D3 Stew: The Madden Curse Strikes Back
D3 Stew: Week 1
Week 1 is in the books and the fallout from my preseason article has all but settled. While some of my picks were well received, others proved to be somewhat controversial. Only time will tell as to the efficacy of them all, but I have to say that I’m already proud to be covering this division.
There’s so much character within these 20 teams that it’s bound to be an exciting year. Teams that were discredited emerged with a resounding pulse, while others that were expected to cruise were quickly given pause. Every team has so much pride in their teammates that it will be nearly impossible to predict the outcome of games this season. For that reason, I’ll be happy with anything above 50%.
I have so much content to share with you below that I won’t bog you down with a long, protracted intro this week. Take a look below to get a feeling of the format you should expect going forward.
I’m already excited to see what transpires in week 2 action. Luckily for me it’s only a few hours away.
Thanks for making this the best division to cover this winter.
There’s three types of people in this world.
Those who ask, what happened?
Those who saw what happened.
And those who made it happen.
Which one are you?
By the Numbers
- The average margin of victory this week was 21.75 points. That’s over 3 touchdowns in favor of the victors! Safe to say there were some lopsided blowouts as teams get adjusted to their new rosters and the elevated competition of the division.
- Conference A, the so-called “conference of death,” put up a paltry 3 wins combined in week 1.
- 3 teams scored under 10 points on offense this week, and they aren’t the teams you would have expected. Bearskins, ODBs and Darksiders should go back to the drawing board and make adjustments, quickly.
- Jad Aridi led the division in usage rate this week, reeling in 10 of his QB’s 28 passing attempts for a whopping 36%. We figured that the R4D offense would largely roll through Jad this year, but this was just a one man show.
- Next up on the list this of sweaty targets this week were two opponents from the same game. Alexandre Noel of JYD had a 29% share of his team’s passes go his way, while Daniel Mancini of DTM wasn’t far off at 27%. Talk about putting in work.
- Mario Porreca led all QBs with 17.2 yards per pass this week, while Joey Taylor was second from the bottom with 7. Both QBs threw for 6 TDs and 0 INTs, proving that there are many different ways to succeed at QB in FPF. The good ones know how to get it done.
- Rob Allen must like doing things in doubles, as he registered 2 TDs, 2 INTs and 2 PDs in this week’s win over Bearskins. He was the only player to put up multiple scores on offense and multiple takeaways on defense.
Around the Division
- The first game of the season was a barn burner, as Drop the Mic and Junkyard Dogs erupted to a 38-38 tie. Alex Pilon made light work of the JYD defense, as he took two 1 yard hitches and eluded the entire defense. This isn’t the last time we’ll hear that about him this season.
- Kendal Mayers was a great last minute acquisition for the Dirty Dawgs. He brings some much needed experience and depth to this roster on both sides of the ball.
- AJ Gomes of Hometown Heroes was suspended for 1 game for his part in a late game fracas involving opposing players and referees this past week. His presence will be missed for his upstart squad taking on a grumpy R4D team looking to redeem itself after a week 1 loss.
- Darksiders looked flat in a devastating loss to Maloudes this past week, but offseason acquisitions Alexandre Jubinville and Alexis Bessette were both missing for this game. Once this team is whole they should get back on track in a hurry.
Headlines
QB Movement Rolls on LGM
“I’m going to dominate this division and catch 20 passes per game.”
– Adrian Kellman on his arrival in div 3; as per Moe Khan.
QB Movement made their much anticipated FPF debut on Wednesday night at Hebert vs an LGM team looking to make an impact with a new gunslinger in town.
The game began with the veteran Alex Lever calmly carving up the raw QBM defense, capped off with a TD to Robbie Desjean in the back of the endzone.
Legendary Vanier alumni Myles Gibbon took the field looking to respond, but struggled to find his rhythm on the first drive of the season, having the ball bounce off the hands of Kenny Charles before getting picked off by Guillaume Caron.
Lever followed up with a huge conversion on third and long to Mathieu Gratton on a deep dig route, before hitting him on the slant on the next play for the TD.
Down 12-0 early, Gibbon remained poised and marched the field. After a wide open TD dropped by Lucson Pierre put QBM in a precarious third and long situation, Adrian Kellman chose to begin making his impact on the game. All it took was a quick jab from Moe Khan on the sideline: “zero catches, bro” to get Kellman going. Lined up at right wide, he nodded to us and replied: “watch this” before reeling in a 20 yard post route downfield for the score. Besides being a pretty bad ass thing to do, it was at this moment that we began to realize that we’d be witnessing the Adrian Kellman show in the second half. Little did we know, we wouldn’t need to wait until the second…
With less than 5 plays remaining, the always cool headed Lever promptly took the field and hit Maxime Chateauneuf on a 40 bomb on the first pass. LGM were going to make QBM earn their comeback.
Gibbon used a few plays to position his team at midfield for the last play of the half. He looked off left before putting a perfectly placed jump ball down the right sideline. Kellman went up over two defenders like he was collecting the mail and pulled down the pass for the score. Another extra point convert by Kellman made it 18-14 LGM at the half, with QBM starting with the ball coming out of the break.
