Week 10 Article – A Last Playoff Spot Up For Grabs

Alright this is it… 7 teams have wrapped up their season, leaving 6 teams and 3 games still left to play, of which, 2 teams are fighting for their playoff hopes. The 2 teams, Les Centaures and Mangoose, are currently on the outside of the playoff picture, looking in, with EZW in the last playoff spot. EZW will be anxiously waiting the final score for both games, to see if they will be playing in the play-in round of the playoffs or not. The Mangoose-Sheeeesh game ends at 10 pm on Thursday Sept 2nd while the Centaures-SHIT game ends at 11pm in Brossard, so if they REALLY wanna know if they made it in real-time, they could travel to Brossard and watch the final 20-25 minutes of that game. Crazy how the schedule makers made the final week in Div C so important for the playoff race, it’s like they knew in advance.

Division Headlines, Season Comments and Playoffs

Here are some general divisional thoughts:

  • Blessed took down The Infantry’s perfect regular season from them in the final week of the season! And damn, beating them by 11 points too!
  • Both Blessed and Infantry now have several days off with a Bye in Week 11, are exempt from the play-in round on September 10th, and will resume activities on September 13th.
  • Blessed will now have home-field advantage for the entirety of the playoffs.
  • Les Gros Coqs ended their season on a 6-game streak without a loss (a loss-less streak?), going 5-0-1 in that span and can only finish as low as the 5th seed. Back in my July 24th article filled with GIFs, Les Gros Coqs were 1-3, out of the Power Rankings and outside the playoff teams. Way to turn your season around!!
  • On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Blue Dreamers ended their final 6 games with a 1-5 record after starting 3-1. Blue Dreamers will drop from their current #7 spot, but depending on who wins between Top Sauce and Silent Ticklers in Week 11, Blue Dreamers could fall as low as into the 9th seed.
  • Blessed end the season as the highest scoring team with 381 points, an average of 38 points a game… averaging 6 TDs a game… more on this later…
  • Corey Walwaski eclipsed the 2,000 passing yard mark on the season; the only QB to do so in Div D. Congrats!
  • Adam Rosen (16 TDs) will look to surpass Marvin Steinberg (17 TDs) as the Division’s Touchdown reception leader in his final game against Top Sauce.
  • Marvin may be the leader for 2-way player of the year. 500+ receiving yards, 17 TDs, 9 INTs.. crazy stat-filled season!
  • Sack leader, Raff Morelli ended the season with 21 sacks. Only Noah Groper can potentially get to the 20 sack mark if he gets 4 against Jordan Rossie (Les Centaures). 5 sacks and he ties Morelli. 6 or more and Groper takes the sack crown… yeah, there’s probably a better way to say that, but I’ll stick with sack crown.

Key Week 11 Matchups :

Mangoose vs. Sheeeesh – Mangoose playing their season against Sheeeesh, but with Sheeeesh getting some injured players back in their roster, can Nic Schaefer lead his team into the playoffs??

Top Sauce vs. Silent Ticklers – Both teams have clinched a spot and are now jostling for positioning to avoid playing a higher seed.

Les Centaures vs. SHIT – Like Mangoose, Les Centaures are playing for their playoff hopes, but it definitely won’t be easy against a hot SHIT team.

Week 10 Game Recaps

Blessed 40 – 29 The Infantry

Peeze nailed the path to victory for Blessed against The Infantry. Just play Stephen Harripersaud‘s “drive the field” offense to perfection by scoring on (almost) every drive. The game however, started very tightly contested (as expected).

The Infantry scored on their first possession and scored their extra point to go up 7-0 early. Answered by a score of their own, including a key 15 yard run by Harripersaud, the tone was set for this game by Blessed’s decision to go for 2 points: They wanted to go for the lead early and whenever they could. They were rewarded with the aggressive call with the 8-7 lead. After exchanging TD scores once again on the next 2 possessions, The Infantry missed their 1 point conversion, while Blessed converted on again, their aggressive 2 point conversion call. Score recap: 16-13. The Infantry responded with their quick-strike offense in 3 plays to go up 19-16 and were essentially forced to go for 2, and converted it, as Mike Collard gained 30 yards on 2 receptions, 1 TD and the 2-pt convert for the key Infantry weapon on the drive. Score: 21-16 for The Infantry.

As I mentioned to start this game recap, as long as Blessed’s well-oiled machine on offense could drive the field and score, they had nothing to worry about. That’s why the bad snap that led to a safety was a HUGE play (at the time) in this game. This now put The Infantry up by 7 AND gave them the ball back to try and go ahead by 2 scores. But this is where Marvin Steinberg stepped in and began his dominance defensively. There were 5 plays left in the 1st half following the safety, and Steinberg made a crucial play, picking off Corey and stopping both The Infantry’s momentum and their final drive of the half, after Walwaski had hit Sean Semerjian for a 14 yard gain.

