Power Rankings from Coed and the Women’s Division
The Coed and Women’s divisions are at an interesting point in the season. Since no games have been played on the past two Sundays due to the long weekends, we have only had games on Mondays which means far fewer matches than usual have taken place and I am starved for content! Instead of doing my usual recaps and previews, I will be making mid-season power rankings for Coed 1, Coed 2 and the Women’s division. Keep reading to see where your team is ranked!
Women’s Division Power Rankings
1. Les P’tites Miettes (2-2)
At my first pick and already causing controversy! I know Red Nation are 3-1 and defeated Les P’tites Miettes last week, but I still think LPM are the best team in this division. For starters, they have scored the most points in the division and conceded the least and they are the only team with a positive +/- balance. Morgane Cosimano-Valois leads this division with 12 touchdowns, which is twice as many as anyone else has thrown for. As if that were not enough, Les P’tites Miettes also have the deepest receiving core. Noémie Beaudet is currently leading the charge with 163 receiving yards and 4 TD. However even if a team manages to cover Beaudet, LPM can still turn to Florence Normand, Marie-Pier Dalpé or Rachel Shea, all of whom have over 100 receiving yards and 3 TDs already. Long story short, LPM have a top-level quarterback and can field four outstanding receivers. I do not see any defence that can go toe to toe with them.
2. Red Nation (3-1)
Red Nation are currently sitting atop the Women’s division standings with a 3-1 record and 6 points and there is a lot to like about this team. Geraldine Cabillo-Abante has been off to a killer start this season and is amassing receiving yards at a rate of nearly 75 a game. This team has also finally gotten the talented Lamees Aljoundi back from injury. She is definitely going to elevate the Red Nation’s fearsome defence to yet another level. The main reason why that defence is so terrifying is the play of Rachelle Vallieres. In just 4 games she has already amassed a herculean six interceptions and five defended passes. To make matters even worse for opposing quarterbacks, she has returned four of those interceptions for scores.
While Red Nation does a lot that excites me, they also have me worried. Quarterback Allyson Sobol has thrown more interceptions (8) then she has touchdowns (5) and only has a quarterback rating of 52.2 For this team to move up in the power rankings, they will need to prove that Sobol has learnt how to protect the ball and they will have the chance to do that next week when they face off against Les P’tites Miettes. If Red Nation manage to win that game they could close out the season on a hot streak since they will be facing Villa once and Strangers twice, two teams they expect to beat.
3. Strangers (1-2)
There is a lot to like about this Strangers team. They took a licking in week 1 in the form of a 57-6 loss to Les P’tites Miettes but did not let that affect them. As a matter of fact, they bounced back in herculean fashion in week 2 and handed LPM a 20-19 loss. In week three, they were very close to beating Red Nation. They led 14-0 at the half and RN had to score 19 in the second half, including a touchdown as time expired to win the game. All that to say, Strangers beat the top team in my power rankings and came within a few plays of beating the second placed team. More than any other team, I cannot wait to see how this group grows. They have never played before so it will obviously take a while for chemistry to develop. One connection that has been firing on all cylinders is the one between Strangers QB Jade Mchugh Thibault and Sarah-Maude Mathieu. Mathieu has accounted for nearly half of the Strangers receiving yards and has found the endzone twice. While she is a great receiver, Strangers need to do a better job of spreading the ball. Despite having a roster of ten players, only five have caught passes. One player I am waiting to see make a difference is Lory Ouellette. She is excelling in Coed 2 with Kiss My End Zone and has even made the jump to play in Coed 1 with EZFun. She is a gifted route runner with top level speed. The fact that she has not yet got a single reception proves that Strangers are not using all the weapons at their disposal.
This team has two games against Villa coming up which is exactly what the doctor ordered. If they can start knocking off some easier wins all while getting their offence in tune, this could be a team to watchout for as the playoffs arrive.
