Division D Week 1 Recap

Safe to say, this has probably happened to more people then they’d care to admit.

Nope, not talking about that.

I’m talking about that anticipation and excitement building up for weeks for that important meeting, first date, or in this case, the first game of the season. It builds up so much that you over prepare, over think the entire thing and end up just flopping.

Well, that’s the story of my first game this season. Luckily, my guys backed me up and we still came away with the win – however that same feeling starts all over again, anxious to get back on the field for redemption.

Enough about me.

I’m truly excited to be writing about Division D. Now that I have a full season of writing and analysing under my belt, I feel that I am better prepared and that I know a lot more about each team and the players on them. It’s interesting to see a lot of the same teams and then teams who blew everything up and started fresh.

Both Divisions look to be extremely competitive which is great for the league. I’ll keep it short this week but before diving into the good stuff, here are some thoughts of the week.

  • Another school shooting? Really? The answer seems so simple yet so far out of reach for the US.
  • I have way too many pictures, comments and opinions about the Royal Wedding on my Facebook feed all week. She’ll always be married to Mike Ross in my books.
  • The weather is finally good enough for me to take the roof off the Wrangler.
  • I’m beginning to feel like owning a house with my girlfriend is really settling in. I spend most of my weekends now at Rona or Reno Depot. Things could be much worse, though.
  • I can’t help but jump on the Vegas bandwagon. One of the better underdog stories and I can definitely picture a movie being made in 10 years.
  • Shoutout to the Smokin’ As for always playing a great game. Great bunch of guys and now a total of 3 points separates our last two games head to head.
  • How does a team only score 4 points!? Not because of the low total, but, 4!?
  • I haven’t checked, but there had to be a record amount of interceptions in Week 1. 37 in 12 games for D-1 and 37 in 11 games for D-1.
  • As a media member, it sucks that no team pictures have been taken – harder to get a true representation of each team.

Week 1 – Recaps

Division D1

Takeover vs. Super Saiyans

I had the opportunity to watch this one live and from the very beginning, you got the sense that these were two heavyweights of the division going head to head in week 1. Both teams tried to get their top targets involved early as well. Jordan Allard hit Rich Humes on a few short hooks in order to try and take advantage of the deep ball later in the game and that may have proven to be the difference. Just not in favour of the Super Saiyans.

I was most impressed by Takeover’s defense and their overall ability to tackle and not give up too many yards after the catch. The first half saw each team trade blows and feel eachother out before both defences started to take over in the second half. The Saiyans did a great job neutralizing William Power which means they had to be weaker somewhere else. As the Saiyans focused mostly on the middle of the field, Nyle Anderson was able to take advantage of two deep passes to the right of Ian Einheiber for deep scores.

I take you now to the beginning of the second half and the start of the defensive showdown. On Takeover’s first possession, Gianni Johnston sacks Ian Einheiber on 4th down to get the ball back for his team. Gianni was a force in this one with a total of 3 sacks and its too bad that the Saiyans offense could not take advantage. After the Saiyans punch it in this time for what would be the last of their touchdowns on the day, Nyle Anderson does his thing and scores on a 25 yard touchdown to tie the game.

When the Saiyans get the ball back, they go offside on 4th and short to make it 4th and 7. Much more difficult. As a result, Allard can’t find anybody to connect with and throws the ball over everybody’s head near the right sideline. Takeover gets the ball back with roughly five minutes to play and methodically drive the field. On the touchdown play, Julien Wilson makes one out of his three catches on the night on a quick out to give Takeover the lead. Cherry on top was the extra point to William Power. Yes, if you saw the stat sheet, he did actually play in this game. Will, I know you’d be the first to agree that 4 yards and a PD are below expectations. Saiyans had one play left and couldn’t convert. Game over.

Both teams came to play, but saw moments of rust a few times. Allard would love a few throws back I’m sure, Rich Humes dropped a deep one that would have been hard to catch and Ian missed a few as well, having to punt twice. Both teams should finish in a playoff spot and will be able to compete week in and week out.

