Week 7’s recaps, awards, rants and some exciting Week 8’s previews.

Take control.

Technically speaking, we’re 7 weeks in. In reality, we’ve got 4 games left to play. Not a single team is neither out nor has clinched YET. All of that can change THIS weekend. Take control.

Win out; you’ll make it in. You all still have time to redeem yourselves; make the most of it. I’m excited to see it play out.

As of next week, I’ll be posted official playoff standings with possible tiebreakers. For now, it’s a bit too early to really look into it and draw scenarios, but expect it by next Friday with this week’s outcomes.

But for now, let’s get started.

Week 7

Division 4 is slowly taking shape and I can say that it’s turning into what I expected it to be. Powerhouses are piling up W’s to enter the playoffs on a high note and lower seeds are making strides. Hit the ground running; there’s very little time left.

Thoughts of the Week

  • I hate to see teams post “0” points. I’ll exclude Bruthers from this mention, although they are a different kind of disappointment.
  • Yannick Doston thinks he looks better than me in shorts. Ya, okay, Yannick.
  • Way to step up and perform, Vince Nardone.
  • For the first time, ever, I saw a QB hit one of the lamps in Lachine. Yes, those lights hanging from the ceiling next to the wall. Yes, he threw a football intended for a receiver and got a lamp.
  • I’m getting called out for a lot of things now. I guess it comes with the job.
  • Favorite call so far this season: “Yo, Simon, saw that? Yeah, I’m THAT good. Mention me.”
  • It’s closely followed by “Will you pick us yet?”
  • I feel like I get so much more readers when I name drop a bunch of players. Then again, everyone reads my articles, so…
  • I was discussing the famous “5 celebrity allowed cheat list” with a few buddies. I guess it’s not a popular Quebecer thing, but still. My #1 will forever remain the same, although she’s a playboy model, Sara Jean Underwood is absolutely perfect. Here’s her instagram, enjoy.
  • It’s also how I got to know the future Lara Croft. She’s also pretty special. Hit her up (figuratively, boys. We don’t actually hit women…)
  • Songza’s closed now. Has been for a few weeks. I’ve always been more of a Spotify guy myself, but I still find it shitty to see good competition die randomly.
  • I’ve had way less thoughts this week than I normally do. I guess thinking’s overrated.
  • Blame it on Midterms week. Really.
  • By this point, I expect all the “under the radar” teams have been uncovered and pointed out. With 6 weeks played, I expect to have figured out this division and the team it holds.
  • If, somehow, you feel a team’s much better than what I’ve been describing, feel free to hit me up; we’ll discuss just how wrong you are.

Players of the Week

Division 4A

  • Sammy Feder (Coyotes): Another impressive night for Sammy Feder who posted, once again, ridiculous numbers concluding the night with 7 TDs and 134.5 QBR.
  • Maxime Giroux (The Fellowship of the Ring): Called him out to step up and, well, he took over the game by himself. At some point, he had 130 of his QB’s 140 yards. He killed 69ers.
  • Jacob Peterson (BearSkins): His team needed a spark and Peterson took over the 2nd half with dominant numbers to pull away from R4D and get his team a much-needed W.

Division 4B

  • Jeremy Cola (Keyport Lock): Monster night for Cola who got 2 Interceptions on defense and 3 TDs on offense.
  • Vincent Alessandrini (Sandlot Saints): Alessandrini showed up to help his former team and, as dominant as he could possibly be, finished with 4 TDs and a pick. He’s that good.
  • Cory Kennedy (Friends with Benedicts): Kennedy ran free for most of the night finishing with 3 TDs, 2 interceptions including a pick-six. Yes, he’s a stud, but he had an impressive night.

