Les Buddays Have Been Great but Will They be the Best

Like many men this past Valentines’ Day I was coerced into watching the movie sensation 50 Shades of Grey. In the hopes that this would be as strong an aphrodisiac as oysters and chocolate covered strawberries, I found myself somewhat excited to over pay for a film at the Cinema who still hasn’t evolved enough to provide me with a cocktail during my sitting.  Instead I was sorely disappointed.

The movie, expectedly did not go off the reservation and bring borderline pornography to the silver screen.  I expected however, given the hype, that this would be a hyper sexualized chick flick. I expected, given it’s budget and mass appeal that I could expect an interesting story and good, albeit-cheesy dialogue.  I was wrong.

The acting was atrocious, the movie was oddly paced with the bulk of the movie showcasing a man and woman talking about vaguely sexual acts, the script read like a series of drunken sexts and  I’ve forgotten more stimulating material after a night of way too many rounds (in the bar and beyond).

The point is that, nearing the midway point we can see which teams have bought into their identity, which one’s still haven’t put a script together and which one’s have yet to put pen to paper.  Reviewing your teams has made me feel like a Hollywood executive scrutinizing your project and deciding which one’s were worthy of my investment and which were still works in progress.  I’ve broken down your teams, graded your performance thus far and picked out who the stars of your cast are.  It’s the half way point gents, get your performances straight, remember your lines or the impartial director known as the playoffs will be calling “CUT!” on your season before it ever got started.

Mid Season Breakdown

So before my article gets met with the expected vitriol and vehemence (feel free to look up those words Brent Callender, don’t worry you have other talents.  I’ve heard you brush your own teeth these days).  Now, the midseason grade may look odd at first but remember, I am evaluating you on the following scale:

A- to A+: I am wowed.  Your team is truly amazeballs. If you were a woman I’d pay for our meal instead of leaving you with the bill as I left the restaurant pretending that I just needed to use the restroom.

B- to B+: It’s gone better than I expected, I may even call you back in three days; five if your lucky.

C- to C+: You’re exactly how I thought you’d be.  You put out but you’re essentially a starfish. Interesting enough but I can’t do much with you.

D- to D+: This really isn’t working out.  My best friend will call me pretending to be a fire in my building and I need to tend to it.  I’m sorry I need to cut this short. I just can’t stay.

F:We got set up on a blind date. My friend and/or family member who brought us together clearly thought I was blind because, well, YOU UGGGGLLLLYYY!!!

Here we go:

30. Genié 3D

Mid-Season Record: 0-4-1

Analysis: The Genié are a team that just may be out classed this season.  While I would have built some chemistry with players and cut my teeth in a lower division first, Genié 3D should be applauded for jumping in blindly to D3.  That being said, we’ve gotten a lot of what we expected out of Genié 3D.  They have a quarterback who has struggled with protecting the ball in the past, they are a fairly inexperienced squad that will ‘make it a game’ against weak opponents but lose when you’d expect them to.

Key Players: Alex Hovington, Alexandre Poulin Rioux
Best Acquisition:
n/a

Predicted Record: 0-9-1

Mid-Season Grade: D+

29. Rudebwoys

Mid-Season Record: 0-5

Analysis: The Rudebwoys are one of those teams that you never know what to expect.  In some seasons they are weak and, in others, with seemingly the same roster they go on streaks and surge past opponents. Domenic Tosi is a remarkable athlete, although you would never guess it unless you’ve played against him.  He has a great arm and is remarkably quick.  They have been getting closer to victory in their last two weeks.  Having lost to Moose by 2 and Texas BareManz by 8, they have a lot to build on.  I think they have the opportunity to upset a couple of teams here but I do not think that it’ll be more than that.  Interestingly, they’ve added Jonathan Petard to their roster on a full-time basis, yet they have not used him to his full capacity.

Key Players: Bryan Eudoxie, Eugene McLaren, Doug Gelevan
Best Acquisition:
Jonathan Petard

Predicted Record: 2-8

Mid-Season Grade: D

 28. Zio e Fraté

***Mid-Season Record: 0-4

Analysis: Coming into this season GM Koletheras and I had a well-documented dispute as to whether or not Zio e Fraté would be serious contenders.  To be honest, this is a lot of what I expected from them.  The talent pool has gotten too deep in division 3 and with all the strong quarterbacks, returning, debuting or emerging, Antonio Lanni does not fit the bill.  The defense will be strong and they rotate a lot of higher division talent but I do not think it will be enough to succeed. Plain and simple you need to score points to win. I think there are a couple of second half wins on this schedule but they will be close games at that.