The Sheriff vs. Fun Boys

This game should be a lesson to most teams out there – get to games on time. This game started with a free 6 points awarded to The Sheriff because the Fun Boys showed up late. They finally managed to get 6 guys 5 minutes into the game. Also, as a result, when you show up late, you tend to not be focused and make mistakes and The Sheriff took advantage.

We’ve had almost two months off now, so it’s normal to be rusty. Scott Mironowicz probably wasn’t seeing the field very well early and it showed, throwing an interception on his first drive right to Kevin Lubin who had a great game overall with 2 touchdowns and an interception. The turnover lead to a really decisive drive by Luis Begin and finished it off with an out route to Philippe Aussant, not before keeping the play alive with his feet. Two more touchdowns would follow to Lubin and Ostiguy before Fun Boys managed to score before the end of the first half.

The second half told a much different story as Scott Mironowicz and the Fun Boys finally got into a rhythm. He used his legs with great success and hit his receivers with much greater ease. Perhaps it was over confidence by The Sheriff, however they seemed to take their foot off the gas and let the Fun Boys back into the game. Brendan Parm, Wade Taylor and Fred Saleh all had great second halfs to get Fun Boys into a position to potentially win the game.

With two minutes left in the game and the chance to ice it, Begin decided to go for it on 4th down in his own end of the field and failed, giving the ball back to Fun Boys and they capitalized, bringing them game to a difference of 7 points. The Sheriff got the ball back and got to another 4th down. Nothing was going to stop Begin this time around and he tossed it to Alexandre Guertin who made a fantastic catch for the 1st down and sealed the victory.

All I can say is that I wonder if there would have been a different outcome had the Fun Boys showed up on time.

Division D2

Green Lantern Corps vs. Longhorns

Everybody knows the line, “Crab cakes and Football, that’s what Maryland does”. Well,  just as crab cakes and football are synonymous with Maryland, FPF is synonymous with the Longhorns. That being said, you have to give credit where credit is due. Green Lantern Corps, a team moving up from lower divisions went toe to toe with the savvy vets and came away victorious. While the Longhorns stuck to their gameplan and tried to march systematically down the field, Green Lantern Corps proved to simply have more firepower and this proved to be the difference.

The game started pretty evenly, which is expected as this is the first meeting between the two teams. Jon Moodie does not make a lot of mistakes and was able to spread the ball around with relative ease but the guys in green bought their time and tried to slowly figure out Moodie’s patterns and tendencies. As Green Lantern began taking chasnces and jumping routes, Moodie began throwing incomplete passes just a bit more often. Sure enough, a few punts and turnovers on downs.

Hai-Minh Luong, armed with both his desire to prove me wrong and his new found weapon named Riccardo Desrosiers, put on an offensive clinic and threw for 229 yards and 5 touchdowns overall. While Desrosiers had a great game and was an offensive force, it was targets both new and old that helped Luong get the job done. It will be interesting to watch the combination of Desrosiers and Cardichon moving forward.

The difference in this game, though, would be the times that the Longhorns had to turn the ball over either on downs or by punting. Giving Green Lantern Corps the extra posessions ended up costing the Longhorns in this one. I am anxious to check in on them this week and see if they can find their magic again from the winter season. It looks like they did not have Patrick Jazon for this game who would have helped them out significantly.

Ryan Reynolds and company will look to challenge for the division lead and normally the Longhorns would be up there with them, but time will tell.

Wrecking Crew vs. Grabuge

One of the other division power house teams with a lot of expectations are the men in orange, Wrecking Crew. After coming off a disappointing loss in the finals in the Winter, they looked to tweak their roster just a little bit and add a few more weapons to get right back there this spring season in a division that should be just as competitive. Regardless, even after a few hiccups to start the game and not being as sharp as they would have liked, Harripersaud and the rest of Wrecking Crew came away victorious.

