Power Rankings and Much More From Coed and Women’s Division

After what feels like forever, I am finally back! First of all, sorry for the pause in articles. I was travelling on back-to-back weekends and when you combine that with final exams and papers, there definitely was a dip in article production. Since I missed so many games, I do not think my usual article would be the best way to summarize everything that I missed. I had previously promised a second edition of the power rankings so I think this week would be the perfect opportunity for Coed 1 and Coed 2 power rankings. Since the women’s division playoffs are kicking off tonight, I will breakdown the quarterfinal matchups. Finally, I will throw in a team of the week for weeks 7 and 8. Sorry again for the delay in getting this out, we should be back on a track for a weekly article for the rest of the season.

Coed 1 Power Rankings

1. Party Mix

Record: 6-2

Previous Ranking: 2nd

Party Mix claimed the top seed after their historic week 5 win over Power Rangers. They looked ready to cruise into the playoffs as the top seed until just one week later when they lost 25-24 to EZFun. At that point they still had two more games left to play against EZFun and things were looking dicey for Party Mix. They silenced those worries with a convincing week 8 win over EZFun and they have a chance tonight to prove once and for all that they are the better team when they face off against EZFun for a third time this season. What has me so excited about Party Mix going into the playoffs is knowing that they can get even better when the playoffs come around. Alexis Gaumont has only played four games with this team so if he is a fulltime participant in the postseason, Party Mix will be a menace.

2. Power Rangers

Record: 6-2

Previous Ranking: 1st

Up until week 4, I thought Power Rangers were going to run away with this division. As a matter of fact, I was ready to crown them as champions before the season even started. While Power Rangers have been good, they have not been as dominant as I expected them to be. I think a majority of their struggles have to do with the regression of their quarterback Tam Vilaydeth. While he has posted stellar numbers, throwing for nearly 1,500 yards and 40 TDs he does not quite pass the eye test. He is not delivering the ball with the same zip and accuracy that we are used to seeing. In their famous game against Party Mix, that lack of ball velocity led to turnovers and ultimately cost them the game. Vilaydeth has rushed back from a gruesome arm injury this season, so it looks like he is not fully healed. The only good news for Power Rangers is that Vilaydeth is likely getting healthier and healthier each week. If he can return to 100% form, this team should be championship bound. The other strength of this team is their female players. Jasmine Farmer and Constance Millaire are on a absolute tear this season. Farmer is the only player in Coed 1 with more than 10 TD grabs. She has 13 on the season which is four more than her closest rival.

3. EZFun

Record: 4-3-1

Previous Ranking: 4th

Had I made these rankings after week 5 when EZFun upset Power Rangers, they might have been in first place. Unfortunately for EZFun things have gone straight downhill from there. They tied Two and a Half Kittens before getting blown out by Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. The common factor in those two disappointing results was the strong rushing of the other team. Jeremy White was sacked 5 times over those two games. Against SHCS, he did not even crack the 100 passing yards mark. My issue with this team is they can either be the best in the division or amongst the worst and it all depends on the strength of the rusher they are playing against. This teams is built around White’s ability to extend plays with his legs and when a rusher can neutralize that, EZFun’s entire offensive playbook is nullified.

4. Bishop Sycamore

Record: 5-4

Previous Ranking: 5th

When this team lost Tommy Roadley Trohatos I thought they were done for. In some weird turn of fate, losing their best player might have been the best thing that happened to Bishop Sycamore all season. While Roadley Trohatos is a fantastic athlete, he is not a natural quarterback. He has been replaced with Sara Parker who is the very definition of a pure passer. Over her first two games, Parker has already thrown for 400 yards and a 117.5 passer rating. She has a fantastic cast of athletic receivers and that is exactly what Parker needs to succeed. On the defensive side of the ball, Jessica Bositampen has been the class of the division. She has more than twice as many sacks as any other rusher in this division. She has been terrifying opposing quarterbacks and has the ability to destroy mobile quarterbacks. I am sure that Jeremy White is dreading the thought of playing Bositampen in the playoffs. Bishop Sycamore are the biggest wildcard in this playoff hunt. If anyone can pull off an upset of the top teams, it is Bishop Sycamore.

5. Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce

Record: 4-5

Previous Ranking: 6th

It feels like every single team has improved since my previous power rankings and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce are no exception. After starting the season 0-3 they have turned things around and have gone 3-2 over their last fives games. They have definitely benefited from an easier schedule to close out the year. The biggest improvement for SHCS has been the play of their quarterback JF Marquis. He threw seven interceptions in his first three games and then threw just three in his next five. Marquis is one of the best passers in this division and as long as he plays like it, Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce will be competitive in most of their games. The weakness of this team is their defence. However many points this team scores, their defence can concede more. With the way their defence has been playing as soon as Marquis turns the ball over once or twice the game is over. As good as Marquis is, this team’s defence needs to take a step up if they want to make a playoff push. Their defence has just six interceptions and six sacks on the season. I am not sure what the solution is, but something on defence needs to change for SHCS.

6. Two and a Half Kittens

Record: 2-4-2

Previous Ranking: 3

Two and a Half Kittens have come plummeting down the rankings since my previous rankings. While the Joey Taylor in Coed experiment has been a success, the rest of this team has not lived up to the hype. While Taylor has done his part, passing for  over 1,000 yards, 30 TDs and less than 10 turnovers there has not been anyone else on this team that has excited me. This team doesn’t have an offensive game breaker. For some reason top level FPF talents like Marco Bertoldi and Zach Zwirn have looked very average in Coed 1. They have both had solid seasons, but neither have been unstoppable forces of nature like I expected them to be. More than anything, this team has proved that you are only as good as your female players. Shawna Motuzas is the team’s leading female receiver and she has 13 catches on the season. Simply put, the four women on this team have less than 20 receptions between all of them this season. While they might not be the best cast of female players in Coed, most of the blame falls on Taylor in my opinion. He is amongst the best play callers in FPF and his offensive system relies on spacing to get players open, not athleticism. The women on this team have been open a heck of a lot more than 19 times this season and Taylor has not been doing a good enough job of getting them the ball.

7. Average and Savage

Record: 0-7-1

Previous Ranking: 7th

Average and Savage are still looking for their first win of the season and with games left against Power Rangers and Party Mix, the odds of them getting a notch in the win column does not look very good. I love the balance of players that this team has. Alexia Vitti is one of the most underrated female players in the division. She is a fantastic football player who can play just about any position. The fact that she only has one reception all season is criminal. Defensively however, Vitti has been a leader. She is second on the team in terms of both interceptions and tackles. Other than the quarterback play, A&S’s biggest issue this season has been their lack of big plays on defence. They have only produced three interceptions in their eight games played. Simply put when you are struggling to score, you need your defence to be the difference maker and A&S have not been able to count on their defence anymore than they have on their offence this season.

Coed 2 Power Rankings

Please note that to avoid any bias, the first three teams were ranked by fellow writer Paolo Della Rocca.

1. Kiss My End Zone

Record: 7-2

Previous Ranking: 1st

Kiss My End Zone have the most points for and the least against so far this season. The biggest difference the second half of this season has been the emergence of James Drysdale. For everyone that follows the Vultures franchise, you know how good Drysdale is. Over the first few games of the season he was relatively quiet. After totaling less than 50 receiving yards across the first five games of the season, he went off for 70 against Y&Y and another 45 versus Fitsquad. Drysdale is one of the best athletes in the division and the idea of him and David de Andrade clicking should terrify other teams in the division. As it has been all season, the only thing this team needs to clean up is the interceptions. This team’s defence is good enough to give de Andrade two to three stops a game so as long as he throws less interceptions than that, KMEZ are in a great spot.

2. Fitsquad

Record: 6-2-1

Previous Ranking: 4th

Fitsquad have lived up to their potential in the 2nd half of the season. Most importantly, quarterback Felix Goulet has started consistently showing up to the games. After a quarterback carrousel during the first few weeks of the season, Goulet has claimed the reigns and is running with it. While Goulet has been the driving force behind Fitsquad’s climb in the rankings, he is also their biggest liability. He loves the deep ball and will force the ball deep time after time. In their most recent game against Kiss My End Zone, he only completed two more passes to his team than to his opponents. He completed six passes and threw four interceptions. The main reason behind that was his stubbornness to force the ball deep despite the shorts being open. If Fitsquad can calm things down offensively and start driving the field methodically they will be an extremely difficult team to beat.

3. 3HUNNAS

Record: 3-4-1

Previous Ranking: 3rd

Despite a recent dip in form, 3HUNNAS have not slid down in the power rankings. The main reason behind that is the potential that this team has. They destroyed Fitsquad 32-6 in week 4 and have the potential to do that to any team in the division on any given night. The first thing that 3HUNNAS need to be successful is for their star QB George Jean Louis to show up. In the six games that he has played he has thrown for 664 yards, 19 TDs and two interceptions. The only games he has missed are both of 3HUNNAS games versus Kiss My End Zone. Jean Louis brings a whole other dimension to this offence that Rayan Mezhoudi cannot. Jean Louis stretches the field whereas Mezhoudi is reliant on the short passing game. As long as Jean Louis is there for the playoffs, the sky is the limit for 3HUNNAS.