Recaps

Division 4A

  • Warhawks took on Broccasion in the week’s opener and their defense simply wasn’t able to restrain Cerantola in the pocket as he blazed through defenders for 112 yards and 2 TDS on the ground alone. The Bros’ offense kept moving the chains and their defense made just enough stops to force Mallette in uncomfortable situations most of the night. For once, Broccasion’ bizarre I-formation was highly successful as Warhawks weren’t ready to face multiple running backs and it was the key to their success. A night to forget for Warhawks, quite simply.
  • Playground took control of their game against TCO last week right from the start and took a strong option on the Win before half time. Hovington’s first few throws were quite horrible, but he was back to his usual self on the 2nd drive and Playground’s offense hit the ground running against a lack lusting defense. With a comfortable lead, Playground took a step back and TCO (gaining momemtum from Tim Bondoux’ late arrival) seized the opportunity to create a comeback. Making key stops and scoring on back to back drives gave TCO hope late in the 2nd, but Hovington managed to move the chains one last time to maintain a 5 point-lead and turn the ball over with only 1 play left for TCO to try the improbable hail mary. We all know how the story ended, but TCO actually showed teeth in the 2nd half which could propel them to a win by the end of the season!
  • The Fellowship of the Ring took on 69ers late on Saturday and Maxime Giroux was quite fired up. In fact, he took the matchup against Demetriou to heart and simply showed us all how good of a player he really is. With 130 of his QB’s 140 yards in the first 3 quarters of the game, he was TFOTR’s offense entirely and simply obliterated any opposition. Demetriou was plagued with bad luck as he batted down two balls into receivers’ hands in the endzone and simply looked a step too late on most of the throws. Harbour’s night was one to forget and Fellowship of the Ring finally got their 2nd win of the season.

Division 4B

  • Keyport Lock took the field against Vnation this week and Kormendi had his first bad week as Keyport Lock’s defense found its groove and exceeded expectations. Rosenblatt was fire in the first half connecting with everyone left and right, but his 2nd half numbers weren’t as impressive (granted, the game was basically over by then and he was, most likely, trying out new things). Due to his recent numbers, there’s no possible way to doubt his production. Vnation’s Julien Rivest had another monster night, but he seems to be the only light on his team and it’s hurting their chances. Someone else needs to step up for Vnation and it needs to be happening now before it’s too late.
  • Crimson Tide took on Show me your TDs in hopes of staying ahead of the curve and the game was as close as I predicted it would be. In fact, both teams exchanged scores and stops, but at the end of the day, the game was decided on the very last PAT. Down by 7, Addona took his offense out on the field, marched, scored and decided that going for 2 was the right decision (A tie sucks, good call, regardless of the outcome). He couldn’t connect with his receivers and had to walk off the field with another L rather than a big upset over a favorite, but the way SMYTDs battled shows they can take on the best in the division head-on. Do not underestimate their accomplishment.
  • Les Affreux faced off against Mud Dogs on Wednesday night and things weren’t going the way neither teams expected. Mongeon-Duby was firing lasers on the field, but simply lacked accuracy down the stretch and Lemieux’ offense was struggling to move the chains against a tough defense. Laberge emerged for Mud Dogs to end the first half and never looked back as he torched the defense in the 2nd half to give Mongeon-Duby a weapon to rely on moving forward. Martin Jackson was the only light on offense for Les Affreux and things aren’t looking oh-so-good for the men in red offensively. Their defense has been up to par, but the offense needs to score more to remain in contention.

Power Rankings

Division 4A

  1. Les Maloudes (6-0-0): As dominant as ever.
  2. David Hurley, Pet Detective (6-0-0): A close win against a lower seed remains a win.
  3. Coyotes (5-1-0): Feder posting numbers week-in and week-out.
  4. Backyard Bullies (5-1-0): Even without Humes, they perform excessively well.
  5. Broccasion (5-1-0): Not the prettiest win, but they allowed Cerantola to run and he RAN.
  6. Still Teamless (3-1-2): Another tie, really…?!
  7. 5-Star (3-2-1): A tough loss for 5-Star won’t see them drop just yet.
  8. Frosty Bronsons (3-2-1-): The Bronsons are back in the Rankings !
  9. Bruthers (3-3-0): A very stupid forfeit. This team’s talented enough to win even without Dion.
  10. Eskimo Brothers (3-3-0): Eskimo Brothers showed they can compete with any given team. Can they keep it up?

