Week 1 is in the books! 5V5 REC thoughts

We are back! For the first time in FlagPlus Football history, the Fall season is going to be played as a complete season, just like the Winter and Spring seasons. In addition, a second level of 5v5 is being introduced (Recreational). Tune in every week for game breakdowns, reviews of some of the best performances and power rankings.

Week 1 Thoughts:

Blue Ballers:

In my opinion, this is the fastest team this division has to offer. Good luck trying to match up with guys like Jimmy Marneris and Joey Notaro: their ability to create separation from defenders makes this team incredibly hard to cover. And their play caller? It’s only AJ Gomes, the fastest quarterback in the division and one of the best players in FPF, period. The only thing more impressive than this team’s offence might be their defence: Nicholas Gomes-Risso and Bekim Borova add a strong physical presence to this squad, which allowed just one touchdown in their first game.

Bleue Dry 7.1:

This team faced a  tough Week 1 matchup as they  faced off against Blue Ballers. Quarterback Frederic Juneau struggled against this suffocating defence. They were able to find some success and drive the ball, however they could not punch it in when it mattered most. I have seen Juneau tear it up before so I have no doubt this team will figure it out going forward.

Five Guys:

Having one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the division in Jared Buck is going to prove very valuable to this team. Already on display in Week 1 was Buck’s ability to make the big throw when it mattered most. Having a very competitive game against Dragon Magique, Buck’s experience was on full display, especially his decision-making on when to throw the ball away or to take a deep shot proved to be the true difference-maker in the outcome of this game. Another player who really stood out to me was Stephen Osman. Mostly known for his high level defence, Osman was able to produce effectively on offence, creating separation and coming down with big catch after big catch. Watch out for Five Guys.

Dragon Magique:

One of the younger teams in the division, Dragon Magique will need to use their youth and speed to their advantage this season. Charles Beauchemin is electric on the field,so look for him to have a big year on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Guilaume Boulanger looks to have a very diverse playbook, often spreading the ball to athletes like Teddy Perrier in the backfield who would then run it, throw it or pass it back to Boulanger. I think Dragon Magique will have the most growth throughout the season and make some noise come playoff time.

Trailer Park Boys:

The number one defence after week one allowing only 6 points! This defence was able to cause 2 interceptions and allow only 50 passing yards. Trailer Park Boys defence caught as many balls from Drawing Dead as they did, allowing only two receptions the entire game! Quarterback Antoine Meunier played nearly perfectly as well, completing 8 of his 12 passing attempts for 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Watch out – this team is definitely looking like one of the top in the division.

Drawing Dead:

Drawing Dead had a very tough Week 1 game as they could not get anything going against Trailer Park Boys. It’s possible they had an off night but, word to the wise: if they want to compete going forward, they will need to address what isn’t working as soon as possible. It’s only Week 1 so no need to panic yet – I’m sure they will find what works and put things together throughout the season.

Ambush:

Ambush has yet to play their Week 1 game.
