The Truth: Report cards and Power Rankings

Finally the bye week comes to an end and we can once again step back on the turf. For most of you, being on a football field probably feels something like coming home; I know it does for me. Luckily for division two players, they were able to quench their football thirst. Although I’m sure no one from division one is complaining, the bye allows everyone to be home to watch the Super bowl. Can you imagine having a game on Super bowl Sunday? I have a lot to cover this week so lets dive right into it. Report cards for division one and power rankings for division two will be added to this weeks’ article since division one has no games to be covered. Next week I will be doing Division two report cards.

Quick thoughts

– I’ve never seen so many 3-2 teams after two weeks.

– With a new work schedule, don’t look for my article to come out before Saturdays around noon.

– Looking forward to seeing the effect of a two-week lay off. I’m thinking some teams probably used this opportunity to hold a practice or two. Hopefully we will see this translate into cohesive play.

– I hate that people think the Super bowl was a bad game. Being a defensive guy I’m of the opposite opinion.

– All of you division two guys looking for you report cards, your turn will be next week.

– I don’t know what the Wolverines did in the off-season but it’s paying off huge dividends. Tony Tabet is off to one of his best seasons ever.

– Damps 25/8 has to most PA and the least PF in division two; that’s rough.

– Bobby Mickelberg makes the Legend a much harder team to play against.

– My thinking behind your team’s global grade: how you’re doing versus my expectations of you. As for your offensive and defensive grade, I’m considering stats, and whom you got those stats against.

– Congratulations to the guys who are now members of the Hall Of Fame. Although the voting process seems bias to me, I believe the majority of the guys who got in deserved it. If anything, I think some of the guys who are already in shouldn’t be. It feels like it has become a popularity contest more then a representation of your play on the field.

Report Card:

 D-Boys 1st 3-1:

8th place with 121 PF- Offense: D

Tied for third with 127 PA- Defense: B+

Global grade: B+

Overall: B-

I think the stats are a product of their inconsistent roster due to numerous injuries. When their full squad is there they are the best team in division A.

CBL 2nd 2-0-2:

2nd place with 150 PF- Offense: A

Tied for third with 127 PA- Defense: B+

Global Grade: A-

Overall: B+

Pleasantly surprised by this group. I think any team led by Carmin Pollice has a chance.

Got-Skills 3rd 2-1-1:

7th place with 122 PF- Offense: c-

2nd Place with 122 PA- Defense: A

Global Grade: B+

Overall: B+

Another nice surprise…The cliché says it best: defense wins championship. For now it’s winning games.

Loonatics 4th 2-2:

Tied for 5th with 133 PF- Offense: C

1st place with 118 PA- Defense: A+

Global Grade: B+

Overall: B-

They are now getting comfortable and playing well against strong opposition. Paul Lapierre is the key on this team. Can he continue his dominant play?

DK 5th 2-2:

Tied for 5th place with 133 PF- Offense: C-

5th place with 136 PA- Defense: C+

Global Grade: C+

Overall: C+

This group has been disappointing and inconsistent. These guys should be finding more success on both sides of the ball. I think they will turn this around.

Montreal’s Finest 6th 2-2:

1st place with 167 PF- Offense: A+

7th place with 149 PA- Defense: D

Global Grade: C-

Overall: C

Below average defensive play have pushed them down the ladder. I think they lost a step on defense and teams are taking advantage.

Rainmakers 7th 1-2-1:

3rd place with 141 PF- Offense: B+

6th place with 142 PA- Defense: C-

Global Grade: C-

Overall: C-

Unable to tie together both sides of the ball in one game seems to be the issue. They have been around the block too many times for me to think anything will change.

Flag Moi L’Sac 8th 0-4:

4th place with 135 PF- Offense: C

8th place with 181 PA- Defense: D-

Global Grade: D

Overall: D

They are going nowhere fast, averaging a +/- of negative 12 points per game. I never thought Flag Moi L’sac would find themselves in shambles at this point of the year.

Re-cap:

O.N.S. 25 – Served With Ice 32

Once again O.N.S. falls victim to their lack of defense. Not only have they consistently proven to be unable to stop any opposing offense, now their offense is struggling as well. Miscommunications between Kevin Wyeth and his receivers cost him two turnovers this weekend. David Shopov and Karl Lavallee both picked off Wyeth, something most defensive backs that have played Wyeth have never been able to do. Jordan Penetta quickly realized ONS’s defense would not be able to contain the speed SWI has on offense. Pennatta connected twice on the deep ball, one of which ended up being cut throat. I’m not surprised to see SWI finding success with the talent and experience on this team.

