Inside the Redzone (DC) – Week 3
Welcome to Inside The Redzone a la week trois! As you already read on our Facebook group, my article is now undergoing some changes because it was just plain boring and repetitive. Let’s face it, if players want to look at stats they can go on the website and read it themselves or in some cases, have someone read it to them. Therefore this column should be about the other side of FlagPlus Football, the one that is not entirely covered by Weekly Extra Point Live or by our website. I need to dig deep and find out the real scoop. For example, after much investigation the team name FOR TEH LULZ has finally been deciphered; it means For The Laughs. Hence For Teh Lulz are a bunch of guys who are in the league to have fun and don’t care that much about winning. Thank God for that because they aren’t winning more than 2-3 games all season. Nonetheless it is nice to see some friends playing together and doing it For The Laughs. Division C deserves to be entertained and I will make it my mission to do just that. And now a look at few headlines from last week’s action.
Week 3 Headlines
Who Needs A QB?
For a third straight week I haven’t seen the infamous PRO QB that should be present on the Green Machine roster. If they haven’t posted an ad on Craigslist yet, they better do it soon because their QB situation is in trouble. They lost their last game to the Cobras and are 1-2. Their next two games (Cowboys and Chaos) are also tough so it will not get any easier. Perhaps they should get Paul Crewe (QB of Mean Machine). Similarly Snookers are in desperate need of a QB. In the first half of their game against the Bandits in Week 3, the Eric Kavaldjian was sacked twice in the Snookers endzone for safeties. This team will only go as far as Eric Kavaldjian can take them and from the look of things, it won’t be too far. Furthermore, Eagles have not one, not two but THREE passers at their disposal but they must decide on one. Who? It is very tough to say because I don’t believe anyone of them can cut it but one thing is certain, all their training camps and practices aren’t paying off.
Martin Tougas: To Play or NOT To Play
Well I believe the answer is quite simple. He doesn’t belong in Division C and nobody in their right minds can argue that based on his skill and experience, but the real question is if he will play enough games to qualify for playoffs as oppose to just being a substitute? If I was Moe Khan, I would say there is a 60% chance that Martin Tougas will qualify for playoffs. The funny thing is that I still don’t think the Weasels will win with him in the line up, similarly to Spring ’08, but the underlying point here is that he doesn’t belong in division C, but there is no rule against it, so he can’t be faulted. The same could be said for P.A. Lebouthillier, however I will give him a pass because a QB has a bigger impact on a team than a receiver/defender.
Vadim WHO?
Vadim Chernyak! He had a monstrous performance this weekend: 10 tackles, 3 INTs and 1 PD. As I understand, he was all over the field and didn’t leave anything uncovered. He was missing a sack and a pick six for the complete sweep. More important, his team actually WON their first game of the season.
Half Evolved Mongoose?
Mongoose QB Alex Audet had a horrible game. It has been pointed out by many that he is just not an elite or even an above average QB and thus shouldn’t be put in that category. In other words, a 4 INT performance is probably not a shocker for this young man. I am not sure where I stand but one thing is for sure, he will have an incredible opportunity to make a name for himself next week because he will face the Bandits. If Alex can overcome Anthony Bozzo and the Bandits defense, I will personally give him a shout out on the WEPL.
Hasta La Vista Terminators
The Terminators beat the KGP Champs! If any player from the Terminator is reading this, give yourself a pat on the back because no one else will. Congratulations, you just beat a one legged QB and did it by using an All Star roster. You will play the Cobras next week in which Vinny Gualano of the Terminators will make his debut after serving a suspension. The Terminators have everything to lose because if they lose, it is an embarrassment but if they win, it is expected. I obviously pick the Cobras to win this game because I believe the strategy of putting together an All Star team (similar to the New York Rangers of NHL) will not translate into success. The Cobras have built chemistry over the past few seasons and that has helped them reach an elite status.
Three STAR-wars Of The Week
3rd star: Vince Mancini (Cowboys) had 65 yards with 2 TDs on offense and 7 tackles with 1 PD on defense.
