Week 5: The short week

And they were 4 (Again)

4 undefeated teams, by default, because they haven’t played since this last article. One will fall this weekend. Guaranteed.

Let’s get started

Week 5

Lonzo Ballers looked like their week 1 selves, The Sheriff showed they’ve got a Tier A defence, SMYTDs continue to improve offensively, POP finally scoring big and Keyport Lock edged out a win; not bad for a short week!

Thoughts of the Week

  • It was a short week, but not a real bye week. I miss FPF’s bye week.
  • No one enjoys Defensive SuperBowls. Sure the Patriots played a hell of a game and Belichick coached a clinic, but it’s not what the audience wanted to see.
  • So Barry Bonds can’t get into the HOF because he MIGHT have done steroids, but it’s okay for Julian Edelman though? C’mon.
  • A shorter version of my article as most teams haven’t played since Week 4.
  • Worry not, my midseason report will come next week with everyone having played 5+ games. I gotchu Division 4!
  • Thank you everyone for the kind words since Thursday night!
  • I would never have guessed preseason that the game between The Sheriff and Air Force 1 would turn into a defensive battle with a 19-6 outcome.
  • With Lonnie Johnson at QB, Lonzo Ballers is an absolute juggernaut.
  • Past Our Prime finally has their offence together, but I do feel like their defence continues to slack a bit; can they figure it out before week 12?
  • Some weeks Don’t Mess With Texas is an offensive juggernaut. Other weeks, they can’t seem to gain first downs. Will they rectify before it’s too late?
  • Jagerbomb finally looked like themselves in week 5; just needed Jonathan Brown at the helm.
  • There is no doubt, looking at Les Hommes de l’Ouest play, that Philippe Carrier eats QBs for a living.
  • A lot of good games in 4A this week that will affect next week’s Power Rankings.
  • MTL Originals vs The Infantry is by far the best game in Division 4 this week. And it’s going to be VERY chirpy.
  • That one-hander INT by Vince Nardone on Wednesday was probably one of the best catches of the year. Real Hall of Famer play right there!

Recaps

  • SMYTDs vs Les Hommes de l’Ouest: Over the last few weeks, Les Hommes de l’Ouest struggled offensively, which, in turn creates too many opportunities for their opponents to score and results in bad outings. This week was no different as SMYTDs got many opportunities offensively, with good field positioning and Mike Addona carved up the opposing team. There is some talent on Les Hommes de l’Ouest, don’t get me wrong. Snapper Vincent Hamel is a real baller and Alexandre Poulin-Rioux is a known playmaker in FPF, but the D-Line turned QB Philippe Carrier is struggling under center and the drops left and right really aren’t helping their cause. In a tough division with 5 difficult games ahead of them (Les Hommes de l’Ouest have a NASTY schedule, by the way), this might just be one of those seasons for them where they try new things and improve looking ahead to Spring 2019.

  • Fun Boys vs Keyport Lock: A more defensive game that I would’ve assumed, both teams seemed off rhythm early in the game only scoring 6 in the first half. Both offences moved the chains time and again, but struggled in the redzone. It felt like Fun Boys held the ball offensively the most, but simply couldn’t punch it in when it really mattered. Boris Balourd made some huge plays (2 key sacks in the RZ that forced 4th and long) and really kept Scott Mironowicz contained for most of the game. With a key pick-six from Kyle Smith just after half, Fun Boys looked ready to take the game by storm, but Keyport Lock answered and, suddenly, Keyport Lock were up 13-12 after the convert to Jad Aridi. Late in the 2nd, Fun Boys drove the field, scored and took the lead 18-13, but failed to convert their 2-point attempt with minutes left. Keyport Lock kept their cool, Jeff Rosenblatt connected with a handful of different receivers and scored with 5 plays in the game. Not sure why they would attempt the convert, but anyways. Fun Boys were down 19-18, 4 plays left and got themselves in good field positioning. With one last play to win it, the botched snap went over Scott Mironowicz’s head who simply couldn’t even touch the ball and the game ended on a bittersweet note.

Players of the Week

  • Craig O’Brien (Past Our Prime): 232 yards, 6 TD and a 133.9 QBR. Essentially unstoppable last week.
  • Raphael Ducas-Lapalme (Don’t Mess With Texas): 10 receptions, 134 yards, 3 TDs and 2 sacks. He never gets tired.
  • Steve Sanner (BD Bandits): 9 receptions, 142 yards and 3 TDs. Maybe we should consider double-covering him?
  • Lonnie Johnson (Lonzo Ballers): Although he had an interception in this game, he still threw 59 points on 8 TDs. Monster performance.