Key Players: Alex Apostolakis, Antonio Lanni, Giovanni Lanni, Marco Masciotra
Best Acquisition:
Matthew Petrone

Predicted Record: 2-8

Mid-Season Grade: C-

27. Les Blue Branleurs

Mid-Season Record: 1-4-1

Analysis: Having struggled in Division D in the spring there weren’t a lot of expectations for Les Blues Branleurs this season.  They are a group of young, athletic, and energetic players.  They have a lot of skill on both sides of the ball.  In the end it all comes down to Minh Ton-That.  This team will be a lot better as he develops.  He is making some great plays but he is also making some key errors in games.  If he can limit those LBB will be a far more competitive team.  That said, they have shown that they can score and make big plays on defense.  I think that this will be a great developing season for them but one that will see little success.

Key Players: Minh Ton-That, Guillaume Hamelin
Best Acquisition:
Reda Malki

Predicted Record: 2-7-1

Mid-Season Grade: C+

26. La Sauce

Mid-Season Record: 1-3-1

Analysis: This is a surprise to me.  I really thought La Sauce were going to walk into Division 3 and take it by storm. The injury to Philippe Trudel seems to have hurt this team a great deal. François Raymond is making more mistakes than we`re used to seeing from him as this gun-slinger has not gotten away with what he’s used to.  La Sauce faces up against offensive powerhouses and strong defensive teams to end the season; they haven’t done well against either this season.  I’m not sure if La Sauce is carbonated but it definitely appears to be flat in the second half of this season.

Key Players: François Raymond, Benjamin Léger, François Deslauriers

Best Acquisition: Cory Kennedy

Predicted Record: 2-7-1

Mid-Season Grade: D

 25. Bengals

Mid-Season Record: 1-4

Analysis: This team is playing so far below expectations, it is difficult to rank them for the season.  With the amount of top-end and higher division talent as well as roster depth, Bengals looked to be one of the front-runners heading in to the season.  However, having lost 3 in a row, with the last one being a blowout to Solide, Bengals seem to be heading in the wrong direction.  Having scored only 19.6 points per game in their first 5, Bengals cannot have expected to have done well in the first half of the season.  Unfortunately, I think it’ll be more of the same as the Bengals schedule does not ease up much this season.

Key Players: Jamil Springer, Jason Prince, Ryan Browne

Best Acquisition: Nareg Yessayan

Predicted Record: 3-7

Mid-Season Grade: D-

24. Les Eudistes

Mid-Season Record: 1-4

Analysis: Les Eudistes are the best worst team in Division 3.  If FPF was played in analytics and on paper Les Eudistes would be the champion each season.  However, to Charles Barkley’s point, the game is played on calculators and paper.  On the filed Les Eudistes just do not show up week in and week out.  They have one of the most versatile and talented group of play makers on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.  Hugo Henderson has all that it takes to be a great quarterback in division 3.  However, Henderson has missed two weeks and this team just has not looked sharp.  Their only win has come against La Sauce who have also struggled this season.

Key Players: Raphael Casey, Marc-Andre Paradis, Hugo Henderson

Best Acquisition: Anh-Tuan Saint-Pierre

Predicted Record: 3-7

Mid-Season Grade: D-

 23. Still C.R.A

Mid-Season Record: 1-4

Analysis: Still CRA or Still Cray, as I prefer to call them are an intriguing team.  They have some established players on their team as well as some hidden talent.  Once such example of hidden talent is in quarterback Ryan Kharouf.  He is as accurate as they come and may have the skills to be a top 5 quarterback in divison 3. On the other side of the ball Stéphane Baganizi has locked down one end of the field. They have a lot of great athletes but have yet to put it together.  They do have some very winnable games before they face off against PWW and VPC to end the season.

