Week 8, The Growth of FPF’s Women’s Division and Blame Covid for the Tardiness

Hey Div 4, we are in the dog days, or dog weeks of the FPF season. Luckily they don’t last too long, as the end of the season comes sneaking up behind us real quick. In fact, we are 1 month away, to the date (May 9th) from the 1st round of the playoffs – the Divisional Round! So it’s time to start gearing up for the playoffs! Many of you reading are pretty much already in a playoff grind, as you either see your team name highlighted in the dreaded red background color, indicating you are currently outside a playoff spot, or you are barely holding onto that last playoff spot. Others are atop of the standings and are coasting along, refining their offensive reps and bettering the defensive communication as you look to improve your game for the playoffs.

Before diving into the week that was, if you haven’t had the chance to catch any of FPF’s Women’s action, I would be the first to advocate you watch some of the talent they have to offer. We had one of Canada’s superstar QBs, Sara Parker on Calling The Audible this past week to talk about the Women’s division and it was a great conversation to get a better idea of what we as a league should be doing from the female’s perspective. Check it out from Minute 0:00!

On tap this week, we’ve got your Division Highlights, a Game Recap, Fantasy Team of the Week (new segment from last week), Power Rankings and Game Picks. So let’s dive into the week that was!

4A – Thoughts on the Division

  • I mentioned Big Fun got a big win last week, and impressively kept up with Small Giants to come away with a 38-38 tie; yet, they dropped in the standings into the 7th seed and are now on the outside looking in. They are in their toughest part of their schedule with TOPSZN and The Brotherhood in the next 2 weeks. Always an interesting question is whether that tie will help them or hurt them once they’ve played all 10 of their games.
  • Spera’s Cougars threw everything they could at TOPSZN and came away just short, losing 44-39. Defensively, they just couldn’t stop Brandon Parent, who finished the game with 7 catches for 130 yards and 4, count it, FOUR TDs!
  • Backyard Bullies did their job in Week 7, beating Hurley and Sons to claim the 6th and final playoff spot. Good thing too, because they’ve got 2 tough matchups coming up in Bruins and Small Giants.
  • I picked Stoics to win last week, and they did 🙂 Another crazy close game, this time against Centaures, who themselves drop another game by 1 point.
  • Centaures have dropped 5 in a row, but 4 of those 5 losses have been by a combined 7 points. They have been on the wrong side of incredibly close games. One play going their way in a few games and they would have a 4-3 record. Instead, they sit at 2-5. Luckily, they are in Conference B, as if they were in Conference A, they wouldn’t be in a playoff spot like they currently are.
  • Shhhh… do you hear that? That’s the Takeover train pulling some serious steam and have now won 2 in a row, the first time this season.
  • I can’t find the chat message on CTA, but Ryan Garber suggested that I’m not a believer of KGP Ra, even after watching them a couple of times. No way! Definitely a believer and think they will go 10-0 and are the favorite to come out of Conference A to make the finals!
  • Les Bleus Branleurs got their first win of the season. Olivier Pilotto had himself a game, 4 catches of 4 targets, 62 yards, 2 TDs, 4 tackles and 1 INT! They keep their playoff hopes alive with the victory.
  • Conference B is crazy competitive! While Takeover currently sit in the 2nd seed, they could easily lose the 1st round bye to The Stoics and could fall back to the 6th seed with a couple of losses, so there’s absolutely no time to underestimate any of your opponents!
  • Rahman Khan (The Brotherhood) is your sack leader (9 sacks) after 7 weeks. Jonathan Steinberg (KGP Ra) with 7 sacks looks to inch closer to the #1 spot, currently sitting with the 2nd most sacks.