It can be difficult to drive a Ferrari, but of course, the dealer never tells you that. I imagine the conversation was short when the opportunity to land Kevin Smuda came about, but with anything, it can take some time to get used to your new toy. He just brings that size, experience and sure-handedness to the Wrecking Crew to compliment the rest of the squad, including guys likes Kevin Koussaie, Shyanne Stewart and Josh Levine.

Grabuge, on the other hand, looked to be a bit inexperienced and they had issues gelling together as well. They have a lot of solid players who can make big plays and they frustrated Stephen Harripersaud early, but they just couldn’t get it together on offence to be able to capitalize on the early turnovers. Nicolas-Emmanuel Pierre struggled to put completions together and while he made a few plays and tried to extend the play with his legs, it didn’t seem to work.

The collective effort by Wrecking Crew on defense and the outstanding game by Benjamin Bergeron was the story in this one. There’s actually a mistake on the stat sheet, Bergeron did not throw a TD but rather he caught a 3rd one, giving him 100 yards on the day and 3 TDs. Their defense also created a lot of turnovers, which is something they failed to do last season. Scary to think that they can be even better. Special shoutout to Stephen Harripersaud for getting his first ever interception, replacing Shyanne Stewart who left the game with an injury.

Power Rankings

Because you can tell so much after Week 1.

Division D1

  1. Ice Up – Giving them the top spot because of how dominant they looked without their starting QB. Adding Zergiotis and Jordan moving to receiver will make them even stronger.
  2. Takeover – They took out one of the divisions better teams and don’t look to have any weaknesses. Nyle Andersen gives them a much needed second option to Power.
  3. Half-A-Stars – Langburt continues to improve, but would love to see how they match up with a stronger opponent.
  4. The Brotherhood – A lot of depth and talent. Their defense is scary and Gittens can make tons of plays on offence.
  5. For the Show – Eddy Lee and his group of newcomers look to be making big plays or bust all season long. I wonder how long that will work.
  6. All Hooks – I’m learning not to take these guys too lightly.
  7. Show Me Your TDs – Alex David should be in the running for WR of the year and these guys have been playing together for a while now.
  8. B.D Bandits – I’ll humbly put my team at 8th after throwing 4 interceptions. We have a talented roster, I just need to be better.

Division D2

  1. Cheat Code – They just looked so dominant in game 1 and without Papich, let’s see if it continues.
  2. Wrecking Crew – These guys are like a well-oiled machine with an upgrade this season.
  3. Hot Boys Hotline – A lot of talent here, their biggest enemy will be themselves.
  4. Baby Kangaroos – Don’t take these guys lightly, they have a few big names on their roster who know how to win.
  5. Touched by An Angeletti – Great name and I must say, I was surprised by how well it all came together.
  6. Green Lantern Corps – Hai-Minh Luong looked like the starting QB that this team needs. Adding a force on offensive like Riccardo Desrosiers will greatly help this team.
  7. Ball So Hard U. – They looked good, but the real test will be this week against a team on this list.
  8. Blues Branleurs – Somebody will have to tell me how they gave up 4 points.

“You ball, You get the call”

Aaaand we’re back. New season. New Teams. New players. If my memory is good, and it usually isn’t, we have one repeat player this week who made this list last season – Zach Zwirn. Congrats, your name may or may not get put down in a record book somewhere. After all the stats and streaks Lebron gets credit for, I’m sure consecutive seasons getting a player of the week nomination can be squeezed in somewhere.

There are a lot of good players, athletes and football connoisseurs in Division D this season and I look forward to meeting those who make the list.

Two shoutouts this week. First, Andrew Langburt, who had a great game as well. Kept him off the list because the guys I chose this week came up big in close games and his was more of a blowout. He really only missed out because of a theme I went with, but either way, huge game. I know that I will see him here again this season. Secondly, Pat Lindor from Cheatcode who also had a solid game with 4 total TDs – 3 on offense and a pick-6.

Division D1

Ice Up – Jordan Mcinnins – 10/17, 213 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT, 2 catches, 25 yards, 1 rec. TD, 3 tackles

I’m not sure how many times a guy has passed for multiple TDs and caught one as well in the same game. Which position do you prefer to play?