Key Players: Ryan Kharouf, Guillaume De Palma, David Shapov

Best Acquisition: n/a

Predicted Record: 3-7

Mid-Season Grade: C-

22. Texas BareManz

Mid-Season Record: 2-3

Analysis: Texas BareManz have to be the most exciting team this season.  They have a lot of playmakers, a ton of team spead and an interesting project qb in Adam Sinagra.  Sinagra has a lot of the tools you want in a developing QB.  He has a great arm, throws a catchable ball and can move in and out of the pocket.  His play-calling and reads lack something to be desired but once he learns what works well in FPFI expect him to be an up and coming force.  Right now they are winning individual matchups, once their play become more conceptual, the athleticism will take over the game but all of the offensive weapons will become available.

Key Players: Jaylan Grandison, Hinsley Adams, Tequan John

Best Acquisition: n/a

Predicted Record: 3-7

Mid-Season Grade: C

20. Los Luchadores

Mid-Season Record: 2-3

Analysis:  Boring is the term that I would use to describe this team.  Los Luchadores seem to be missing some firepower this season and it is bizarre because they have a strong, familiar team.  Yet they have scored more than 3 touchdowns in only one game.  I noticed that they’ve picked up Jordan McLaren.  This would be an interesting pick-up if it`s permanent, if not we will need to see what surprise Rochdi Benabdelkader has stashed in his afro.

Key Players: Edward Shoshan, Vince Nardone, Rochdi Benabdelkader, Adi Sharma

Best Acquisition: Rochdi Benabdelkader

Predicted Record: 4-6

Mid-Season Grade: C

20. Solide

Mid-Season Record: 2-3

Analysis: I had my criticisms about Solide coming into the season.  I felt that Solide lacked the team speed and the cohesiveness to play in games where they did not start with the lead.  What we’ve seen is Solide win games when they have the lead at the half (2-1) and lose games when they are behind at halftime (0-2).  This team needs to possess the ball and be very efficient on offence.  Benny Goodfriend has a great supporting cast led by his star snapper Paul Lapierre and they play a fairly favorable schedule in the second half of the season.  However, I have yet to see Solide be as efficient as they will need to be to win games down the stretch,

Key Players: Benny Goodfriend, Paul Lapierre, Ryan Aridi, Renaldo Jordan

Best Acquisition: n/a

Predicted Record: 4-6

Mid-Season Grade: C-

19. KGP Champs

Mid-Season Record: 2-3

Analysis:  Despite the fact that KGP Champs had started the season on shaky footing, they have started to look more stable (queue the visions of crossing Mordor).   I think the rest of the schedule sets up decently for them however, they may lose a game they are expected to win and as such I believe they will fall just short of the playoffs.  That being said, with Phil Cutler at the helm and with him being featured on defense, KGP has the skill to be able to run the table from here on out. They have lost some talent in the off-season. However, with the core of this team still intact I expected better things coming into this season.

Key Players: Phil Cutler, Sean Brophy, Fred Saleh

Best Acquisition: n/a

Predicted Record: 4-6

Mid-Season Grade: C

18. MetaMayhem

Mid-Season Record: 2-3

Analysis: If there was a team that I expected to be my sneaky pick coming into the second half it would have been MetaMayhem.  However, the injury to quarterback Alex Holowach is somewhat troublesome. He is the heartbeat of this team and if he cannot buy time and extend plays MetaMayhem may just not be as promising as I once expected them to be. Oddly, they have more winnable games in the next couple of weeks than later in the season but I think their wins will come late as The Young Holow’s ankle will begin to heal.

Key Players:  Alex Holowach, Jeff Moscato, Danny D’Amour, James Nowakowski

Best Acquisition: n/a

Predicted Record: C

Mid-Season Grade: 5-5

17. OTF

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis: OTF’s biggest enemy is themselves.  They get on each other for mistakes and they lose focus when things aren’t going well.  I look at OTF as a beautiful women with whom I am just not compatible.  When things are going well I am mesmerized by her beauty.  When they are not going well, she goes from hot to a hot mess. The leaders on this team need to take hold because the season is short and can slip away rather quickly.  Over all I love the talent on this team and I think that they are a matchup nightmare for most teams.