4. Villa (1-2)
This team looked like they were going to be the class of the division after they dominated Red Nation 31-6 in week 1. Since then, things have just gone downhill for this side coached by Gino Di Fazio. They got blown out by Les P’tites Miettes 37-6 in week 2 and Red Nation exacted sweet revenge in week 3 when they shutout Villa on their way to a 18-0 win. This Villa team differs drastically on each side of the ball. Offensively, they have major issues. They have scored 6 points in their past two games. Lauriane Lapointe led this team to their only victory but has not been playing for Villa since week 1. Gaby Oppedisano has taken over the helm of this offense but has struggled mightily. While Oppedisano is not getting the job done for this Villa offence, she is receiving very little outside help. Villa has not run the ball all season and has not tried any quarterback other than Oppedisano. When a quarterback has seven times more interceptions than touchdowns, the coaching staff needs to start getting creative and we have not seen that happen yet for Villa.
For all the struggles offensively, this Villa team has been tremendous on the defensive side of the ball. They have five different players who have recorded interceptions. Abigaelle Perreault and Elodie Lachapelle are both amongst the top ballhawks in the division and have three interceptions apiece. This Villa defence will create turnovers and stop their opponents on downs multiple times a game. If their offence can start scoring just two or three times a game, Villa will start stacking up the wins.
Coed 1 Power Rankings
1. The Justice League (3-2)
I have been saying this all season, but no team has more potential than The Justice League. From top to bottom they are loaded with playmakers and fantastic athletes. What separates this team from the rest of the competition in Coed 1 is the production from their female players. Sara Parker is once again looking like one of the best passers in the division. She has thrown for over 1,000 yards in the first five games and is on track for a 2,000-yard season with nearly 50 TDs. While Parker is competing for the quarterback of the year award, other teams are barely completing any passes to their female players. Success in Coed is all about having the best women and Parker is unequivocally the most valuable female player in Coed. Talking about production from female players, The Justice League is also getting that on the defensive side of the field. Three of their four interceptions have come courtesy of their female players. If this team has one weakness it is at the rusher position. Kerdley Micourt is averaging a sack a game but I am not sure that he has the athleticism to keep up with some of the more mobile passers in this division.
2. EZFun (3-2)
A lot has been said about the fact that KMO quarterback Stephen Harripersaud has not yet thrown an interception. Well, I am sure Jeremy White would like to point out that he has also been perfect so far this season, throwing for 10 TDs and no interceptions in his first two starts. In the three games that White missed, Samuel Emilio Pelchat did a fantastic job filling in. He threw four times more scores than he did interceptions and kept this team afloat while White was on vacation. This team is deep at the receiver position with five players already eclipsing the century mark in terms of receptions. While they might have phenomenal male receivers, they are having issues getting their female players involved in the passing game. Lory Ouellette, Annabelle Boutin, Clara Nguyen, Rosalie Ouimet and Gabriella Munteanu have caught just ten passes in this teams first five games. Veronique Beaudoin is the only female receiver who has had a significant impact on the passing game. She is averaging two catches a game and has nearly 140 receiving yards on the season. While it is great that Beaudoin is getting her hands on the ball, this team still has a long way to go in regards to involving their female players and until that happens, they cannot have the top spot in these power rankings.
3. Kiss My Outlaws (2-1)
We still have a relatively small sample size from Kiss My Outlaws since they have only played three games. However in those three games, their quarterback Stephen Harripersaud has yet to throw an interception. While they might be doing a fantastic job of protecting the ball on offence, their defence has not been doing Harripersaud very many favors. Their defence only has three interceptions on the season and two sacks. Simply put, their defence is not making plays. This is the first time that this group is playing in Coed 1 and while there are lots of talented pieces on the team the defensive chemistry is still something they are working on. They have a great test coming up this week when they face off against EZFun and I expect Joey Notaro to be a difference maker in that game. He is currently riding a streak of three consecutive games with pick sixes in division C. While that would be impressive for a safety, Notaro has done that all while playing rusher. On the bright side for KMO’s defence, they do not need to be exceptional to win games. With a quarterback like Harripersaud under center, a stop a game should be enough to secure them the win.
