Division 6 Preview
Welcome to the first FlagPlus Football Division 6 article of 2017. Before we kick things off, let me say Happy New Year! My name is Brent Bodkin, and I will be writing the weekly articles for you guys this season.
For all the returning teams, let me be the first to say welcome back!
To all the first-year squads, welcome to FlagPlus Football! Whether you heard about the league through a friend, family member, Facebook, or by watching the videos on our YouTube channel, let me tell you, that FPF is full of talented players.
Whether you’ve played high school, college, university, or just simply with friends, the games are full of action, big plays, fun, and the compete level of all the teams is always high. Whether you’re playing for the first time, trying to stay in shape during the off-season, or simply doing it for the love of the game, you’ll realize fast that this is the place to be when it comes to flag football.
What makes Div. 6 so unique you might be asking yourself, it’s that this is pretty much the only division where you get a real mix of different players from different backgrounds and football experience.
For you guys that are new to this, or for those who need a quick refresher, let me give you a quick break down of what to expect from my weekly article. I will start by talking about a couple of things that caught my eye during the previous week’s action.
I’ll also be bringing back my ever-popular Top 3 and Step It Up sections. Yes, in case you were wondering, my Honorable Mention feature will be back as well, for performances that just missed the cut.
To be fair, there is another side to the equation. That aforementioned side, deals with 3 players and/or teams that need to step up their game. How does one qualify? Dropping a ton of passes, giving up a ton of rushing yards defensively, or throwing more, or close to as many interceptions as completions, will get you a prime spot on the list.
The Matchups section will be back as well. Whether it’s a player versus a player, or team against team, if it’s must-watch action, it will be broken down in that part of the article.
Finally, what football column would be complete without picks? You’ll have my choice for each and every game throughout the season.
Now on to more pressing matters…
There are plenty of changes in Div. 6 this season. The first of which, is the amount of teams in the division this year. Last winter we had 20, this year for the first time ever, we have a record 30 teams, with more than 15 brand new ones. Those two facts speak to the level of competition, as well as the popularity of the league.
Due to the amount of teams, Division 6 will now consist of 3 sub-divisions within Conference A and B. The East, West, and Central division will now makeup D6.
Serious question. Will there be a harder Division than the Conference B’s Central?
Another change since last season, is from last year’s champs. After winning the D6 championship as PB N’ Jelly, the team will now be called the Mogadishu Pirates. The team’s All-Star Quarterback Joseph Kano, will also be switching positions this year as well, due to his QB rating being too high (70) to throw in D6.
The SPARTANS, along with Tip Top Shape, SABRFC, TDs and Beer, and the Diablos, all signature D6 teams over the last few seasons, have all finally made the jump up to a higher division.
On the flip side, teams like the Bruins, and Dez Nuts (formerly BMS Goats) dropped down to Division 6.
Since we haven’t played any games yet, like my 49ers choosing Trent Baalke over Jim Harbaugh (no, I am STILL not over that. Can you blame me?) it doesn’t make any sense to make picks, especially since there are so many teams that haven’t even played their first FPF game yet.
Since there are still some teams that we do recognize, I will give you guys my second Top 10 pre-season power rankings. Yes, my first edition was unveiled in Simon’s League Wide Power Ranking Edition, but after some more thought, and the realization that I slept on Pardon My Swag, and that the Mogadishu Pirates will be breaking in a new QB, I am revising my list. Just to be clear, there is HUUUUUGE chance I’ll be dead wrong on these predictions as well, as injuries, the unknown (the aforementioned new teams) and surprises (both good and bad) pop up every year, but nonetheless, here I go…
- Smokin Axolotls (9-1)
- Ravens (8-2)
- Pardon My Swag (7-3)
- N.W.O (7-3)
- One Speed: Power (7-3)
- Super Troopers (6-4)
- Warriors (6-4)
- Rolling Rock (6-4)
- DezNuts (5-5)
- Victorious Secret (4-6)
That’s it for this week guys. I’ll be back next time with a break down of all the Week 1 action, and a preview of the Week 2 slate of games. Thanks for taking the time to read the article.
With 1 more day left before the season begins, the only question that needs to be asked is, are you ready for some football?