Key Players:  Kendal Mayers, Yafet Meshesha, Yadel Meshesha, Dariuz Golebiowski

Best Acquisition: n/a

Predicted Record: 5-5

Mid-Season Grade: B+

16. Da Regiment

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis:  Coming into their week 5 matchup Da Regiment quarterback Doug McKernan thought I snubbed them after not placing them in my power rankings when they were 3-1. Their loss to a struggling KGP Champs is somewhat troubling and defining all at once.  I think Da Regiment have a ton of talent.  I worry that it will take some time for this offence to get accustomed to the level of play in division 3.  They have some upper division talent such as Tony Lalla and Jeff Miller that should ease the transition.  However, this transition takes place on the field and not on paper. What is interesting is that should this team make a run into the playoffs, they have a lot of underrated talent (the likes of Sami Beg) that will help them upset some higher seeds.

Key Players: Doug McKernan, Jeff Millar, Jourdain Alexis, Tony Lalla

Best Acquisition: n/a

Predicted Record: 5-5

Mid-Season Grade: C+

15. The Brotherhood

Mid-Season Record: 2-3

Analysis:  I had mentioned in earlier podcasts and articles that Brotherhood was the team that I thought would be the struggling team that would turn it around. Given their roster to start the season, I felt that their poor performance was odd.  However, given that they’ve made some midseason additions, it feels like that turnaround is happening now, Quaysie Gordon Maul is the best players that few in the flag community knows about and he has been added to an already star-studded squad. I think this is the sub .500 team that makes it into the playoffs and watch out if they do!

Key Players: Jamal Gittens, Quaysie Gordon Maul, Moy MacDonald, Omar-Smith Jackson

Best Acquisition: Gianni Settino

Predicted Record: 5-5

Mid-Season Grade: C-

14. VPC

Mid-Season Record: 2-3

Analysis:  VPC is somewhat downward trending.  They have lost there last 3 games and while they seem to be winning the games you’d expect the, to they failed to upset Prestige World Wide and lost two coin flip games (games that I thought really could go either way: against Sea Assassins and BearSkins).  Robbie Robinson is probably the best defender in the division and is in the discussion for top quarterback as well.  If anyone could right the ship he can.  More so than Captain Ahab anyway.  Robinson looks more concerned with winning than aquatic revenge.  I think they will have a solid second half.  Look for Air-Robbie to have an impact on both sides of the ball and for them to start winning big games.

Key Players: Rob Robinson, Dan Dick, Brent Gartner

Best Acquisition: Jonathan Lyristis

Predicted Record: 6-4

Mid-Season Grade: D

13. Monstars

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis:  I have been overly critical of Rod Mashtoub.  He is a developing quarterback and he has looked better and better each season at the pivot. Mashtoub has a strong arm and can exploit some matchups down the field.  Moreover, the addition of Isiah Allard was brilliant as he causes matchup problems on both sides of the ball.  Overall Monstars are the team we expected heading into the season.  They play a tough gritty style that serves as somewhat of a double edged sword. They are equipped to win hard fought games but will not win the fight each week. I think they have a tough road ahead but they have the ability and weapons to end the season with a winning record in the second half.

Key Players: Rod Mashtoub, Jad Aridi

Best Acquisition: Isiah Allard

Predicted Record: 6-4

Mid-Season Grade: C+

12. Moose

by Simon Dagenais

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis: Moose are a good team but they aren’t playing all that well, all things considered.  Fred Morissette is a top-tier QB and his offensive leadership guides Moose on a weekly basis. His absence is troublesome and much like past seasons, he has already missed one game this season.  For this reason Moose is a tough bet to place.  The team is a group of very strong players who may or may not be in attendance.  If FPF were high school, Moose would fail and we’d have to call their parents in. Luckily it isn’t.  When complete this is one of the best teams in the division.  However, including the playoffs, this is rarely the case.

Key Players:  Frederic Morissette, Valdy Aceus, Steven Legault, Vincent Lauzon

Best Acquisition: Angelo Garofalo

Predicted Record: 6-4

Mid-Season Grade: C

11. Snatchers

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis:  This team has been the model of inconsistency and inconsistency is the enemy of success.  As is poor credit, laziness, poor work habits, goblins and paper cuts.  This is also a team that has already named 15 players on the roster.  Some midseason acquisitions such as Georges Elie-Voyer, Benoit Fredette and Alex David have been interesting but are not permanent members. This team success is largely based on who shows up on a given week.  Between that and a huge question at Quarterback, I have my doubts.

