Division 6: Second Place Ascent, Battle for Texas, and McGill Swim Team Makes Waves

This week is unique in that most of the top teams are this week. With SKOL, Free Agent Squad, Pigeons, and Demons not playing, it gives a chance to other teams to climb the standings.

Even though SKOL is off this week, the battle for second place in Group A is continuing to hear up, as both WYD Step Bro’s? and Salt’s n a Pepper who are tied with 10 points each, look to continue their entanglement as they take on the Winded Warriors and Nard Dogs.

When looking at that race, despite being tied for points, WYD Step Bro’s? holds the head-to-head advantage after beating Salt’s n a Pepper (18-13) in Week 8. The tiebreaker is huge, as the former has a game in-hand on the latter, and even if both teams win-out the rest of the way, WYD Step Bro’s? would then finish second.

It isn‘t all sunshine and flowers for WYD Step Bro’s? however, as after their game tonight versus the Winded Warriors, they then take on undefeated SKOL, and wrap up the regular season by taking on Le Speakeasy.

For Salt’s n a Pepper, their road to second is a little bit easier, as they are set to take on ALLBALL next Sunday, and then finish off with a contest against the Texas Whales on the final Sunday of the regular season. After it is all said and done, the loss in Week 8, might be the only thing that keeps Salt’s n a Pepper out of second.

The other major question hanging in the balance, is can either team catch SKOL for first? Both currently sit four points behind the Group A leader. For one team the answer is simple, as SKOL knocked off Salt’s n a Pepper (14-12) in Week 2, so with only two games remaining, that knocks them out of contention.

WYD Step Bro’s? still have a shot. Both they and SKOL have three games left, and as I said earlier, they square off next Sunday in St. Leonard. The interesting part of that showdown is the fact that SKOL faces Show Me Dem TDies one might earlier. Injuries happen, and games on back-to-back nights isn’t always easy for guys in their 30’s and 40’s. More importantly, Show Me Dem TDies is a veteran squad who are not an easy out, and they are looking to solidify their playoff spot as they are currently one point behind fourth place Le Speakeasy.

There is a battle of Texas taking place tonight, as theTex4s Chooches are set to take on the Texas Whales at 10:30PM in Laval. I will be scorekeeping the game. Both teams are fighting for their playoff lives, as the former are trying to squeak into the Division 6 side, while the latter is attempting to do the same in Division 6D.

The Texas Whales came into tonight on a four-game losing streak, and an offense that has yet to score more than two touchdowns in a single game, with the lone exception being their (21-6) victory over the winless Winded Warriors.

To get back in the win column tonight, the Texas Whales will need to avoid turnovers, as Quarterback Tyler Cousins has thrown at least one interception in every game this year. The team’s defense must also step up, as the unit has surrendered an average of eight yards per play in all five of their losses. Can they turnaround their season with a big win?

The Tex4s Chooches enter tonight’s contest with a (2-2) record over their last four games. Their two victories were of the upset variety, as they knocked off both Show Me Dem TDies and WYD Step Bro’s? They almost made it three wins, as they lost (15-12) to Towers FT, as a missed 1-point conversion and a safety on the final play of the game sealed the defeat.

Sitting with a (3-4) record, the Tex4s Chooches are playing their best football of the season. Their current stretch has a chance to continue tonight and into next week as they take on the Winded Warriors before they end the regular season with a game against SKOL.

I expect tonight’s game to be interesting. It has a lot on the line for both teams. May the best one win.

For the second time in the last three weeks, the McGill Swim Team earned another victory. After beating Mutation by forfeit in Week 8, MST, pulled off a huge upset with shocking (22-0) victory over Les Flag Daddies Wednesday night in Laval.

The team was led by their defense which pitched their first shutout of the season (They beat Mutation 30-0, but that was the automatic forfeit final score) this time the goose egg was for real. Coming up big for the McGlil Swim team was Rusher Jackson Veinot, as the rookie had a personal and game-high three sacks in the contest.

After a shaky first half that saw the offense punt twice and Quarterback Vaughn Vanslet throw two interceptions, before finding Receiver Evan Shibata for a touchdown on the last play before the break, the unit settled down in the second stanza, as Vanslet found Marcus Kulczycki and Zach Van Kuppeveld for TDs.

The McGill Swim Team defense put the nail in the coffin of their opponents, when Defense Back Keyon Cyrus, intercepted Vincent Rotari with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

The win was enormous for the McGill Swim Team, as it gave them a 4-point cushion on Les Flag Daddies for eighth place, and it put them in a tie for seventh with ALLBALL, who beat them (34-19) in Week 1. With matchups coming up against Les Super Turbo Navets next Saturday, and then the Texas Whales and Meat Fiddlers to close the regular season, MST might have just punched their ticket to the post-season.

The ALLBALL versus No Fly Zone matchup looks intriguing. The main reason I say that is because I am not sure which team will show up? Will we see the NFZ who’s offense has looked stagnant over the last few weeks as they barely got by the Nard Dogs (13-12) and only put up one touchdown in their (13-7) loss to Les Super Turbo Navets? On the flip side, their defense has looked solid all season.

The same thing applies to ALLBALL. Will we see the team that came within a touchdown of knocking off the Meat Fiddlers in Week 3, or the one that got beatdown by (31-14) by Mutation in their last outing? We will find out Monday night in St. Laurent, where I will also be the scorekeeper for that game as well.
