Peeze’s Playbook – Week 7

Paolo Della Rocca

For those who have been following me from the get go, you’ll know that I am an avid fisherman.  I enjoy fishing because it helps clear my mind.  I equate it with the feeling of seeing the ball leave the quarterback’s hand.  It floats through the air and as it rotates in (hopefully) a perfect spiral, time seems to slow down.  Not a sound can be heard no other player can be seen; it is a moment of serenity.  In your mind all you can think is: ‘MINE!’

When the ball touches your fingers it is a moment of absolute catharsis.  It is entirely similar to casting into a completely unperturbed mirrored surface of the lake, then leaning back and waiting for the fish to strike.  The only difference of course being that they are completely dissimilar to any other living human.

It’s my article, I will decide if my comparisons are apt!

Thursday’s Recap

Les Affreux Need No Pardon

Les Affreux beat Pardon my Swag by a score of 26-18 and may have overcome their most difficult challenge on their way toward a potential perfect season.  Trailing at the half, a less experienced, less cohesive team may have crumbled.  This would not be the case for Les Affreux as the Red Menace looked like a new team after the half.  Getting it done with their defense as well as their offense, the key for this one was that they only allowed 6 second half points.  Martin Jackson intercepted Kevin Krupa twice and Yannick Clement made 6 tackles as the typically rugged Affreux defense did not disappoint.

Pardon My Swag has had a rough season but they have looked better in recent weeks.  This loss halts their winning streak at two games.  Throughout the season, they have lost many close games but this is truly the mark of a developing team.  The experience they have gathered thus far will help them should they keep their core in tact for future seasons.  The receiving tandem of Scott Novio and Karl Lavallee has been devastating and this week was no exception.  They combined for 11 catches 151 yards and 2 touchdowns in a losing effort.

Tyrants have no Antidote for Black Mamba’s Venom

The Tyrants are a fun team to watch because they are remarkably competitive and gritty.  Even though their record is far from stellar, they make it a point to compete game in and game out.  The one concern for me is that while they have a lot of talent, they do not always use their personnel as effectively as they should. I was happy to see Andre Fredrick line up on the offensive side of the ball as he caught 6 passes for 91 yards and scored twice.  GM Koletheras added two sacks on the defensive side of the ball leads all defenders in that category heading in to Sunday.  All these positives definitely ease the sting of defeat.

Jerson Previllon had his best game this season.  He threw 4 touchdowns and was not intercepted once.  Mendy Cardichon was his normal Superman self, he caught 2 touchdowns, intercepted the ball twice and even threw a 22 yard pass.  Black Mambas have a lot of skill.  When they come out and play like this one they are a tough team to beat.  There is a slim chance to make the playoffs but if they don’t they will definitely play the spoilers to many other teams.  For the meantime they can enjoy the 38-22 victory.

5 Plays ‘till Halftime

With the Eagle on Master Control vacationing in Europe (how does he even get vacation time?) our new, temporary producer, Chapman (The Eternal Hunger at Master Control) has prepared 5 questions in his stead.  You will notice that while the grammar is better, it lacks the flair of the Eagle’s questions.

  1. 1.   How many ties will it take for Lockdown to make the playoffs?

Hopefully three!  I am tired of seeing them pile-up the T’s. However, because I believe it will take 6 wins to make the playoffs (thus 12 points), Lockdown can, in theory tie-out and make the playoffs.  If this happens I am unfriending them all on Facebook!

  1. 2.   Big Blue Wrecking Crew played with only 5 players because X-Men only had 5 players.  Was this the right thing to do?

Not a chance! Your responsibility is to your own team.  You should take every opportunity afforded to you.  If they have a guy who can’t cover anyone don’t you pick on that DB?  I can’t imagine a quarterback holding back because he feels bad about the other guy.

BBWC brought their team.  It is not their responsibility to ensure that the other team will be able to compete. Big Blue brought their boys to the yard.  It was their opportunity to show that their milkshake was in fact superior.

  1. 3.   Playground played two games this season with illegal rosters.  What can the league do to make the roster exemption rules clearer to captains?

To be honest I have to side with the league on this one.  Everyone who has read my articles for the past couple of seasons and listened to Calling the Audible will know that I don’t always agree with league decisions or their stance on some issues.  As a member of the league’s fourth estate, I feel like it is my responsibility to look at the comings and goings of the league with a critical eye.