Best Acquisition: Kevin Lubin, Hugo Lalonde, Gabriel Wiseman, JD Joly

Predicted Record: 6-4

Mid-Season Grade: C

10. Broccaision

Mid-Season Record: 4-1

Analysis:  As I predicted one team to rise to glory, I predict another to fall from grace. Kristian Cerantola has played remarkably efficiently and has Broccaision on a role.  This is a very good team top to bottom but they play in a division with a lot of firepower where the worst teams in the division can beat the strongest and it would not be surprising. I had my doubts about Broccaision last season and I turned out to be completely wrong. The addition of three Daoust brothers makes this team interesting but I still don`t buy it.  What was it that Einstein said about doing the same thing and expecting different results?

Key Players: Kristian Cerantola, Kyle Lebofsky, Devin Daoust

Best Acquisition: Derek Daoust

Predicted Record: 6-4

Mid-Season Grade: A-

9. Mongoose

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis:  Mongoose won a game this season without throwing a touchdown.  This team has also won a playoff game with 5 players.  If there has ever been a franchise in FPF history that just got it done it has been Monsgoose.  The chemistry between Alex Gaudet and his receivers is due, in great part to the seasons that they have played together. He is a smart, capable quarterback who just seems to play bigger in big games. However, they have struggled as they’ve moved into higher divisions in the past and that seems to be why many teams take Mongoose lightly.  However, I see Mongoose going on a tear in the second half of the season and capturing their division title.

Key Players: Céderic Nuckle, Alexandre Gaudet, William Tondreau,

Best Acquisition: Jean-Felix Daloze

Predicted Record: 7-3

Mid-Season Grade: B

8. Sea Assassins

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis:  I`ve made fun of their defense.  Admit it, we`ve all made fun of thei defense.  I`ve also said defense is stupid and Sea Assassins help make my case.  The Sea Assassins are one of these new up and coming teams that score a lot, score quickly and take a lot of chances on defense. Perhaps, it`s not that they don`t play defense well rather, they would rather take cahnces on a big play, and if they allow a score, they know that their offence can sock you in the mouth and take you out with one blow!  For those who haven’t been paying attention, Dan Lazzara has thrown 26 touchdowns and no interceptions half way through the season.  That level of efficiency is inconceivable.

Key Players: Daniel Lazzara, Alex Blanchet, Zach Junieaux

Best Acquisition: Alex Deslauriers

Predicted Record: 7-3

Mid-Season Grade: B+

7. Past Our Prime

Mid-Season Record: 4-1

Analysis:  This is a team that I have been accused of having been highly critical towards. I think it is a good team although, unlike fellow media pundits, I am not willing to crown them based on past success from a time before internet existed. That being said, perhaps I have not given them their due.  They have played well and they are an established group of players.  Experience does well in this league and in that there is an abundance on Past Our Prime.  They have lived up to my challengs thus far but let`s see if they now live up to my praise.

Key Players: Craig O’Brien, Vinny Gualano, Kevin Wilson

Best Acquisition: Darren Bicknell

Predicted Record: 7-3

Mid-Season Grade: A-

6. BD Bandits

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis: For the most part, BD Bandits are what we expected them to be.  They are strong team that wins most of their games on the back of their defense.  They are smart experienced and talented.  I think their week 5 loss to a struggling La Sauce is a slip up rather than a trend.  Interestingly this is a top ranked team with very few stars.  However, Bd Bandits are a squad with no weaknesses.  Often they will lose a key game due to having a bad match-up or an off week.  However, week in and week out they are a tough out.

Key Players: Steve Sanner, Casey Cook, Evan Cook, Nyle Anderson

Best Acquisition: Zack Bzezinski

Predicted Record: 7-3

Mid-Season Grade: C-

5. Prestige World Wide

Mid-Season Record: 3-2

Analysis: I keep trying to rank PWW because of their legacy.  I don`t think legacy will be enough to get them through this year. To be honest, the have a winning record to start the season but they have not looked great in the process.  They fall just short of my top 5 at the mid-point because Prestige World Wide are just look vulnerable.  However, With Alex Lever at the helm and one of, if not the most talented all around receiver in D3 (JS Gradowski), PWW cannot be counted out as an elite team.  I think they will improve as the season goes on and I do think that they will have a decent run in the playoffs.

