Reviews and Previews as Coed enters its Third Week of Action
Week 2 of the Coed season is in the books. Here are some thoughts and musing after two weeks of action:
- The Coed 1 division is strong, really strong. Les Porcinets who were one of the best teams in the Winter season currently have an 0-3 record and are sitting at the very bottom of the Coed standings.
- EZFun do not seem to make life very easy on themselves. They lost in dramatic fashion in week 2 to Kiss My End Zone. After scoring with two plays left in the game EZFun thought they had the win all but secured. However, KMEZ marched down the field in just two plays and hit their 2 point convert attempt in order to steal the win out from under EZFun’s noses. EZFun already played their week 3 game and won this one by one point, another narrow margin. While this close games are exciting, I am sure EZFun would love to win by slightly more comfortable margins.
- Plenty of Fish and The IG Team look like they might be on a collision course for another finals meetup. Both teams have started the season with a perfect 2-0 record and are looking like the class of the division.
- The Rookies are looking like veterans. They are off to a 3-0 start and beat a very good Kiss My Christmas Balls team in week 2. They are doing a great job of protecting the ball and their defence is doing just enough to secure a few wins.
- LDN are looking like an impressive team. They are loaded with athletes and while they did fall to an experienced Fitsquad team they will only get better as the season goes on and they get more FPF experience under their belt.
- Things are going to start heating up in the Coed 2 playoff race. There are currently seven teams with just one loss so seeing which of those teams start trending upwards and which others struggle will be interesting as the next weeks roll around.
- La Secte have made their return to FPF and they are looking good. Yes, they did lost to 1-9ers in their opening week match but they just lost by 7 against one of the better teams in Coed 3.
- Block Party are off to an awesome 3-0 start but they are yet to face a major challenge. They have cruised past their first three opponents and already have scored 85 points more than they have conceded. It will be interesting to see how this team fairs when they face off against some of the division’s other heavy hitters.
- Chefs Bandits might just be one of the best teams in Coed 3. While this is not a team that most people know very much about, I have seen enough from this team to be thoroughly impressed. Despite forfeiting a game they have an impressive 2-1 record and are getting better game by game.
Week 2 Games of the Week
La Secte (18) vs 1-9ers (25) – Coed 3
La Secte have been playing in the Coed divisions for a number of years now so it is great to see them once again make. The biggest change that this team has made was at the quarterback positions, bringing in Nicolas Katerelos. While this is Katerelos’ first time playing in Coed he has a significant amount of FPF experience under center and it is already looking like he has upgraded this team’s offence. In his first game, going up against a very good 1-9ers defence, he managed to throw for three scores and only one interception. While he had a solid performance, there is definitely room for improvement. He did not reach the 100 yard passing mark in this one and a lot of his production came later in the game. A staple of this La Secte team ever since they joined the league has been getting big production out of Alyson Francillon and it looks like he is set for another big season. Francillon caught four passes in this one and led all receivers with 53 yards. La Secte even found a way to give themselves a chance to win this one late. After scoring with just two plays left they wisely decided to go for the onside kick, which Katerelos completed to Leblanc-Guindon. La Secte then had two plays left to score from midfield. While they came up empty handed this is still a promising game for this team. To be within a few points of beating one of the better teams in Coed 3 is an impressive way to start your season.
1-9ers managed to escape with yet another narrow win. I was impressed with their defence in this game. For starters, Jacob Benoit had a big night recording three sacks and holding their opponents to just nine yards rushing. He did a great job of limiting the time and space that La Secte’s Katerelos had to work with in the pocket and was a big reason why they were only able to pass for 89 yards. Outside of the performance of Benoit, Ophélie Richard stepped up in a huge way for this team. She recorded her team’s only interception, which really set the tone in this game. Just two plays after scoring she picked La Secte off and made sure that La Secte did not score before the half. The also recorded the bat down on the final play of the game to secure the win for her team.
