Inside the Redzone (D4) – Week 10

 

Can you feel it? Do you smell it? It’s playoff like atmosphere everywhere you look, such as the NHL, NBA, March Madness and of course, FlagPlus Football. Most of the teams have already clinched playoff spots and this week’s action will simply decide their place in the standings. There are, however, still a couple of spots up for grabs. One of the teams in those spots is X-Men, who have improved tremendously since the beginning of the season. If the playoffs started tomorrow, they would be in as the 8th seed however they still have one game left to play. They do control their own destiny therefore if they can defeat the Spartiates in their last game, they are in the post-season. Zone de turbulence!

 

Les Jets se sont mesurés aux talentueux Snookers la fin de semaine dernière et en ont retiré…une NULLE? Et oui, mesdames et messieurs, ils ont quitté le stade avec un point en banque ce qui devrait, en principe, représenter une victoire pour les fans des hommes en vert. Malheureusement pour leur ego, ils ont joué le match en avantage numérique (6 contre 5) d’un bout à l’autre ce qui en dit long sur l’écart de talent entre ces deux formations… Comble de malheur, les Jets doivent à présent battre les Gators et espérer une défaite des surprenants X-Men qui jouent contre une des pires équipes de la conférence. Si cela se produisait, nous aurions droit à une revanche intéressante contre les Triple Sixers qui n’ont pu faire mieux qu’une victoire de 30-27 sur les Jets lors de leur dernière confrontation. À mon avis, ca sent l’atterrissage forcé!

 

De zéros à héros?

 

Les panélistes du WEPL ont fait la vie dure aux Briscoe High Hawks ces dernières semaines après qu’ils se soient inclinés contre les Time Bombs puis contre Venom. L’équipe de J.P. Mancini s’est toutefois ressaisie en défaisant facilement les Falcons, les Cowboys et les Cobra Commanders, 3 équipes qui reposent au bas de la D4. Sont-ils à prendre au sérieux ou devrait-on immédiatement écarter la possibilité d’une percée en séries d’après saison? C’est à vous de décider! Voici quelques statistiques qui devraient éclairer votre choix : 5 victoires contre des équipes ayant une fiche combinée de 14-31 et 4 défaites face à des équipes présentant une fiche combinée de 26-10… La réponse me semble TRÈS claire!

 

 

Tic Tac! Tic Tac!

 

BOOM! Goes The Dynamite semble vouloir poursuivre leur travail de dynamitage eux qui viennent d’accumuller SIX victoires de suite. Après un lent début de saison (1-2) ils se sont graduellement transformés en véritables prétendants au championnat défaisant leurs adversaires par un pointage combiné de 222-91! Mis à part les Warriors et les Triple Sixers, aucune autre équipe n’a montré autant de constance à travers la saison régulière que BOOM! La statistique la plus révélatrice dans leur cas : 6 points alloués de moins que les Warriors, ce qui leur confère la meilleure défensive de la ligue! Quelle est la recette de leur succès retentissant? Un quart-arrière grandement amélioré en Edward Shoshan (42 TC / 10 INT), 5 receveurs affichant au moins 17 réceptions et 5 TC ainsi qu’une défensive étanche ayant réussi 21 interceptions dont 2 retournées pour des touchés en seulement 9 match! Mentionnons également la domination de la « BÊTE » Chris St-François qui se pointe au premier rang dans la D4 au niveau des sacs (19). BOOM! Goes The Dynamite sont présentement en pleine possession de leurs moyens et leur domination des dernières semaines pourrait bien se traduire en un long parcours en séries éliminatoires.

Sarwar Standings

This is the last power rankings for the season because next week the playoffs will start. In the spirit of March Madness, next week I’ll make a bracket for the playoffs and will keep it up to date on a weekly basis till we have crowned a champion.

 

1. Warriors (9-0): Simply the best.

 

2. Triple Sixers (8-1): Simply the second best.

 

3. BOOM! Goes The Dynamite (7-2): A six game winning streak and looking stronger than ever.

 

4. Time Bombs (7-2): Only a plus 26 point differential, but still a stop contender.

 

5. Snookers (6-2-1): Anytime you can tie a game with only 5 players playing most of the game, you belong in the top 5.

 

6. Gators (6-3): Still a dominant team, but must close out the season strong.

 

7. Marauders (6-3): Impressive wins against Balls Deep, however, a win against Warriors will show everyone that the Winter ’08 finalists are legitimate contenders once again.

 

8 Served With Ice (6-3): On a four game winning streak and will finish with a 7-3 record.

 

9. Sharks (5-3-1): A crucial win over Trapstars puts them in a good spot, however, can they stand among the giants?

 

10. Flight Of The Concords (5-4): They had an incredible win over Gieuth last weekend and face a tougher opponent in Guerillaz, this weekend. They have improved a lot, but are they outright contenders?

Rehan’s Role Players (RRP)

 

This week’s RRP is Pedro Pana of the Trapstars. He hasn’t received a lot of publicity, but ask any defense who has played against him, and they’ll tell you he is not the easiest QB to control. Although Trapstars have a few decent receivers, Mr. Pana doesn’t have any BIG NAME players that you might see on other teams, but he finds ways to get the ball to most of them (6 receivers with at least 100 yards). Furthermore, he is a General on defense and leads by example. To top it off, he is very shifty, so it is not easy to sack him (only 6 sacks allowed on the year). In Winter 2009, he rushed for 605 yards and scored 6 TDs, which goes to show his elusiveness.

 

This season he suffered an injury, but was able to tough it out for the good of the team. Trapstars are currently 4-5 and have clinched a playoff spot; an accomplishment that is heavily attributed to Pedro Pana’s leadership on and off the field. He hasn’t had the best offensive year (18 TDs, 19 INTs) however he managed to win the games and lead his team into the playoffs. Defensively he has 18 tackles, 3 INTs, 1 sack and a “pick six”. The team will go as far as this young man can take them and even though he is a little raw, there is tremendous potential, which will develop in the upcoming seasons. He is a leader, a sergeant and a great competitor therefore, Pedro Pana, you ARE a RRP!
