Diablos Burning Down the Division

Peeze’s Playbook

Week 7

As it turns out, you can’t call Nez Rouge in the summer time. After a late night at Commicon I needed to take a taxi home as my vehicle suffered from an operational error (as the operator was not able to drive the vehicle). Whilst in the Taxi the driver spent the entire time complaining that the government needed to intervene and shut down Uber.

She indicated that Montreal Taxi drivers should revolt and even insinuated that Montreal cabbies should undertake terrorist action. This conversation then led somehow to her belief that something called Nutflix (I imagine she meant Netflix) was ruining our planet.

This led me to think about that concept for a while. Imagine that the established teams who no longer are the head of the pack needed FPF administrative intervention to stay competitive. There are teams who no longer lead their respective divisions as new teams enter the league with unknown commodities at various positions and with a wealth of untapped talent. Luckily, there is no truer free economy than FPF. The only way to stay relevant is to stay in a constant state of evolution. The best teams in FPF get it. It excites me to think of what this league has in store for the future.

I Am Vengeance, I Am The Night…

As I am a huge comic book fan, I have no shortage of Batman references. Likewise, I am thrilled to see the Gotham Knigts winning results on most weeks. This week they beat the Hot Boys Hotline by a score of 28-18 and I could not help but feel like justice had been served (Come on Eagle’s white tights could not go unpunished). Despite the rush of Malcolm Archer, Chris Rivest was himself, moving around in the pocket and making plays. The offense ran through two of Rivest favorite targets as Alexandre Provencher-Rivest and Mikey Candussi scored 2 touchdowns a piece. The defense stood tall as well as this group of ball hawks intercepted three passes (courtesy of Guillaume Boismenus D’Amour, Mikey Candusi and Jean-Benout Bourassa).

Hot Boys Hotline has struggled to score points all season. This game was no exception. For the sixth straight week Hot Boys Hotline scored 3 touchdown or less. I had stated on several podcasts that their lack of scoring would catch up with them. Tom Gatehouse has thrown multiple interceptions in 5 games. Moreover, he has not had a game without an interception. Tyler Keating and Bryden Streeter where very important keys on offense this week but Hot Boys Hotline will need to get better production out of the most important position or they may see their season end as Hot Boys Flat Line.

War of Attrition

For all but one game quarterback Jean Lussier has led the Alpha T’s out of the metaphorical tunnel. The notable exception was this week when they took on the undefeated juggernaught in the divison (Warhawks). However, Joell Houle looked as good as Lucier has throughout the season. He even led the team into halftime with a 20-18 lead. I struggled before ultimately choosing the Warhawks in my prediction last week. I did feel this game would be close and I was rewarded for my faith. Jesse Dupuis is not a household name and we have ignored him for much of the season. He had 3 touchdowns and that brings his season total to 15. Overall this was exactly the type of game I expected from the Alpha T’s.

While the Alpha T’s did play step for step with the Warhawks, there truly was no accounting for experience. Alexandre Poulin-Rioux has also made his case for an up and coming star in this league. He caught 4 touchdowns to double his output on the season. Quarterback Fred Malette made a mistake as well but in the end the it would not affect the Warhawks as they would eventually win this game by a score of 36-33. This game also featured Malette’s lowest completion percentage. However, considering that he completed 60% of his passes, I would not consider it cause for concern.

Playoff Rankings

These rankings come to you by virtue of Simon Dagenais (@DagenaisFPF). It has been fun ripping him in past seasons. However, in recent seasons his work has been among the best in FPF Media circles. His ability to throw a decent pass, avoid throwing to the other team, or beat any of my teams can be highly criticized however. So, I will continue to make fun of him at every opportunity.

Power Rankings

There is quite some movement this week and I think it speaks volumes about our division. Teams have slid up and down the rankings as I am still struggling to figure out who the true elite teams of this division is. Feel free to send me your input by tweeting me @PeezeFPF.

  1. Warhawks (7-0)-Another week, another win. For the past few weeks, my power rankings have just been how to rank 9 other teams after the Warhawks. This week is no different.

  1. 5 Star Prospects (6-1)- 5 Star Prospects are the hottest team in the division this season. The have won five straight games and are not looking back.

  1. Formerly Formerly Formerly Teamless (6-1)- FFFT looked very good at every aspect of the game. They moved the chains well, Jon Brown looked great when throwing the long ball. Most importantly the redzone defense has been stifling.

  1. Tyrants (5-2)- With all the attention going toward Phil De Kovachich, it seems that defences are forgetting about Chris Kaliotzakis. He is quietly having a great season. With three more touchdowns he will tie his career high in touchdowns.

  1. Backyard Bullies(6-1)- The Bullies have Les Aigles coming up but end the season against Warhawks and Tomahawk Nightmare. It’s an unbalanced schedule but they do have a chance to prove their worth towards the end of the season.

  1. D’s Nuts (5-2)- D’s Nuts jump up two spots after beating Jagerbomb. Heading into this game, I felt that if D’s Nuts won this game then it would propel them uoward through the rankings. However, the game itself was uglier then a 14th tequila shot. Team quarterback Dave Daoust was visibly upset after this game. They will need to play better if they want to be considered a top tier team.

  1. The Alpha T’s (3-4)- It is rare for a team to move up in the power rankings after a loss. It is even stranger for teams to make the power rankings with a losing record. However, I am really impressed with this team and having lost to an undefeated team by the smallest margin this season. In itself, it is a moral victory since I do not know if Warhawks would win the second time they faced off against each other.

  1. Diablos (4-3)- Now that Diablos won 3 of their last 4 games and have looked like a different team since the return of Gab Wiseman. They have been one of the divisions best teams in past weeks.

  1. Jagerbomb (5-2)- Perhaps I’m overreacting a little but my heart has been broken before (seriously, The Green Mile can mess a dude up!) and as such I am protective over my feelings these days. It seems as though good rushers can really disrupt Simon Duchesne’s offense. That can be a problematic against the better teams in this division.

Other Teams Receiving Votes

This week I was a little pressed for time. As such I only had time to discuss these other teams with the Eagle at Master Control. He casted one vote; I was very disappointed. Feel free to tell him what’s what by tweeting him @EagleFPF.

  • Gotham Knights (4-3)- The Gotham Knights have games where they look like the real deal and sometimes they appear as though the kind of team that will only beat who they are supposed to but will struggle when they play against more athletic teams.

  • Tomahawk Nightmare (4-3)-There is some controversy surrounding their last loss as the Junkyard Dogs may have fielded a roster with a player who was potentially ineligible. However, even if this result is reversed, I am not thrilled by Tomahawk’s lackluster performance this season.

  • BronxBombers (4-3)- Thomas Zorko has been leading the defense and his 10 sacks has put them in position to win each week. However, they haven’t won each week and I still am having trouble getting a feel for this team.

  • Les Affreux (4-3)- They have lost 2 in a row. Once and a while FPF franchises grow stale and struggle to recapture their identity and return to better days. I hope that this isn’t the case. If they win their next three games they can

  • Hot Boys Hotline (4-3)- I told you that Eagle had a vote. It should be painfully obvious for whom his vote was cast.

Hung-over Visions of the World of Tomorrow

The jostling for position continues between Mathieu Domon and I. He has taken a two-point lead late in the season. He predicted that the SMYTD’s game ends in a tie. He has also stipulated that if he’s right everyone owe’s him a beer. I instead will offer him a chance at double or nothing; I can use a 6 pack. Feel free to tweet Mat Domon with #DoubleOrNothing by tweeting him @MathieuDomonFPF.
