Week 2 Recap: The Power Rankings Change

The Fall 2024 season continues to deliver as Week 2 brought fireworks, surprising results, and dominant performances. Some questions from Week 1 have been answered, but new ones emerge as the season takes shape. The Braves secured a statement win over The Jamesons, while Mangoose showed they’re not to be taken lightly by taking down Poseidon’s Kiss. And as the Kangaroos rested, the competition heated up.

Week 2 Power Rankings

  1. Kangaroos 🦘
  2. Braves ⚔️
  3. The Jamesons 🥃
  4. Poseidon’s Kiss Mangoose 🟢
  5. Mangoose Poseidon’s Kiss 🔱

1. Kangaroos (2-0-0)

Bye Week but still dangerous.
The Kangaroos took the week off, but their dominance last week keeps them in first place. With Daniel Lazzara at the helm and the lethal wide receivers, their offence is a scoring machine. The Week 5 clash between the Braves’ defence and the Kangaroos’ offence is already circled on everyone’s calendar as the highly anticipated matchup of the season. Can the high-flying Kangaroos break through the Braves’ stout defence?

2. Braves (2-0-0)

Statement win. Relentless defence.
In a highly anticipated revenge rematch, the Braves demolished The Jamesons 52-12. The defensive unit was nothing short of unstoppable, led by the incredible performance of Gabriel-Charles Dabe Champagne, who added another 3 interceptions to his season total, bringing his Week 1 and 2 tally to a mind-boggling 7 INTs. Dabe Champagne also turned 2 of those INTs into touchdowns, further cementing the Braves’ status as the top defence in the division.

Offensively, the Braves didn’t need to rely on their passing game as much this week. Jonathan Maheu was only asked to throw 15 passes, completing 11 of them for 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. But it was the defence’s dominance that dictated the pace. James Drysdale was the standout receiver, only being asked to catch 4 receptions but producing an efficient 110 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The real question now? Can anyone score against this defence. With Isiah Allard pressuring the quarterback and Dabe Champagne’s ball-hawking skills, the Braves might be the most complete team in the league. We could see them first place in the power rankings sooner rather than later.

3. The Jamesons (0-1-0)

Back to the drawing board.
The Jamesons suffered a brutal loss to the Braves, falling 52-12. Despite being one of the most respected franchises in FPF, their performance so far has been far from championship-caliber. Scoring only 6 points in each half, their offence looked sluggish, and the Braves’ defence made life miserable for quarterback Jeff Rosenblatt.

The Jamesons need to regroup quickly, they’ll face the undefeated Kangaroos in Week 3, and if they can’t find a way to reignite their offence, they could be staring down a 0-2 start.

4. Mangoose (1-1-0)

The Vincent Anctil Show.
The return of Vincent Anctil made all the difference for Mangoose, who took down Poseidon’s Kiss 26-14. Anctil was the MVP of the game, with 6 catches for 97 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with 3 interceptions on defence. His performance turned a tight 7-6 halftime lead into a comfortable second-half victory.

While quarterback Nicolas Schaefer played mistake-free football with no turnovers, he did miss a few key fourth-down throws. As the season progresses, Schaefer will need to sharpen up to keep pace with the top-tier teams. Gabriel Drapeau-Zgoralski, also showed promise, contributing with clutch catches and an interception. Mangoose is growing into this 5v5 format, and they’re not to be underestimated.

5. Poseidon’s Kiss (0-3-0)

Flashes of brilliance but more needed.
Poseidon’s Kiss had their moments but ultimately fell to Mangoose 26-14. Owen Bujarsky and Jaylan Greaves have been leading the charge offensively, but they need more help from other playmakers. Juwan Edghill, a savvy route runner, needs to be more involved, and Poseidon’s Kiss should find ways to get Rocco Christiano into space, as his ability to make plays and his elusive skillset remains under-utilized in this offence.

Defensively, Poseidon’s Kiss was close to creating turnovers, with both Bujarsky and Edghill almost snagging interceptions. Despite the loss, there’s plenty of potential, and if they can fine-tune their offence and defence, they could turn their season around.