4. Les Petits Phoques (3-2)
Considering the fact that Dom Lefort has missed two games, Les Petits Phoques should be very content to be sitting at 3-2. In the three games that Lefort has played he has thrown for nearly 600 yards and 15 TDs. The one issue for both Lefort and his backup Alexandre Poulin-Rioux is how many interceptions they have thrown. Les Petits Phoques have been picked off eight times with Lefort and Poulin-Rioux having each thrown four. In Coed 1, games can be decided by a single turnover so when you are turning over the ball at a rate of 1.5 times a game you are seriously hurting your odds of winning. To make matters worse, their defence has only four interceptions on the season. This team has the potential to be exceptional, but they need to clear up their turnover ratio. If either their defence starts producing more interceptions or their offence is safer with the ball, this team could become a major threat.
5. Fast not Furious (1-3)
At the beginning of the season I said that this Fast not Furious team would go as far as Justin Weir could carry them and I was wrong. Weir has gotten off to a fine start this season throwing for nearly 700 yards and 15 TDs all while adding another 100 yards of offence to that tally with his legs. What has been letting this team down is their defence. They have conceded 122 yards in their first four games which is an average of over 30 points conceded a game. In other words, the only way for this team to win is for them to score on every single drive and that is a lot to ask for from a quarterback in his first season in Coed 1. Weir is playing great football, but with his defence playing like it is, he needs to be perfect to win and asking for perfection is a pretty tall order. With the plethora of weapons that this team has, they need to find a way to start producing stops on defence.
6. Fitsquad (1-3)
You have to wonder what Fitsquad’s rationale was when they entered into Coed 1 this season off the heels of their defeat in the Coed 2 finals during the winter season. In large part, their roster remained identical, they just replaced Felix Goulet with FPF veteran Seth Galina. While Galina has had success in the lower divisions of FPF, he is not a difference maker in Coed 1. He struggles with accuracy and with the level of athletes in this division, he is bound to keep on getting picked off in the second half of the season. They have scored the least points in the division (78) and show no signs of improving offensively anytime soon. This teams biggest issue is that just about anyone can play man coverage against them and that is the kind of coverage against which Galina struggles the most.
Coed 2 Power Rankings
1. Kiss My End Zone (3-0-1)
Kiss My End Zone got their season off to a great start with a win over Les Princesses and it looked like Alex Noel was ready to lead this team to the promised land. That vision quickly got derailed when Noel broke his clavicle playing in division C. While he is the team’s #1 cheerleader and can be found smiling and chatting on the sidelines during most KMEZ games, he is likely out for the season. On the bright side for Kiss My End Zone, Ignacio Valdes Manzanedo has been tremendous as their backup quarterback. In his three games under center he has thrown for over 600 yards and 17 scores all without throwing an interception. If there is one area where the injury to Noel is hurting this team it is actually on defence. Noel is a fantastic and speedy defender. With Noel out of the lineup and an ankle injury limiting Valdes Manzanedo’s ability to take snaps of the defensive side of the ball this team has a limited number of defenders and have been paying the price. They are averaging over 20 points against a game and even conceded three scores to both Gorillas and Iced Out. Last season KMEZ rode a stellar defence to a championship. If they hope to go back-to-back their defence will need to step it up in the second half of the season.
2. 3HUNNAS (4-1-1)
It is very difficult to evaluate 3HUNNAS because you never know what roster they will be fielding. The one that played in their last game versus Kiss My End Zone was the strongest version of this 3HUNNAS team. Anthony Sotomayor is a very talented quarterback and should be the option moving forward for this team as long as he is there. The presence of Nykolas Pierre-Masse also elevates this team to a whole other level. Pierre-Masse and James Drysdale are hands down the best two receivers in Coed. However, Pierre-Masse does play for Queens University and training camp typically starts in early August so you have to wonder if he will still be around during the playoffs for this team. All in all, this is a very talented team and their best roster can go toe to toe with anyone in the division. The reason they are not in the top spot is because I do not have confidence in them being able to field their best roster week in and week out.