While the 1-9ers defence was firing on all cylinders, their offence appeared to be a little unidimensional. Presser struggled to move the ball through the air and completed just 50% of his passes on his way to throwing for 94 yards and two scores. To his credit, he did a much better job of spreading the ball and got major production out of Isabela Lamosa who caught all four passes thrown her way for a total 31 yards. Presser made up for his lackluster showing as a passer with his abilities as a runner. He took off running seven times this game for a total of 68 yards and two scores. While it worked in this game, I am worried that this 1-9ers offence might be overly reliant on Presser’s legs and could be shut down by a talented rusher.
Kamikaze (32) vs Back That Pass Up (33) – Coed 2
Back That Pass Up (BTPU) won their first game of the season in a narrow 33-32 affair that came down to the wire. Jason Rossie, QB for BTPU, scored the go ahead touchdown to Justin Anania with just three plays left in the game, which left Kamikaze with just three plays to drive the field and win. Unfortunately they were not able to complete a single pass for BTPU were able to hold on and secure the win.
The big difference between this game and their first game of the season for BTPU was the play of Jason Rossie. After struggling in week 1, the FPF veteran looked like one of the better passers in the division in week 2. He threw for five scores and 175 and was even able to add 17 yards rushing in this one. His go-to receiver on the night was Chris Brockwell. If he was not looking Brockwell’s way then he was probably looking for Justin Anania. Those two receivers were targeted 18 times and together accounted for 14 of BTPU’s 18 receptions. While they are both very talented receivers, this team is going to need to do a better job of spreading the ball and getting production out of their female receivers if they want to contend with the heavy hitters in the division. Jasmine Rossie was the most targeted female player and she did finish the game with a team high two touchdown passes. She clearly has secure hands and knows how to find the end zone. BTPU could definitely benefit from getting her more involved in their passing game. Another concern with BTPU is their ability to slow down rushing quarterbacks. This Coed 2 division is filled with a ton of very mobile passes and this BTPU defence has not recorded a single sack this season. To make matters worse, Kamikaze’s Gabriel Lemonde averaged 15 yards per rush attempt in this one on his way to running for nearly 50 yards and a score. While Rossie might be able to score five touchdowns a game, this team will need to get more stops out of their defence if they hope to win more games.
As for Kamikaze, this was an impressive showing. They were in this game until the very end and were just one convert away from tying this game up or even winning it. The star of their offence is very clearly Alexis Ferrand. He caught six passes for nearly 70 yards and three scores in this one and has consistently been one of the best receivers in the division over the first few weeks of the season. The big question for this Kamikaze team is who else can step up behind Ferrand. While Jean-Sebastien St-Arneault did catch three passes for 50 yards in this one, there were also three passes thrown in his direction which were not caught. This drop issue did not seem to be an issue for St-Arneault. Mélisande Guertin only caught one of four passes thrown her way while Annabella Carbonneau caught one of three. While it is always fantastic to have an elite receiver like Ferrand on your roster, the great teams are the ones who can get production from their entire receiving group. If Kamikaze wants to go from good to great, they will need some other receivers to step up in a big way.
Week 2 Team of the Week
Every week, I will name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one and vice versa. In the spirit of the Coed division, every team of the week will have a minimum of three female players on the offensive and defensive team. This week I will only be creating one team of the week with players from across all three divisions.
