Division 6 Recap
Division 6, Week 4 Recap
The fourth week of Division 6 was like déjà vu all over again, concerning the similarities of last week’s Super Bowl matchup. I thought the remnants of the absolute drubbing of the Broncos to the hands of the Seahawks would be finished. Alas, I was wrong. One-sided affairs were the name of the game. Week 4 saw three games in which teams allowed six points or less. And in those three games, the margins of victory were 12, 24 and 25 points respectively. One thing is for sure, there are some stars at the quarterback position that are starting to set themselves apart from the rest of the division. Of course, as is the case in all levels of football, quarterback play, good or bad, will dictate how your team performs. I think more so in this division, if you are able to have a guy who can thread the needle on a consistent basis, it becomes a difficult proposition for the opposing team to get stops on third and fourth down. Let’s take a look at some of the key Week 4 happenings in D6.
n.W.o. Continues its hot streak
After being blown out in Week One, n.W.o have won three in a row and are making a statement in the division that they are a team to be reckoned with. Quarterback Michael Sanchez was still under centre last week and it appears as he has won the number one quarterback job. He showed solid accuracy, completing 17 of 27 passes for three touchdowns and adding 4 carries for 38 yards. His predecessor, Stephen Tirelli, had a fine game with 7 catches and 50 yards with a touchdown tacked on, showing that he can be a dangerous threat as a receiver even though he may have been supplanted at quarterback. Even more impressive were his three interceptions against Venom quarterback, Rob Tessier. The latter could not get anything going, as he was only able to score six points. Venom drops to 0-4, having only scored 18 points in four games. Their -114 point differential is last in the division. Trevin Choo-Foo has been a bright spot, however, with five sacks in four games. Meanwhile, this marks n.W.o’s third straight victory and they seem to be hitting their stride at the right time.
Making a statement
With a 26 to 12 victory, The ‘Pack are the only undefeated team in Division 6 and are leading the way with a staggering +95 point differential. Daniel Krebs continued his assault on the rest of the division with a four-touchdown performance against The Heismans. What makes Krebs so good is that he does not take sacks. Two of the three sacks he has endured, this season, came in this game. He now leads the division in passing yards (636) and touchdowns (19). His leading receiver, Andrew April, has been the biggest beneficiary of Krebs’ success, as he already has seven receiving touchdowns. The questions will soon become, not who will beat The ‘Pack, but when will they be beaten. Going by the way they are playing, I’d venture and say not anytime soon.
“Pass Rosenblatt Pass”
I’d like to make a petition to FlagPlus Football asking Run Levy Run to change their team name to Pass Rosenblatt Pass. Okay, maybe it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but still, RLR’s motto has been to let the ball fly with the quarterback Jeff Rosenblatt. Yet again, another four plus touchdown pass performance, which led his team to a 25-18 victory against Jean Guy. He has been very efficient over his last three games with 13 touchdowns, while completing over 65 percent of his passes. Rosenblatt has been a revelation this season, coming out of nowhere. In his previous two seasons, he had a combined 26 passes attempted, yet 16 receiving touchdowns. I don’t think many, including his teammates, could have envisioned him having such a great season. When you see Rosenblatt, the guy looks like a true gunslinger: big, neck-bearded dude, who wears the number 87, similarly to the NFL quarterbacks in the 1920’s who would wear wide receiver numbers. ‘Slinging’ Jeff Rosenblatt. I don’t know, it just has a nice ring to it, no?
He’s more Andrew Luck than Kyle Orton with the neck-beard and he is making a claim as the best passer in the division. I chose him as my first pick in the D6 draft (more on that shortly), and will keeping a very close eye on his production.
