Recapping the Month of June for Coed and the Women’s Divisions
Wow! It has been a while since I last wrote a recap article about Coed and the Women’s division, sorry about that! To be exact, the last recap article that came out was on June 11th so the goal of this article will be to cover the main action that has happened since then.
If you are wondering when the rest of the report cards are coming out, worry not! They should be here within the next week. The goal is to get the Coed 3 report cards published by Monday and the Women’s division one should be coming soon after that.
Coed 2 Recap
There has not been that much change in the coed standings since I last wrote three weeks ago. The IG Team are still at the top of the standings and looking very much like title defenders. That being said, the teams on the rise over the last few weeks have been Kiss My End Zone and Never Too Late Team. KMEZ have been undefeated ever since they lost to Fitsquad and they are currently racing up the standings. If this team wins their last three games they will secure the top seed. As for Never Too Late Team, they have been keeping things exciting. Very exciting. They won their two last games by a combined score of three points. While they have been making mistakes, throwing picks and even getting exposed on defence they have also been finding ways to win and that is what matters most. While these are all some pretty obvious storylines, lets take a look at what we have learnt about the Coed 2 division over the past few weeks:
Fitsquad are out of shape: This team started off the season in tip top shape but their once stellar shape has taken a drastic dip for the worse. They have dropped two games in a row and if they do not turn things around quickly they might even lose out on a first round bye. The issue over the past few games has been their offensive performance. When this team is at their best, they can score on just about every single drive and as long as their defence can secure a stop or two, that is enough for them to win the game. A perfect example of that was their game versus Kiss My End Zone. Yes, they did concede 36 points in that one but at the same time they scored 46 so any defensive woes were easily covered up by a stellar offensive production. This team needs to find a way to start putting up big offensive numbers, and fast.
The Rookies have become veterans: Before the season started this Rookies team had very few familiar faces on it and did not really look like they knew what they were doing on an FPF field. Over the second half of the season, that has all changed. They hung 51 points on Deep Ballz, beat Fitsquad and crushed Les Marchands de Vitesse. This is not a team that anyone wants to face in the playoffs. However, Rookies are facing one of their toughest tasks of the season next week when they go up against the underrated Pig 6 team led by Vincent Cheung. If they can find a way to escape that one with a win, Coed 2 should be on high alert.
Pig 6 are divine: This team is good, really good. Frankly, I did not expect this team to amount to very much this season so the fact that they are currently in contention for one of the top three spots is a huge surprise. Pig 6 have done nothing extremely well but simultaneously have no weaknesses. They spread the ball well offensively, Cheung avoids costly turnovers and their defense consistently creates turnovers. This team has a tough, but not impossible schedule to finish the season and they could win all three of those games. If they win out, this team is just one KMEZ loss away from being the top seed in Coed 2.
The Vultures are circling: The metaphorical vultures are circling this Vultures team, and not in a good way. James Drysdale is the best athlete in Coed 2 but is still learning the QB position. They also have the irreplaceable Rachelle Vallieres. Between this team’s offensive struggles and the defensive issues that the loss of Vallieres will surely create, this team is taking on water from all sides. They have the tools on this roster to plug those holes, but it is just a question of whether they will have time before the playoffs begin.
Coed 3 Recap
There is still a huge talent gap in this Coed 3 division. There are two undefeated teams and two more teams with just two losses. The top-end teams in this division really look like good division D teams. On the other hand, you also have some teams that are new to FPF and new to Flag Football all together. The result is a top loaded division that will come down to the final few rounds of the playoffs. With all that being said, let’s look at the storylines that have emerged from the past few weeks in this division.
Fast not furious 3 are too good: You might be wondering why I have barely written about this 8-0 FNF3 team much. Simply put, it is because they have not yet had a competitive game all season. They have an outstanding +/- differential of + 178 and kind of feel like they are in a division of their own. The receiving depth on this team is crazy and while they might not have the most talented set of DBs, they can easily make up for that by scoring 40+ points a game. This team will finish the season undefeated and the only threat they have to the Coed 3 crown is Drink Team.