Monstars 51 – Gladiateurs 35

My game of the week ended up being quite a show. In most movies and television shows we’ve all watched, the gladiator who is usually the good guy, almost always survives and ends up the hero. Well, if this movie was Gladiateurs against Monstars in an arena, the movie would have been called “Roman Doom”. Frank Lebeau looked beside himself. His inability to connect with his receivers emerged a lot of frustration on his squad. Alex Nadeau Piuze was one of the few to never give up. Late in the game, Piuze made an incredible circus catch in the back of the end zone while finishing the game with 103 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jad Aridi had a field day against the Glads. Not only did he pick off Frank Twice, he also caught 11 balls for 103 yards and a touchdown. Before going down with an injury, Ryan Aridi was collecting heads on the battlefield. 3 touchdowns on 6 receptions is pretty impressive. While the Monstars still find themselves in 7th place in Conference B, look for them to continue fighting for a playoff position.

Terror Squad 19 – #NR 20

I almost fell asleep watching this game. A slow tempo with a lot of short plays makes for a seriously boring game. I guess it’s the kind of game #NR needed to play to beat TS. With a reduced James Floreani who didn’t look to be a hundred percent, their offense focused on quick completions. Usually, you would see James buying time in the pocket for long plays, but he didn’t look comfortable running on his recently injured ankle. Terror Squad had a chance on their last drive to win this game, but an ill-advised throw by Tam Villaydeth turned into an interception by Kandal Mayers. Jacob Bernett is the only receiver on my fantasy squad who got me some points this week. Jacob accounted for a hundred percent of the offense, tallying three touchdowns. After starting 3-0, TS now find themselves 3-2. Quite the unexpected turn around for one of the early favorites.

Wolverines 40 – Raiders 26

Raiders fell behind early in this game. Although their “never quit” attitude allowed them to stick around in this game, the Wolverines were just too much to handle. Tony Tabet continues to wave his magic wand. The quad formation they so often run seems to be giving everyone a lot of problems. I remember what I once used against this quads formation and he had no answer for it. Anyone ever heard of playing match? If you have, do it… let them run into each other and just wait, tag and ride. Most of you are probably wondering what the heck I’m talking about, too bad for you. Anyways, Wolverines now sit in first place and don’t look like they’ll be slowing down any time soon. Eric Kavaldjian is destroying the competition, he’s on pace for close to 900 yards receiving and 26 touchdowns. Tony Tabet is the leading quarterback in division two for QB RAT.

Wild Boys 53 – Damps 25/8 33

The boys in black definitely brought their wildness this week. To put up 53 points in one game is seriously impressive, especially for a team who had been averaging 26 points per game coming into this one. Damps just looked confused on defense. Unable to communicate proved to be their downfall. Over and over again, receivers found themselves alone in open space. Ryan Perry was one the beneficiary of this awful defense. He wrapped up the evening with 4 touchdowns and 110 yards! Mathieu Rene needs to continue down this path if Wild Boys wish to have any chance of making the playoffs. Rene threw for 307 yards and 8 touchdowns in this blow out.

Clockwork 34 – CLR Forces 18

Fresh off his hall of fame induction, Marco Masciotra showed everyone why he was inducted. Marco led his team to an important win over their conference rival. This game was over within the first 5 series. Quick turnovers by Frederic Dupuis gave CLR no chance, not to mention one of their weakest defensive performances this year. I’m not referring to points on the board but to wide-open receivers in deep zones. Both teams now sit at 3-2 in a five-way tie in Conference B. I feel divisional games are going to be more important than ever this season.

Division 2 Power Rankings:

1st Wolverines 4-1: Pleasant surprise

2nd Clock Work 3-2: We haven’t seen the best of them yet

3rd Served With Ice: When they show up, they are hard to beat

4th Untouchables 3-2: Very strong group of guys

5th Legends 3-2: Winning the tough games

6th Terror Squad 3-2: Slowing down as of late

7th O.N.S. 3-2 : Find it hard to believe they’ll win without a defense

8th CLR Forces 3-2: They have not impressed me lately

9th #NR 3-2: another team I believe will find more success going forward

10th Chernobyl Circus 2-3: Quarterback play has to improve

Vinni’s Stud squad:

QB: Mathieu Rene (WBS) 23/29 for 307 yards and 8 TDs. I’m almost certain this is his best game ever! Rene just went off… Stud Status activated!

WR: Ryan Perry (WBS) 9 Receptions for 110 yards and 4 TDs. I don’t know how such a big dude can go cloak mode: Ryan would disappear, then reappear alone in the end zone with the ball in hand!

DB: Jad Aridi (MST) 1 Tackle, 2 INTs and a defensive TD. A high motor player who is always looking to make plays. Welcome to the league of studs!