That well-oiled machine went back to work to begin the 2nd half and executed their game-plan, driving the field for a TD to the reliable Dave Gutkovski to get the score closer, at this point, down 22-23. I love the consistent “I’m came here to win” attitude displayed with the converts, as they again went for 2. This time however, they failed the convert to remain down a single point.

As Moe Khan reported on Calling The Audible, Corey wasn’t pleased with his interceptions, but luckily this was but a Finals preview, as on the next drive, Marvin halted The Infantry offense for a 2nd time, with his 2nd INT in 2 drives. Not only that, but he scored the next TD on the 5th play of the drive AND followed it up with… a 3rd straight pick on Corey. This is really where the game was out of reach, as Blessed followed their 3 straight defensive turnovers with a 10-play drive that chewed up a chunk of time off the clock and ended with a Kevin Smuda exclamation mark TD to end the season as the #1 seed. And speaking of ending the season on a high-note, please, if you haven’t done so, go check the QB stats this year in Div C, and you will see something I haven’t seen in the “lower than Div 1/2, A/B divisions”… Stephen Harripersaud ended the season with 55 TDs and 5 picks… an 11:1 TD-tp INT ratio… It would be wrong for me to not have mentioned this. As Terry Babalis said when chatting with him, and I agreed: “He put up crazy, Madden-like numbers this season”. Congrats on a hell of a season Steve!

Players of the Game

Blessed Player of the Game: Marvin Steinberg: 7 receptions on 8 targets, 106 receiving yards, 3 TDs, 5 tackles, 3 INTs, 1 PD.

The Infantry Player of the Game: Mike Collard: 7 receptions on 8 targets, 90 receiving yards, 2 TDs, 1x 2pt convert

FINAL Power Rankings – Top 8

  1. Blessed (9-1) (This week: #1, Previous week: #2): And Blessed claim what was theirs for many of the early weeks of the season. The #1 Power Ranking spot to close the season, and all the expectations of a division championship! I said it once, I’ll say it again. This is the team with the most depth in the division.
  2. The Infantry (9-1): (This week: #2, Previous week: #1): An incredible season that ended in with their only loss. No worry though, this team’s +202 point differential is no fluke.
  3. South Harmon Institute of Technology (7-3) (This week: #3, Previous week: #3): Wow, 3 receivers with 500+ yards and 2 receivers with 15+ TDs! What a 3-headed monster at the receiver position in Adam Rockman, Mat Lepage and Noah Groper. Look for this team to make it to the Semi-Finals, but can they beat the team that is expected to meet them there in The Infantry after losing to them on August 23rd?
  4. BBALLERS (7-3) (This week: #4, Previous week: #4): I still think this team will look to score their way out of problems. The question for them will be whether they can stop the other top offenses.
  5. Sheeeesh (6-4) (This week: #5, Previous week: #6): The team is going into the playoffs with a nice little 2 game winning streak and will look to ride that momentum through 4 rounds and into the final. They have the pieces to do it
  6. Les Gros Coqs (6-3-1) (This week: #5, Previous week: #5): Despite not facing Gianni Casati when playing the BBALLERS in Week 10, they showed what a team with chemistry can do when your not ready to play. If Sheeeesh’s 2-game win streak is a nice way to go into the playoffs, what’s to say about a 5-game winning streak? LGC are a team not many want to play in the 1st round of the playoffs, especially when you have to contain a guy like Dom Lefort.
  7. Silent Ticklers (5-5) (This week: #7, Previous week: NA): Jordan Panetta put this team on his back after they started the season 0-3 and will look to do the same in the playoffs. Panetta ended the season in 3rd in passing yards, touchdowns and 6th in completions in only 8 games played, with Adam Rosen finishing in 3rd for receiving TDs with 16.
  8. Blue Dreamers: (4-5) (This week: #7, Previous week: #7): Blue Dreamers are another team spiraling their way into the playoffs. They started the season strong, beating on the weaker teams and have struggled in the tougher section of their schedule, going 1-4 in their last 5.
  9. EZW (3-7) (This week: #8, Previous week: NA): EZW haven’t been in the Power Rankings for a few weeks now, but out of Top Sauce, Blue Dreamers and EZW, I will venture that EZW has the most “upset potential” and go on a playoff run. Jeremy White is sneaky good and slippery in the backfield. Mix that with the athleticism of the All-Hooks franchise members, and you’ve got a recipe for an upset special.