Offence
Quarterback: Ignacio Valdes Manzanedo (Kiss My End Zone) 23 completions, 272 passing yards, 6 TDs, 1 INTs
Receiver: Samuel Omombo (Bandite) 5 receptions, 103 yards, 3 TDs
Receiver: Stella Jean Georges (LDN) 4 receptions, 101 yards, 1 TDs
Receiver: Audrey Lajoie (Kiss My End Zone) 5 receptions, 72 yards, 2 TDs
Receiver: Laurence Pontbriand (Plenty of Fish) 6 receptions, 94
Receiver: Jerome Hovington (Les Porcinets) 6 receptions, 105 yards, 3 TDs
Defence
Rusher: Jacob Benoit (1-9ers) 3 sacks
Defensive Back: Catherine Bergeron (Kamikaze) 3 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PD, 1 TD
Defensive Back: Ophélie Richard (1-9ers) 1 tackle, 1 INT, 1 PD
Defensive Back: Gabriel Lemonde (Kamikaze) 4 tackles, 2 INTs, 2 TDs
Defensive Back: Samora Fanta Sacko (Block Party) 4 tackles, 1 INT
Defensive Back: Jonothan Joseph (Michale Scott’s Tot) 1 tackle, 2 INTs, 1 TD
Week 2 Predictions:
The IG Team (2-0) vs Kiss My End Zone (1-1) – Coed 1
This is a classic coed rivalry match. These two teams have faced off against each other deep in the playoffs more times than I can count and it has consistently produced fantastic results. This time, they are going head to head in one of the most anticipated matchups of week 3. The big question for Kiss My End Zone is always who will be able to rush Jeanslee Alexis? Thankfully for KMEZ, they have a wide assortment of rushers available to them on this roster. Isaiah Allard is one of the best rushers in FPF, but he tends to excel more against pocket passers. KMEZ also have Joey Notaro on the who, despite being nearly a foot shorter than Allard, is shiftier and matches up better against the more nimble passers. The other question is how KMEZ will be able to lineup against the imposing Rohan Jones. He has been to a stellar start to his season with 133 receiving yards and three scores in just his first game. While Sanders Armand might be able to contain the athletic receiver, that leaves the rest of the KMEZ defence to contain the likes of Stella Jean Georges and Jordanson Alexis who are both impressive receivers in their own right. All in all, I do see a path to victory for KMEZ in this one but it all starts with Notaro winning the rusher matchup against Alexis and that is no easy feat. While there is a way that KMEZ wins this one, if I were a betting man I would have to put my money on The IG Team to escape with the narrow win.
Prediction: The IG Team
Cavaliers (1-1) vs Air Force (1-1) – Coed 2
After getting off to a rocky start to the season against Kiss My Chirstmas Balls, Cavaliers rebounded in a massive way by beating Bolas Profundas 47-6. Emerson Peterkin had a performance for the ages, with four interceptions. Three of those he returned to the house for six. As for Air Force (AF), they are fresh off the heels of a defeat to Kamikaze. A consistent issue for AF this season has been ball security. They have already thrown four interceptions in just two games and when you are going up against a ball hungry defence like the Cavaliers’ that is not a sign. If AF hope to escape this one with the win, they will need to significantly improve their ball security. Despite throwing four interceptions, they have produced five picks of their own. Ultimately, this game is going to come down to which team turns the ball over the least and my money is on The Cavaliers. I think Peterkin will single handedly pick off more passes than his team will throw and that will lead this group to victory.
Prediction: Cavaliers
Free Agent Squad (0-1) vs The Strawhats (0-3) – Coed
The first thing that this Free Agent Squad will need to improve is their play under center. In their first game of the season they completed 10 passes for 35 yards and threw interceptions. To FA Squad’s credit they were going up against a very good Ghosted defence who did not make life easy for the Free Agents. This Free Agent team is also bound to get better as they gain more experience and learn how to play with each other. In week one they threw 11 incomplete passes and a significant amount of those can be attributed to the quarterback Théo Médori and his receivers simply not being on the same page.
The Strawhats are also a team of newcomers to FPF and they have not had the smoothest starts to the season either. To their credit, they did face off against three of the very best teams in the division in their first three games. After conceding 70 points in the first they tightened things up defensively and just conceded 77 over the next two. They also scored their first touchdown of the season last week in their game against Chefs Bandits. The good news for this Strawhats team is that they have been able to produce turnovers on defence. Suany Gonzalez and Liza-Marie Gagnon have both already recorded an interception.
Ultimately this game will be a fantastic learning experience for both teams, but at this stage I think the Strawhats defence has a slight edge and that is why I think they will come out on top.
Prediction: The Strawhats