However, in this case, the roster limitations are posted on the site, they were posted on the Facebook group at the beginning of the season and prior to the winter season there is a Captain’s meeting where we discuss these issues and more.  In the end it is the captain’s responsibility to know what the rules are and convey them to the rest of the team.  Also, league officials are always at the field and many media members, such as myself, are visible at the fields, available on Facebook, by email and on Twitter.  If your not sure, just ask me, I’ll do my best to help.

  1. 4.   The Black Mambas won their first game.  Which winless team will be next to pick up heir first win?

Big Blue Wrecking Crew has the toughest remaining schedule (and only have three games remaining).  I do like their chances in week 10 against a struggling Park X Streets. The Warriors have 4 remaining games and one of them against, the now one win, Black Mambas.  I prefer the personnel on the Mambas so I don’t think it is in the cards for the Warriors.  The Speed Demons showed that they could run with some very good teams when they tied Lockdown.  They play against two struggling teams in the Vikings and the Ghosts.  Perhaps I am being a little present-minded but I’m going to settle on Speed Demons to be the next winless team to get a victory.

  1. 5.   Why are bananas yellow?

Ok, so Chapman’s new…he’ll get it eventually.

Tuesday’s Headlines Today

  • Blue Mountain Too High a Climb

The Warriors tied a very tough Project Mayhem team.  That being said the BMS defense is a much more difficult challenge.  They have a core of All-Canadian linebackers from Les Carabins and scoring against them is always difficult.  I think we will see Rick Cummins struggle nd we will see Blue Mountain State move to 7-0.

  • Jaggerbombs Littered Across Le Zoo

Le Zoo are a strong team and I’ve been hyping up the Frank Kaye/St-Amand connection all season.  However, I think they lack the overall firepower to go toe to toe with an offensive powerhouse like Jaggerbomb.  However, I think that their slow methodical style will keep them in the game.  Unfortunately they will have to play a perfect game in order to beat Jaggerbomb and I don’t forsee that happening today.

  • Manning Leads Charge Against Vikings

Limetime is coming off a rough loss against Checkmate where both teams talked all game long; it got loud, it got frustrating for Limetime.  They are going to want to come out to make a statement against te Vikings.  I’ve said for the better part of two seasons that Limetime shines against struggling teams.  I do not think this wil be the exception to the rule.

Going for 1/Going for 2

Late in the season I should be more cautious.  However, I’m a really weird guy so I’m going for two.

My first subject is the Game of The Week.  I’m thrilled that the suits at FPF decided to bring it back.  It is fun, it engages our community and people really seem to like it.  When I heard the #NoRegard’s Lance Daniel was sub-contracted to film/edit/produce Game of the Week I had my reservations.  I thought that they would not be able to detach themselves from the product.  However, to the #NoRegard crew’s credit, they have put together a very professional creation.  I’m happy GOTW has returned and it is now better than ever.

The next thing that I wanted to cover was on the subject of division dodging.  It’s played out and I’ve covered it already.  I’m taking somewhat of a different angle.  I want to talk about complainers.  The dudes who go up on the Facebook wall and complain about the ‘division dodgers’ that they just lost to.  In the end you can’t change the rosters you are facing or the roster exemptions in the league.  To be honest this is the best run, most competitive league in the city. FPF isn’t perfect but it’s damn close.

Someone mentioned on the Facebook wall that a lot of the reason ‘division dodging’ conversations come up because of the media component.  The reason being that players want to hear their names called on the podcast, se their names in print or brag to their friends about their stats.  I agree with this whole-heartedly and I’m happy to be part of the chaos.

Weekend Wrap-up

I am currently reporting from the Chalet in St.Hippolyte where I am ensuring that I party just as hard for Canada Day weekend as I did for St.Jean.  As you can tell I still have access to the internet so please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or on Twitter @PeezeFPF.

The Division D edition of ‘Calling the Audible’  welcomes a new interim producer in to the studio. Chapman ‘The Eternal Hunger at Master Control’ will join Terry Tam (@TerryTamFPF) and I (@PeezeFPF) as we break down the week’s worth of action and potentially have a poutine eating contest between our interim producer and the Tam-bourine man. Join in on the fun by subscribing via iTunes or at http://fpf.podomatic.com.  Have fun; see you at the fields, and thank you for letting me be myself.