I prefer to play WR. That’s my position I’ve played in tackle football and that is what I’m most comfortable playing.

On the same note, are you the main guy or will Jack be playing eventually? Do you think the team is stronger with you at QB or WR?

Jack will be our main guy for the rest of the season. I think the team is stronger with jack at QB and me at WR because those are both our natural positions.

Let’s hear how you guys came up with the name and do you plan on being one of the cockier teams in the division? I’ll be disappointed if not.

The name “Ice Up” comes from the great Steve Smith and I think it fits our team perfectly because I feel we have guys that will make unreal plays and let you know about it every time. There will be alot of talking when we play and the only way to stop it is to beat us. Good luck!

Green Hornets – Maxime Marsan – 5 catches, 34 yards, 1 TD, 3 tackles, 1 INT, 2 PDs, 1 Def. TD

You guys are a new team, tell us about the squad.

Yes we are a new team but we have known each other since highschool and also most of us played a lot of seasons in FPF. Our team is actually kind of a mix between two teams, Dope Boys and Jagerbomb with a few other additions like our QB Ali Ndao.

What are your expectations for the season?

Like every team I think we want to reach the finals but we want to play game by game and not focus too much on that part but I think we do have a competitive team that can surprise further down the season.

You and Ridwan had excellent games. What was the biggest factor in the comeback victory?

Everyone made at some point during the game a key play that kept us in the game. I think our offense played well for a first game all together, especially with out QB who hasn’t thrown a football in years. The defense though was the real game changer with that last pick by Ridwan in the last 5 plays. Big S/O to Texas BareManz, I have to admit we came out with the win but it could have easily been them, they gave us a hard time the whole game!

Gotham Knights – Alexandre Gaudet – 3 catches, 30 yards, 2 TDs, 5 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PD, 1 Def. TD

With the better QB rating, do you do a lot of coaching with Chris?

First le rating de Qb n’est pas très significatif, Chris a beaucoup d’expérience et un playbook solide. Il call la majorité des jeux mais Je lui donne des suggestions dans certaines situations et il est toujours ouvert aux conseils.

You had a strong game on both sides of the ball, should we expect these kind of performances all season?

Je vais essayer de garder le même rythme toute la saison c’est certain mais je crois que chaque game c’est un joueur différent qui va se démarquer car on a plusieurs gars capable de bien performer both side. Spécialement Mikey Candussi aura de très gros match.

You guys have been around for a while now, is this the best version of Gotham Knights you’ve ever had?

Show Me Your TDs – Alex David – 8 catches, 104 yards, 3 TDs, 3 tackles, 1 INT

When you put up a big game like you just did, does it feel like you’re getting in between family?

It doesn’t take a game like that to feel part of the family, me and the Addona’s have developed a strong relationship in the past 5 years. We didn’t know each other before then. In 2011 i was asked to help punch panda (the worst team in the worst division) to try and win a game, and if i managed that they would make the playoffs and gain valuable experience. I’ve been coaching football for the past 8 years so helping teams with no experience and building a competitive team is something i really enjoy. Anthony Carbone the qb at the time was a former Mcgill pitcher, and his brother Michael Carbone was a NCAA athlete also in baseball, I knew there was a lot of untapped potential. 2 years later the Carbone’s invited their cousins, the Addonas to come join the team and that year the team went undefeated. Punch panda became Checkmate but a lot of that core is now out of that league. Me, the Addonas and Paolo Della Rocca continued for a couple seasons together and friendship grew. It’s now become the thing I’m most fortunate about this league having met and gotten close to those guys . I’ve been to their weddings, we see each other outside of football, we’ve been to the hospital for each other, been through hard times, lots of on/off field joy and heartbreaks it’s as if we’ve known each other 20 years. So being that close, 1 big game doesn’t feel like im part of the family, i always feel part of the family. They are friends i will have for the rest of my life, football or no.

