Inside the Red Zone (Div E) – Week 7

Welcome back once again Division E players, fans and supports. I know you enjoyed yesterday’s read and continuing along with “Behind The Flag” I’ll continue with the next two teams. Just a reminder that I will be filling in for Peeze during our next podcast because he’s off to Europe to “promote FPF”. If you have any topics or suggestions for our show, please contact Terry Tam or myself.

Behind The Flag

Tomahawk Nightmare

They’ve had up and down season however their offense has been red hot as of late due to the stellar play of Jean-Francois Marquis. He joined me and answered a few questions about his squad.

What is your role as a GM and what do you contribute to the team?

I am the GM, my contribution for my team is my experience in flag/touch/football. I’ve been playing for the past 10 years on a bunch of different leagues and that experience helps in that division, even if I am on the field or on the bench. As a matter of fact on the Tomahawk nightmare there are only 2 players other than me that ever played some find of football. Like Robert said it’s a league for beginners and new teams and because of that I don’t play on the defensive side of the ball. [Editor’s note: JF Marquis has played exceptional defense at the higher level so I respect his humility in this decision]

Your most improved player on offense and defense?

Because of the non-experience of the team I have to say everyone improved in the last few weeks. I will pick some guys that never ever played football. Offense: Olivier Savage: great hands, gets open, uses his legs for some YAC. Defense: Benoit Garceau: great tackler, always close to his receivers, respect his zone coverage which is now his role in the defense.

What has been your team’s biggest challenge?

Our biggest challenge is to understand flag-football. On offense sometimes I ask for some routes, and the players don’t do exactly what I want, sometimes we don’t get open so we just go somewhere else. On defense It’s hard to explain to someone that never played zone that he has to play man to man in his zone, and if there is 2 players, he has to take the most dangerous one. But that said, we improve every week to be ready for the playoffs.

Expectations for yourself as a QB to close out the season?

As a new QB I want to spread the ball. I don’t want to run, I don’t want to use only 2 receivers. I want my friends to have a great experience with flag. For myself I want to throw more td’s than int’s and win games. It’s all about that.

Who chose the name Tomahawk Nightmare and why?

A player on the team chose tomahawk. For the nightmare, when I played for the Express, we almost changed our name to Montreal’s nightmare. That’s where it comes from. I like it because when you throw a tomahawk it’s fast and accurate. That’s exactly how I want to throw the ball, fast and accurate. So that way other teams will be having nightmare about us the night before the final hahaha

Why haven’t you had success against the top tier teams in Div E?

We didn’t have success because we are a bunch of friends who liked to throw football in the park and we decided to make a team. We are not football players. If you take a look at the majority of the player in the top tiers, they are in their 2nd-8th season in FlagPlus. For sure we are going to lose against them.

What will it take for your team to win the championship?

Beat Golden Girls with their division 2 Qb and their Montréal Alouette receiver.

What a great individual and one hell of a competitor! It’s players like him that make our game the best across the world. Now it’s time to look at our second team.

Dat’s Big

It’s no secret that I’ve been critical of their play week after week. They are currently 2-6 and barely clinging on to the last playoff spot. Regardless, I sat down with Terry Tam who isn’t only the host of Division E podcast but also a FPF veteran.

Who is the GM and what does he contribute to the team?

Moe Khan is a great GM. He brings knowledge of the league and he’s a great guy to play for.

Your most improved player on offense and defense?

Most improved on offense is Moe Khan. Slowly we’re seeing him manage and control games a lot better. [Editor’s note: I guess no improvements on defense?]

Why is your team so inconsistent given the big names on the roster?

Our defense as a whole has improved. Without Steven Hodhod we’re lost.

If Dat’s Big makes the playoffs, are they one and done?

Inconsistency comes without chemistry. I find that the lack of consistency in the team is due to a bunch of new guys trying to implement a bunch of styles, especially on offense.

What has been your team’s biggest obstacle so far and what you have done to overcome it?
Biggest obstacle has been allowing Moe Khan to go through his growing pains which I think are over.

Who chose the name Dat’s Big and why?

Dats big is an inside joke between rob and Moe.

What will it take for your squad to defeat any of the top tier teams in Div E?

I think our defense can shut down any team and that’s the key to us winning.

Well there you have it, Terry Tam is a man of few words but it’s straight to the point.

I want to thank both of my guests for taking time to do this and wish them the best of luck down the stretch. Make sure to check back tomorrow for the next two teams on “Behind The Flag”.
