Division 5A: Week 12, A look at the Playoff-Race and the Best of the Week
First of all, welcome back. Second of all, you’re welcome. As you’ve surely seen, it’s now finally MUCH easier to see who’s in and out of the playoffs, as seen in the Overall Standings tab in both 5A and 5B, without the Divisional groups separating teams. With the playoff picture much clearer, let’s take a look at who’s clinched a ticket the big dance.
Division 5A Clinched Playoff Teams ✅
As of 4pm Saturday March 25th
- Big Fat Bats
- No Friend Zone
- Ballers
- West Island Boys
- Red “Not” Skins
- The Process
- Rico Ryders
- Save The Turftles
- Menace II Sobriety
- Practice Squad (5)
Division 5A Officially Eliminated Teams ❌
No one is out of the race so far. Even Le Speakeasy and Glory Boyz, sitting with just 1 win on the season are still alive in Week 12.
Division 5A – Week 11 Highlights
- Red ”Not” Skins had 2 “prove it” games and came up short on both. They lost to Ballers on the 2nd to last play of the game as Olivier Choquette‘s only grab of the game ended up being the game-winning TD while the Skins defense could not stop Danick Coulombe, with 3 TD’s on the night.
- With a chance to redeem their Saturday night loss, Ryan Dobbs-Garnett chewed up their defense, completing 66% of his passes for 188 passing yards and 5 TDs. On the other end, Mat Kieljan struggles are continuing, as he was picked off 4 times by the MIIS defense, which is very likely Manu Allard-Roy will be able to be a full-timer and get the 5 games played to be part of their playoff roster.
- It appears that Max Marini was injured early in this game while the game was still close, 13-6 for WIB. Add James Hamilton to the list of receivers who can now appreciate how hard the QB position is.
- WIB have won 4 of their last 5 matchups, with 1 bye week and 1 last game against Tip Top Shape.
- It is official; Clinkers are using the IR rule and Marc-André Desaulniers‘s games played are being transferred over to Kris Verreault.
- Save The Turftles, at the expense of The Tokyo Sandblasters run for the playoffs, broke their 4-game losing streak to win their first game since January 28th! They went almost 2 months (51 days to be exact) between victories.
- Tip Top Shape tried their best to get a rusher to contain Noah Groper. Running 6 times for a drives-length of yards (44)… yeah, they didn’t get a rusher🥲.
- No Friend Zone blew out Practice Squad (5). The stat in this one… Marc Antoine Martin threw more picks than yours truly threw TDs. Another “Yikes”… Jerome Hovington was the largest beneficiary with 3 INTs and 1 PD on the night.
A Look into Week 12 🔮
- Ice up have got a double-header against Red ”Not” Skins and Ballers and will want to avoid losing 5 straight to end their season.
- Le Speakeasy are the most interesting lowest seed team in terms of the number of games they have remaining. With only 1 win, they need all 3 wins for the best shot at making it in. They play 3 games in the span of 7 days. 2 wins gets them in the tiebreaker conversation. Facing a much stronger Menace II Sobriety squad, Backwoods Football Club and Him University. They could squeak out the 2 wins in their last 2 matchups, but that’s the best I’ll give them.
- Rico Ryders will give their best shot at taking down the undefeated Big Fat Bats, Monday in St-Laurent as BFB look to go for the perfect 10-0 season.
- A couple of 5 win teams do battle, as The Process will test their skills out on Save The Turftles. It’s interesting because if The Process win, these 2 teams COULD meet in the 1st round of the playoffs.
- Tip Top Shape do battle against Les Petites Carottes, as both teams currently sit with 4 points and 2 games remaining. A loss could spell the end for either team.
Trophy Talk 🏆
- The QBOY award is a fascinating race. Zack Stacey has been on a absolute tear since Feb 6th, throwing 29 TDs and just 1 INT. He’s now reached 44 passing TDs plus 2 rushing TDs for 46 scores on the year, 1705 yards of offense (1588 through the air, 117 yards on the ground) and 3 INTs. Mathew Zeppetelli will need a big game against Rico Ryders, as he’s totaled 3 less TDs (43 TDs – 40 Passing, 3 Rushing), but more yardage than Stacey (just under 1800 – 1601 Passing, 193 Rushing). Just the fact there are 3 QBs with a passer rating of 123 or more is just a testament to the great QBs and receivers there are in Div 5A this year.
- Amongst the Top 5 WRs in TDs, looking at their past 10-game regular seasons (Winter and Spring), we’ve gotten career years out of Felix Boutet (still 2 games remaining with Dime and Bougie), Skylar Bayliff (18 TDs), AJ Zeppetelli (17 TDs) and even Luis Begin is 1 TD away from breaking his own personal record of 20 TDs with Clinkers in the Spring of 2018. Who will win receiver of the year?
- Depending on who wins receiver or 2-way player of the year (so taking names like Skylar Bayliff and Luis Begin out for now), I think defensive player of the year will come down between Tony Vo (and his 20 sacks currently) and Guillaume Fontaine (8 INTs). Of course, if Skylar or Begin don’t win either of the 2 aforementioned awards, then they have an equal shot a DPOY.
