Division 6 Recap

Are you ready for some football? With the holidays now in the rear view mirror, and 2014 finally here, it’s time for yet another season of FlagPlus Football.

A brand New Year brings along a lot of change and excitement, and FPF is no different.

From the new player ranking system, to the new rule changes, to the return of yours truly to the FPF media roster, change is definitely in the air.

Amongst all of the aforementioned changes that the league has undergone, one of the biggest, and arguably the most important has been the debut of Division 6.

FPF’s newest Division consists of ten teams. In no particular order, here they are:

N.W.O

Venom

Golden Girls

Orange Crush

JeanGuy

Run Levy Run

The ‘Pack

The Minge

Maccabi

The Heismans

How can we expect exciting football with only ten teams? You might be asking, look no further than Division 1 who until their recent merge with Division 2, had only 6 teams.

Under Review

In this section, I will take a look at some of the games, performances, and trends that caught my attention during the week.

  • Pride and Penalties: The game between JeanGuys and the Orange Crush saw a lot of chippy play and trash talking going on between both teams.  Twice during the game, things became physical between the two teams. After multiple warnings FPF head referee Leo Gervais had to call the game early.

While football is a physical sport and trash talking comes with the territory, there’s no room for some of the foolishness that transpired in this game.

It should go without saying that taking dumb penalties certainly doesn’t help your team. At the end of the day everybody pays money to play in this league, if you are going to cheat yourselves and your team by getting kicked out of the game or by having your game come to a premature finish, do everyone a favour and don’t bother showing up.

Trash talking can be annoying especially when you find yourself on the losing side. If you don’t want to hear it, the best way to silence your opponent is to beat them….

  • The Wildcat!!!!!!!: I was thrilled to hear that the Wildcat has finally made its way to FPF. Thank you N.W.O for giving us your best imitation of the N.Y Jets.  They even have a QB with the last name Sanchez!!!! I swear I’m not making this up. If you guys can find a way to sign Teeeeeeebow even for one game, (he wouldn’t even have to play, he could just make a cameo) I would vote to induct the entire team into the FPF Hall of Fame IMMEDIATELY.

  •  In a totally unrelated note, I was a huge wrestling fan growing up. (No I didn’t sell out. As I’ve gotten older, priorities change, and the lack of a consistently good, and in some instances watchable product the last couple of years has lessened my interest a little.) I loved the New World Order! What wrestling fan didn’t? If you haven’t seen these guys play, (admittedly I didn’t get a chance to see them in Week 1, but I caught a lot of their games in the Spring Season) they are a hard working team that made a bunch of changes to strengthen their roster this season. The N.W.O AND THE Wildcat, I think I just found my sentimental favourite to win the whole thing. My advice to you Rob, is be prepared to buy a new championship trophy if the N.W.O do indeed end up as D6 champs…(DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU)

  • Blowouts: Five games, five blowouts. Yes it was only Week 1, but each game is important, and it seemed like a couple of teams were still in scrimmage mode to kick off the regular season.

  • The Number 6: Speaking of blowouts, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages, I think we witnessed history. As I mentioned in the above paragraph, every Week 1 game ended in a lopsided score.  While yes there have been blowouts in FPF before, and there will undoubtedly be more in the future, what makes this week’s special is the trend in each game. Each team that came out on the losing end of their respective contest scored exactly 6 points.  Take a pic, put it on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or simply on your fridge, because I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like this EVER again!

Players of the Week

Since we here at FPF have a game of the week, why not have players of the week too? While the Weekly Leaders area on the right hand side of each Division’s page is nice, I think that naming a player of the week is something players might appreciate more.

QB

Ofir Levy – Maccabi

14- 22/ 199 yds/ 6TDs

While a lot of QBs put up big numbers, Levy out did his counterparts by throwing for a Division high 6 TDs. He also added in 24 yards on the ground on 3 carries.

WR

Emmanuel Cohen – Maccabi

3 rec/68 yds/2 TDs

This one was close as the Golden Girls’ Jason Kokolakis also put up some strong numbers, but the edge goes to Cohen because of the yard deferential (68 to 57), and the yards per catch (nearly 22.7 to 19). Either way, good job gentlemen.

Defensive

Henri Chelot – The Minge

3 Sacks/ 4 tackles/ 1 PD

This one was also extremely close, as the Golden Girls’ Julien Lefebvre had an impressive performance as well with 1 tackle, 3 passes defended, and a pick six.

Besides the 3 sacks, the other reason Chelot got the nod was because of the effect he had on his team’s defense. Anyone that knows anything about football, be it flag or not, knows that the secondary relies on pressure being provided up front. The Minge two-way player Matthew Young had 2 interceptions. Need I say more?

Picks

This is pretty self-explanatory, although I must admit; this is my favourite part of the article.

(Just for the record, I started writing this article before the Run Levy Run/Maccabi and Golden Girls/JeanGuy games started. For the purpose giving honest predictions, I stayed away from the results

Run Levy Run vs Maccabi – Maccabi

Orange Crush vs N.W.O – Orange Crush

The ‘Pack vs Venom – The ‘Pack

The Heismans vs The Minge – The Minge

Golden Girls vs JeanGuy – Golden Girls

That’s it for this week. I will be back next week with a look at this week’s games, as well as all the happenings from around Division 6.