Division 4B

  1. The U (6-0-0): A very close game, but The U remains undefeated and our #1 seed.
  2. Crimson Tide (5-1-0): Their closest win so far. Crimson Tide aren’t as dominant as we’d expect.
  3. Friends with Benedicts (5-1-0): The full roster is scary.
  4. Keyport Lock (5-1-0): Another week, another impressive victory from Rosenblatt and co.
  5. A-Squad (5-1-0): A-Squad punished their opponents last week to step up to 5-1. Well done.
  6. Mud Dogs (4-2-0): After two impressive weeks, Mud Dogs entered the Rankings with good seeding too.
  7. Longhorns (4-2-0): The loss stings, but Longhorns will bounce back.
  8. Sandlot Saints (4-2-0): If Alessandrini is back full-time, Kraemer finally has the weapon he needed offensively.
  9. Suicide Squad (3-3-0): Suicide Squad bounced back perfectly after last week’s loss. Possibly the biggest darkhorse of D4B.
  10. Les Affreux (3-3-0): I haven’t given up on Affreux just yet.

The Chase

Division 4A

Les Maloudes: Chasing past Recipe 4 Disaster as Les Maloudes’ defense carries them past Applebaum. Beauchamp will have too much time to find receivers with Ryan Aridi’s absence still lingering over R4D’s head.

David Hurley, Pet Detective: Chasing past Broccasion in a game that will be decided by less than a score. I believe Cerantola will make a fatal mistake whereas Hogan will strive, but it will end in a barnburner.

Division 4B

The U: Chasing past Mud Dogs in a game that will be much much closer than most would anticipate. In fact, Mud Dogs’ speed will square off nicely against The U’s and, at this point, Mud Dogs are the toughest matchup The U will have from here on out.

Division 4A

The Head to Head

  • Eric Bishara (David Hurley, Pet Detective) vs Kyle Lebofsky (Broccasion): Granted, they won’t line up in front of another, but we’re comparing production / stats after all. Bishara has been the favorite to carry his offense while being one of their best defensive studs whereas Lebofsky is their top playmaker by a long shot. With a playoff preview on the line, who ‘ya got?

Position Matchup

  • Simon Duchesne (Jagerbomb) vs Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren (TOPSZN): In this week’s QB duel, we have two QBs fighting for a playoff spot and that cannot afford a loss. Without an impressive performance, they’ll sink their own ship. Who’s stepping up?
  • Alex Sepasi (BearSkins) vs Kevin Marcil (ZOO): Two speedsters facing off in this week’s rusher duel. Sepasi has bigger stats, but Marcil has been MIA recently. With a sudden return and facing a tall pocket QB, he’s got an uphill battle ahead of him. Will Sepasi walk away winner?
  • Steve Sanner (Backyard Bullies) vs Justin McLean (Still Teamless): Both players lead their teams in receiving stats. Both plays are known to be matchup nightmares and create distortion. This very week, who’ll have the biggest impact?

Division 4B

The Head to Head

  • Paul Santache (Smash Bros) vs Jeremy Cola (Keyport Lock): Both players are very known commodity in FPF and have had success at different skill level. Now leading their team on both sides of the ball, their team leans on them to perform and set the tone. Who’ll set it the loudest?

Position Matchup

  • Franck Ngandui (Suicide Squad) vs Jeremy Pelletier (Crimson Tide): Both receivers weren’t their QB’s favorite target coming into the season, but I guess they’re the kind of athlete that grows on you? They’ve become absolute studs for their team. Who’s streak will live on?
  • Jean-Mathieu Vidal (Bromigos) vs Soryha Tum (J’s) : This week’s rusher duel involves one of the division’s best against a less known player who’s made some noise when his team really needed him to. With playoff implications on the line for both teams, who’ll have the biggest stats line?
  • Jeremie Mongeon-Duby (Mud Dogs) vs Dustin White (The U): FPF is an offensive, QB-based league. This week’s duel involves two of the division’s best going at it. With a win, Mud Dogs could qualify for the playoffs. The U needs to stay undefeated to maintain the #1 seed. Who’ll crack against a top tier defense?