4B – Banter and Ramblings

  • Honey Martin squeak by Voodoo in a close 25-19 game where Voodoo, after going 4-and- out in the redzone, still had 2 shots from midfield to tie the game. Unfortunately for them, they took the deep shot on the first of 2 plays that got picked off by James Langshaw.
  • Game of the week in 4B last week was Beer Belly Brigade against the then unbeaten Vultures. Beer Belly made a statement in 4B that their great season is no fluke. They’ve knocked off Vultures and earlier this season pushed The U to the brink, losing only by 3 points and sit atop Conference B.
  • Finessers have only lost 1 game in their last 5 (2-1-2) and now sit in 4th place after an 0-2 start to the season and being dismissed early by CTA media.
  • Surprise, surprise! Les Montagnards cruised to another victory, 39-26 over Mofos. Although, credit to Mofos, the score at halftime was 20-20. Offensively for Les Montagnards, everything is clicking and they are operating like a well-oiled machine, and while they can put up the points, I can see them losing by being caught in an offensive showdown. Finessers, you’re up next to try and give them a loss.
  • Isn’t it funny that when your season is against the wall and your struggling to find subs to replace your #1 receiver and key defensive component, that you end up winning your 2nd game of the season? That was the case for Peeze and Hot Sauce Sports. He came up huge, in a game where both teams promised they would try to score as many points as their respective Quarterbacks age.
  • Les Verges Folles rocked Sphinx, 51-0, a stat-padding game for LVF.
  • Eastside Boys got a HUGE win by beating a team they were chasing in Bandits. Too bad Emile Skaf could not be there, but now Manu Allard-Roy knows how hard the QB position is to play!!
  • Well, well, well, one Paolo Della Rocca is T-1st in the Passing Yard department, where he usually finds himself by season’s end.
  • Alex Fafard is completing 78.5% of his passes this season with a 132.1 QBR and adds 400 rushing yards to his resumé. He has done similar in the past, but that was Division 6, feasting on unathletic, inexperienced FPF teams. Now he’s doing it against seasoned teams that match his teams athletic caliber, so to post those #’s is ridiculous!
  • Luca De Gaetani, with his 12 sacks on the season is your sack leader after 7 weeks.

Game Recap

Hot Sauce Sports 39 – 33 Team Ethnik

Hot Sauce Sports: 39

vs.

Team Ethnik: 33

Before starting to describe this game, let’s set the stage with the rosters. Both teams were missing key pieces. For Team Ethnik, they were without David De Andrade and Louis-Philippe Paquette which account for roughly 40% (500 yards) of Ben Lawlor‘s passing yards (1260). Replacing them was Vladir Boursiquot. For Hot Sauce Sports, they were missing snapper Jean-Sébastien Roussy, Alexi Dubois and Yavar Ashrafi. Subbing in was Denzel Thompson and Mederic Lauzon. Luckily for HSS, they got those subs, because it was 6pm and Peeze was set to be playing defense! The game would have gone differently in so many ways if that was the case.

Not only that, as I was taking in the roster with the new players telling me their names, I found it strange that Peeze was not on the field. I mean, I didn’t think HE was one of the players needing to be subbed… but more on that soon.

Okay, let’s start the recap! The game started, well, exactly as I would have predicted, with Ben Lawlor going deep, and I don’t blame him! Marc-André Parenteau was left wide open on the first play of the game for the 40 yard bomb TD. The ensuing extra point was easily converted by William Bissonnette who had himself a game Wednesday night. As the TD and extra point were being played, I caught a glimpse of Peeze behind the endzone tying his laces. Phew, at least HSS would have their QB for their opening series.

While the team must have been happy to see Peeze arrive, after 3 incompletions that were aimed at the receivers playing on Field 1 (this game was played on Field 2), they may have been wondering if his head was in the game. True his nature though, HSS went for it on 4th and 10 from their 10, and the ball was somewhat prayer’d up for HSS #1 playmaker, Justin Blanchard, to make a play, and that he did. He came back and attacked the ball at his high-point, came down with it and classically added 5 extra yards with the his notorious speed for the 17 yard 1st down. After taking a sack to Sylvain Follenfant, Peeze would complete 4 passes in a row, including a key 3rd-and-9 conversion to Mederic Lauzon, as well as a 4-yard quick release TD to George Aifantis, his 1st TD on the season. While walking up the sideline to me, George would ask me:

“Did you get TD? I wanna make sure you got it in! That’s the first of the season!”

– #4 George Aifantis,- WR/DB

Before the start of the next series, as he approached the line, Will Bissonnette asked ref Conrad Keeble “Hey, those guys are wearing a bit a different blue” (Referring to the HSS subs), to which Conrad replied “Well it’s allowed now in the rules, but do you find it difficult to distinguish between your jersey and theirs?” Before he could give a straight answer, the ball was snapped, and Bissonnette ran a straight fly which, no one on Hot Sauce was able to keep up with, and caught the 2nd 40 bomb from Lawlor. I guess that was his answer to the question, and a pretty good one at that (though the question was questionable to begin with). And again, the XP1 seemed too easy to convert, as Lawlor hit Marc-André Parenteau for his first of 2 XP1 converts on the night. Score: 14-6 Team Ethnik.

