Los Guapos take top spot in Elite 8
Ladies and gentlemen, FPF players of all ages, welcome to Week 9. The Division E playoff race is heating up, and last week’s games did nothing to alleviate the tension and pressure.
The two hottest teams in Div. E the Looney Goons and #Baton continued their winning ways, as they pulled off upsets and knocked off no name@ and the Bloodmachines respectively.
The wins were huge for both teams. For the Looney Goons as I mentioned article, the win pushes them further up the standings in Conference A. The W combined with the Tigers 20-13 loss to the Falcons last Sunday night, has seen LG leap over the dirty birds and are now in sole possession of the 7th seed.
For #Baton the transition from a hopeless team to a playoff one has been remarkable. After getting points in their two previous games, they came into Sunday night’s game against the Bloodmachines slight underdogs with a lot of momentum, who were 1 point out of the playoffs. As expected, they rode the hot hand of Quarterback Jason Dupuis and pulled off minor upset. Because of the win, they not sit in 7th place in the Conference B, 1 point behind JeanGuy for the 6th spot. Guess which two teams square off Monday night?
Speaking of JeanGuy, they deserve some credit after getting a huge win over Royalty. The two points was huge for JG. Although they struggled offensively in the first half, they got a strong second half out of QB Emile Lamy who threw 3 touchdown passes to three different WRs to help his team get the victory. Sack master Simon Laporte was his usual dominant self as he picked up 4 sacks (tied with the Redmen’s Angelo Marotta for the weekly lead) adding to his Div. E high of 17.
How much do you want to bet that Laporte reaches the 25 sack mark by the end of the regular season? He has two more games to get 8 sacks. I think that he does it. Any takers?
High 5
#Baton and Looney Goons – The phrase better late than never comes to mind. With their solid play, and the points that both teams have picked up recently, each club has shook up the playoff race. Let’s see how much more noise these squads can make with two games remaining in the regular season.
Jordan Robert Chartrand (Fuzzy-Kittens) – The Fuzzy Kittens’ QB saved his best performance for the best time of the season as he led his team to a massive 37-31 upset win over One Man Show. Chartrand who had only thrown 4 TD passes twice in the season, nearly doubled that total this past Monday night as he threw 6. What makes his performance even more impressive is that he did it against a defense that has playmakers like Dangerous Danny D’Amour, Alex Grey, Justin Santillo, ands a decent rusher in Justin Matteo. The victory also helped the Fuzzy Kittens stay in the playoff race in Conference A.
Étienne Guilmain (Flight of the Conchords) – The FOTC QB (That’s a lot of abbreviations…taloa) Had a fantastic outing Monday night versus Been There Done That as he went 16 of 28 for 178 yards and 4 TDs through the air. He also added 58 yards on 5 rushes and 2 TDs on the ground. The win combined with the Bloodmachines aforementioned loss catapulted FOTC into 1st place in Conference B.
Jason Previllon (#Baton) – Has anyone been happier with the QB switch for #Baton than Previllon? Throughout the first four weeks of the season, before the switch was made, Previllon had a total of 3 catches for 24 yards. Since the team made a change at the position to Loic Savoiz-Seguin for Week 5 and then the aforementioned Jason Dupuis from Week 6 on, Previllon has registered 11 catches for 187 yards and 8 TDs. Most WR’s would take 8TDs in a season Previllon has done it in 3 games. Last week against the Bloodmachines, the dynamic receiver caught 4 of those 8 TDs and got 112 of those 187 yards.
Jonah Cohen (Smash Bros) – I am beginning to think that I should just reserve a spot here for Cohen every week. The top pivot in Div. E had another great game Tuesday night as he and his team demolished the Big Blue Wrecking Crew 44-6. Cohen threw 232 yards and 7 TDs which were both Week 8 highs. Receiver Paul Santache benefitted the most from Cohen’s passing as he finished with a game-high 76 yards and 3 TDs on 3 catches.
Step It Up
Big Blue Wrecking Crew – These guys definitely deserve a spot on this list. Their game against the Smash Bros was essentially over at halftime as SB jumped out to a 26-0 lead. Little to no adjustments appeared to be made at halftime as the Bros scored 3 more TDs in the second stanza. The loss was doubly bad for BBWC as far as the playoff race is concerned as they are now tied with Royalty for the final playoff spot in Conference B. While Big Blue Wrecking Crew holds the tie breaker over Royalty curtesy of their Week 6 30-12 win over them, Royalty closes out the regular season with a much easier schedule than BBWC. Let’s see what happens.
