Peeze’s Playbook

Week 4

The greatest jugglers have always been the most influential FPF team captains. Managing egos, checking schedules, ensuring you have enough players have always been a challenge. This is especially true of the spring season. Teams are built with great care. Captains ensure that not only do they bring in the best weapons but also, those that fit well within their system and those that will work well with other players. These days, the cap has made the impact of a great captain even more apparent.

The summer season is such that as teams deal with typical injuries and missing players, they will also need to deal with vacation plans, weddings, hangovers and other social engagements. It is ever impressive to see that some teams manage to get their teams out week after week. Captain’s I salute you!

Bullies See TDs in Their Backyard

Back Yard Bullies, have, for the most part, lived up to expectations this season. Their defense has been strong and their offense has been methodical and efficient. Nothing has been more exemplary of that as Bryan Mongeau cut across the field and intercepted a Mike Addona pass as Backyard Bullies used that momentum to seize control of the game. When Rich Humes got the ball he moved down the field with surgical precision. He connected with 4 receivers for 4 our more catches. While that seems unnecessarily mathematical it does stand to serve to indicate how well the Backyard Bullies distributed the ball.

Show Me Your TDs have continued to struggle. Eric Cantin has taken control of the defense and he has managed to keep games close. However, despite touchdown catches by Alex David, Alexander Bergamin and a devilishly handsome snapper, Show Me Your TDs lost yet another game, this one, by a score of 26-19. A late goal line interception by Anthony Addona gave Show Me Your TDs a final chance. After a couple of heaves to the endzone yielded no results, SMYTDs moved on to a 1-3 record while Backyard Bullies improved to 3-1.

On Devil’s Wings

On Calling The Audible I have been critical of Diablos’ quarterback, Francois Martin. This game was a shining of example as to why I have been so critical. His 4 touchdowns was only eclipsed by his terrible passing line that accompanied it. Martin went 9/21 and if it was not for the intelligent team defense that controlled the pace of the game, Diablos would not have gotten away with a win in this game. Diablos have some very difficult games ahead. As such a 26-18 win may prove to be an important win in a season that has not started the way they expected it to.

Les Aigles have fallen to a record of 0-4. However, this game may have proven to be their best game to date. Much like, his counterpart on the other side of the field, Les Aigles’ quarterback Nicolas Schaefer struggled mightily as well. His very decent passing line does not reflect the inaccuracies and the poor decisions that he made in this game. However, the great plays by Jean-Christophe Ferland and many other receivers helped keep the game close and they even managed to outscore the Diablos in the second half. Les Aigles have some winnable games in the next few weeks. Mark my word, Les Aigles will win at least 1 of their next 3 games.

Let’s Get Nuts

D’s Nuts took on Pardon My Swag this past week. From the observer’s perspective, it would seem that D’s nuts were frustrated by PMS’ slow and methodical approach to offense. The first half of the game saw Pardon My Swag take a 7-6 lead into the half. Brad Evans did his best to march this team down the field however, it would appear that, unless he opens up his playbook PMS will struggle. Patrick Pilotte was the standout in this game as he scored 2 touchdowns and recorded an interception. Pilotte is an amazing athlete and has a knack for making big plays. This team needs to focus on him if they expect future success.

D’s Nuts did not have a remarkable outing as well. David Daoust struggled on 3rd and 4th down. David Daoust did however show that his chemistry with his brother and snapper Devin Daoust as Devin caught 7 passes for 74 yards and 3 touchdowns. His 4 sacks on the defensive side of the ball served to eclipse this impressive feat. D’s nuts went on to own the second half and win this game by a score of 26-13. The game was not played to D’s Nuts strength. Nonetheless, they improve their record to 3-1.

Power Rankings

There are a few very good teams that did not make this list. However, it may be quite understandable considering that so many teams are above the ,500 mark. Nonetheless, I’m sure you have complaints, as such; please feel free to voice them on Twitter @PeezeFPF.

  1. Warhawks (4-0)-The Warhawks have not allowed more than 6 points in either of their last two games. They have a game against the bottom dwelling Blue Devlis in week 5. I hope that this will be at least somewhat competitive.
  2. D’s Nuts (3-1)- They are winning games with quarterback David Daoust playing well under his potential. If he can play as well as we know he can D’s Nuts may in fact be Division D’s nuts.