You and Mike have a lot of chemistry together, what contributes to that?

My chemistry with mike is something that we worked hard on, we’ve done alot of practicing outdoors and repping routes constantly, we’ve had alot of games together obviously as well as tournaments and exhibitions. i never miss games and i always play the same position so the plays we run are always run the same way. I’m not the best athlete but i feel my strengths are route running, hands and recognizing the defense so i get myself open consistently and try to be as reliable as possible which i think mike appreciates as a safety blanket, he knows where i’ll be, when i’ll be there without looking at me since it’s so routine (i wont cut a route short or cheat deep for a big score). Also, I think one of the things that really helped was during my masters in engineering we had a class on big data and needed to do a project with big data. I used mike as my subject and we charted every single throw and every single detail: throwing short/deep/left/right/mid was is scrambling? were feet planted? shoulder width? pointing towards target? did he follow through? etc etc.. charting every possibility we could determine out of the 300 or so throws in the season where his mistakes can from (was it reads and decision making or was it his feet, or was it his arm? we had unbiased video evidence and statistical results… for example you complete 40% of your passes if your feet are not set, 75% when they are… You follow through throwing to your left but not your right which affects this or that stat. It also shows us what routes hes most comfortable throwing and what concepts he reads well and makes proper decisions, knowing that we can refine the playbook. So lots of practice, game experience, consistent predictable route running, film work, analytics and off field chemistry

Who do you consider your competition for receiver of the year or even two way player of the year?

I don’t think i will play enough defence to be in consideration for 2 way player. But there is alot of good names playing D-1, some I’m not familiar with even though I’ve been in this league close to 10 years, so hopefully i wont offend anyone by leaving them off this list but of the players i know personally having played with or against here are some strong candiates: Jamal Gittens, Kevin Lubin, Alexis Gaumont, Steve Sanner, Justin Blanchard, Anthony Addona and Isiah Allard.

All Hooks – Charles-Olivier Lavigne – 16/22, 172 yards, 4 TDs, 5 rushes, 73 yards, 1 TD, 3 tackles, 1 INT

You have a few awards now, is the focus this season solely on winning a ship?

This season with all hooks, we definitely play it to win the ship! It’s been a few times that we lose in the final square, not this year!

Do you feel like you have one or two go to receivers or are a few guys on your team underrated?

It’s certain that three of my receivers are guys with whom I play since day one, but the other guys are exceptional athletes to whom I can certainly trust!

What’s something about you that most people don’t know?

That I am gonna shut them down at the defence to!

Division D2

Baby Kangaroos – Zach Zwirn – 7 catches, 62 yards, 3 TDs, 2 tackles, 2 INTs, 1 Def. TD

First things first, what happened on the attempted pass?

We were left with 3 plays to drive the field and we’re maybe 25 yards away from the end zone on last play of the half. We thought that we could maybe catch them off guard with some trickery so after the snap I dropped half and went qb and just threw it up. The rusher tipped the ball so it never had a chance of being a td but fell right into Joey Taylor’s hands 10 yards away from the end zone but he purposely dropped it to avoid a potential injury. Very disappointed to have my first career fpf pass go incomplete and would of retired from qb forever being 100%.

You’re obviously used to being the primary target, but does it help knowing you don’t have to be this season by the looks of it?

Absolutely. I think we’ve got a really well rounded team this year where everyone on the team can answer the call if there numbers called. When you start getting into the deep rounds of the playoffs (hopefully) and playing strong teams they’ll find ways to shut down what your comfortable with and the only way to beat that is with a consistent roster where everyone can make a play. We have that this year in my opinion so it definitely makes things easier on everyone, not just myself.

Scoring 32 points in a half isn’t easy. What worked so well, especially in your first game and having been off for a while?

Well one thing that definitely helps was that we were able to get a pick 6 early in the game which put us in a good position from the get go. Other than that we were just extremely efficient. We didn’t have any big monster plays but everyone made a play when we needed to make one and Eric at qb was essentially perfect. Making the right reads, calling the right plays, spreading the ball around and throwing it with accuracy. Collectively we were smart with our offense and made few mistakes in the first half which helped us get a good jump on the game.