“Forever Young”
Matthew Young continued the trend of Week 4 stars at the quarterback position with his stellar play in a 32-6 victory against Maccabi. The Minge quarterback had five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) in what was a relatively easy victory for his team. Henri Chelhot continued his hot start, with his third straight game with two touchdown receptions on two catches, ensuring that his targets and catches are always of the clutch variety. While Young and Chelhot are leading the team offensively, this team’s identity is on the defensive side of the ball. The Minge are allowing a division-low 25 points in four games and have the second best point differential at +75. You know you have a balanced team when your quarterback can also lead the team in tackles with 10, passes deflected with four and rank second in interceptions with two. Detractors will point to their soft schedule, which has seen them play teams with a combined 5-12 record in their first four games. I am not one of them. As we know in football, more so than in any other sport, the cliché that defense wins championships is still very prevalent.
“Oh and Crushed”
The struggles continue for Orange Crush as they drop to 0-4 this season with a 25-0 loss to Golden Girls. They have only been able to score 25 points in four games and have either been shutout or scored six points in three of their four games. Quarterback Matthew Tamilia has had his trials adjusting to the league, as he’s thrown seven interceptions and only completed 31 percent of his passes. As for the rest of the game, Jason Rossie displayed solid from a passing and rushing standpoint, combining for three total touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) and Jason Kokolakis scored yet again, grabbing his fifth touchdown reception of the season. He’s as good as it gets as a red zone threat scoring three touchdowns with only four catches in his last three games.
Golden Girls runs a fairly conservative offense, which has led to only 72 passing attempts in four games, between two quarterbacks in Rossie and teammate Scott Binns. No quarterback controversy here though, as Rossie appears to have the starting quarterback position well entrenched. Still, it poses a good problem to have when you can have two players capable of playing the position. Binns has gone 12-20 for 94 yards and three touchdowns this season.
Week 4 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: Daniel Krebs. It was a struggle between Krebs and Rosenblatt, as it will be one for the entire season as both quarterbacks keep duelling for supremacy as the best passer in the league. (14-27, 179 yards, 4 touchdowns)
Defensive Player of the Week: Stephen Tirelli. Tirelli was replaced at the starting quarterback position, but in Week 4 against Venom, he had a tremendous defensive effort with two tackles, three interceptions and a pass deflection in a winning effort.
Power Rankings
1. The ‘Pack – Best offense in the league, firing on all cylinders.
2. The Minge – Best defense in the league. The offense will need to win a game eventually though, but Matthew Young is a beast.
3. Run Levy Run – Rosenblatt has been spreading the ball around with six receivers with at least one touchdown.
4. Golden Girls – Probably the most athletic team in the Division.
5. n.W.o. – Solid record at 3-1, but that minus 2 point differential is a tad suspect
6. JeanGuy – Christophe Chartrand, one of the better two-way players, has been a pleasant surprise for JeanGuy.
7. Maccabi- Have lost three in a row with offence sputtering. Alexandre Bohbot, the lone bright spot in those losses, has 4 interceptions.
8. The Heismans – Have been in games, but must get more from quarterback Stefan Fennes and the offense.
9. Orange Crush 10. Venom – Both teams are winless. Advantage to Venom whose scored more points so far this season.
Week 5 picks
So my Week 4 picks were pretty good, as I finished 4-1. I picked Orange Crush snapping their winless streak over Golden Girls incorrectly. I feel pretty good about my picks this week and we should be in for another great set of games. I am very much looking forward to watching the Run Levy Run, or as would like to call them, Pass Rosenblatt Pass (or even the Flying Rosenblatt’s) against the Minge’s terrific defense. Below are my Week 5 picks.
Run Levy Run over The Minge (Game of the Week)
n.W.o over The Heismans
Venom over Orange Crush
JeanGuy over Maccabi
The ‘Pack over Golden Girls
Division 6 Fantasy Draft
It was with great pleasure that I was asked to participate in the Division 4 and Division 6 FlagPlus Fantasy football drafts. I got the chance to meet my fellow FPF media brethren and share some laughs and some amazing Della Rocca IPA brews. The fact that there is a fantasy draft in this league shows the strength, commitment and knowledge that the media members have, but also the same attributes that the players have for the entire league. I was floored at how much the guys knew about certain players and their skills sets as well as past performances. As the new guy, I won’t make any promises as to where I will fare in the standings, but I think I held my own in the draft. Below is a chart of how the Division 6 draft unfolded.