  1. Les Affreux(3-1)- Les Affreux did not look incredible in their game of the week win. However, other than a stumble in the first week of the season, they have kept winning week after week.

  1. BronxBombers (3-1)- This core seems to never get the credit they deserve but, Alex Holowach, James Nowakowski, and Thomas Zorko have built a tough gritty team that no one wants to face. I have a feeling that this squad may be climbing the power rankings sooner than others would have thought.

  1. Formerly Formerly Formerly Teamless (3-1)- In spite of all the stars on this team, Alex Lamarche may be the player that teams need to start to key in on. He had 2 touchdowns and an interception this week.

  1. 5 Star Prospects (3-1)-A win against Tomahawk Nightmare is impressive. However, I still need to see a little more from this team before I can start to seriously consider them as a contender.

  1. Jagerbomb (3-1)- They face Bronxbomers this week. If Simon Duschesne and co. can win that one it may prove to be a statement win.

  1. Gotham Knights (3-1)- GK finally played against a team with a winning record and failed. This has them sliding down this ladder like an extremely watery slip and slide. Those proportions are tricky, you need to make sure when you hit the bum you don’t do more than take a dive.

  1. Tyrants (3-1)- For those of you who haven’t listened to “Calling the Audible” you have yet to hear me gush over Phil De Kovachich. He has been a huge addition to a very competent and experienced team.

  1. Hot Boys Hotline (3-1)- The +11 in the +/- column after 4 weeks is not entirely impressive. However, they keep piling up the wins and it is worthy of notice.

Other Teams Receiving Votes

I asked a panel of world-renowned physicists for their votes. There answer was oddly unanimous and inappropriately sexual. So, as usual, here are the other teams receiving votes. Also, once again, I was the only one casting votes.

  • Backyard Bullies (3-1)- They have only scored 5 touchdowns once this season. I will need to see a little more from this offense to have this team crack the power rankings.

  • Tomahawk Nightmare (2-2)-What we know that we will get out of Tomahawk Nightmare are complaints. Rather than insisting that having done the same thing over and over shouldn’t be cause for rusher interference, perhaps you should alter the action that is causing one to get penalized. If they can focus long enough to keep their head in the game they will be one of the top teams in the division.

  • Pardon My Swag (2-2)- Week 5’s game against the Tyrants will go a long way toward defining this season.

  • Woofpack (2-2)- Of all the names that get press on this team, the one that is oft ignored is Frederico Alzamora. I think this team will have a few hurdles to cross this season but Alzamora may be the key to their survival.

  • Globo Gym Purple Cobras (2-2)- Their game against the Warhawks had promised to be spectacular. Instead, it was a giant dud. Their offense has been week this season. If they can core more points they will find them selves once again in the Division’s power rankings.

  • The Alpha T’s (2-2)- The Alpha T’s are a somewhat new team that has found a decent amount of success through 4 weeks. However, they and themselves in the toughest division. If they expect to be in the running they will need to take a stand agains the best of the best within their subdivision.

Hung-over Visions of the World of Tomorrow

Well Mathieu Domon did just inch me out in last week’s picks. Instead of pulling away I seem to be engaged in a much tougher battle than I expected. However, with a rather different set of picks this week, I believe this may be the week that I begin to distance myself. Feel free to kiss Mat Domon goodbye by tweeting him @MathieuDomonFPF.

Sunday’s Surgical Sombrero

For those who are familiar with my article, you know that next week brings my mid season breakdown. For those new to my column, know that next week I will be breaking down each team, ranking you all from worst to best, keying in on some of the best additions, and key players and midseason grades. If you do not yet feel judged, you will.

For further analysis, tune in to the official FPF division D podcast Calling the Audible where GM Kolethras and I will discuss whether or not the greatest thing for the troops to fight for is in fact fried chicken, which gin joints we would be likely to walk into, and the most inappropriate materials for the construction of waterslides.  If you watch for long enough we may discuss some flag football relevant topics!

You can watch us live Thursday nights at 8:30 at www.youtube.com/flagplus or download the show via iTunes or at http://fpf.podomatic.com.   You can always tweet the show live by tweeting @EagleFPF or feel free to tweet GM @GMKole44 and let him know your vacation plans.

Have a great and safe week of action. See you at the fields!
