Division A/B Regular Season Finale
This is it, the final week of the regular season. Ten games in eight weeks went by in a flash. The schedule was a disaster plain and simple. Two, or in certain cases three games in different locations in one night, having a game one week, than not having another for two weeks, I can go on. But, at the end of the day, playing some football is better than not having any at all.
For some teams, tonight and this week represent a chance to solidify their playoff positioning. For others it is a chance to play one last game or two before packing it in for the season. It is also a chance to pad stats, and get things right before the playoffs begin, because no one wants to limp or back into the dance.
Brand New Quarterback Rob Robinson showed why he is in the FPF hall of Fame, as he threw for 277 yards and seven touchdowns on 21 of 28 passing in his team’s (47-40) upset victory over the Silent Ticklers. The pivot has had some strong outings this year, but none better than this one, as he set a season-high in TD passes, QB Rating (130.5), and completion percentage (75%). He had as many incompletions as TDs (7). The only mistake he made was throwing a second half interception to Adam Rosen
The biggest beneficiary of the Robinson’s performance was Receiver Jordan Lessard, who led all players with six catches for 137 yards and three TDs. It was a breakout performance for who had zero catches coming into the contest and had played mostly on the defensive side of the ball this year.
In addition to the production, it received from Lessard, the Brand New offense looked lethal, as it also got touchdown receptions from Chis Milard, Carter Soles, Marco Bertoldi, and Darnell Kevis Riley. Soles also led the team on the other side of the ball with two interceptions from opposing Quarterback Jordan Panetta.
For the Silent Ticklers, the loss wasted a standout outing from Rosen, who while registering the interception and leading all players with five tackles, also went over the century mark as a Receiver, with four grabs for 118 yards and two touchdowns. The team would also get a pair of TDs from Vincent Dagenais as well as Daniel Mancini.
Veteran Quarterback Jeff Rosenblatt has nearly seen and done it all in this league. The one thing he hadn’t accomplished this year was throwing for more than six touchdowns in a game, until Thursday night in Brossard. The six-time All-Star did not one, but two better, as he tossed eight TDs in a (46-26) win by Thor’s Hammer over the Junkyard Dogs. Rosenblatt also flirted with perfection, going 24 of 26 for 347 yards.
The win by Thor’s Hammer wasn’t all just about the play of their Quarterback. The squad also got huge contributions from Noah Groper, James Drysdale, and Adam Rockman, as the first two recorded a pair of touchdowns (Groper also added a sack), while the latter recorded one TD and an interception.
While those performances were stellar, the best of the evening was Anthony Brisebois who led all players in yards and touchdowns with 113 and three respectively, to go along with a game-high eight tackles.
If you have been paying attention the last few years, you know the name Sean Semerjian. From Division 6, all the way to Div. A, he has made an impact. This season with Mo’ Khans, Mo’ Problems however, whether it was due to a limited number of targets, or a lack of chemistry with Quarterback Daniel Lazzara, the three-time All-Star, hasn’t been as impactful as many thought he would be.
Over the course of the last few games, Semerjian has started to heat up, as against The Apocalypse, he put up four catches for 83 yards and three touchdowns. That performance came two games after he recorded 90 yards and two TDs against the Allstars. He also has recorded two interceptions in that time frame.
Looking at the big picture, Mo’ Khans, Mo’ Problems, has gone winless in three out of their last four games. Getting the ball in Semerjian’s hands more often, could go a long way to helping reverse their fortunes with the playoffs just around the corner.