Key Players: Alex Lever, Marc-André Paquin, Jean Sebastien Gradowski

Predicted Record: 7-3

Best Acquisition: Pierre-Luc Ouimet

Mid-Season Grade: C-

4. Predators

Mid-Season Record: 4-0-1

Analysis: The scary thing about Predators is that they’ve made it to 4-0-1 and they’ve done so by winning ugly games.  This team is stacked with a lot of talent that is somewhat unknown in Division 3.  There are a lot of talented players on this roster who have made noise in divisions 4 and 5 and now have risen to the challenge by competing in Division 3 (Jacob Bernett, Jason Rossie, etc.)  This is a team that will be battle tested for the playoffs and will start to produce at the level that is necessary to take them seriously as a top teir contender.

Key Players: James Floreani, Simon Bosquet Beaudin, Kenton Lowe, Marc-Andre Lapointe

Best Acquisition: Nicholas Gendron Valleé

Predicted Record: 7-2-1

Mid-Season Grade: B-

3. Les Buddays

Mid-Season Record: 4-1

Analysis: Les Buddays can beat anyone on any given week.  Their only loss came against the undefeated BearSkins, it was by less than a score and I have trouble seeing any team beating Les Buddays twice in a season.  They made a change at quarterback and brought in Frédéric Dupuis. I thought this team would be a little slow out of the gate as they adjusted to their new quarterback but that has not been the case.  Les Buddays have exploded onto the scene and have looked amazing.  They are a versatile team and can beat you in many different ways.  I’m excited to see how this ride ends for the Black and Blue.

Key Players: Guillaume Pacquette, Alex Gauthier, Jason Charbonneau

Best Acquisition: Frédéric Dupuis

Predicted Record: 8-2

Mid-Season Grade: A

2. BearSkins

Mid-Season Record: 5-0

Analysis: The BearSkins have one of the best collections of talent I have ever seen in Division 3.  Jacob Peterson was a huge addition as a receiver as well as on defenses.  When he rushes, his ability to cut on a dime has had quarterbacks panicking and tossing up ducks to two of the most skilled safeties in the division (Aleksander Papich and Jean-Michel Laplante).  From top to bottome, this is one of the best teams I`ve ever seen put together.  Provided that quarterback Neil Etinson can keep playing at the level he has been all season, I see no reason why the BearSkins can’t take home an FPF championship.

Key Players: Jacob Peterson, Marco Bertoldi, Aleksander Papich

Best Acquisition: Jean-Michel Laplante

Predicted Record: 9-1

Mid-Season Grade: A

1. Wildboys

Mid-Season Record: 5-0

Analysis:  The Wild Boys gave it a shot in division 2 last year and while it may have been just the tip they decided to head back to Div3 to cut their teeth a little more.  Dental bills notwithstanding Wildboys are a good team and deserving of the top spot. They feature transit quarterback Mathieu Rene and they have a group of very talented, explosive receivers (most of whom are averaging over 11 yards per catch). Moreover having played a very difficult schedule to start the season and having no more than 1-2 challenging matchup ahead, I expect Wild Boys to run the table and go 10-0.  The playoffs are a different world onto their own however, for the duration of the season I see the Wold Boys dominating the field.

Key Players: Mathieu Rene, Tafari Williams, Rashawn Perry, Ryan Perry

Best Acquisition: Dean Demetriou

Predicted Record: 10-0

Mid-Season Grade: A-

Hungover Visions of the World of Tomorrow

Half-way through the season and I have finally overtaken the evil Mat Domon in our game of picks.  Last week I said there would be some upsets and that helped me pick an 8-6 record whereas Mat Domon’s favorites only strategy did not pay off leading him to a weekly record of 4-10.  This week we face off on the page as well as on the gridiron.  I am positive, given the level of competition, I will be victorious in both conquests.  Remember you can heckle Mat Domon to quit while he’s ahead by tweeting him @MathieuDomonFPF.
