Week 2’s recap and a look ahead at Week 3’s action

Two weeks.

Two weeks has gone by since FPF kicked off Winter 2017 and The Picture in division 4 couldn’t be cloudier. In fact, my Power Rankings are in complete shamble and I have no idea who to call contenders and pretenders at this point. I LOVE IT.

I’m not one for super long intros, you guys know me, so I’ll keep it short: Keep impressing me, I’m out there watching.

Let’s get started.

Week 2

With many teams turning the tide and showing big in week 2, it’s only a matter of time before I either talk about your team. Whether it’s positive or negative, that’s all on you. If you play well, I’ll see you, if you play bad, I’ll see you.

Hopefully, I’ll only see the first one.

Thoughts of the Week

  • With players like Simon Bosquet Beaudoin, Francis Lapointe, Maxime Verna-Gagné and Samuel Phaneuf, I have no idea how Aztec Sasquatches are 0-2. I’m officially OFF the bandwagon.
  • This new D3 writer makes us look like amateur with his squeeky clean articles. I’m not sure where to go from here.
  • Brent Callender showing some old teammates he can still ball defensively with 2 picks this week. I see you, Brent.
  • What’s going on with 5-Star? A bad slump?
  • Another week, another QB for Les Maloudes. Hopefully Anthony Beauchamp-Frezza will be back sometime soon.
  • I called out Patrice Lindor this week and he got a pick-six in both of his games (D4 and D5). I guess working out his legs paid off!
  • Green Lantern Corps needs, well, a superhero.
  • Not a great week for the Mashtoub brothers in D4B; Rod with drops, Sam with no speed. I’m not sure whether I’ve just cursed myself or not.
  • It was a great week for Qbs in D4B; not so much for defenses though.
  • That Division 4 Podcast with GM Kolethras and Alex Holowach is, somehow, better this week. WHAAT?
  • Blue Chips are on the up and coming. I’d hate to play these guys week 3.
  • Gotta love those new jerseys Backyard Bullies.

Recaps

Division 4A

  • Aztec Sasquatches took the field with SBB to begin the game as he showed up late against No Name on Wednesday night and it showed. In fact, both offenses struggled to get anything going all night. Neither Michael Roy nor James Goulet played well and their offenses were stuck in Neutral. With a 6-0 lead at halftime, it’s tough to hype your own offense, but No Name lost 0 hope and got the job done. Johnny Symonds managed to break multiple tackles and find his way into the endzone to propel No Name past Aztec Sasquatches late in the 2nd; a lead they’ve managed to conserve the rest of the way. An ugly game? Yes, but a win’s a win.
  • Bruce King Bat Candussi looked good for most of his showdown against Nobodies as Gotham Knights fell 32-25. In fact, up until late in the 2nd, I believed the comeback was possible, but poor tackling skills and a lack of preventive defense (seriously, Steven Legault ran like 2 routes and got 129yrds and 4 Tds…) costed them the W. Jeff Brown looks like a perfect fit for GK and Mikey Candussi continues to have an excellent season as he puts up another 2 Tds on the career board. Highlight of the game? Seeing Byron Archambault put Chris Rivest on SKATES and taking it all the way to the house. Who knew big man could still dance?

Division 4B

  • Game Changers saved themselves from embarrassment (being favorite and starting 0-2 is rough) and managed to pull ahead late against Rancerz this week. In fact, Anton Sakiz seems to have quite the rust to shake after being a few months away from football and it showed once again this week. Rancerz’ defense continues to impress, but their offense simply isn’t clicking. Nonetheless, with a 19-12 lead, all they had to do was take it home, but Game Changers had a different point of view. After hitting the touchdown, GC decided that ties were no fun and went for 2. Sakiz to Filteau; game, set and match. Moving Justin Filteau from rusher to safety was ballsy, but it’s been paying off dividends so far.
  • A-Squad took on the J’s late on Sunday night in Lachine and it was a great game from start to finish. In fact, Yacoub Telemaque and Hai Minh Luong came out to play as both Qbs were having great first halves. Sadly, the 2nd half took a very different turn. With very little time left, A-Squad rallied offensively to score the go-ahead TD and needed a strong defensive stop. After much debate, they made changes defensively and Rick Cummins showed up big for his team with a mid-field interception. Yacoub Telemaque put the game to bed with a late TD and went up by 7. With very few plays left, the J’s offense simply couldn’t compensate and walked off with a tough L to swallow.
  • Get Off My D expected a very close game against Mean Machine on Wednesday after last week’s performances, but Daniel Goloff wasn’t as focused as he should’ve been that late at night. In fact, after scoring on his first possession, most of us expected the game to be a serious barn burner, but Sam El-Mashtoub’s interception early in the 1st half changed the pace completely and Daniel Goloff simply couldn’t connect with his receivers no more (either over throwing, missing them or a bad case of drops). Get Off My D’s offense kept scoring and kept grinding the field as Jeff Rosenblatt continues to enjoy his brand new toys and putting up numbers weekly.

