Week 10’s recaps, awards, random thoughts and a look at what Week 11 offers

The Final Week.

It is upon us, ladies and gentlemen. The final week of the regular season is here; the time most of us has dreaded for as long as we can remember. For some of you, it also means it’ll be your last game until, at the very least, May. For others, it’s the last time you get to lace up and practice before the real season begins.

I’m proud to say that, so far, D4 hasn’t been the host of lame forfeits. We came close, must I say, but we never faulted and we got ourselves on the way to a “perfect” season. Make me proud boys.

Let’s get started.

Week 10

Another week of upsets. Oh, do I love this division. Thank you for making it all possible. With ZOO shocking their opponent, No Name wrecking havoc, J’s showing up after many weeks of slumber, 69ers finally ballin’ and so on, I must say, I’m happy I picked D4.

Thoughts of the Week

  • Way to go ZOO. That’s how you end a season.
  • I feel like a high-five simply isn’t enough to show No Name some love. They needed the win and pulled off a miraculous upset. Well done.
  • BearSkins top Broccasion? Wow.
  • TCO fielded, yet another, team of misfits and guess what? Misfits can play too!
  • TOPSZN had one of the craziest finish of the season. Hoytes-Charles called himself out and guess what? He came through, again. Freakin’ Akeem.
  • 69ers decided it was time to live up to their potential, finally.
  • Recipe 4 Disaster needs to stop having ties. It’s getting ridiculous.
  • Special shoutout to my boy Kevin Lubin for recording 4 rushing TDs in 6 attempts and notching a 2-pt convert with his legs. Told you you could still run.
  • Serious props to J’s for pulling the biggest upset of the week in 4B. Just when you thought they were out, guess who clinched with the win?
  • Smash Bros edged Affreux. Sadly, it was little too late, but I see you!
  • Red Sharks are in total disarray as Balls Deep makes a push.
  • I’ll be cheering for Mud Dogs in Conference A, trust me.
  • Vnation is on FIRE and coming out of nowhere. Really happy for these guys.
  • As the season comes to an end, I’ve never got so much feedback; Thanks guys.
  • I know I did a better job than Moe Khan, but it was his seat all along, so I HAD to give it back.
  • I decided to trust others with updating the standings this week. I guess that was a mistake… Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • I’m sitting here, writing this article, watching March Madness and, somehow, Michigan State decided they couldn’t care any less. So I had you guys in Final Four and you decided to lose First Round? Yeah, thanks… Douches.
  • Dear God, 4A has AMAZING matchups this week. I’ll be at the fields for most of them, lucky me.

Players of the Week

Division 4A

  • Raphael Ducas-Lapalme (Warhawks): 141 yards receiving is impressive by itself, but combined with 3 TDs makes a monster week. Ducas-Lapalme is showing everyone he can ball with the best.
  • Shea Harbour (69ers): Combining for over 300 yards, 7 TDs and a single interception will get you noticed, everytime.
  • Patrick St-Amand (ZOO): With their full roster finally in place, St-Amand was able to impress with 4 TDs and a pick on defense. It was time.

Division 4B

  • Anthony Addona (Show me Your TDs): With this week’s 3 TDs and 3 Interceptions performance, Addona puts himself on the map for 2-way player of the year. I must say, the double hat-trick is ABSOLUTELY crazy.
  • Jeff Rosenblatt (Keyport Lock): 9 TDs, no picks and 280 yards. GODDAMN. Here I thought his 8 TD last time was impressive…
  • Kevin Lubin (Suicide Squad): When you struggle to move the chains, use your legs. Lubin did just that rushing for almost 100 yards and 4 TDs. Absolutely crushed the defense with ‘em hips.