Free Agents are becoming a team: This team struggled over the first half of season, and struggled is putting it lightly. They lost 68-6 to Drink Team and 41-0 to Pig Six. Clearly, things were not going well. While this team is by no means a powerhouse or a title contender, they have started to turn the corner which is a great sign. They secured their first win of the season in week 6 during a dramatic game against Tigres and followed that up with an impressive 38-12 performance over Catching W’s. This team has started to limit turnovers which had been the biggest issue plaguing them all season. They have learnt that they can slowly march the ball down the field with methodic short passes. This team has a long way to go and making the playoffs will be an uphill battle, but they have shown huge improvement and that is great to see.
Drink Team are turning heads: No one was talking about Drink Team before the season. They looked like a revamped version of Sneaky Snakes and no one was that excited about that prospect. Boy, have they proved people wrong. The most impressive thing about this team is the fact that they have only conceded 87 points all season. They are averaging just over 8 points against a game which is beyond impressive. Erika Magini has been a star for this team as well. She leads Drink Team with 11 touchdowns and has 241 receiving yards to go along with it. Defensively, they had 27 interceptions. This team is great, the only question that remains is if they are better than FNF3 or not.
Women’s Division Recap
The first thing you need to know about the women’s division is that we have a very clear frontrunner in each division. In W1, Subzero are by far the best of their division and are one of the best female teams I have ever seen play. Their only rival is WOS and despite their 7-1 record, they are ages behind Subzero. If I had to place a bet on any team in all of FPF winning the championship in their division, I would place my money on Subzero to claim the W1 crown. In W2, it is a similar story. The Wildcats are running away with this division. They are 7-1 and their only loss came at the hands of the mighty Subzero. There is no clear contender in the W2 division. While it is obvious who the favorites are, let’s take a look at which other storylines have been developing in the Women’s divisions over the past few weeks.
Les P’tites Miettes are making big waves: This team got off to a dreadful start to the season. They had a challenging schedule and dropped their first three games and found themselves sitting in last place. Since then, they have turned things around in a huge way. Their only loss has come against the mighty Subzero and even in that game, they managed to score 12 points which is not an easy feat! This team has two more very winnable games left on their schedule and they could very well go from 0-3 to finishing in second place.
Congestion in the standings: There are just two points separating second from sixth in the standings. Things are very close and it will be a battle down to the wire for who can finish at the top of the pack. Red Nation are an interesting team to keep an eye on in this group. They have two games left to play and are well placed to make a move up the standings, but they also lost arguably the best player in the division when Rachelle Vallieres went down injured. Wolfpack control their own destiny but things are looking tough for the team. They are the only team who has played seven games, the rest have played 8, which means they have a game in hand over the rest of the pack. While they might have the games in hand, they also have a brutal schedule to finish the year. They are facing off against WOS and Subzero which are the two best teams in W1.
Blue Thunder are sizzling out: I made a quick power ranking and two weeks and I had Blue Thunder ranked as one of the top teams in the division. Boy, have things changed since then. They have lost six games in a row and are now on the verge of not making the playoffs. The main issue plaguing this team is the turnovers. They have thrown 17 interceptions and only 14 touchdowns which is definitely not a great issue. On the bright side, they have managed to pick off their opponents ten times which is an impressive feat. They also are getting defensive production across the board. This team needs to find the magic sauce that they had back in the first two weeks, and they need to do it quickly, otherwise their season might come to a premature end.
Team of the Season to Date:
Usually, I name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one and vice versa. Since I have missed so many teams of the week, I figured that I would do a team of the season, up to now, for each division in order to highlight all of the exceptional performances I might have missed. In the spirit of the Coed and Women’s divisions, every team of the week will have a minimum of two female players on the offensive and defensive team.