After Lauzon got HSS to midfield on just 1 play, Justin Blanchard did Justin Blanchard things and took his catch 26 yards to the house, speeding by Ethnik defenders for 6. Since they were down 2, HSS would go for 2, but could not convert. As Conrad was placing the cones for the next drive, he whispered to me “looks like we’ve got ourselves a classic shootout.

And as Team Ethnik advanced the ball over several plays for the first time in the game now that the HSS was covering the deeps, they ended up at the 3 yard line, with 4 chances at the redzone. We all thought Ethnik would score, but HSS put a strong defensive effort and actually stopped Lawlor on 4 consecutive plays.

Starting on their own 3, the HSS offense was able to drive the field, including a drive-high 15 yard completion to Denzel Thompson. They got so far, but like Team Ethnik, they got into the redzone, but were unable to convert on 3rd and 4th down, and turned the ball over on downs. The drive didn’t end with a score, but did shift field possession and killed the clock + 1 play out of the final 5 before the half.

Things looked good for HSS, as the first 2 passes from Lawlor fell incomplete, leaving Team Ethink with 2 plays to travel 44 yards. And then, Will Bissonnette took a 5-yard sideline hook and scampered his way downfield for 28 yards. Uh Oh. And then? Yup, Lawlor hit Parenteau in stride on the post for a 16 yard TD strike, his second of the night. Plus he added his second XP1. It was a bit of a deflating TD, but I heard Peeze from the bench telling his team that it was no worry, that they were gonna get it back as they were starting the 2nd half with the ball.

Halftime score: 21-12, Team Ethnik in front.

The opening drive for HSS was notably led by Joey Notaro. The guy doesn’t get talked about enough. Everyone thinks speed on HSS and immediately think of Blanchard but Notaro has dangerous speed, and it was shown in this drive and the 2nd half. He had 2 receptions for 23 yards on the drive, including a TD, which was all speed, as no defenders could tackle the guy on his crossing route. Oh and Notaro added the big 1 point convert to make it a 21-19 game on a classic no-looker from Peeze.

Team Ethnik was quickly forced to go for it on a 4th-and-1 situation from their own 19, and Hot Sauce got the all-important stop as Lawlor couldn’t hook up with Parenteau. This was the exact opportunity HSS was looking for if they were to come back down 2 scores. After snapper Chadwick caught an easy route for 6 yards, Peeze would run, yes I wrote RUN, for 3 yards, as he attempted to get the first down with his legs. That run towards the sideline had me moving the EFF out of the way, as he was coming in like a train on its rails in a straight line direction. In Peeze‘s own words: “Oh yeah, I have absolutely no change of direction”, so good things for me, I bolted as quickly as I could. Okay, back to the game. 3rd down, and it was like a glitch in the matrix happened….Déjà vu! Joey Notaro once again scored from 10 yards out on a crossing route, where no one could de-flag the speedster, not even Will Bissonnette on a diving attempt. Conrad and I both asked each other, “Didn’t we JUST see this happen 3 minutes ago??” So now up 25-21, and I found it strange that Peeze asked to go for 1 (why be up 5 when you can be up by a TD?) but either way, the convert was no good.

It was time for Ethnik to step up after letting a 9-point halftime lead turn into a 4-point deficit. It started off well for Lawlor, as he connected with Afdaal Martin for a 19 yard first down on the first play of the series. But back-to-back incompletions to snapper Simon Dufort, and suddenly it was 3rd down. But like at the end of the first half, he was able to hit gold with Vincent Lajoie for a 21-yard TD strike down field to go back up by 2 points. The failed convert kept the score at 27-25 in favor of Team Ethnik.