Bobby Sepentgis (The Fat and the Furious) – I was tempted to put no name QB Jesse Racine here, but Sepentgis’ history gave him the nod as he threw 2 more picks this past Sunday night against the Smokin’ Axolotls. He finished the evening 4 of 10 for 42 yards and those 2 interceptions. In the 5 games in which Sepentgis has taken snaps behind Center, he has thrown 14 INTs. Step it up my friend.
Low Scoring – Out of the 10 games this past week, 9 teams failed to score more than 3 TDs. Some of that naturally has to do with good defense, but some of it also has to do with drops, bad passes, and poor execution. Step it up boys.
Elite 8
Los Guapos – For the first time this season, there is a new number 1 on the Elite 8 list. After beating the Bloodmachines in Week 6 and pulling out a tough win a week later against JeanGuy, they took care of business and laid a beating on Mile Public House. Los Guapos finish the regular season against Been There Done That and the Big Blue Wrecking Crew. I think LG keeps their new spot.
Flight of the Conchords – FOTC continues to impress. In their last three games, they have beaten their opponents by a combined score of 94-25. I expect the domination to continue this week as they take on the Big Blue Wrecking Crew.
Bloodmachines – They fell 2 spots curtesy of losing 2 out of their last 3 games. There QB play has been on the shaky side the last couple of weeks. They face their toughest part of the schedule at the worst possible time as they take on the Smash Bros and FOTC in Week 9 and 10 respectively. A loss to either team will see not only the fear factor of facing them totally vanish (if it hasn’t already), but they will also will slide down on this list.
No name– They drop a couple of spots due to their loss to the Looney Goons. They have a tough game coming up this Sunday against an underrated and rapidly improving offensively Smokin’ Axolotls squad. This will be a huge game for both teams.
Smash Bros – The offensive machine keeps on rolling. Once again, their upcoming game against the Bloodmachines will be HUGE.
Redmen – As I said last week, their game against TDs and Beer would have an impact on the rankings. Obviously it did, as they now take their opponents spot. The Redmen have another big test this week when they take on the Looney Goons.
Looney Goons – They make their debut because of the quality of the opponent that they beat. As I mentioned before, they have been one of the hottest teams in all of Div. E. They take on the team just above them on the list. As expected, the result will have a big impact on the Elite 8.
#Baton – Another team make their Elite 8 debut. They also get on over the Falcons based on strength of opponent. They have a game against JeanGuy this Monday that truly should be entertaining.
Picks
The Fat and the Furious vs Falcons – The will make it 4 wins in a row as their stout defense will completely overwhelm whichever QB The Fat and the Furious trot out on Sunday
Redmen vs Looney Goons – This should be a really good game. The Redmen have lost 2 out of their last 3 games, but are coming off of a shocking 27-13 win over TDs and Beer. The have finally learned how to execute and win, and come into the game winners of 3 straight. They have the more offense right now so I am going with them.
Smokin’ Axolotls vs no name© I think no name and D-Coordinator Rob White are still pissed off after their loss to the Looney Goons, I think they get back on track this week.
JeanGuy vs #Baton Simon Laporte will need to have a gigantic game in order to slow down #Baton Jason Dupuis. While I have no problem betting on Laporte to come through, I don’t think he’ll get the help he’ll need from the rest of his team.
Bloodmachines vs Smash Bros – The best offense in Div. E takes on a team that’s looks a little lost right now. Patrice Lindor, Cesar Martinez, Felix-Antoine Lavinge, and company will have their hands full trying to slow down Jonah Cohen and company. I don’t think they can do it.
Been There Done That vs Los Guapos – In the words of my protege Moe Khan, this one could be over before kickoff.
Big Blue Wrecking Crew vs Flight of the Conchords – Insert the same Moe Khan quote here.
Mile Public House vs Royalty – This has the potential to be a sneaky good game. I think Royalty has the better Offense and Defense, so I’m going with them in this one.
Tigers vs One Man Show – One Man Show is the better team, and they should be able to come out with more focus after their surprising 37-31 loss to the Fuzzy Kittens.
Fuzzy-Kittens vs TDs and Beer – Which Fuzzy Kittens team and more importantly which Jordan Robert Chartrand will show up? While I was impresses with their performance in Week 8, I don’t think it’ll matter as they take on Isiah Allard and a TDs and Beer team who will be out with a vengeance after getting lit up by the Redmen.
Last Week: 7-3
Season: 51-17-1
