My thoughts on R.Kelly, Comedic Lyrics and Cold Weather
Peeze’s Playbook
Week 2
Discussions of R.Kelly have saturated media of all sources. I always find it interesting when people either defend heinous acts or feel the need to disassociate from someone’s work when they learn that they have done things that are morally despicable. An artist, for example, was never one’s friend or confidant. Their art may be great while the producer of said content may be a monster.
What’s interesting about the case of R.Kelly is that this isn’t news. I’ve been reading about it for close to two years. Those who defend him point to two bizarre things. Firstly they talk about how there are instances where the women involved do not seem inclined to leave and donate appear to be in clear and present danger. Well, there is evidence that they are, including a video tape of R.Kelly being physically abusive at a night club. Secondly, people who make this defence are clearly naive to the awful power dynamic in abusive relationships. There are cases where women have stayed with men for years despite being subject to physical, verbal and sexual torment.
The next and more bizarre turn for those defending R.Kelly is the move where they point to the fact that journalist Touré Neblett was in turn accused of sexual impropriety. This is somehow viewed as redemption to the ardent supporters. What is strange is that while the horrific allegations against R.Kelly donut diminish his art, the journalist involved may also be right in his findings despite he himself being someone who conducted himself in a way that is inappropriate or illegal. While the documentary Surviving R. Kelly brought national attention to a story that needed to be examined and investigated, it is strange how people react emotionally to subjects that are plain and logical. In any case, lets get into some flag football.
Global Swarming
Snapping is a position we all take for granted. Yes, being a snapper for a long time in this league I may be a touch biased. However Sharknado snapper Etienne Lopez had a tough game as many of his snaps were rolled to the quarterback or air mailed above his head. Sebastien Blanchette did what he could given the situation which had him struggling for large portions of the game but he accounted for only one score (on a touchdown pass to Robert Paparo).
While 7th Rounders are new to FPF they have a lot of credentials in MFL. Considering the success we’ve seen in the low divisions by former MFL teams it appeared as though they struggled to adapt despite their 19-13 win over Sharknado. An example of this is that only three players had receptions and only 7 passes were completed by 7th Rounders all game. Terry Babalis seems to have adapted well as he recorded 3 sacks in his FPF debut. These teams have a lot of work to do but treated us to a close, yet sloppy game in week 1.
Revenge SZN
Ok so it’s likely not revenge as the Vultures likely needed to make some moves due to some cap hits to remain in division 6. Either way Vulture alums Kevin Donnet and Andel Thomas-Gordon faced off against their former teammates in week 1. Donnet is known a talented receiver and looked solid behind centre. Aaron Butler proved to be the team’s top threat recording two touchdowns before Hurricane SZN would suffer an eventual 25-20 loss.
For the Vultures, the game went as good as they could have expected. Dual threat QB Owen Bujarski bought time in the pocket and added 51 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown in a fairly close game. Interceptions by Phillip Roberts and Chaz Kidder-Alexander were the difference as the extra turnover allowed for the Vultures to come out on top in the opening week.
Monster’s Ball
Perhaps the strangest game of the week in FPF. Holding Pension Plan to 2 points is a arity given the experience and talent on that team. Even stranger was the blow up by quarterback Vince Pisano toward an official. Pension Plan were not happy with the refereeing in this game and they let the referees know. That said, losing one’s temper in a game that has already been decided will have little impact on the game short of the two OC’s earned by Pisano for this incident. Anthony Siggia and Junior Spera proved to be the most reliable target in this game (as is predictable) but neither player was able to get into the endzone.
The herculean effort by Patrick Jazon was the reason the score was as lopsided as it was. He is insanely quick and his height helps him take away entire passing lanes. He recorded two sacks and an interception as well. Sheldon Dumeignil was added to the team as the new quarterback to help an offense that struggled last season. He earned a win in his first game but only complete 4 passes in the 19-2 win over Pension Plan. I hope to see Green Monster’s offense improve but either way, their defense appears to be in midseason form.
DGC Devour Chocolate Barracudas
I have had high hopes for DGC all preseason. So far it appears my faith has been rewarded. In the opening game of the season, Sean Martin was not entirely efficient as he completed less than half of his passes but he kept a clean sheet as he recorded 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Speedster Andrew Di Mele was the beneficiary of two of those touchowns. Foti Evangelista and Nick Kypriotis added scores as well in a 30-6 romp of the Chocolate Barrcudas.
For the Chocolate Barracudas, I figured Lusson Pierre would be the quarterback of the team. He was definitely the more proficient quarterback for the Barracudas as James Campeau completed only 1 of his 13 attempts in this game. Of the three receivers who caught passes for the Barracudas only Matthew Fernandes caught more than 1 and he recorded the team’s only score. This is the developmental division and while DGC seems more well-formed Chocolate Barracudas seem to need a lot of work.
Potatoes Unsoiled by Seamen
Samuel Lamothe, QB of the Potatoes, was huge question mark heading into the season for me. Last time around he often panicked if defenses took away his first read and would throw the ball downfield into coverage in those cases. He also relied too heavily on JJ Cosentini (who did have two touchdowns in the season opener this past week). In the season opener we also so the rise of a potential threat in Chris Guerra who also caught a pair of touchdowns in the 39-6 win.
South Shore Seamen struggled in their first outing of the season. Starting Quarterback Kyle Duclos was replaced after recording a stat line of 5/15 for 27 yards and 2 interceptions. The game was out of hand early and luckily for SSS they were able to muster a single score in the second half to make the game respectable. They have a lot to learn and this season may in fact, be dedicated to just that.
Rants, Ravings and Reflections
- January is now known as the Month Netflix decides we don’t ever need to stop watching TV. So much new content added all at once, so little time.