Recaps

Division 4A

  • 69ers finally decided to show up for a FPF game and ball the way I expected to for 10 weeks. In, what most expected to be a sure-win from Still Teamless, turned into quite the performance from the 69ers’ offense. Shea Harbour was on point as he connected with his three favorite receivers and HAD A NIGHT. His first pass went to Dean Demetriou on a slant-turned-into-40bomb. The rest was history. Still Teamless’ defense looked avid and lost as 69ers kept piling up numbers the entire game. Lonnie Johnson was having trouble getting anything going as he threw for 3 costly picks although he managed to grind the field most of the time. If Harbour can have the luxury of 3 receivers balling every week, the triple-head monster will become famous once playoff comes; we’ll just have to wait and see how it performs in Week 11 before we get all hyped up.
  • In the best game of 4A, The Fellowship of the Ring faced off against TOPSZN in a “lose and you are out” scenario. Without being too impressive, both offenses put up numbers and drove the field adequately for most of the night. Down a score, Mercille had to make magic happen and did just take using all his weapons and giving TOPSZN’ defense headaches. Climbing back from a 7 points deficit to turn it into a 7 points lead heading in the last 5 plays, TFOTR were looking quite comfortable giving Gilbert-Knorren (who had thrown 2 INTs prior to this drive) only 5 plays to save his season. Well, guess what? After a drop by Thomas-Gordon on what will be called back due to DPI, Gilbert-Knorren finds his man on a scramble play facing 2 rushers in the back corner; Kevin Donnet for the 6-point! And we had a game. Down by 1, season on the line; TOPSZN goes for 2. Hoytes-Charles lines up wide against Deschambault. Runs the hook in front of the endzone. Gilbert fires a BULLET towards Hoytes’ chest, Akeem steps towards the ball and the step was gold as Deschambault’s arm dove forward put TOPSZN’ seasoned receiver had a firm grip on the ball. Back pedaled into the endzone slowly as the defender stared at the ground, in shame. TOPSZN got the 2-point, the win and get to fight for their season once again. HECK OF A FINISH.
  • Cougars took the field on Wednesday night with their season on the line facing a Bruthers’ squad in need of a win to clinch berth and maintain a chance at the 2nd Iadeluca had a good night, but Eric Rapps had a bigger one as he soared for 4 scores and over 100 yards in a night that saw Bruthers’ full roster and full strength emerge. With Rapps, Laflamme, Tajfel, Mikelberg and O’Brien in the lineup, Bruthers are a deadly bunch and although Cougars fought tooth and nail to gain the lead, they couldn’t overcome the way Mikelberg’s offense adjusted in the 2nd half to reach the 40-point mark and cruise to the 2nd seed of Conference B. One can only wonder what could’ve been if Tony Testa would’ve been part of the roster on Wednesday night.

Division 4B

  • Suicide Squad took the field against a depleted Renegades team who were forced to split players with their D5 farm team that was playing at the same time, but at the end of the day, the way Suicide Squad played left very little doubt in my mind who would’ve won either way. Kevin Lubin took the field after one too many weeks of suffering from a bad case of the drops and decided his legs were still good for something. Lubin finished with 4 rushing TDs on 6 attempts for 92 yards and also got a 2-pt convert. I mean, honestly, he RAN the tables. It’s one thing to get 100 rushing yards, but it’s another to put up 26 points (more than your opponents) solely by running. It was impressive to watch (and a bit ridiculous). It also saved their season and catapulted them into good seeding for the playoffs. Renegades will look back thinking what could’ve been with their actual roster at hand, but it’s part of the game. A tough season for a better-than-their-record team in Renegades.
  • In one of the most exciting game to be part of and to watch, Longhorns suffered a tough loss to, well, me. With Rob Allen scoring on the last play of the half on a MONSTRUOUS one-handed catch in the back of the endzone where, well, no human could’ve reached to put it 19-12, Friends with Benedicts’ morale was looking poorly. Starting with the football, Longhorns lost no time putting it at 25-12 and making me look bad. In an attempt at coming back, we scored, but so did Moodie on his following possession and I felt like the game was already over at 31-18 into the 2nd Offense went into hurry mode and getting 2-pt converts allows us to close the gap to less than a score. Leading by 5 with less than 2 minutes to go, Moodie took shots deep, but couldn’t connect and was forced to punt giving 6 plays to his defense to hold the fort after Cory Kennedy made a superman PD. Slowing down for the first time in the 2nd half, we scored, declined convert and gave Moodie 2 more plays to win this. Going for Rob Allen on the last play (who did catch it by the way), he fell short of a few yards for the endzone and Allen couldn’t walk in as the entire team swarmed his flags. FWB walked away victor.
  • Mean Machine (or however we want to call that team of subs) took on Mud Dogs and we got to see just how good Mud Dogs really were when facing higher division talent. Well, the answer is what we expected; pretty darn good. Although Eli Saleh managed to make plays with his legs when his arm wasn’t sufficient, Mongeon-Duby was always a step ahead of him and kept the lead their carved in the first half to the final whistle. Mud Dogs showed poise and a gritty defense against more-than-talented defenders and receivers to lock themselves in the top 3 of the standings and make a push for the 1st Hopefully, Mean Machine’s normal roster will be back on time for the last game of the season as their 3-week hiatus could cause serious mishaps when playoffs come knocking, IF they make it in.