With about 5 minutes remaining in the game, here’s where a play mentioned on CTA occurred. On 1st down from the 10, George Aifantis took a hook pass and moved diagonally upfield towards the sideline. He was in position to get tackled, but made a slight move to prevent that happening. From the opposite side of the field, it was a 98% chance that he was getting tackled, but I could clearly see him continue running downfield (to the endzone) with all 3 flags on his belt. And then a whistle. What I didn’t hear from my side of the field was that there was apparently a pop sound which was an added mark of confusion for the ref on the sideline. Combine the odds of 98% of getting tackled with a pop sound, and you get a whistle on the play that turns back a TD. And while the HSS team was definitely not in favor of the call, they weren’t boisterous about it, and in fact, scoring on the first play and handing the ball back to Team Ethnik with 4 minutes on the clock MAY have been a death sentence had Ethnik just chewed the clock and methodically drove upfield. In the end, Aifantis got a first down for 14 yards, putting them a yard short of midfield. And to make up for those lost yards, Aifantis once again went upfield for another 17, setting up Matthew Chadwick‘s 9 yard TD.

Score update: HSS: 31, Team Ethnik: 27. This time, there was no mistake about it, HSS were going for 2 to go up by 6, but were off the mark…. BUT WAIT. Roughing the Passer on rusher Sylvain Follenfant. That’s a 10 yard penalty that allowed HSS to go for 2 points from the 1-yard line. And? Unsuccessful 2 point attempt.. BUT WAIT AGAIN. Offside on the rusher, this time Vladir Boursiquot, which gave HSS a 3rd attempt at 2 points. And there’s only so many opportunities you can give an opposing offense if your Team Ethnik, and HSS finally converted. Joey Notaro with the huge 2 points to go up by 6, 33-27.

And remember, the Roughing the Passer penalty allowed them to go up to the 1, but the offside on the rusher penalty forced Team Ethnik 5 yards back on the ensuing drive. 1 minute left in the game. Here’s Team Ethnik’s 2 minute drill… 1st down: Nice and easy, Lawlor hit Dufort for 5 yards to gain the back the penalty yardage. 2nd down: Hit Will Bissonnette on the sideline hook. Watch Will Bissonnette scramble and beat the slot defender to the sideline before he could get tackled. Stare as Will Bissonnette makes an inside move, only to come back to the sideline, leaving defenders in his DUST as he claimed “Fastest moment on the field”, running at 18.8 mph as per FPF’s Next Gen Stats, powered by Amazon AWS. Game tied, 33-33. Here’s the chance for Ethnik to go up a point and pressure HSS to drive the field and score for the win. And?? The extra point was NO GOOD. Whistle blown. 5 plays remaining.

1st and 10, 5 plays remaining, 40 yards to the endzone: 9 yard completion to Matthew Chadwick.

2nd and 1, 4 plays remaining, 31 yards to the endzone: Incomplete.

3rd and 1, 3 plays remaining, 31 yards to the endzone: Peeze‘s 1st read isn’t there.. is pressured by the rusher, 2nd read.. a HUGE 23 yard completion down the left sideline, as Mederic Lauzon tip-toed the sideline inbounds, outstretched his arms for a beautiful completion. First down.

1st and Goal, 2 plays remaining, 8 yards to the endzone: Incomplete to Justin Blanchard.

2nd and Goal, 1 play remaining, 8 yards to the endzone: Well, let’s just watch the video, shall we?

Penalty on the last play (lol the flag landed on the other field!)

1st and Goal, 1 play remaining, 3 yards to the endzone: Let video magic tell the tale…

If you notice, there was actually a penalty as well on the last TD play of the game, but it was offside on the rusher, penalty declined, and as referee Leo Gervais would say, “and that’s the game!”

It was honestly a great game to watch, lots of points, lots of drama, skill on full display, 2nd and 3rd opportunities on penalties, pressure situations. Nothing more you could ask for on a Wednesday night in April; it was another FPF classic in the books!

MLS Week 20 Power Rankings: Zlatan delivers, Revs surge continues - Cincinnati Soccer Talk

4A Power Rankings (Prior to Saturday’s Week 8 games)