- Fat Diablos got lucky earning a victory by forfeit. They didn’t look great in week 1.
- Los Siete Amigos adding Ben Reid at quarterback is a huge move.
- Cody Parkey it’s been a week. Don’t worry, no one like Chicago fans either.
- I thought Gabriel Bardetti would be an impact player for Dirty Landry. In his first game he already caught a pass for a touchdown.
- Azeem Bailey’s 2 touchdowns for Rosedale Renovations is about what we expected from this talented player on opening weekend.
- The “two hour rule” is very troublesome for those who believe in basic human rights.
- The virtually all-new Real Bros of Simi Valley were impressive in week 1. They held first time quarterback Ryan Eichler to 3 completions.
- Four players had rushing attempts for Replacements. That’s the first time I’ve seen that.
- A new study revealed that Quebec residents are the most taxed world-wide. This surprises no one.
- Sean Yoffe of TBA recorded his first three interceptions of the season and jumps to the division lead.
- Six blowouts in division 6D in week 1. More than we would have liked but to be expected until teams learn the game.
- Cyntoia Brown being granted Clemency and the public’s current interest in R.Kelly’s sexual deviance and alleged crimes show the power and reach of media. It also frightens me that few people cared for as long as these situations were occurring.
- Luckily Les Casses seem to be a group of Samuel Caron’s friends and not a band of division dodgers slumming it in div 6.
- Just when I thought Terry Babalis had an impressive day with his 3 sacks, Dawg Pound’s Nicolas Corbo recorded 5 sacks in a game.
- Ketchup, we’re done.
- Massimo Cicchini may be the fastest quarterback in the division but watching Zone 6 Baller’s Jeansley Vallbonard run with the ball is a site to behold.
- 30…F@#% Off
- Members of BDR and Brewers may have been subject to a breathalyzer simply for their team name with the new laws that have come into effect.
- NY Jets hire Adam Gase; I hope your fans enjoy watching screen passes and draw plays.
Power Rankings
Each week Marc-Andre Deslauniers and I will list our elite 8. This will serve as our power rankings for the season. For our weekly picks please consult his article that will include his picks and mine.
Division 6
- Green Monster (1-0): Green Monster’s defense is legit! Vince Pisano is a very good quarterback and holding him to no touchdowns in a full game is insane. Patrick Jazon is an elite rusher and his ability to take away passing lanes while getting to the QB is something that will prove very disruptive.
- Dawg Pound (1-0): Shayne Feinberg showed rust and growth in one game. They were down early to Unknown Talent but his defense gave him a fighting chance and he led Dawg Pound to a second half where they outscored their opponent 18-6.
- Warriors (1-0): A shootout between two of the top teams in the division saw the Warriors fall behind with 2 minutes left, regain the lead with three plays left and deflag a receiver on a Hail Mary at the one yard line. This type of resilience is exactly what makes them so dangerous.
- NWO (1-0): NWO’s game script all season will be to keep scores low and for Michael Sanchez to limit mistakes. He threw one interception but other than that played a great game. JS Collin caught a touchdown in his first game in an NWO uniform.
- Average Joe’s (1-0): They beat another team that has also moved up from the developmental division. However, they did so in impressive fashion and Steve Besner’s 3 catch/3 touchdown performance was huge!
- Vick in a Box (1-0): Three corrections from my last article. Matthew Pisaturo is throwing for VIB. Jordan McInnis plays for this team and he’s more than just a capable replacement for Max Burah. Also, Vick in a Box are good!
- Unknown Talent (0-1): Their loss was a surprise and likely the biggest upset of the opening week. However, they lost a game by two points on the opening week of the season. Alessandro Barazzoni did intercept two passes but he threw just as many on offense. I expect higher efficiency moving forward.
- Channel 4 News Team (1-0): C4NT’s week 1 win was impressive. They allowed only 8 completions and Noah Groper was virtually unguardable in his 6 catch, 71yard and 2 touchdown performance.
Division 6D
- Fightin’ Tigers (1-0): Fightin’ Tigers survived 3 Seth Galina interceptions and won 18-6. If they can win with everything going wrong there’s no telling what they can do once they start clicking.
- Bud Knights (1-0): A shutout isn’t easy to achieve in FPF, shutting out a team of ringers is even more impressive. 1-0 Dilly Dilly.
- Llamas Pyjamas (1-0): Llamas Pyjamas beat up on a new Lionheart team. The Fall cup experience has helped them and they looked vastly improved from their 2018 debut.
- Los Siete Amigos (1-0): The eight amigo is the new qb acquisition of Benjamin Reid. He will do will playing in division 6D. Nothing could stop him from getting the ball to Tristan Marois in this game as the two connected for 3 touchdowns.
- DGC (1-0): I had a feeling that this season would be a cornerstone for DGC. Foti Evangelista returning gives them an experienced high division player and Sean Martin is learning quickly. Unrelated, the 90’s assed logo for Touchstone Pictures is now firmly stuck in my mind.
- Trailer Park Boys (1-0): Making everyone from Lahey to J-ROC proud, Trailer Park Boys have come a long way from the disorganized rookies we saw in the fall cup. They “Cold stole a diamond ring to make my girl my wife, wife… That’s Trailer Park Life”
- Gold Rush (1-0): While not entirely convinced, I do like some of the talent on this team. Oliver Quon would be best served to make fast friends with Rocco Christiano. If he learns how to use him, Christiano will be unstoppable in this division.
- Potatoes (1-0): Gotta give them their due, I didn’t think a ton about this team in the preseason but a resounding 39-6 win caught my attention. A couple of impressive wins by these guys will have them charging up the power rankings.