Previews

Division 4A

  • Backyard Bullies will take on Still Teamless in Humes’ return and we’ll see just how efficient he can be under center when his drives are limited. In fact, Still Teamless bags a lot on efficiency and doesn’t give their opponents many possessions (except last week I guess). If the Bullies defense can keep showing how gritty they really are week-in and week-out, I expect this matchup to get out of hand fast as Brown’s receivers won’t be creating enough separation to help their QB. Look out for another stellar night from the Bullies.
  • After an embarrassing loss to Maloudes, ZOO are literally fighting for their lives this week against a streaky BearSkins. Simply put, ZOO needs to win to have a playoff chance whereas a loss will most likely disqualify them from contention whereas BearSkins needs a win to remain relevant in the race, but a loss wouldn’t necessarily end their season right there. Etinson needs to build from last week’s 2nd half performance and gain some sort of momemtum before their final stretch and ZOO is the perfect time to do so. ZOO’s inconsistency under center as plagued them and they need to find a solution before it’s too late.
  • This week’s game of the week in D4A has to be Broccasion against David Hurley, Pet Detective. The undefeated team facing the 1-loss team late in the season will define playoff seedings for most of their conference. As of late, Broccasion have been enjoying a steady offense helped by a playmaking defense and their team hasn’t looked this good in a while (although they play with very few players) whereas DHPD has been losing momentum since the first few weeks. Hogan isn’t the same as Bishara under center and it’s been showing; losing Hogan as a receiver is huge and their team doesn’t look as strong without Mathew in the mix. Nonetheless, DHPD has enough talent and depth to overcome the recent loss and keep striding. The only question is, can they keep Cerantola in the pocket?

Division 4B

  • All Black are coming off their first win of the season fighting for their lives facing off Local 89ers who also pulled an upset and are fighting to add numbers in the right column to stay relevant. All black should have the athletism to keep up and make moves on Local 89ers, but Steve Crompton has been finding ways to feed Larivière and keep his offense striding. With the playoffs just a few weeks away, this could very much be the game both of these teams look back upon and regret not winning when they are left out in 4 weeks time.
  • Suicide Squad are facing one of the division’s best in Crimson Tide this week and we’ll see how both QBs can perform when the “easy” 40 bomb is off the board. In fact, Pinsonneault relies a bit too much on his accuracy down field and his players’ ability to get there to keep pounding experienced teams like Suicide Squad with the same old song and dance. Lubin’s defense will adjust and Pinsonneault will need to show he’s got good underneath plays; which I believe he does. It’ll basically come down to whether Lubin can keep up with Pinsonneault’s production and which QB will find ways to score as both defenses will be making stops and backing their QBs all night.
  • This week’s game of the week has Mud Dogs facing off The U in a battle of pure speedsters. In fact, both teams rely heavily on their speed over most other factor and that’s why this matchup is simply brilliant. Expect Proulx-Garcia to be in White’s shorts all night and forcing awkward throws as his defense will adjust to Lattimore and White’s 1-2 punch. If Mongeon-Duby can find his accuracy down the field and exploit defenses the same way he has for the past 2 weeks, we could have one of the biggest upsets of the season on our hands.

Picks of the week

Things are finally starting to turn in my favor as Doston loses this week’s matchup by 1 point. His 13/23 (8/12 D4A, 5/11 D4B) falls to my 14/23 (8/12 D4A, 6/11 D4B). The gap closes to 5 points! I know you guys are all rooting for me secretly, I appreciate it.

May the prediction Gods help me and curse Doston.
