Peeze’s Playbook (Div E) – Week 7

Dear Mama,

I hope you are well.  In the last letter you asked about the  company and I must say it’s thriving.  Plumbing is a great profession because there is always work.  You’d be surprised what people flush down the toilet these days. Just yesterday, I was on a job site and, right at the end of this long green pipe was a giant Venus Flytrap.  It was truly shocking.

Mario is doing well, although he is still quite heavy and I worry about his health.  What’s worse is that he seems to be allergic to those mushrooms he keeps eating.  I swear to you, each one he eats seems to have him bloated and he grows to twice his size!  His wife, the ‘Princess’ Peach is also doing fairly well. However, she always seems to be getting herself trapped and my lovely brother always has to jump through rings of fire and crawl through dungeons for her.

My love life is stagnant as always.  I always feel like the second player who only gets noticed when Mario is occupied with someone else.   Sometimes I feel like the green shirt, overalls and a moustache may be a dated look button most days I feel like it’s a classic look. I’m hoping that one day I will have my own life and feel like I am living in my own world.  Until then I’m still living, day in, day out.

Your son,

Luigi

(The Green Mario…for the record, I hate when you call me that)

Minge: Too Much for Jean Guy to Handle

Prior to this past his game against the Jean Guy, the Minge quarterback Jeff Rosenblatt proclaimed that the media hadn’t covered the Minge nearly enough.  I explained that it was personal and it was because he was not a likeable individual.  Clearly, I meant this in jest because if you’ve met “Rose” you’d see that he is as likeable as it gets.  That being said we probably haven’t covered the Minge enough this season.  Rosenblatt has looked like Rosenbeast and this past week was no exception. He threw for 244 yards and 7 touchdowns. Yoni Lehrer and Corey Pecker caught 2 a piece while Matt Young added three touchdowns to his season total. Lehrer in fact made his case for 2 way player of the year in this game as he also added an interception on the other side of the ball.

Jean Guy finally had a game where they put up points.  Jean Christophe Chartrand threw for 2 touchdowns, ran in another two and watched from a distance as Simon Laporte scored on a 40 yard run.  In fact Jean Guy also looked good in the second half of the game.  Unfortunately, going into the half with a 25-6 deficit made a comeback very difficult to accomplish. Interestingly, it seems as though Jean Guy who are known for playing in tightly contested defensive battles got caught up in a shoot out and they could not keep up.  Jean Guy loses this one 43-30 against the Minge.

New World Orange

When Orange Crush showed up at the field without Jonathan Chevalier it seemed as though they were in for a long game.  However, when his replacement is another Mongoose alum by the name of Cedric Nuckle, there is little to worry about. Cedrick “Brass” Nuckle is one of the best two way athletes ranging from division E-C.  He is the kind of player who can take over a game on his own (believe me he’s done it against my teams on two occaisions).  This was yet another day at the office for Nuckle who caught 10 passes for 4 touchdowns and intercepted 2 passes where one of which was for a Pick 6. Quarterback Yannick Doston also helped out his own cause when he intercepted a pass for a touchdown as well.

This 50-25 loss may in fact be the writing on the wall for n.W.o.  They have stuck by their read-option, Wildcat-esque offense but the issue appears to be that when Michael Sanchez struggles to throw the ball.  The reality is that the game is set up to be a passing league.  While it is impressive that Sanchez, Pietro Mignacca and Stephen Tirelli have combined for 278 yards rushing on the season it has only led to one touchdown.  In the games that n.W.o. has lost Sanchez completed less than 10 passes and he did not look very effective when moving the ball.  While it is understandable that you will

Old Guns Misfire

This is the kind of game that got ugly toward the end.  It was somewhat chirpy from start to finish and as tensions rose, the referees put a stop to the game as is got out of hand.  Myles Keiller was hit from behind after a play and in order to ensure player’s safety the referees ended the game.  This is the exact reason that we have such a rule in place.  The game itself got off to an uneven start as Old Guns fell behind early. Vince Pisano struggled to move the ball and the Old Guns, whom I’ve criticized for their inconsistent play, looked stagnant this week.  The one bright spot truly was Jean-Benoit Bourassa who caught 2 touchdown passes in this game. On defense Alexandre Gaudet recorded an interception for a touchdown while David Trivisonno looked to recapture some of the magic that he had last season as he ended the game with 2 sacks.

My criticism of TDs and Beer is that they simply haven’t scored enough to be considered as one the division’s top teams. Brad Evans seemed to have taken this to heart as he moved the ball well and threw 5 touchdowns for the first time this season.  Two-way player of the year candidate, Isaiah Allard caught 3 touchdowns and his size and physical style of play is earning him the reputation of being a great red zone threat.  Brandon Keiller and Brad Demers also added touchdowns as TDs and Beer beat Old Guns by a score of 36-18

5 plays Till Half Time

Each week, the Eagle at Master Control sends me 5 quick fire questions that I try to answer without hesitation.  Each week, he misses his deadline.  Please kindly remind him by tweeting him @EagleFPF.

Eagle: Conference A and Conference B standings are pretty much identical in terms of records. Are you surprised?

Peeze: I keep saying it; while the cap system isn’t perfect but it’s good. When you examine it player for player there will be some inconsistencies, however, when looking across teams and across divisions we see a lot of parity.  On any given week, any team can beat any other.  This is exactly what the goal was!

Eagle: Cream Team has allowed only 64 points against in 6 games. Is their defense really that good?

Peeze: Well they do have 26 interceptions (4 for touchdowns) and 14 sacks.  On the surface, the easy answer is yes. However, Cream Team score a lot of points and they ave not trailed going into the half in any game this season.  This puts a lot of pressure for their opposition to air out the ball.  In a division with so many quarterbacks learning the position, we see them panic and chuck the ball into coverage because they are threatened by such a quick strike offense.

