Peeze’s Playbook & FPF News Reel
Week 3

by Paolo Della Rocca

This week, rather than my usual ramblings I wanted to use my introduction to explain what the direction of this article is, as it is different from most of our joint articles. Firstly, due to time constraints, it includes my recaps from last week. The reaps themselves include a spotlight on specific conversations and players that I had a chance to speak to and watch last week.  The article then includes, our impressions and depressions, followed by our picks and our fantasy segment.

Class Never on Lockdown

I watched this game from the Lockdown sideline.  I had ample opportunity to discuss it with Lockdown Quarterback Pat Riot.  Pat talked about the Black Sox team that is most recent to FPF and he was impressed with their attitude and willingness to learn the game.  Obviously, given Lockdown’s tenure alone this was going to be a long game for the Black Sox.  Riot told me, “I’m not going to take my foot off the gas, I don’t want to disrespect them like that but I’ll call plays I’ve been wanting to try/practice”.  I thought about this and realized that this was a very interesting and mature approach to an FPF game. Lockdown would go on to win easily (37-12) and Maxime Chateuneuf would put up video game numbers (5 catches for 108 yards, 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions).

The Blacksox actually scored early in this game on a long pass where Nico Lanni burned by Steven Alberico for a touchdown on the first drive of the game.  Lockdown then adjusted and we saw the struggles of an emerging quarterback. Three different players attempted passes in this game Bryan Pereira, Tony Scaglione and Massimo Marrone.  This of course isn’t a way for any new quarterback to improve.  However, I will say that I can understand the frustration as whoever was behind centre struggles.  Blacksox are good dudes and have a few players with ability.  They do need to pick a direction and improve on that for future games and seasons.  While the quarterbacking wasn’t strong, there were drops, blown coverages and poor route running that plagued this team.  Work needs to be done but I’m excited to see how this team will improve as they learn.

Highest Tops and Lowest Places

Danny D’Amour for Friends in Low Places is my spotlight in this game.  Given that D’Amour was the underdog, I expected him to slow down the pace of the game.  He admitted to me close to the second half that the game got away from him early.  Rob Robinson keyed in on D’Amour’s eyes and intercepted him on a deep pass.  Later, D’Amour was able to use his eyes to open the blond blur Jarred Buck on a deep pass for one of his 3 touchdown grabs.  Rob Robinson first interception however, was one that he baited and returned for 6.

Paul Lapierre himself had a pair of interceptions and returned one for a touchdown as Danny D’Amour tried to force a pass over the giant’s head but it was intercepted and returned down the beanstalk to Friend’s in Low Place’s dismay.  The second of Robbie Robinson’s interceptions was the one that gave Top Guns the opportunity to run away beyond the point spread.  I had my doubts last season about the alternating quarterback approach for Top Guns but Robbie Robinson was 5/5 in this game and threw 2 touchdowns. It also added some unpredictability and some energy at time for Top Guns.  They would win this game 54-25.

Dans Tams and Automobiles

So the player of interest in this game is one who’s always been somewhat controversial.  Not because of his stances regarding the national anthem but because of his horrendous use of joggers under his shorts and his ugly style of play.  Joey Taylor, I believe will one day be an FPF Hall of Famer.  His stats are ridiculous and if he adds a championship or two he will be a lock.  In a short time Taylor has amassed four 50 touchdown seasons and 8 seasons with more than 40 touchdowns.  He is however a strange dude.

After every Dans & Tams touchdown Taylor came off the field and allowed Alex Holowach to attempt a convert.  His reasoning is that he felt throwing converts would risk injury.  When pressed he felt there was a greater chance at risking injury than on a regular play.  However, to Taylor’s defense, he looked good despite a sprained ankle and his trust throw to long time teammate Foti Evangelista for a touchdown in a crowd was JT magic.  Dans & Tams were able to overcome Terry Tam’s allergy to interceptions as he dropped a would be interception in the end zone.  The infection spread to Matthew Rupcic later as it would happen on the other side of the field as well but, Dans & Tams would go on to win 33-13 over Smoking Axolotls.

For Smokin’ Axolotls, I was surprised in the first week where they completed few passes and Will Power caught only 1 pass for 5 yards.  This was rectified by quarterback Jason Rossie who kept throwing jump balls over the middle of the field where Will Power would go up and moss either Alex Holowach or GM Kolethras.  Smoking Axolotls didn’t truly have a chance in thes game but there was some definite growth to move forward from.

A QB has No Name

I took some time to watch Sean Collins play quarterback for No Name.  I have some issues with his play as well as his teammates. Collins tended to move out of the pocket when his first look wasn’t available.  His vision would narrow and he would run toward the sideline after one read did not open up.  His arm strength is sub par, but that isn’t a problem for most QBs in FPF.  He needs to call plays that will benefit his style of play.  His plays were too difficult for a new quarterback to read and required too much precision from his receivers. His pre snap reads need to improve as well.  Often Denzel Eadie-Lowe scared the man who was covering him and often had a 10-12 yard cushion.  Yet, Collins never called a short hook or quick, in-breaking route.