Power Rankings

Division 4A

  1. David Hurley, Pet Detective (9-0-0): The last undefeated team sits atop the mountain.
  2. Coyotes (8-1-0): Firing on all cylinders day-in, day-out, Coyotes are in for a heck of a game this weekend.
  3. Backyard Bullies (8-1-0): Can anyone slow down the Bullies?
  4. Les Maloudes (7-1-1): A bad loss as them dropping a few seeds. Can they recuperate before the playoffs?
  5. Broccasion (6-3-0): Another close loss. I’m not sure how tough the Bros really are.
  6. Bruthers (5-4-0): Staring down the 2nd seed in Conference B, Bruthers are looking good this time around.
  7. Jagerbomb (5-4-0): Jagerbomb, once again, are peeking at the right time.
  8. Eskimo Brothers (5-4-0): They need to be more consistent if they want to make a deep playoff push.
  9. 5-Star (4-4-1): Everyone has bad nights; doesn’t mean they are bad teams.
  10. Recipe 4 Disaster (4-3-2): Another tie, really boys?

Division 4B

  1. Keyport Lock (8-1-0): The best record and the best differential in the division gets to sit atop the mountain for another week.
  2. Crimson Tide (8-1-0): Tide is looking better as the weeks go by. Scary thought.
  3. Mud Dogs (7-2-0): One of the most complete team in 4B. I’m happy they aren’t in my conference.
  4. Friends With Benedicts (7-2-0): On the nights the defense isn’t up-to-par, the offense shows up big.
  5. The U (7-2-0): A tough loss sees them drop a few.
  6. Longhorns (6-3-0): Moodie had a 7:0 ratio and somehow lost. These guys are the real deal. Plus, Rob Allen’s an actual giant.
  7. A-Squad (7-2-0): That record doesn’t stand for nothing. These guys can ball.
  8. Show me your TDs (5-4-0): SMYTDs are finally starting to look like the hype we’ve been giving ‘em.
  9. J’s (5-4-0): After a bad slump, they managed quite the upset. Well done.
  10. Sandlot Saints (5-4-0): With everything on the line, Saints need to win next week. NEED TO.

Playoff Standings

As many of you know, it’s that time of the season again where I tabulate the Playoff Standings and let you guys know what is up. Yes, these are official, no they aren’t made up like my Power Rankings. They will be kept up to date regularly. Enjoy.

Interesting notes regarding the playoff standings:

  • The playoff picture is finally getting slightly clearer, but nothing is set yet.
  • Affreux could still jump in with a win over Keyport Lock this week if Red Sharks, Balls Deep or Suicide Squads loses theirs.
  • Mean Machine needs a win to get in and a loss from either Golden Flashes, Hooligans or VNation.
  • Still Teamless needs a win and a loss from either No Name or 69ers to make it in.
  • D’s Nuts needs a win and a loss from No Name to make it up to Point Against.
  • TOPSZN needs a win and a loss from either Team Ethnik or BearSkins or Frosty Bronsons to make it in.
  • Most teams have their faith in their own hands. Time to step it up.
  • Backyard Bullies and Coyotes will face off for 1st Loser gets 3rd (which isn’t that bad of a consolation prize)
  • Maloudes cannot get any higher than 2nd seed, regardless of this week’s game.
  • David Hurley, Pet Detective are locked as first seed. Congrats.
  • With Warhawks on their tail, Bruthers needs a win to guarantee their 2nd seed status. They’ve clinched regardless.
  • A-Squad’s week 3 victory over Mud Dogs could come in handy to maintain their 1st seed next week. They are guaranteed first seed with a win this week.
  • Longhorns are locked as 2nd seed in Conference A regardless of their week 11 game.
  • There could be a lot of movement in 4B Conference B by the end of Week 11. It all starts at 6 Saturday!

The Chase

Division 4A

David Hurley, Pet Detective: Chasing past Les Maloudes as they will be crowned the only undefeated team in D4A.

