Recaps, Making Fun of Flat Earthers and ReVengeance
Today’s the day! It’s a culmination of an entire season of blood and sweat! The FPF Roadshow has become a staple spectacle where we broadcast our finals and over two days we will crown 12 Champions. We will be sharing the link to stream live but if you are at all inclined we recommend coming out to the festivities. Have a beer with the media teams, celebrate the glory of a championship and feel the crushing weight of defeat.
Mike Pierrecin has the chance to be the first player to win 4 championships in a single season. Kiss My Inlaws stake their perfect season agains the upstart Dime & Bougie. At the absolute height of the sport Maude Lecasse leads her Brutes against an equally well oiled machine in Les Bleus. Myles Gibbon is expected to return from injury for his Co-Ed 1 final as his hamstring seems to have healed faster than Moe’s injury to his ego that has kept him from his return to play. Can Athena Ryan take the only female quarterbacked team to an upset victory over Half n Half? Kevin Wyeth has seemed unstoppable in his record setting division 2 season. Hell, I don’t know if Braves can stop him in Div 1 either. Antoine Chabot, Valery Shelder and Gabriel Barbeau look to keep a restricted area as Primal look to take on Tyler Bianchi and his high flying attack on Killer Rays. Silent Ticklers will attempt to censor that’s What She Said as Jordan Panetta has definitely rounded into expected form. Iggy’s incredible thought about division 6 remains: Can the Man Sized Baby Rays beat the beloved baby faced X-Men? Will Peeze just nod and say Boyz II Men? Emelie Papillon has been a force for Les Hiboux but do they have enough firepower to contain all the forces of Carababes? Benchwarmers have overcome the suspension of defensive leader Nicholas Gomes-Risso but standing in their way is Jeanne Gravel and the “more than a social media QB” in Jeanslee Alexis. The Zeppetelli’s have no interest in making friends as they keep that circle tight but can they get puff, puff, past No Friend Zone with Felix Boutet riding shotgun amongst some of his otherwise foes from his division 4 bout? Are some of the questions confusingly worded?
This is a pretty cheap journalistic technique. I’m asking rhetorical questions that no one can answer and the answers won’t matter because the seconds the game starts all that will matter is the play on the field. It does allow me to lead with some of the story lines and reasons you should come to the game. If you’re looking for hard hitting questions that will be answered during the finals, here they are:
-Was Kevin Durand casted opposite Nicholas Cage in Primal because they kinda look alike or were they trying to get Kevin Durant and he informed them he only plays for winners?
– When Kissiing Inlaws do you go one cheek, two cheeks, three cheeks or to a seedy motel?
-How much credit will Moe take for Maude Lacasse’s play?
-Where do Nothern Braves exist on flat earth? Is there still a North or do you just go up like when Super Mario get’s the feather?
-Urgence Medic…I got nothing, thank you for your service.
-If Vengeance comes back for another season will they be called Revengeance?
-Killer Rays vs. Primal’s Jaguar… on land or in the water? The gambling community needs to know.
-Does the IG Team track your data? If so is it an unfair advantage and can they predict plays. Or do they just annoyingly sell you stuff you don’t need. But honestly, that hair mask is doing wonders. Thanks targeted ads!
-Is the game to early for Hiboux? They are nocturnal. (Look I’m gonna be a dad… gotta sharpen my Dad jokes. It’ll be the only repreive for when I downscale my Jordans to New Balance).
Divisional Round And Quarter Finals
Alpha Dogs vs GHB
Score: Alpha Dawgs (19-18)
Division 3
by J ROSE
In a classic playoff battle where the defenses came to play, GHB outlasted the Alpha Dogs 19-19 to move one step closer to Div 3 glory. There were only 2 scores on 6 possessions in the first half, with 1 of the stops being a highlight reel interception by GHBs David Polynice. Going into the break, the game was tied 6-6.
Alpha Dogs started with the ball in the second half but were stopped again, leading to a GHB score to go up 12-6. The game then went back and forth, with the Alpha Dogs down 19-12 with little time left on the clock. With 2 plays left, Michael Roy found Dilan Daoust in the endzone to cut the lead to 19-18. AD decided to go for 2 for the win, but unfortunately for them, the XP was unsuccessful.
In the next round, GHB would pull the upset over Blue’ Clues to cement their way into the D3 semi finals.
The Stoics vs Les Gros Coqs
Score: The Stoics (38-26)
Division 3
by J ROSE
Another upset in D3 as The Stoics taken LGC 38-26, in a tightly contested battle. Chris Rivest, with 5 Tds and the all-important no INTs, led the way for the Stoics, who had big contributions from Carl Achy and Vincent Cheung. They combined for 9 catches for 108 yards and 3 TDs. For LGC, Dom Lefort threw 2 INTs in the loss, but certainly made an impact with his arm and legs.
The Stoics were missing their normal rusher Denzel Eadie-Lowe, so and with Leforts speed, this was going to be a pivotal story to the outcome of this game. Luckily, Vincent Cheung stepped up in his place, and did an outstanding job containing the LGC speedy QB.