4. Y&Y

Record: 5-3

Previous Ranking: 2nd

Y&Y have been very hot and cold over the past few weeks. They won a thrilling game against Kiss My End Zone but also lost badly to La Secte. On both sides of the ball, this team’s issue is the long ball. Offensively, Robert White doesn’t have fantastic arm strength or accuracy and struggles on deeper passes. In the game I saw him play, he often had receivers open for big gains and just missed them. His best passes are the ones that travel less than 10 yards in the air and that limits the play calling of this team. Defensively, their game versus Fitsquad exposed that Y&Y also have an issue defending the deep ball. They conceded 156 passing yards on just 12 completions in that game. This team has a ton of talent. Justin Weir and Mathew Peacok are amongst the best receivers in this division. If White can just improve his accuracy, this team could finish the season on top.

5. La Secte

Record: 1-5-2

Previous Ranking: 6th

La Secte won their first game in years, back in week 5 when they defeated Y&Y 32-20.  Just two weeks after they were within a score of beating Team Commando. La Secte have gone from a team that was fighting to stay in matches to a team that is fighting for wins and that is a great transition to see. It has also been great to see receivers other than Alyson Francillon emerging for La Secte. Olivier Jannini went off against Team Commando catching 5 passes for 53 yards and two scores. If La Secte can get a few more contributors on offence, who knows what might happen. They may even be able to add a playoff win to their record.

6. Team Commando

Record: 1-7

Previous Ranking: 5th

Team Commando are the Two and a Half Kittens of Coed 2, let me explain. This team has enough talent to be amongst the top teams in this division. Louis-Philippe Naud has developed into an impressive quarterback. At receiver, Edouard Gagnon and Clovis Desrochers are the most productive duo in the division and have combined for 13 scores and nearly 700 receiving yards. Despite all the talent on this roster, they have not found a way to include their female players in the passing game. Clara Archambault leads this team with 6 receptions, which is less than a catch a game. The three women on this team have a total 11 catches. Just like Two and a Half Kittens, this lack of catches speaks far more to the teams playcalling than to the talent level of these women. I know for a fact that Ariane Brenko is a talented receiver and a top-level athlete. For her to have only four receptions all season is criminal underutilization.

Women’s Division Quarterfinal Predictions:

Bleu Poud (7-1) vs The Rock (2-6)

As much as FPF is an unpredictable game where any team can win on any given night, I have a very hard time seeing a path to victory for The Rock in this one. They have scored the least points in the Women’s 1 division whereas the Bleu Poud have conceded the least. If The Rock have any hope in this one, they will need to find a way to make the game slow and messy. The less scores and the more turnovers there are in this game the more it will benefit The Rock. In the end, I do not see Emmanuelle Bronsard who has thrown three interceptions all season making very many mistakes in this one. The last time these two teams played, Bleu Poud scored 28 and did not concede a single point. I do not see this game going very differently at all.

Prediction: Pleu Poud

Brutes (5-2) vs Griffons (3-5)

This might be the easiest prediction I make all season. According to what I have heard, Griffons will not be able to make it to this game and will forfeit it, ending their season.

Prediction: Brutes

Flamants Roses (3-4) vs Concordia (3-5)

Concordia have been the hardest team to predict all season long. This team is very obviously brimming with talent, and I have been waiting for that wealth of talent to translate into wins. Time and time again I have bumped them up my power rankings or chosen them to win based of their potential and every single time they have made me look stupid. Have I learnt? Definitely not. Sara Parker has been excelling in Coed 1 and it is only a matter of time before that play translates over to the Women’s division. More than just Parker, I trust Concordia’s offence. They have always been able to score, they have just conceded more points than they score. On the other hand, Flamants Roses have scored the second least points in the division. Concordia will not be perfect in this one, their offence will make mistakes and they will probably even turn the ball over a few times. However, when you are playing a team that struggles offensively like the Flamants Roses, that is ok.

Prediction: Concordia

Week 7 Teams of the Week

Every week, I will name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one and vice versa. I will name one team of the week for both Coed divisions combined and a separate team of the week for the Women’s division. You can make the team of the week in both divisions. For the Coed team of the week, there will always be a minimum of two women on the offensive and defensive team.