Players of the Week

Division 4A

  • Rich Humes (Backyard Bullies): With his eyes set on the trophy, Humes tossed for 244 yards and 8 Tds in Week 2. The only thing he didn’t get? A perfect QBR (157.1 is still impressive).
  • Maxime Côté (Bad Case): With 4 Tds, 81 yards and 1 pick, he’s making me look good out there. It’s all him though.
  • Shawn Steen (Eskimo Brothers): 89 yards, 2 Tds and 3 interceptions. Hot damn.
  • Steven Legault (Nobodies): 129 receiving yards and 4 Tds; can someone cover him please?

Division 4B

  • Jeremie Mongeau-Duby (Mug Dogs): With 4 passing Tds, 2 picks defensively (and one was for 6), we can say that his return didn’t go unnoticed.
  • Jack Zergiotis (Obamacare): 267 yards passing, 8 Tds. What a week.
  • Simon Duchesne (Jagerbomb): With 307 combined yards and 7 Tds, he was unstoppable Wednesday night and made his opponents pay dearly.
  • Jean-Félix Marquis (Falcons): In their season’s debut, Marquis showed up huge with 95 receiving yards and 3 Tds. Expect more to go his way.

Power Rankings

Division 4A

  1. The Tide (2-0): When offense isn’t unstoppable, their defense steps up. Great win.
  2. Still Still Teamless (2-0): Last week’s struggle wasn’t SST’s weakness, but showed they can play against the best. Well done, boys.
  3. Backyard Bullies (2-0): There’s no stopping Rich Humes this year.
  4. The Commission (2-0): Sean Avraam and co. not only got the win but are undefeated this year. Hot start.
  5. Frosty Bronsons (2-0): Keeping your opponents to 6 points is an impressive feat. The Bronsons are the real deal this season.
  6. Les Maloudes (1-1): If they can solve the revolving door at QB, maybe they’ll climb my rankings again.
  7. TOPSZN (1-1): Impressive game against the #1 seed. Alex Holowach’s prediction is looking a lot less silly now.
  8. 69ers (2-0): Another week, another win. The boys are looking better and better!
  9. Junkyard Dogs (1-1): They’ve shown they can ball with the best in the division. Let’s see if they can keep it up now!
  10. Flying Weasels (2-0): Squeaked out a close one this week to remain undefeated.

Division 4B

  1. Mud Dogs (2-0): Mongeon-Duby’s return makes this team even better than they originally were. With is quite scary.
  2. The Alpha T’s (1-0): Last time I checked, these guys were undefeated. Still are.
  3. Get Off My D (2-0): So many offensives weapons, so little time to feed them all.
  4. The U (2-0): This week’s massacre just proves how strong they actually are.
  5. Obamacare (2-0): Oh boy. That’s a lot of stats right there.
  6. A-Squad (2-0): Even in an offensive shutout, A-Squad can hang with the best.
  7. Jagerbomb (1-1): If Week 2’s any indicator, business is boomin’.
  8. Team Ethnik (2-0): It’s not always perfect, but winning is all that matters. Team Ethnik’s defense continues to impress.
  9. Gators (1-1): Hopefully, it’s nothing but a bad week.
  10. Rancerz (0-1-1): I’m not off the bandwagon just yet.

Division 4A

The Head to Head

  • Jamil Springer (Big Tds) vs Shawn Steen (Eskimo Brothers): Two great competitors will go head to head this week. I expect both guys to give it their all; it’ll be an amazing matchup to watch for 60 minutes.

Position Matchup

  • Joel Malkin (Nonna’s Sauce) vs Dany Ostiguy (Flying Weasels): Leading their team after two weeks, both of these receivers will need to have, yet another, big game to elevate their games. Can they do it?
  • Steve Sanner (Backyard Bullies) vs Patrice Lindor (Golden Flashes): With interceptions last week, both of these Dbs are looking to make another impact in week 3. Who’ll show up?
  • Alex Holowach (Frosty Bronsons) vs Hugo Allamanno (Junkyard Dogs): Both #1 on their offense, both with big games this week. Who’ll have the biggest impact when the final whistle blows?

Division 4B

The Head to Head

  • Jack Zergiotis (Obamacare) vs Jeremie Mongeon-Duby (Mud Dogs): This week’s game of the week is, without any doubt, this showdown right here. Can these two Qbs limit their mistakes and remain undefeated?

Position Matchup

  • Vinny Gualano (Gators) vs Josh White (The U): In one of this week’s best games, two of the best are going at it. What kind of impact can we expect from these two guys this week?
  • Marc-André Paradis (Rancerz) vs Rod Mashtoub (Get Off My D): In a battle of Dbs, both higher division players will have to cover twice as much field as usual if they want to succeed; who you got?
  • Jake Titleman (Mean Machine) vs Mathieu Fafard (Sphinx): With both teams looking to bounce back from last week’s game, their QB will turn to their favorite target to get the engine going.

Picks of the week

What a letdown. Entering the week with a +2 over Yannick Doston was marvelous, but now we’re back down to equal after a petty performance. I guess I won’t breeze through this one, huh.