Awards

With one week left, I decided to go over the 4 possible awards and give you guys a picture of who’s running the show and who could play spoilers this week. Hopefully, this will give extra incentive for guys running at titles to give their 110% one last time. Here it is.

Also, this is highly subjective as I’m only part of the committee who votes. Runner-ups could change with Week 11’s games, so fight it off boys!

*Don’t forget, if a player plays the same position in a higher division, he isn’t eligible for awards.

**A player cannot win two awards. It’s relevant for the 4B awards where Anthony Addona could win Receiver of the Year, but I have him at 2-way, so he’s not in contention for ROTY. Etc.

Division 4A

  • Quarterback of the Year: Sammy Feder (Coyotes) and it’s not even close.

Runner-Up: Rich Humes (Backyard Bullies), Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren (TOPSZN)

  • Receiver of the Year: Jacob Peterson (BearSkins)

Runner-Up: Kevin Smuda (Coyotes), Justin McLean (Still Teamless)

  • Defensive Player of the Year: Gordon Hogan (David Hurley, Pet Detective)

Runner-Up: Dean Demetriou (69ers), Shawn Steen (Eskimo Brothers)

  • Two-way Player of the year: Shawn Steen (Eskimo Brothers)

Runner-Up: Andrew Langburt (Coyotes), Kevin Smuda (Coyotes)

Division 4B

  • Quarterback of the Year: Chris Pinsonneault (Crimson Tide)

Runner-Up: Jeff Rosenblatt (Keyport Lock), Mike Addona (Show me your TDs)

  • Receiver of the Year: Maurice Dykmans (J’s)

Runner-Up: Julien Rivest (VNation), Oliver Laberge (Mud Dogs)

  • Defensive Player of the Year: Eddy Lee (Hooligans)

Runner-Up: Steven Legault (Friends with Benedicts), Fernando Massa (Hooligans)

  • Two-way Player of the year: Anthony Addona (Show me your TDs)

Runner-Up: Corey Williams (Balls Deep), Rob Allen (Longhorns)

Division 4A

The Head to Head

  • Steve Sanner (Backyard Bullies) vs Andrew Langburt (Coyotes): This week’s head to head features two 2-way monsters. With similar size and speed, I expect nothing less than both players matching up against one another the whole night. Who’ll make the biggest impact when the game’s on the line?

Position Matchup

  • Steve Hovington (Playground) vs Fred Mallette (Warhawks): Oddly similar in playing style, Hovington will take on Mallette in this week’s QB battle. With Playground officially out of the race, all they can do now is play spoilers to Warhawks’ chances. Expect a heck of a duel.
  • Corey Oliver (Eskimo Brothers) vs Matthew Labranche (69ers): I constantly talk about the #1s, but these guys can ball just as much as any given player. In a much-needed win for their teams, both these guys will have to be THE factor. Who ‘ya got?
  • Francois Raymond (ZOO) vs David De Andrade (Team Ethnik): In this week’s defensive battle, two of the division’s best defenders will try to shut out receivers and QBs altogether. ZOO is trying to save face and Team Ethnik’s trying to stay in the playoffs. Nothing will be taken for granted.

Division 4B

The Head to Head

  • Yacoub Telemaque (A-Squad) vs Mike Addona (Show me Your TDs): Although we could debate this doesn’t count as Head to Head, Yacoub will rush Addona, so not only is a QB battle, but also a rusher vs QB battle, so it counts. Plus, I make the rules. Expect Telemaque to give Addona headaches for the entire hour.

Position Matchup

  • Jeff Rosenblatt (Keyport Lock) vs Jonathan Lemieux (Les Affreux): As Les Affreux try to get over the slump and make the playoffs, Rosenblatt fights for QB of the year and 1st seed; expect both QBs to be on their A-game.
  • Steven Legault (Friends with Benedicts) vs Corey Williams (Balls Deep): Two athletic and speed freaks will most likely man up on each other most of the night, but for the sake of this argument, we’ll look at their defensive performance as Legault attempts to tally INT for Defenive player of the year and Williams fights for 2-way of the year.
  • Maurice Dykmans (J’s) vs Dylan Catellier (Smash Bros): In Smash Bros’ last game of the season, expect their receivers to go all out and finish on a positive note. J’s have clinched but are looking to improve and it all starts with their best receiver; Dykmans.

