Regular Season Is Officially Over… Playoffs Are Here!
The regular season has officially concluded, and the playoffs are upon us! In the Coed 1 division, the playoff structure will be relatively short this year, as only five teams are participating. This means 4/5 teams will be in the playoffs, with the games kicking off in early December. On the women’s side, with 9 teams in the division, only 8 will make it to the next round. Let’s break down the matchups and make some predictions.
Coed 1 Playoffs
With just five teams competing this fall, all but one will advance to the playoffs. The remaining teams will face off in the semi-finals on December 2nd at St-Laurent Field, with both games scheduled to be played there.
Kiss My End Zone vs Aigre-Doux
Both of these teams bring a variety of talent to the field, but Kiss My End Zone enters the playoffs with a slight edge. They have historically been successful against Aigre-Doux, and with Jimmy-Lee Janvier at the helm, they’ve developed an offensive system that works well, especially with his receivers’ speed and agility. Janvier knows how to exploit defenders’ weaknesses and will likely continue that trend in this matchup.
On the other side, Aigre-Doux will rely on Tam Vilaydeth’s scrambling ability to keep the defense guessing. Vilaydeth will need to make quicker decisions, as the rusher has the speed to get to him in a hurry. If Aigre-Doux can limit their mistakes and keep the pressure on Janvier, they could make this a closer game than expected.
Prediction: Kiss My End Zone
Fitsquad vs Balls Deep
These two teams have been neck-and-neck all season, finishing with identical 6-3-1 records and similar point differentials. Fitsquad has won all their regular season matchups against Balls Deep, but their last meeting ended in a dramatic tie. Did Balls Deep make adjustments in their strategy, or did Fitsquad simply have an off day? This rematch will likely be a tense and hard-fought contest.
During their last game, Benjamin Carli of Balls Deep was able to find seams in the defense and capitalize on opportunities, while Fitsquad’s quarterback, William Brouard, struggled with some overthrown deep passes, resulting in key interceptions or loss of downs. In the playoffs, every mistake is magnified, and both teams will need to bring their A-game on both offense and defense. I expect a defensive battle, with the team that can limit turnovers and capitalize on red-zone opportunities emerging victorious.
Prediction: Fitsquad
Women’s Division Playoffs
The women’s division playoffs are set to be an exciting series. With 8 teams advancing to the quarterfinals, all teams will be in action, and no one will get a bye. All the games will take place at St-Laurent Field on Monday, November 25th. The top seed will face the 8th seed, the 2nd seed will meet the 7th seed, and so on. It’s do or die for the teams that don’t come out on top, as four teams will be eliminated that day.
Subzero vs Wolfpack
Subzero enters this matchup as the favorite. They’ve been dominant throughout the season, with strong chemistry and consistent performances on both sides of the ball. Wolfpack, however, is a team that has shown potential in previous seasons and has a solid game plan. While they might be outmatched in terms of overall roster strength and experience, they are always a dangerous team in the playoffs against teams in the same caliber as them. It’s tough to bet against Subzero, but I can confidently say that Wolfpack can execute very well in their own division.
Prediction: Subzero wins
Vortex vs Ghosted
Vortex comes into this game with a clear edge, boasting a highly skilled and experienced quarterback. Their offensive system is efficient, and they have a defensive unit that consistently creates turnovers and disrupts opposing offenses. Vortex’s ability to read the field and adjust to different offensive schemes makes them a tough opponent.
Ghosted, however, has a well-rounded team with key players like Frédérique Daoust, who has added an extra layer of talent to their squad. With solid hands, good route running, and the ability to play a little physically, Ghosted has the tools to challenge Vortex. But to beat a team like Vortex, they’ll need to be flawless in all phases of the game—especially on defense.
Prediction: Vortex
BRUTES vs Les Crocs
Les Crocs, a newer team in the league, had a challenging start due to player availability issues, forcing them to shuffle their roster throughout the season. While they have talent across their squad, they’ve struggled to find consistency. However, with a more stable roster, they could be a real threat in future seasons.
The BRUTES, on the other hand, are a seasoned squad, and their experience showed as they finished the regular season with a respectable 7-3 record. They know how to play together and have the talent to make a deep playoff run. While they had some shaky moments during the season, they’ve shown they can step up when needed. This game will likely come down to execution, and if the BRUTES can play a clean game, they should advance.
Prediction: BRUTES
Red Nation vs Mercenaries
This matchup is set to be one of the closest of the quarterfinals. The Mercenaries may be a younger team, but they have proven themselves to be a formidable opponent, finishing the regular season with a solid 5-4-1 record. Their youth and energy have helped them compete with older, more experienced teams. In their regular season matchup, Red Nation narrowly edged out the Mercenaries with a 21-20 win in a thrilling contest.
Red Nation is a well-coached team with strong leadership and playoff experience, but Mercenaries’ growth and improvement throughout the season means they could pull off an upset. This game will be tight and could go either way, depending on who can execute under pressure and limit their mistakes.
Prediction: Red Nation
The playoffs are always unpredictable, and this season is no exception. With high stakes in every matchup, every team will be fighting hard for a chance to advance. Whether it’s the Coed 1 teams or the women’s division, expect to see some intense football action in the coming weeks. Best of luck to all teams, and may the best one win!