The team also needs to help him.  I noticed a lot of miscommunication and receivers and quarterback need to be on the same page.  Often Collins had to struggle because the plays did not develop as he thought they would.  Some of that is related to his reading and play calling and some of that is a communication issue that needs to be resolved.  Collins was removed from quarterback for a while and replaced by Robert White.  White didn’t do a lot better and I believe that in order for Sean Collins to improve he needs the reps.  On defence No Name was solid as Robert White and Denzel Eadie-Lowe intercepted passes.

Bruins arrived with a new quarterback this game. Thomas Forget looked great in warm ups but only attempted 7 passes in the game. Nelson Pereira entered the game and it became more of what we expect from the Bruins.  There were moments where they could move the ball and other moments where the offence seemed stuck. The highlight for Bruins was the play of Antoine Hyunh who caught 6 passes and scored twice and on defence he recorded a sack and three PDs. Both of these teams have a lot of work to do but have the players and commitment to make improvements for the next round.  Bruins would go on to win this game 19-16.

Impressed / Disappointed

By Simon Dagenais

The first round is coming to a close and many teams now know their own faith. Some managed to cover the spreads, some didn’t quite get there, but the tournament doesn’t stop here. With many games left on the docket, you’ve all got plenty of time to turn these comments around.

Impressed

Disappointed

Simon

  • Bruins got their first Win of the season as they shock the favorite NoName in a close defensive battle. If this group can build from this win and rally every week, they’re in for a very interesting Fall season.
  • Los Banditos might not be the most known/flashiest of teams, but this week’s win over Farmers shows they’ve got a deadly defence and they can rally well even when their offence isn’t always clicking.
  • KGP Ra made a quick switch at QB and managed to upset the heavily favorite #NR. Nothing short of impressive.
  • After a few good offensive weeks, Sons of Mitches couldn’t generate any sort of offence on Wednesday and couldn’t put up a fight against Hold My Beer. Hopefully, their offensive woes won’t continue into the following round.
  • I expected Braves  to sweep their grouping and play with the top teams in the following round, but they’ve fell flat this week and dropped an egg. And their starting QB was present.
  • BearSkins finished their season at 0-3. Being the 2nd seed coming into the tournament in their grouping, I expected them to, at least, get a win. Both sides of the ball as fell flat recently, but they’ll get a chance to turn things around starting next round; if anything, they’ve turned into major favorites.

Peeze

  • Top Guns: I know what you’re going to say.  A top tier team hammered a weaker team.  How’s that impressive.  Well, I didn’t buy into the trick play/multiple QB playbook that Paul Lapierre brought in last season.  I was wrong.  This game was evidence.  Playmakers like Lapierre, Rob Robinson and Don Sheppard made plays.
  • DK: DK was considered to be the top team in the tournament.  They have not disapppinted.  This was a great 6 touchdown performance by Rochdi Benabdelkader.
  • All Hooks: All Hooks simply have the best defence in Tier 2.  They are young, fast and fun to watch. Charles Fontiane gets less publicity then some others on this roster but he is a solid contributor.
  • Greendale Human Beings: This was one of the more exciting games of the week.  I thought that GHB’s defence would do a better job of containing Stephen Harripersaud.  I was wrong.
  • Ducks: I know they’re new. I did think however that Zachary Frankiel would be better at protecting the ball.  He needs to stay calm and composed heading into the next round.
  • #NR: When No Regard broke into FPF they were known for having an oppressive defense.  They have evolved and have become a better offence over the years.  A 34-33 loss to KGP RA leads me to believe that they need to get back to their identity. Travis and Jordan Moses as well as Jeremy Anderson. Know that the onus is on you!

Francois

Games of the Week

By Francois Martin

FPF Daily Fantasy Football

In last week’s fantasy matchups, Simon failed to recognize value across the board and came up last and barely broke 100 points.  I finished in second with some big performances but lacklustre play from Travis Moses and Justin Blanchard.  On the other hand Francois Martin had nothing but solid performances across the board.

Fantasy Rules and Scoring

Each week, Simon, Francois and I will select a quarterback, 3 wide receivers, a rusher a defensive back (where only their defensive points will count) and a flex player who’s offensive and defensive contributions will count.  Players weekly price will be determined by their cap hit +/- the spread in their games.  Moreover, we cannot exceed a cost of 560 points.

This is a PPR league (Points Per Reception league) so, snappers you will not be neglected.  The scoring breaks down as follows:

  • Quarterbacks: 1 point per 15 yards passing, 3 points per passing td, 1 point per 5 yards rushing, 5 points per rushing TD. -2 points will be deducted per interception and -1 point will be deducted per sack.
  • Wide Receivers: 1 point per catch, 1 point per 5 yards receiving, 5 points per TD
  • Rusher: 2 points per tackle, 7.5 points per sack, 3 points per PD, 5 Points per TD
  • DBs: 2 points per tackle, 4 points per interception, 3 points per PD and 5 Points per TD