Green Lantern Corps – Hai Minh Luong – 15/22, 229 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT

Did the preseason article provide any kind of inspiration for game 1 and/or the season as a whole?

I like to read article just to see how you think of us and I like prove wrong the article but at the end we are there on the field and give our best each game. At my age which I’m near the 40s than the 30s and I may look much younger, motivation is key because I’m playing against much younger player and I want to show my experience of the game.

You had a great game against a solid opponent. What worked well and what contributed to the big first win of the season?

I always play the same game. Finding the open receiver and be patient. Slowly I was able to see thru the defence scheme and find the holes. I’m always asking for feedback to my teammates so I can adapt my play calls.

I’m a big comic fan myself. Are most of the guys on your team as well? What are some of your favorites?

Good question. I don’t know if they like superheroes or not. My favourite is definitely Superman. Why? Superhuman vision of the game. J

Touched by An Angeletti – Shayne Feinberg – 24/30, 176 yards, 7 TDs, 3 rushes, 23 yards, 1 tackle, 1 sack

I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t give you guys a lot of credit before the season but you proved me wrong. How does it feel to get off to such a great start?

It’s definitely a good sign that we can build off last season’s first year in the league. We were so close to making the D6 finals this past winter and we’re definitely hungry for success again this season. We picked up a couple very solid veteran two-way players in Alex and Gordon, so we’re optimistic. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, it’s only been one game.

Your first season as a QB in FPF did not go so well. Has there been a big difference to how you’re seeing the field this season compared to last?

Last season was the first time I played QB in an organized competitive league since I was 10 years old, so I knew there would be a learning curve, especially in a QB driven league like FPF. But I did feel like I progressed steadily throughout the year. As a team we probably finished better than even we thought we would, so down the stretch inexperience combined with pressure packed situations probably played a part in my struggles. This year, I feel more much comfortable taking control of the offense. The biggest leap so far has been with my play calling and the way I’m visualizing route combinations in my head prior to the snap. I’m far from a finished product, but hopefully my mental game continues to improve this season.

Who came up with the team name and how is Alex handling all of the fame? Is it getting to his head?

We probably suggested close to 100 different team names before landing on this one so I’m not sure who came up with it. Is the fame getting to Alex’s head? I think the fame is getting Alex head! All jokes aside, he’s already threatened a holdout over a new contract, in which he’s demanded a 50% target share from here on out, as well as a very expensive post-game beer incentive package.

Cheatcode – Kevin Felima – 3 catches, 73 yards, 2 TDs, 2 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PD

In just one game, you’re catching up to your career FPF totals. What allowed you to have that much success on both sides of the ball in game 1?

I try to have the same mentality one play at a time. Don’t try to do too much in one, which will expose my teammates and the fact that We respect our assignment allow everyone to be successful.

You guys have a lot of weapons, are you worried you may got lost in the mix some games?

As far as we came out with the W, I’m good. We have a lot of good players, so if I get lost sometimes, that means someone else is playing great and that is good for us.

Who’s your favorite NFL player and why?

My favorite nfl player Desean Jackson. He is not that tall, that big, but man he is a dominant player and I like to think I played a little bit like him on offense.

Ball So Hard U. – Anthony Lazzara – 8 catches, 49 yards, 3 TDs, 1 tackle, 2 INTs

What do you think was more important to the win, your 8 catches or two interceptions?

More important to the win was none of those two. Manny scoring before the half with 1 play left to bring us within 1 and Dom getting 2 sacks on the last drive when we needed a stop was huge. I only got that last pick because Dom knocked them out of scoring range.

How long have you been playing with Joey and where does that chemistry come from?

Ive been playing football with joey since 10 years old, and joey was my qb for 2 or 3 seasons in fpf so thats pretty much where the chemistry comes from

What are your expectations for this season?

Same as every season, championship or bust