3. Les Princesses (3-1)
It looks like Les Princesses have finally figured out who their quarterback will be and they settled on Mikael Arseneau. While Arseneau has been very serviceable as a quarterback, that is not his best position. Arseneau is a phenomenal receiver so playing him at quarterback greatly depletes this team’s receiving corps. In terms of receivers, this team only really has one. Dimitri Melsbach has caught 16 passes for a total of 277 yards and six scores. Those are great numbers, but they also make you worried about how much this team is spreading the ball. Ultimately if a majority of your passing yards are all going to the same player your offence becomes predictable and easier to stop. As the season progresses, I am worried that this Les Princesses offence will be unidimensional and easy to stop. Unless another receiving threat emerges, things might start going downhill in a hurry for this season.
4. Sneaky Snakes (3-2)
There is a lot to like about this Sneaky Snakes team. In just their first season in Coed, they have already understood the importance of getting their female players involved. More than just being involved, Marilou Côté Noël leads this team in receiving yards with 173. On the defensive side of things, it has been the Julien Proulx show so far this season. He leads the team with three interceptions and also has two sacks to add on to that total for good measure. If there is one area that worries me about this team it is their penchant for turnovers. Quarterback David Brisson has thrown six interceptions in his four games under center. While a pick and a half a game is not awful, it is certainly not doing your defence any favors. If this team wants to go from the middle of the pack to becoming title contenders, Brisson will need to throw less than an interception a game for the second half of the season.
5. Blue Wave (3-3)
Apart from Jerry Delva having his jersey on back to front in the team photo, there is very little about this team that stands out for me. They are average in just about every single category including their record which is 3-3. Their quarterback play has been the best thing about this team. Jonathan Cantin might only be throwing for two touchdowns a game, but he is also limiting turnovers, having only thrown three picks all season. Apart from a good quarterback, this team is also loaded at the receiver position. Maryse Paquette is leading the charge with 180 receiving yards and three scores. Defensively, Cantin and Paquette have combined for an impressive six interceptions. While this team does a lot of things well, they do very few things excellently. This is a great first season for the team, but it feels like they are one difference maker away from being a top dog in Coed 2.
6. Gorillas (1-4)
This team has a roster of over 20 people and has started three different players under center. Simply put, they are lacking consistency. Having played against this team, they are a lot better than their record indicates. Jeff Brown is an incredibly experienced center and is leading this team in receiving yards with 245. Outside of Brown, things get slightly more complicated. Noah Levine is the only other player with more than 100 receiving yards. Defensively this team has me worried. They do not have the athleticism to man-up against teams and they are lacking the experience to play zone-defence. The result is an extremely porous defence that has conceded more than 150 points in their first five games. They also only have one interception all season. While Gorillas might be able to score points, it is looking like they will never be able to score more than they concede.
7. Iced Out (0-6)
If there is any consolation for this team being winless, it is that they have the nicest jerseys in Coed 2. Clothing aside, there is not much to cheer for Iced Out. They started two different quarterbacks so far this season and neither Emmanuel Brûlé nor Jeff Suarez has had very much success. As a matter of fact, this team has thrown for more interceptions than it has touchdowns. The only bright spot so far this season for Iced Out has been the play of Thomas Kerton. He is amongst the top receivers in the division in terms of both receiving yards and touchdowns. Defensively he has recorded his team’s only interception. Unfortunately for Kerton, there is only so much he can do without proper quarterback play. I have a hard time seeing Iced Out winning a game until they find a solution to their quarterback woes.