Power Rankings – Division A
Allstars (8-1) – A successful Monday night at Papineau, saw them knock off both KGP, and the Party Crashers. The Allstars wrap up the regular season with another showdown with KGP. Last Week: 1st
Party Crashers (5-4 )– They laid a beatdown on a team representing the Braves, as the real squad was in New York for a flag tournament. The Party Crashers couldn’t ride the momentum however, as they lost by two touchdowns to the Allstars a few hours later. Last Week: 2nd
Braves (5-4) – Short-handed some weeks, and a completely different team last Sunday versus KGP, didn’t stop the Braves from win, and avoiding a two-game sweep, after getting hammered by the Party Crashers earlier in the evening. Last Week: 3rd
Mo’ Khans, Mo’ Problems (4-4-1) – * My mistake for not including them in last week’s article. – This team is big on talent, but they are short on wins as their only victory over the second half of the season is over the last place The Apocalypse. To MKMP’s credit, they have come close to knocking off the Allstars (twice) and Braves in the last few weeks, as they lost those three games by a combined 12 points. Unfortunately for this team, moral victories don’t count, and close is only good in horseshoes and darts. This squad needs a win. They close the regular season with a rematch against The Apocalypse, tomorrow at Stade de Montreal, but that is anything but a guaranteed win. Can Fred Malette, AJ Gomes, and the team rally together and generate some momentum before the real season starts? We’ll find out tomorrow. Last Week: Should’ve been 4th
The Apocalypse (1-7) – Despite another loss – this time on the final play of the game – this team has been so close the last two weeks to knocking off the Allstars, Mo’ Khans, Mo’ Problems, and Braves (Twice). They are clearly snake-bitten, but they still have a chance to make the playoffs, if they beat both the Party Crashers and Mo’ Khans, Mo’ Problems, while getting help in the form of an Allstars win over KGP. Last Week: 5th
KGP (2-6-1) – They blew a huge opportunity to get two points when they lost (35-32) to a replacement Braves squad last Sunday in Laval. Going forward, for these guys it is simple, win and you’re in. The tricky part of course, is that they’re playing the top team in the division in the Allstars. Oh yeah, KGP also hasn’t won a game since June. Good luck. Last Week: 4th
Power Rankings – Division B
B-Raves (6-2) – They not only lost one, but they did it twice this past week, falling both to Touch It Catch It, and Thor’s Hammer. Both losses should have an asterisk beside them, as the regular B-Raves squad did not take the field in either defeat, as they team real squad was playing in a tournament outside the country. I wanted to put the next team on the list in this spot, but it just wouldn’t feel legit, especially since the B-raves win the first meeting (32-31) in Week 1. Hopefully, we will see them go head-to-head once again in the post-season. Despite being tied for points with the Silent Ticklers with 12, the B-Raves hold the top spot due to having allowed 21 fewer points than ST. Last Week: 1st
Thor’s Hammer (5-3) – They got the win, but through no fault of their own, it was against a substitute B-Raves team. They then turned around and blew out the Junkyard Dogs. A move one spot up the rankings seems justified. Thor’s Hammer currently sits fifth in the standings. A win and a little bit of help could see them climb as high as first. Last Week: 3rd
Brand New (5-4) – They jump one spot in the standings with a huge (47-40) win over the Silent Ticklers. Brand New has won three out of their last four games. They have a chance to make it four out of five to close the regular season if they can knock off Mangoose tonight in Lachine. Can they do it? Currently in fourth place, this team can jump as high as second in the standings. Last Week: 4th
Silent Ticklers (6-2) – They beat Mangoose, in a tougher than expected game, but fell to Brand New, the result of which sees them fall two spots in the rankings. They finish the regular season with two tough matchups, as they take on the B-Raves in a must-see game Tuesday at Loyola, and the Moretti Crime Family, Thursday in Brossard. Can the Silent Ticklers take both games? First place is still possible for this team, but they must beat the B-Raves first. Last Week: 2nd
BYOB (5-3-1) – Their last game was a (41-14) blowout loss to the B-Raves, back on July 11th. After having more than a week to get over it, BYOB has a chance to respond tonight with a big game against the Moretti Crime Family. A win here for BYOB would be huge, as it would lock them into third place, and allow them to jump as high as first, if both the B-Raves and Silent Ticklers lose. Last Week: 5th
Mangoose (2-7) – They lost by five to the Silent Ticklers, so despite a win by the next team in the rankings, Mangoose still stays in the sixth spot. A win over Brand New tonight in Lachine, would not only see them rise in the rankings, but more importantly, it would clinch a playoff berth, and see them potentially rise as high as seventh in the division. Last Week: 6th
Moretti Crime Family (4-4)– They survived a tougher than anticipated showed against Touch It Catch It. The win was important, as it gave the team two in a row, clinched a playoff spot, and guaranteed they could finish lo lower than sixth, and as high as third in the standings. The MCF finishes the regular season with games against BYOB and the Silent Ticklers, Last Week: 7th
Touch It Catch It (3-6) – They got a big victory over a replacement B-Raves team, but as the saying goes, a win is a win, and it worked out perfectly, as it essentially punched their ticket to the post-season, barring a win by Mangoose, and two by the Junkyard Dogs to close out the regular season. The Touch It Catch It loss to the Moretti Crime Family Thursday night, keeps them locked into the seven seed, unless the unthinkable happens…Last Week: 9th
Junkyard Dogs (1-6-1) – They need a prayer and Hail Mary to get into the dance, after their (50-32) loss to Thor’s Hammer Thursday night in Brossard. To be exact, they will need to beat both Thor’s Hammer and the regular B-Raves squad to get in. Good luck. Last Week: 8th
