Top Sauce Too Hot for Wolves; Laval Too Fine Despite Numerous Cups

Division 3 – Week 2 recap
By Joseph Czikk
On a night when Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers led a spectacular winning drive against Dallas, a game of equal or greater importance was ticking down at the Stinger Dome in Montreal West.
Two 1-0 teams came into Sunday night’s game in Laval’s finest and 8 Boys 1 Cup.
Laval’s Finest built a 13-0 lead at halftime, but it wouldn’t last. 8 Boys 1 Cup QB Jesse Dupuis first threw a strike to nine-feet-tall man-child Mathieu Houle. The ‘Boys then picked off Laval’s Finest QB Phil Cutler on their next possession. Dupuis quickly found Marc-André Lapointe for both the TD and the one-pointer. 14-13 ‘Boys.
But with minutes left on the clock, Cutler and his offense drove down the field. Cutler scrambled for his life in the red zone and chucked a ball high into the back of the endzone. Jordan McLaren jumped like a man possessed and snatched pigskin.
Game over: 19-14, Laval’s Finest (1-1) over 8 Boys 1 Cup (1-1).
“I just went up and got it. That’s all I do, bro. You gotta stay hungry,” said McLaren on the play. He finished the night with five catches for 49 yards, 2 TDs and a pick.
“We got a couple key stops, tried to kill the momentum and we just tried to rally. We’re a new team and right now we’re trying to come together. It’s a chemistry question but we’re getting there,” added McLaren, who was initially too nervous to give me a quote.
Across the way on field 1, Top Sauce (2-0) took out Wolfpack (1-1) 28-18. Wolfpack led 18-14 at halftime after some nice work from QB Pascal Murray and receiver Corey Greenaway.
It wouldn’t last. In the second half Top Sauce grabbed a 22-18 lead after QB Vince Nardone pitched the ball to his brother Carl Nadone. Justin McLean got the successful two-point conversion.
Nardone would toss another score, this one to McLean (5 rec, 119 yards, 2 TDs) to up Sauce’s lead to 28-18. Wolfpack threatened with under two minutes to go, driving all the way to Top Sauce’s five yard line. But Sauce got three consecutive batted passes, including a key fourth down stop from Chris Millard.
Millard said his team went man coverage and agreed no one would take a gamble.
“I saw the slant, I jumped it and it was as simple as that. He’d been doing it all game,” said Millard on the final play. He chipped in with 4 catches, 53 yards, a TD and a sack.
“I feel like we started strong but it was just an okay game for us. But that’s what football’s about, it’s a game of turnovers and momentum. Defensive momentum was ours tonight,” he added.
Game notes
While I endeavor to watch as many games as possible, I can’t be in more than one place at once. Blame physics. That said, worthy performances deserve mention and hot story lines deserve mention. As such, here are my game notes:
Eight teams remain perfect at 2-0, including Top Sauce. Lightweight, The Brotherhood, Broccasion, Coyotes, Dad Bod Squad, F.O.E and Two and a Half Dans are the other seven.
The Brotherhood (2-0) got a monster game from Theo Ojeaha (192 yards, 7 TD). The QB granted touchdowns to Jamal Gittens (3), Kevin Kaya (3) and Khalil Kerr (1). They beat Prestige World Wide (0-2) 46-25.
6+R (1-1) manhandled Les Buddays (0-2) 42-12 as QB Frédéric Viens threw just three incompletions on 18 passes and 6 TDs. He threw half his scores to Justin Blanchard (5 rec, 92 yards, 3 TD).
Joey Taylor tossed for a large 230 yards and six TDs, leading Two and a Half Dans (2-0) to a 38-20 win over Red Raiders (1-1). Adam Bailey grabbed seven balls for 90 yards, a pair of TDs and an interception. Danny McFee had two scores and Matthew Rupcic registered a TD reception and a pick.
Coyotes (2-0) took out B.D Bandits (0-2) when QB Sammy Felder tossed five touchdowns and no picks, all to Josh Feder (10 rec, 73 yards, 5 TD).
Bearskins (1-1) got an uplifting, six-point win over Show Me Your TDs (1-1) in a 32-24 game. Bearskins QB Neil Etinson tossed five scores to Connor O’Brien (2), Marco Bertoldi (2) and Sasha Papich (1).
James Floreani put up a statement for Darksiders (1-1) as they took out Jonesers (0-2) 46-32. Floreani hauled in four TD passes on six catches for 140 yards. On the other side, all four of Dave Chitayat’s catches went for touchdowns in the losing effort.
Lighweight (2-0) destroyed the Heismans (0-2), 37-6. QB Simon Dagenais threw for five scores, going 15 for 21.
Week two power rankings
Each week, I will rank all the teams. The most worthy of such will have earned a write up. This week, 11 teams were worthy.
- The Brotherhood (2-0): It’s lonely at the top. All this shrimp, nobody to share it with. Theo Ojeaha leads the league with seven passing TDs, five of which went to Kevin Kaya (141 yards).
- Lightweight (2-0): They’ve only had 26 points scored on them, third best in the league, while pouring on 77 points. Lightweight beat both opponents by at least 20 points. QB Simon Dagenais, somehow, leads the league in completion percentage at 71.4%.
- Topsauce (2-0): It was a tough call not putting Topsauce at second spot. Wolfpack was no joke on Sunday night, and Nardone led a well-rounded team to the dubya.
- Two and a Half Dans (2-0): They were already winning 25-6 by halftime this week. Joey Taylor tossed a half-dozen TDs.
- F.O.E (2-0): These guys seems to have a solid defense, with Jeremy Anderson racking up eight tackles and Anthony Brisebois swatting three passes away. Their QB Alex Holowach completes two out of every three passes he attempts.
- Coyotes (2-0): The Coyotes have some sky-high stats after two games, and QB Sammy Feder has weapons. Josh Feder already has 13 receptions and seven scores. Kevin Smuda and Adam Rockman are two very solid receivers.
- Broccasion (2-0): Marco Masciotra seems to be the beating heart of this squad, with 104 receiving yards and a pair of TDs in the lone game he played.
- Dad Bod Squad (2-0): QB Sean Avraam has thrown eight touchdowns and two picks. They can score (52 points) but defensively they’ve allowed 45 points scored against.
- 6+R (1-1): They’re the only team with a loss with way more points scored than against, which should indicate that their record isn’t too indicative of capability. QB Frédéric Viens is completing two-thirds of his passes for 11 TDs and just 2 INT.
- Gros Chefs Bandits (1-1): Over two games, the Gros Chefs Bandits have allowed just 25 points against. They lost by one point to Mongoose this past week. I’d expect these guys to bounce back.
- Show Me Your TDs (1-1): They’re averaging 25 points per game, but defensively they’ve been hurt by a 32-point performance by Bearskins. In that game, SMYT lost by just six points. Anthony Addona has 10 catches, five of which went to the house.
