical decisions will be crucial, and the support of her teammates in executing these strategies will be vital in stopping Subzero’s offensive threat.
Another standout for Vortex is Lauriane Beauchamp, a dynamic 2-way player who excels at both offense and defense. Her routes are precise and aggressive, and she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in pursuit of the ball. With her experience, Beauchamp has an innate ability to read the game, positioning herself in places where she’s most likely to get open. Her awareness and skill make her a key player to watch in this high-stakes matchup.
In the end, this final promises to be an intense battle between two teams that are evenly matched in different ways. Whoever wins will have earned it through hard work and strategy, and they’ll walk away with well-deserved pride.
Instagram Prediction: Subzero
Both finals are set to be unforgettable, and regardless of the outcome, each team has put in incredible effort this season. Best of luck to all the players, and we’ll see you next season for even more action!