After a failed onside kick by LGC in the second half, Chris Rivest took 3 plays to find Thomas Chausse in the endzone to put this game to bed.
The Stoics, in their next game, upset the favoured Mangoose 41-32. This 19 seed is proving to everyone that anything can happen come playoff time.
That’s What She Said vs Arouch
Score: TWSS (38-19)
Division 3
by J ROSE
This game started off shaky for both QBs as 2 of the first 3 plays were INTs, but both settled down with Leandre Ethier showing that he is a force to be reckon with in D3. He went 20 for 27 for 191 yards and 6 TDs as TWSS dismantled Arouch 38-19. D1 staples Phil Pharand and Mike Pierrecin combined for 11 catches for 108 yards and 2 TDs, while Guillaume Dagenais pitched in with 3 TDs on 5 catches. For Arouch, Simon Losier and Thomas Legault combined for 10 catches, 113 yards and 2 TDs.
The turning points in this game were the 3 INTs thrown by Eric Lalonde, 2 of them by Jean-Michel Alerte. Arouch led 19-13 at the break, but TWSS offense exploded in the second half, and made some crucial stops when needed. They pitched a shutout in the second half, outscoring Arouch 25-0.
In their next game, TWSS outlasted Preach 26-20 to solidify their place in the D3 semi finals.
Mangoose vs Free Smoke 1
Score: Mangoose (50-19)
Division 3
by J ROSE
In a game that seemingly over quickly, Mangoose layed the smacketh down on Free Smoke 1 50-19. Nic Schaefer went 21 for 28, for 194 yards and 7 TDs, finding 5 different receivers for TDs and looking like one of the elite QBs in D3. Thomas Coutu, Marc-Antoine Chaput and James Drysdale led the way for Mangoose on offense, while Anthony Drysdale led the way on defense with 2 picks. Mangoose was up 2 scores at the break and never looked back putting up a 50 spot in this one-sided affair.
Jeanslee Alexis was the lone bright spot for Free Smoke has he caught 6 balls for 114 yards and 3 TDs. With an extremely talented roster, including Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon, Jarryd Taylor and Zachary Alexis, Free Smoke on paper is one of the most talented teams in the division. Unfortunately on this night, the chemistry was not there, and they could get the offense or defense clicking.
Mangoose was unable to win their next game, as they fell to the Stoics in a closely contested game. Great season to the boys in green.
Semi-Final Recaps by Brent Bodkin
Big Fat Bats versus Rico Ryders – Division 5A
The Big Fat Bats used a strong second half and a 12-point swing to advance to the Division 5A championship game in their Semi-Final win over the Rico Ryders Monday night at Stade de Montreal.
After Denis Koutavas of the Rico Ryders scored his second touchdown of the game on a 16-yard catch to pull his team to within eight points of their opponents, the Big Fat Bats were able to stop the onside pass attempt, as Defensive Back forced an incompletion.
On the very next play, Jordan Lessard scored his third TD of the game to seal the win and give his team a shot at championship glory.
Final Score: Big Fat Bats (39-31)
No Friend Zone versus The Process – Division 5A
No Friend Zone used a dominant first half that saw them outscore their opponents (20-7), and a strong defensive performance led by Jerome Hovington, Anthony Pelletier, and a pick-six by Alexandre Noel, to a victory over The Process, to punch their ticket to the Division 5A championship game this Saturday night against the Big Fat Bats.
On offense, Quarterback Ignacio Valdes Manzanedo was sharp, as he went 11 of 18 for 202 yards and five touchdowns. Leading the way for the team in receiving was Felix Boutet, who had four catches for 74 yards and two TDs.
The Process were able to steady themselves after a rough opening stanza, as Quarterback Noah Groper threw three TD passes to Sacha Douan, and the brother combination of Yan and Ariel Librati, the damage was already done.
Final Score: No Friend Zone: (39-27)
Vengeance versus Braves 2.0 – Division 2
You can’t help but feel like this was a bit of teaser as both teams (Allstars vs Braves) will also be going head-to-head for the Div. 1 title this Sunday. If Wednesday night was a sneak peak, the Braves 2.0 will want to destroy the film.
With all due respect to Vengeance who earned the win, a big part of why the Braves 2.0 lost, was because they were the victim of self-inflicted wounds, as a team built on chemistry and near perfect football suffered multiple drops, turnovers, and missed tackles.
Vengeance realized there was blood in the water, and took advantage of the mistakes, as the combination of Quarterback Kevin Wyeth and Receiver shredded their opponent’s defense with the deep ball as he recorded two 40-yard touchdowns and finished the evening with nine catches for 140 yards and three touchdowns.
The Braves tried to respond with a receiving threat of their own in William Trottier, who was his team’s best player as he led them with three touchdowns of his own on 11 catches for 63 yards.
A big turning point in the game came in the second half, when Braves 2.0 Quarterback Jonathan Maheu threw an interception in the shadow of his own endzone to Kevin Wyeth, who ran it back to the 5-yard line. One play later, Wyeth would hit Snapper Matt Kirouac for a touchdown.
The Braves 2.0 would bounce back and put themselves in position to get the win as they took a late lead, as Trottier would score his third touchdown of the night with less than 30 seconds to five plays. Drysdale would cap his trio of TDs on an 8-yard score with two plays remaining.