  1. KGP Ra (7-0) – Last Ranked #1: Beat out tough competition in Bruins last Monday and sit undefeated (spoiler alert, I think next week’s matchup may be difficult for them 👀).
  2. Blackouts (5-2) – Last Ranked #4: A sign of a good team is to not play down to your competition. Blackouts faced The Brotherhood without their starting QB in Quaysie and didn’t give Brotherhood anything on offense, and were able to hang 38 on ’em with Theo Ojeaha playing D.
  3. TOPSZN (5-2) – Last Ranked #5: I’ve talked about TOPSZN, but it’s time to start taking seriously as a Top 3 team in the div. They can score at will and have depth to the point where Charles Verreault is the #4 receiver on the team, damn that’s depth!
  4. The Brotherhood (5-2) – Last Ranked #2: Yeah, I know what your thinking… 1 loss without our starting QB and you drop us 2 positions? A loss is a loss, and it wasn’t even close. But also, ranking 2 and 3 are occupied by teams that won in Week 7. So it’s justified from a week-to-week ranking system.
  5. Small Giants (4-1-1) – Last Ranked #3: I’m a little surprised they let up 38 to Big Fun after seeing them play last week. Small Giants D seem to be operating in waves. 12 PA to Brotherhood, 19 PA to Bruins, but then 52 allowed to TOPSZN and 38 to Big Fun. The inconsistency on D has me tad bit concerned.
  6. Takeover (4-3) – Last Ranked #7: Here comes the Takeover offense, finding it’s groove. Oh, and when Ian Einheiber is a running a little late? No problem. Will Power: 2/3, 40 yards, 1 TD.
  7. The Stoics (4-3) – Last Ranked #8: The Stoics are feeling the offense, that’s 3 straight games with 30+ points, and converting three 2-point converts? Yeah, that helped a long way in getting the 1 point victory over Centaures!
  8. Bruins (4-3) – Last Ranked #6: Bruins put up a great fight against KGP Ra. Despite the loss, they are leaving Week 7 knowing they can hang with the #1 Power Ranked, undefeated team.
  9. Spera’s Cougars (2-5) – Last Ranked: #10: A Week 7 loss and they move up a spot? Look, they hung in there with TOPSZN in a score-for-score battle. If it’s not for a 4-and-out to open the 2nd half, the game could have been theirs. This is scary #6 seed right now if the playoffs were to start tomorrow.
  10. Centaures (2-5) – Last Ranked: #9: I love the guys, but this is your last chance! ANOTHER 1 point loss. These losses are heartbreaking! I can absolutely see another close game against Takeover… they better hope they come out on the winning side!

4B Power Rankings (Prior to Saturday’s Week 8 games)

  1. Les Montagnards (8-0) – Last Ranked #2: Ahhh, atop of the standings and now atop of the Power Rankings. Les Montagnards can do no wrong… right?
  2. Beer Belly Brigade (6-1 )- Last Ranked #3: (Iggy last week in the Power Ranking comments): “Let’s see how far they’ve come when they face Vultures tonight” Yeah, BBB is here to compete NOW and made it loud and clear. They are the favorites to come out of Conference B.
  3. Vultures (6-1) – Last Ranked #1: Tough loss, but now they can stop worrying about the perfect season and simply work on refining their plays and practicing making adjustments they will need to do for the playoffs.
  4. The U (5-1) – Last Ranked #4: Easy win against Los Locos, nothing new to report here.
  5. Honey Martin (4-3) – Last Ranked #5: Close game against Voodoo, but pulled out the victory. That’s 2 in a row.
  6. Les Verges Folles (5-3) – Last Ranked #7: Spanked Sphinx. Doesn’t mean much, next!
  7. Team Ethnik (3-4) – Last Ranked: #6: They should have dropped more than just 1 spot after losing the way they did to Hot Sauce Sports this past week. The defense has to step up and first and foremost stop giving the other team 2nd and 3rd chances! That said, I think they would beat the teams below them in these Power Rankings.
  8. Eastside Boys (3-3) – Last Ranked: N/A: They’ve now won 2 in a row and find themselves in a playoff spot. I’m approaching them with some cautious optimism though: It took them some time before getting into the game vs. Mofos and they beat a Bandits team without their QB only 18-6.
  9. Finessers (2-3-2) – Last Ranked: N/A: Did you think the Finessers were down and out after Week 2? Enter Week 8 and they sit in the 4th seed in Conference B! Pretty sure this is their first crack into the Power Rankings, so congrats! They have a tough test against the unbeaten Montagnards, but let’s see how far they’ve come since the start of the season.
  10. Mofos (3-3-1) – Last Ranked #8: Hey, I said last week that if they wanted to be taken seriously, they would have to stay competitive with Les Montagnards. The score at the half was 20-20. I’d say they were right in the thick of things. If it’s not for a 10-yard penalty by Arthur Dagenais to make it 4th and long and put Sanogo in a tough spot, the game could have been closer. Facing The U in the last week, they need the wins against Voodoo and Los Locos to secure themselves a playoff spot.