Previews

Division 4A

  • I’ve been hyping this game all season, so I kinda have to stick to it; Les Maloudes taking on David Hurley, Pet Detective. Regardless of the past few weeks, these are the two best teams of Conference A going at each other’s throats. Maloudes are in a slump and need this win BADLY. Another disastrous loss would send them into the playoffs ass-first and could see, said ass, booted too soon whereas DHPD plays to win and stay/remain perfect. DHPD could survive this loss, but Maloudes most likely will not. Expect the best defense in the division to stand tall and make Frezza look uncomfortable in the pocket; can he find ways to move the chains when his usual strategy isn’t working? Stay tuned. Do not expect a high scoring affair.
  • Recipe 4 Disaster has Ryan Aridi back, but they’ve struggled last night as they faced size in Warhawks. This week, going against a red-hot No Name team, they’ll face a whole different kind of beast. I’m as surprised as anyone to talk about No Name’s success, but their defense is one of the division’s best in the past few weeks and Grizzley will score given one too many opportunities; it’s not the prettiest football, but it works. They have the momemtum, they’ve started clicking at the right time and are facing a team on the edge of a slump in R4D; in other words, huge upset warning lights. Can No Name pull, yet another upset, over a favored’ head?
  • Coyotes are taking on Backyard Bullies in the best game of the week. Unless key players are missing, there’s no way this game isn’t absolute FIRE. The best offense against one of the best defense. Two of the top 3 teams in the division and they match up perfectly. Smuda will give Coyotes size over Bullies, but Bullies’ defense will take away Feder’s speed and Langburt’s ability to get open. Humes finds ways to score regardless of the defense he faces and this might just be a preview of the Conference Finals in 3 weeks time. Sammy Feder will not be reduced to less than 30 points, so it’ll be up to Humes to be creative and find ways to keep up. With the right tools in place in a matchup that has, well, very little meaning, I could see Feder excel and have a night to remember.

Division 4B

  • Vnation have been on a roll as of late, but their roll isn’t quite the same as the one Mud Dogs have been on. Facing each other this week, Mud Dogs will show everyone just how deep and talented this team really is. In a very probable week 12’s matchup, Mud Dogs will get to scout and impose themselves upon the lower seed in an attempt to gain 1st VNation finally figured things out and will get a chance to test themselves against the division’s best before the real season begins; something most would wish they could bargain for. Kormendi has come a long way from the season’s beginnings and his offense is finally starting to see someone else than Julien Rivest emerge and make plays. I expect this to turn out into a good offensive game.
  • Crimson Tide have been on a serious roll (see what I did there) recently and will take on a struggling Red Sharks’ team. On paper, this is a fantastic matchup in which Red Sharks’ talented defense will, most likely, take away Tide’s top receivers and force Pinsonneault to be creative with the football and branch out of his playbook. Sadly, in reality, it’s a much different story; Red Sharks’ defense hasn’t been that stingy as of late because their offense gives away good field positioning and are forced on the field way too often. If Begin can play safe with the football and reduce the amount of possessions Pinsonneault will have in the game, his defense could, maybe, make a play or two and allow him to gain momemtum and a win heading into the playoffs. Red Sharks are in a must-win scenario as a loss could see them falling out if things don’t fly their way.
  • Keyport Lock could secure the 1st seed in Conference B with a win. On the flip side, they’d fall down to 3rd seed with a loss, which is also pretty good standings. This week’s opponent will prove more valiant than last few weeks’ as they face Les Affreux in a must-win scenario. Affreux are out with a loss and will fight tooth and nail to make this game go in their favor. Rosenblatt will face one of the division’s best rusher in Daniel Bellefeuille, so I expect KL’s offense to see its foot off the pedal for the first time in a while which should give Lemieux a shot at keeping up and, maybe, upsetting the highly favored Keyport. If Lemieux can do his thing and play safe, I could foresee Bellefeuille earning the gameball at the end of the night for his boys.

Picks of the week

Another week, another disappointment. With similar scenarios in 4A, Doston’s impressive 4B’s performance allowed him to steer away with a point and grow closer to the title. He’s leading me by 4 points with only one week left to play. It’s do-able, but Imma have to go BOLD this week. Let’s do this.

May the prediction Gods help me and curse Doston.