A Hail Mary attempt by the Braves 2.0 was batted down short of the endzone by Michael Khazaka.
Final Score: Vengeance (34-32)
Urgence Medic versus Run It Once – Division 2
Urgence Medic took advantage of a Run It Once team who seemed lost offensively without the presence of their number one Receiver James Ohayon, as they punched their ticket to championship Sunday with the victory.
The loss of Ohayon was huge, as Run It Once was off the scoreboard completely in the first half as they found themselves down (20-0).
Urgence Medic came with a full roster, and Quarterback Jesse Dupuis took advantage, as he went 24 of 34 for 184 yards and four touchdowns. Dupuis good a solid job of spreading the ball around, as he completed passes for seven different receivers.
The best Receiver out of the group was Snapper Anthony Lapointe, who finished with eight receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns, leading his team in all three categories.
The team’s defense also played a big part in the win, as Dupuis and AJ Gomes recorded interceptions in the win. Run It Once made a valiant comeback, as they outscored their opponents (19-6), including a touchdown by Receiver Matt Bond with two plays remaining, but it was too little too late.
Final Score: Urgence Medic (26-19)
Braves versus Kangaroos – Division 1
Two of the best teams went head-to-head in Lachine on Sunday, and they did not disappoint. Big play after big play, first down after first down.
The Braves rode a dominant first half as they played nearly mistake free football before the break as they jumped out to a (34-20) lead on the shoulders on five touchdown passes by their Quarterback Jonathan Maheu.
The second half was a complete turn of fortune, as the Braves uncharacteristically turned the ball twice in the redzone, giving life to the Kangaroos, who capitalized on the final mistake as they would score with two plays remaining on a six-yard laser from Quarterback Dan Lazzara to AJ Gomes. The two connected one play later, on the 2-point conversion, which got the fans who packed the stands up on their feet and cheering in excitement as we were headed to overtime.
The Kangaroos rode the momentum a few plays earlier, as they struck first on a 2-point convo catch by Jeanslee Alexis. The Braves would tie it up on a catch in the endzone by Jonathan Chevalier.
Both teams would miss their next attempts. The Braves would break the tie, as Maheu found Alex Pilon in the back of the endzone for a 1-point conversion.
The Kangaroos would have one last chance to tie it up as they went for one, but Defensive Back Phil Pharand would bat down a pass intended for Gomes to seal the win for the Braves. There was a little bit of controversy on the play, as Rusher Julien Paiement appeared to have grabbed the shorts of Lazzara while attempting to sack him, but no flag was thrown on the play, inciting the hot-tempered QB, who appeared to be in the right for his anger on the no call.
Final Score: Braves (45-44)
Allstars versus Flag Moi L’Sac – Division 1
After being the home of FPF since 2005, Sunday marked the final Division 1 game at Catalogna in Lachine. What a fantastic send-off, as this game was just as good as the Braves and Kangaroos that took place earlier in the night.
The fireworks didn’t wait long to explode, as the Flag Moi L’Sac scored eight plays into the game, with the always lethal brother combination of Quarterback Alex Nadeau-Puize and his brother Samuel Nadeau-Puize connected for a 5-yard score to get things going to give their team a (6-0) lead.
After their opponents missed the 2-point conv, the Allstars needed just three plays to get on the board, as Kevin Wyeth hit Receiver Pat Jérome for a 40-yard touchdown. The team would be successful on their 2-point attempt, to take an (8-6) lead.
Samuel Nadeau-Puize would score his second touchdown of the game, but the Allstars would answer back as Chris Milard would score his first TD of the evening.
Things would get interesting as FMS would retake the lead on a 17-yard score by Guillaume Paquet, and to see the team elect to go for the onside pass as they looked to score again before halftime. The bold move would prove successful, as Alex Nadeau-Puize would connect with JP St-Pierre for a 28-yard gain right in front of a diving Jérome to extend the drive. Three plays later the team would find the endzone as the QB hit Guillaume Robert for a 2-yard trip to the endzone.
As you would expect, the Allstars would respond once again as Wyeth hit Milard for his second TD of the contest. The team would take a page out of the book of their opponents as they went for an onside pass as well. The move paid off, as Wyeth threw a bullet to Theo Ojeaha, who caught the pass and survived being thrown to the ground by Defensive Back Nicolas Arsenault-Hum for a 26-yard catch. Matt Kirouac would make the decision a wise one, as he found the endzone for a 2-yard TD four plays later.
The Allstars reached halftime with a (28-25) lead. There was no shortage of action in the second stanza, as both teams scored on three possessions.
Unfortunately for all involved, the game was stained by officiating, as a debatable flag was thrown for illegal contact on Patrick Chénard with four plays left in the contest.
The Flag Moi L’Sac was livid, and the Allstars took advantage of the call, as Wyeth found Quaid Johnson on a drag route in the back of the endzone with two plays to go in the game.
With one play remaining, Nadeau-Puize tossed a Hail Mary to endzone, but it was batted down by Kishon Thompson.
Final Score: Allstars (47-46)