2nd star: Vadim Chernyak (Rude Bwoys) had 10 tackles, 3 INTs and 1 PD and helped his squad win their first game of the year.
1st star: Anthony Bozzo (Bandits) was a one man wrecking crew. On offense he had 4 catches for 62 yards and 3 TDs. On defense he had 3 sacks of which 2 were safeties.
TOP GUNS – Part I (QBs)
Here is a list of the top 5 quarterbacks in Division C:
- Alex Lever has done a remarkable job with the Cobras and their offense. The team has scored 99 points in 3 games and Alex has 14 passing TDs, 545 yards, 4 INTs and 2 sacks. He is a great pocket passer but can also use his legs to avoid a quick rush.
- Eugene McLaren of Chaos has finally assembled the perfect supporting cast. With veterans such as Jason Edwards, Mike Dwyer and Rehan Sarwar, he is now able to play to his full potential. Chaos has the 2nd ranked offense and Eugene has 14 passing TDs and only one INT and sack. He leads all QBs in rushing yards. He makes good decisions and demands only the best from himself.
- Karim Chaoual is the face of the Triple Sixers franchise. His team has the number 1 ranked offense and he leads all QB with passing TDs and yards. He has the ability to break games wide open with accurate passing and good decisions. He is also a leader for his team on and off the field (please the Triple Sixers Facebook group wall).
- Phil Cutler, no relation to Jay Cutler, is not your smartest quarterback however he works hard to make put points on the board. He has a strong arm for deep balls but a quick release for the short game. He is recovering from a knee injury which he suffered in Spring 08 season but has managed to put up decent numbers. He has the potential to be an elite QB but it hasn’t been reached yet.
- John Moodie is a name you will not hear that much but it is a name that merits being mentioned in this category. His play calling can be questionable at times but he can make a broken play look quite successful. He has a strong arm and reads defense really well. Furthermore he uses his legs to generate some yards, 98 in 3 games to be exact. A solid all around QB.
Next week, I’ll look at the top 10 receivers in Division C.
Week 4 Review
These are a few of the games that will be fun to watch:
- Triple Sixers vs. Eagles (5 pm on field 3) – Karim Chaoual gets a small test by going up against Francois Imbeault. Although I believe Karim should be able to overcome this match up, the Triple Sixers defense will eat the Eagles quarterbacks alive.
- Cobras vs. Terminators (6 pm on field 1) – Simon Rheaume and J.F. Trudeau are going to neutralize Kevin Marlow and the Terminators offense. As a result, Alex Lever will capitalize on his opportunities and HASTA LA VISTA Terminators.
- Cowboys vs. Green Machine (7 pm on field 1) – Cowboys are slowly finding their rhythm and will continue their success over Green Machine whether or not Paul Crewe is in the line up.
- Monstars vs. Run’n’Wild (10 pm on field 1) – Why is this going to be a good game? Well both teams are 0-3 so they are equally matched which should provide for a close, intense game. You might want to bring an mp3 player, magazine or a girlfriend just in case but expect a close game.
Tips Of The Week
A lot of players are talking trash nowadays whether it is on Facebook or the field but here is the problem, they do it before having won the game. If you want to talk trash, make sure you can back it up or else you will look an idiot. Therefore the lesson is win first, talk second.
Also if any teams are having trouble with their playbook or things aren’t working out for you (meaning you are off to a bad start) and you need some help, watch division A games. There is a lot that you can learn from watching players from higher division. For example, you can see how the Rainmakers, Shockers and Ruff Ryders of Happiness run their offense. For help on defense, refer to Chalk Talk in our Video – Weekly Extra Point Live section (click on View Archive Videos). You never know what you might learn! If you see Rostyn Castleton yelling at the referees, ignore that because most of us do.
That’s it for this week’s column. My columns will slightly vary every week so you will see some new material all the time. As a result, you will never know what to expect on a weekly basis. As always, I welcome your feedback and welcome any suggestions you might have for my column. Please contact me at [email protected] or via Facebook. Good luck to all this weekend and catch you all next week!
