Weekday Quarterback (D5) – Finals Recap
Every game has been played and the dust has finally settled in what has turned out to be a great inaugural season for Division 5 in FlagPlus Football. Two teams came into the weekend looking to be the last one standing but unfortunately there could only be one. The Family, after a very stellar and consistent regular season, were able to pull it out and defeat the Cinderella-like Love Cows. For those of us who were at the Catalogna Soccerplexe on Sunday, we know how great a game we were treated to. It was an absolutely fantastic environment for the final game. Both sides had a fairly large crew of fans rooting them on, but as we all knew, it could not end well for both sides. The Family was just too much to handle on Sunday evening and was superior in all facets of the game.
The Family
Both teams performed well, but the difference maker was the same person who has proven to be the dominant force among division 5 players all season long. Family QB Maxime Forget was not just good; he was great in the biggest game of the season. Forget went 18 for 25 and threw for 223 yards and 6 touchdown passes. That is the definition of a clutch performance and he was rewarded for his efforts with the playoff MVP award. That being said, Forget clearly had a superior supporting cast compared to the weapons of the Love Cows. To add to his offensive performance, Forget had an interception on defense. He completely controlled this game. Florian Bouer was another excellent performer for the Family as he caught 5 passes for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns. Not to be out done was Maxime Couture. Couture continued to prove that he is one the most lethal weapons in division 5. Couture had 4 catches for 57 yards and 2 TD’s while also accumulating 5 tackles on defense. Where does the Family go from here?
It is clear that this team can compete at a higher level then division 5 and in order to gain respect they are going to have to move up and show other teams that they are for real. After speaking with members of the Family following Sunday night’s game, they made it clear that they would not be competing in the spring season of FPF but they will be playing together in certain outdoor tournaments. This should continue to build the chemistry of an already dangerous team that could come back in the winter and prove to be a dominant force in D4. Division 4 will have to be aware of this team next year because Maxime Forget and company will definitely be ready to compete. If this team adds a veteran at some point they could prove to be one of the more dominant teams in division 4.
Love Cows
Sunday night was a rough way to end the season for the Love Cows. They were noticeably upset with themselves after their performance and it left me wondering what will happen with this team in future. Will they be back in the spring? Will this team remain intact after such a disappointing performance in the championship? If they are to come back in the spring I do not believe that it will be the exact same roster and that is probably for the best because the Love Cows definitely need to upgrade their roster if they want to continue to win games. They had a very good run in the playoffs but it was evident to everyone on hand that they cannot compete with the best of the best in division 5. John Roveto gave the Love Cows a good performance in the championship game, 13 for 23 for 109 yards and 2 Td’s, but he could only do so much with a team that lacked the athletic ability of the Family. Kenton Lowe showed that he does not belong in division 5 and will most likely move up in the spring. Expect to see him on a team in Div B or C in the spring and most likely in Div 3 or 4 during the next winter season. He has the potential to be a great player on both sides of the ball for a team in the future.
Season Wrap Up
Sunday evening was a great way to close out the inaugural season of division 5. We had one dominant team that proved all season that they belong there and we had one team that shocked the world in the playoffs and knocked off every team that they were told would beat them. It may not have been the most exciting finish that we would have liked to see, but the journey is just as important as the destination and it was one heck of ride. Both these teams deserve a lot of credit for what they accomplished this season and they should keep their heads held high. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what the Love Cows did this season because every time someone told them they did not belong, they proved them that they could compete. That is what football is and should be all about. They did it with class and dignity and nobody can take that away from them. The Family came into the playoffs trying to prove a point after losing to the Sphinx for the conference crown. They were hungry and even though they struggled against Affreux in their first playoff game, they played the next two on the top of their games. They knocked off the team everyone thought was the best (Sphinx) and then they topped it off with a championship victory over a hot team. If this was any indication of what we have in store for Division D in the spring then it should be a great summer. It was great being a part of the action this season and I hope you guys enjoyed my articles as much as I enjoyed writing them. I hope to see you all in a few weeks for the spring season and if not, see you in the winter.
