Inside the Redzone (Div C) – Week 3

After only three weeks of football, the competition and intensity are building up. Tony Tabet of Point Point didn’t waste any time and made a public statement about his team’s week two loss against the Cobras (which you can read at the end of my article). Continuing on this subject, Primetime were back to their old tricks and by that I mean fighting amongst themselves. Some might say it is alarming or weird that a team fights so much with each other however I completely disagree. I believe it brings them together because they leave everything on the field, literally. They do not hold anything inside and hence there are no pent up ill-feelings. Plus if they are undefeated, they must be doing something right. Until I see a Royal Rumble or a Steel Cage match, there is nothing to worry about but enough them; let’s look at what is happening in the world of FPF.

Around The League

Things are definitely looking up for the Briscoe High Hawks. I am sure you are wondering why I am saying that, especially after a 0-3 start. Am I crazy? Well yes I am however that has nothing to do with it. After having QB troubles in the first two weeks, they went out and signed Scott Kelly. He is an excellent passer who possesses a strong arm and the ability to lead a high-octane offense, in Division C of course. In his first appearance last Sunday, he put up 32 points while spreading the ball quite well. Furthermore he has great receivers in Garrett Taylor, Oliver Phillip, Anthony Daponte and J.P. Mancini so it will not be long he gets more comfortable; and that could be very lethal. He did lose in his debut but the future looks very bright for BHH.

Has anyone realized that Broccasion is averaging over 40 points scored per game? They have the number one offense in Division C but what is their secret? For one, their Division 3 experience in the Winter 2010 season is a big asset. Furthermore, the Cerantola brothers are stepping it up at the QB position in addition to the contribution from Winter 2010 D3 Defensive player of the Year, Kyle Lebofsky, who is their best two way player right now. Is this team the real deal? Well I’ll give you an answer in three weeks because their next three opponents are Mysterious & Magical Men, Chaos and Lobster Dinner.

Remember The Titans? I have a vague recollection of their glory days. They have been on the decline for a few seasons now. What is one to make of this franchise that was once amongst the elite? The team doesn’t even have the man that once was the face of the franchise, Yani Zavos. The only recognizable faces are Andrija Zecevic and Rick Cummins (who last played with them in Spring 2007). It looks like the team is in rebuilding mode with the freshman class but it is unclear the direction in which they are heading. Furthermore their playoff hopes are not looking good. So let’s wait and see what the Titans have in store for us.

Is it me or do the Mysterious & Magical Men of Terror look a lot like Dirty Birds, minus Jon Young and Rostyn Castleton? It is good to see a group of close friends not only stick together and but play to win. They are making a name for themselves in Division C, all without Young and Castleton. Do we have a QB controversy for the Dirty Birds? Well that is a topic for another day but for the time being, look out for MMM as they plan to climb up the rankings pretty fast and be nobody’s doormats.

Weekly Poll

I asked two questions last week and here are the results:

Question: Who is the best Division C caliber QB right now?

Winner: Eugene McLaren because of his ability to pass and run efficiently.

Question: Which team has the best name?

Winner: Lobster Dinner

Here are this week’s poll questions:

If you score a touchdown on the last play of the game and are down by 1 point, do you go for the:

a. tie

b. win

From the all winless teams, which team will be the last to get a win?

a. Titans

b. Vikings

c. Briscoe High Hawks

d. Jets

e. Vicious Canucks

Sarwar Standings

1. Fools Of The Country (3-0) – With Martin Tougas or Jonathan Lemieux at the helm, they are looking like the clear favorites to go undefeated.

2. Lobster Dinner (3-0) – Not a team with big names but their chemistry and timely plays are making them a contender.

di-font-weight: normal;”>3. Primetime (2-0-1) – Having the best defense in Division C, they stifle teams and offense is slowly coming along but when it does, look out!

4. Cobras (2-0-1) – Similar to Lobster Dinner, they succeed on knowing each other and playing their roles quite well.

5. Brocassion (2-1) – As mentioned before, their number one ranked offense makes them a serious threat however what remains to be seen is how they’ll handle their next three games.

6. Boom! Goes The Dynamite (2-1) – It appears they have exorcised their demons and are starting their journey to the top, however, it will not be easy. I like the addition of David Faucher because it adds depth to their roster.

7. Point Point (2-1) – A good rebound win after an embarrassing loss in week two but which Point Point team will we see next week?

8. Mysterious & Magical Men of Terror (2-1) – After a big win over Terror Squad, they are emerging as a serious threat. Can the Bisharas lead this team to the promised land?

9. Trojans (2-1) – On a two game winning streak, it appears they are slowly building chemistry and getting more comfortable with each other, and the division. Can they give the Cobras a run for their money?

10. Terror Squad (2-1) – The loss to MMM drops them five spots however they are still in the top ten for now.

Grind My Gears

You know what really grinds my gears, teams who just do not put in any effort to look good. It is bad enough they have weird team names and perform poorly on the field. So at least make sure you have nice jerseys and look good while you play. It costs 1700$ per team so assuming a team has 10 players, each person is willing to play 170$ to play in the league but can’t spend an extra 15$-20$ to get a nice jersey to look good? I mean I hear people saying all the time, “We’re a bunch of friends playing for fun, we don’t take the league seriously.” So that explains the lack of talent but is that a good enough reason to look like a bunch of hobos? There are many companies (two of them, Pro Sports and Darby Athletic Sportswear, are advertising on the home page of www.flagplusfootball.com) who will be more than happy to accommodate your wardrobe needs. So the next time you’re out on the field, dress well because even though you might be losing, at least you’ll go down in style. And that my friends, is what grinds my gears.

That’s it for this week’s column. As usual if you have any comments/suggestions, email me at [email protected]. I leave you with the following quote:

“I still can’t believe I had a loss in DC, we should’ve MURDERED those guys (not Those Guys but the Cobras). If we see them (Cobras) in the playoffs, we’re blowing them out” – Tony Tabet of Point Point on the week 2 loss against Cobras.