Eagle: Gingers have scored only 94 points for in 6 games. Is their offense really that bad?

Peeze: Unfortunately it is.  I was on their sideline warming up for my own game the earlier in the season and I heard a conversation about how slants were open.  While this sounds like someone played Madden before, football of any variety (touch, tackle, flag) is more complex than that.  What’s open depends on coverage as well as the quarterbacks play calling and route concepts.  The seem to be mentored by memebers of Two and a Half Dans whose awkward offense has struck lightening in a bottle.  That being said Steven McFee is not Joey Taylor and he needs to come into his own.

Eagle- Of the top teams, do you see the veteran players shining, or are there new stars that are up and coming?

Peeze: For the most part I would say so.  Jeff Rosenblatt and Jarred Humphrey are experienced quarterbacks and seem to be in a two horse race for QB of the year.  Mike Addona leads the league in receptions, Yoni Lehrer leads in receiving touchdowns, Alex Grace leads in interceptions and Isaiah Allard leads in sacks.  All of the aforementioned players have at least one season under their belts.  However, I think we are seeing a lot of new players become solid role players who will emerge as stars in future seasons.

Eagle: Tell us about your favorite Road Show moment.

Peeze: The road show is the greatest spectacle in the entire world of recreational sports.  At the FPF Finals we do a live broadcast, interviews, a trophy presentation; it really is a magical experience.  So many moments come to mind.  Playing in the finals, seeing Patrick Jerome win a game with a pick two on a convert and finally the year all the equipment we rented failed us and cost the league a fortune.  However I would have to say that my favourite moment, every season is watching the winning team hoist the trophy above their heads.  It may sound cheesy but it is the coolest experience to see the utmost joy on the faces of the winning team.

Reflections, Rants and Ravings:

  • Pietro Mignacca came off the field during a game where n.W.o was losing and within reach of coming back to help a player from the opposing team (DX) who was injured. I don’t care that it happened during week 7.  I don’t care what his stats are, I am voting for him for the all-star game.
  • Simon Laporte of Jean Guy has been, ostensibly, suspended for the season. I don’t want to publicize what he did but I just want to applaud the league for their quick action.
  • I have ordered the Suarez “Biting” bottle opener.  I can’t wait for it to arrive.
  • With Hangar Crossfit’s win, there are no more winless teams.
  • I had 81.3% completion percentage in week 6 and I didn’T even lead the league.  Damn you Rosenbeast!
  • The Mongoose players are flooding div.E.  If they were all available, why didn’t they make a team?
  • The intro was Super Mario themed.  If you couldn’t figure it out, I worry about you as men.

Power Rankings

  1.  Cream Team (5-1)-  They are the best team and theyre dominant on both sides of the ball.  They continue to show it week in and week out.
  2. DG Goons (5-1)-  Last week I believed that they wouldstruggle in the latter half of the season.  On this week’s Flag Plus Bromance, Terry Tam agreed with me.  After their first loss, they hope to make it the exception rather than the rule.
  3.  DX (5-1)- Bird is no longer the word.  The word is defense and these boys have been putting on a clinic.  I like this team a lot and it seems as though the bigger the game, the better they look.  They aren’t built to blow you out but they are built to make your life miserable if they have a lead.
  4. The Minge (5-1)-The Minge look great week in and week out.  The second half of their schedule does look a little tougher.  It will be interesting to see if they can keep piling on the wins facing LPH and DG Goons on back-to-back weeks.
  5. TDs and Beer (4-2)-They’re stile is effective and perhaps a little boring but they showed me something this week.  They showed me that their offense can put up enough point to secure a win against a tough opponent.  They keep doing that and the sky is the limit.  Provided tha jet packs become more affordable.
  6. Los Pollos Hermanos (4-2)- I like chicken.  For this reason I may have overvalued this team.  After having the displeasure of playing Cream Team.  They now are set to face of against the Minge and the DG Goons in the next two weeks.  This will be the true barometer of how good this team really is.
  7. Alcohol of Fame (3-3)- They’re defense struck again but this isn’t a sustainable for the rest of the season.  They will need to become a better offensive unit or they can begin to see the season slip away from them. While it is nice to get 2 pick-6’s from Bryden Streeter you can’t count on this each week.
  8. The Pack (3-3)- The Pack have gotten back to their winning ways.  While it wasn’t their normal roster that got them the win this week, this may just be enough to kick-start the team once again.

Other Teams Receiving Votes:

This week I asked my mother for her opinion on which teams she would vote on as potentially cracking the power rankings.  She told me that I was wasting my life; I felt horrible and as such my ballots were fairly soaked with tears. This week I focused more on teams that were either well positioned or on the rise

-Wax On, Wax Off (3-3)-  This team is way too talented to be stuck with a .500 record at this point.  However, they lost to Cream Team (probably the best team in the division) 2 weeks ago and against Killuminati (a team that they simply don’t match up well against).  I think they can turn it around but the turnaround needs to happen now!

-Killuminati (2-4)Having won their last two in a row, Killuminati is starting to show some life.  Since the addition of Anthony Addona, this team looks ready to string some wins together.

Orange Crush (2-4)- If the addition of Cedrick Nuckle  is permanent then this team becomes an instant contender. Nuckle is probably the best overall player from division E-C.

Hung-over Visions of the World of Tomorrow

So here’s the skinny: I fell behind the other guys early and I’ve had to take some risks.  They haven’t panned out so far but it does have me cheering for the underdog which is my favorite kind of canine. We say it all the time, the more picks I get wrong the happier I am because it means that I’m covering an unpredictable division.  That being said, I’m happy enough, come on guys win some games!
