Reviews and Previews for Co-ed and Women’s Division

After much anticipation, co-ed is back from the bye week. The Women’s division is already at the halfway point of the season. I know it has been a long time since your last article so I will jump right into it.

In co-ed 1, Michael Scott’s Tots surprised me by beating Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce 42-31. Both of the quarterbacks in this one had fantastic games. Evan Ely Nolet led his Tots to victory with 12 completions for 220 yards and seven scores. Most impressively, he did all that without throwing a single interception. A large part of MST’s success was due to Doug McKernan. He can only be described as a super sub. He caught seven passes for 160 yards and five scores. What a game! While MST’s offence had an incredible performance, their defence struggled to stop Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. They only forced one punt out of their opposition. While they might have been able to win this one thanks to the prowess of their offence, this is not a formula that will work every week. They need to force a few interceptions if they hope to compete against the heavyweights in this division. Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce  also had a strong offensive showing. Quarterback Jean-Felix Marquis passed for 200 yards and five scores. Like his opposing number, he also avoided throwing any interceptions. On most nights, a five TD performance will be enough to win a game. Unfortunately, Marquis and SHCS just came across an even hotter quarterback. One thing that SHCS did well was spread the ball. The speedy Benjamin Dansereau-Leclerc led his team with six receptions for 73 yards and two scores. Alexandre Jubinville was hot on his heels with five catches for 68 yards and two scores. SHCS’s final touchdown came courtesy of Camille Ste-Marie who finished the game with 4 catches for 35 yards. All in all, this was a good game for Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. They moved the ball with ease. If they can build on that offensive showing and tighten things up on defence, they will start winning very soon.

After an up and down start to the season, Power Rangers won their first statement game this past weekend. They beat the undefeated Party Mix 39-32. The only reason the score was so close is that Party Mix scored twice late in the game once it was already clear that Power Ranger were going to win. Watching this game, it really felt like watching the Power Rangers of old. Their offence was driving down the field methodically. A key component of that offence was Genevieve Gaudet. She led the team with four receptions for 54 yards. As expected, Serge Pilon made his presence felt with his three catches for 42 yards. Two of those catches were for touchdowns. I think it was Power Rangers’ defence that impressed me the most. They held Party Mix to 13 points in the first half and picked off the experienced Francois Deslauriers twice. Pilon even returned one of those interceptions to the house. In typical Serge Pilon style, he broke a few tackles on his way to the endzone.

ATH Squad cemented their place atop the co-ed 2 standing with a dramatic 26-25 win over Kiss My End Zone. ATH Squad struggled early and they were down 13-0 to start the second half. During the half ATH Squad made some key modifications to their offence while KMEZ rested on their laurels. In the second half, KMEZ were unable to stop their opponents. ATH Squad had found the soft spots in KMEZ’s defence and exploited them to score 26 points in the second half. This game came right down to the wire. KMEZ scored with 5 plays left to take the lead. ATH Squad then had 4 plays to march down the field and score. When QB William Rodrigez was sacked on the second play of that drive, things were looking grim. However, on the last play of the game Rodriguez connected with Edouard Gagnon for the game winning score.

Team Texas beat Fleur de Lys 20-18 in a heavyweight showdown in the women’s division. The star of that victory for Team Texas was definitely Emma Racine. Racine caught 12 catches for a staggering 176 yards and three touchdowns. Most quarterbacks would be happy to pass for 176 yards. Racine put up those numbers as a receiver. Wow. While Racine stole the show on offence, Team Texas had a great collective defensive showing. They limited an uber talented Fleur de Lys team to three scores. The key to that robust defensive effort was sure tackling. Team Texas limited the yards after reception and that was key to their victory. The leader of that defence was Marilou Beland with eight tackles.

Week 4 Game of the Week:

Co-ed 2

Tigers (37) vs Js (41): I have been waiting for Hai Minh Luong to have his breakout game in co-ed. Well, it looks like he finally had that game. For those of you familiar with the numbered division of FPF, you know Minh Luong is an established and talented quarterback. His talent finally shone through in his team’s 41-37 win over the Tigers. He completed 15 passes for 167 yards and five scores and only turned the ball over once. His favourite target was definitely Adrien Dusautois. Dusautois caught five passes and accounted for more than half of his team’s receiving yards. He also caught two touchdown passes. If Minh Luong wasn’t looking towards Dusautois, he was probably looking to connect with Soryha Tum who finished with five catches for 62 yards and two scores. If the Js are to have continued offensive success, this is the formula they will need to follow. Minh Luong has good chemistry with these two receivers and this game proves they can win games by passing to them. On defence, it was Hai Minh Luong’s pick-six that turned the tide in the game. The Js had just scored a touchdown and on the first play of the next drive, Minh Luong picked off the Tigers and returned it to the house. The Tiger’s never really recovered from that.

The Tigers were so close to getting their first win in FPF in this game. They were able to consistently move the ball downfield. They scored six times. They lost this game because their opponents converted more extra points than they did. On the bright side, Cam Chaput has found a formula to success in FPF. That formula to success is very simple: pass to Kemar Vernon. The uber athletic receiver caught eight passes for 141 yards and five scores. That means Vernon accounted for over 70% of his teams receiving yards and for over 80% of their touchdowns. If the Tigers keep on playing like they did in this one, they are sure to win a game sooner rather than later. They seem to have figured out things offensively. If they could improve things on defense, this team could start winning quite a few games.

Week 4 Team of the Week:

Each week I will choose the top performers from co-ed to create the team of the week. There will always be two girls on offence and on defence. If you are on the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one.

Offence

Quarterback: Evan Ely Nolet (Michael Scott’s Tots) 12 completions, 220 passing yards, 7 TDs, 0 INTs

Receiver: Kemar Vernon (Tigers) 8 receptions, 141 receiving yards, 5 TDs

Receiver: Emma Racine (Party Mix) 7 receptions, 71 receiving yards, 3 TDs

Receiver: Alexandre Blais (Kiss My End Zone) 9 receptions, 83 receiving yards, 1 TD

Receiver: Doug Mckernan (Michael Scott’s Tots) 7 receptions, 160 receiving yards, 5 TDs

Receiver: Daphne Maurais (It’s a Match) 5 receptions, 61 yards, 1 TD

Defence

Rusher: Bermham Sylvain (A-Town) 2 tackles, 4 sacks

Defensive Back: Wade Jr. Shallcross (Power Rangers) 4 tackles, 3 PDs

Defensive Back: Constance Millaire (Dream Crushers) 1 INT, 1 Defensive TD

Defensive Back: Zachary Brassard (3rd Down for What) 5 tackles, 2 INTs

Defensive Back: Valentin Lamoulie (Rhinos) 6 tackles, 2 INTs, 2 Defensive TDs

Defensive Back: Brittney McManus (3rd Down for What) 1 INT

Week 5 Predictions:

Co-ed 1

Midtown (4-1) vs Michael Scott’s Tots (2-3): While Michael Scott’s Tots are making progress, especially on the offensive side of the ball, they do not have the athletes to slow Midtown down.

Prediction:  Midtown

Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce (1-4) vs Speed Academy (2-2-1): Speed Academy have impressed me. Their quarterback, Emile Plante leads the division in passing yards and I think he will lead his Speed Academy over Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce.

Prediction: Speed Academy

Power Rangers (3-2) vs 3rd Down for What (4-1): This is going to be a fantastic game. 3rd Down for What are off to a 4-1 start and currently sit in first place. On the other hand, Power Rangers are flush with confidence after beating Party Mix. I think they will ride that confidence to another victory.

Prediction: Power Rangers

Party Mix (3-1-1) vs 3 Hunnas (0-5): 3 Hunnas have had a brutal start to the season. Things will not be getting any easier this week.

Prediction: Party Mix

Co-ed 2

A-Town (1-4) vs ATH Squad (5-0): ATH Squad won a dramatic game over Kiss My End Zone. They will ride that high to yet another win.

Prediction: ATH Squad

Tigers (0-5) vs La Secte (1-4): Is this the week Tigers finally get their first win? I think it is. Cam Chaput had a strong game last week and if his defence can give him a stop or two, they should be able to win.

Prediction: Tigers

Dream Crushers (4-1) vs Kiss My End Zone (4-1): This should be another interesting game. Kiss My End Zone are staggering after their first loss, but I think they will rebound in this one.

Prediction: Kiss My End Zone

Ying & Yang (4-1) vs Rhinos (2-3): Yin & Yang have been the best team in the league since their week 1 loss.  The Rhinos do not have the athletes to slow down Y&Y’s high octane offence.

Prediction: Ying & Yang

It’s a Match (2-3) vs Js (2-3): After winning their first two games, It’s a Match dropped three straight. I think this is the perfect game for them to rebound and get back to their winning ways

Prediction: It’s a Match

Women’s Division

Fleur de Lys (3-1) vs Ahuntsic Girls (2-2): Ahuntsic Girls won big in week 6. However, if they are to have any chance of winning this week they will need to kick things into an even higher gear. I don’t think they will be able to reach a high enough level to compete with this star-studded Fleur de Lys team.

Prediction: Fleur de Lys

The Rookies (0-4) vs Spartiates (1-3): This is not the start to the season that the The Rookies imagined. They haven’t scored a touchdown yet. While I don’t think they will win this one, I do think they will get their first score.

Prediction: Spartiates

District (3-1) vs Team Texas (3-1): This is definitely the game of the week in the Women’s Division. Last week, District struggled in the first half against Spartiates while Team Texas won a big game against Fleur de Lys. Texas will ride that win to another win this week.

Prediction: Team Texas