Myles Gibbon started cooking in the backfield in the second half. His athleticism was on full display as he consistently shook the rush with ease and ran for conversions when needed. He capped off the drive by hitting Yohan Miron on the out route for the score.
Lever wouldn’t relent, leading Desjean with a deep ball down the sidelines. Robbie put on his best Randy Moss impersonation and went up for the big man catch in coverage. He secured the ball in mid-air and came down with the lead for his team.
A punt by QBM on the following drive gave LGM a chance to take the driver’s seat in the game. It was now Jerome Tanguay Coulombe’s turn to shine, as he took a 7 yard hook from lever and turned it into a huge gain, setting up his team in the redzone. Lever rewarded him by hitting him on the following pass for the score. 30 – 21 LGM.
Needing to get creative at this point, Gibbon sent his snapper downfield and hit him for a chunk of yards. Finding some success over the middle, he went back to Sonny Elias on the next pass for the TD. QMB were now within 1 score, but with just 5 plays to go and LGM with the ball things looked bleak.
Fortune would favor QBM on this night however, as Lever’s routine 5 yard hook on first down slipped through the hands of Antoine Martineau, and was gratefully picked off by Ofir Levy, setting his team up in the redzone for the win.
There was little doubt where Gibbon would go on the following play, as he flipped another touch pass to the back right corner of the endzone in the direction of an always hungry Kellman. Like he did at the end of the half, Kellman out muscled the defenders around him and came up with the shocking go-ahead score.
With few plays to go, Lever cut the field down but was forced to throw into coverage on the final play of the game, which was picked off for the win by the man of the hour, Adrian Kellman.
It was an emotional win that sets the ball rolling for a promising QBM team, poised to make some noise in this division. They will have their first true test coming up next week, with a matchup against an experienced Top Sauce team looking to take care of business as usual.
After a heartbreaking loss LGM head into an uphill battle against a confident Maloudes team, fresh off a beat down over the flat Darksiders.
Purple Reign & Lightweight make amends
Purple Reign took on Lightweight at Hebert this past Sunday in a game that figured to be a good old fashioned offensive throw down. While neither defense was particularly stifling, both offenses were a bit rusty in their first showing of the year, with several new pieces still being fit into place. The end result was a gentleman’s draw 26-26, neither to the delight nor the dismay of either side.
Frankie “Shovels” Deslauriers continues to defy father time, with 8 catches for 64 yards and a 2 TDs on offense, coupled with a big INT on defense to end the first half. He’s seen a resurgence in recent seasons as a premier threat on offense, and figures to have a major imprint on the direction of this team once again. “Dangerous” Danny D’Amour made a triumphant return wearing purple, leading the team with 7 catches for 75 yards and 2 TDs. Joel Malkin had a solid return to the Mayhem franchise as well, with 40 receiving yards and a clutch 2nd half INT on defense.
The new additions paid off handsomely for Lightweight in this game. Signed in the final hours of preseason to replace a departed Francois Raymond, Hainsley Adams demonstrated his game breaking receiving ability, with 5 catches for 97 yards and 2 TDs. He was simply uncontainable in this one and should continue to mesh well with Simon’s aggressive, downfield style of play. The hero of this game was undoubtedly Eddy Lee. Despite delaying his receiving debut by subbing in at snapper, he made two critical defensive plays to set his team up for success. The first was a key fourth down PAT in the endzone on the opening drive. The second was a spectacular game-saving INT with 3 plays to go and the opposition threatening in the redzone, in which he dove full extension to steal the pass from an open Terry Tam. Lightweight will be able to mitigate the loss of Raymond with solid additions of Adams and defensive stalwart Marc-Andre Lapointe.
Purple Reign have a date with powerhouse Dad Bods next week, which should be an interesting early season litmus test for conference A. Lightweight take on their now distant cousins Darksiders in a match featuring two of the slowest men in FPF #Dag&Peeze.
Hometown Heroes deliver the Madden Curse to Brotherhood
Courtesy of the legendary Carmine Pollice, no other caption so accurately sums up the sentiments of this game than the one above.
Perhaps it was a bit hasty to anoint the Brotherhood with an undefeated, championship season cover before a single pass was ever thrown in 2018. But hey, judging by their track record of success and the otherworldly talent on their roster, it’s fair to say that worse predictions have been made in sports history.
Still, there’s no getting around the fact that what happened on Sunday in Hebert was a complete shock to the system. As an analyst of this division I’m both humbled but also love the result. It completely turns the narrative of the division on its head, and promises that we’ll be in for an exciting season with lots of surprises.
2017 D4B QBOY Erminio Iadeluca was razor sharp in this game, making quick reads and throwing with confidence into the teeth of the defense. We witnessed ball distribution at its finest, with Iadeluca throwing his 7 TDs to 7 different receivers! That sort of confidence in your roster does not go unnoticed, and it’s the reason why he’s such a respected veteran in this league. You can read more on his big night below in the weekly awards section.
Of the 7 wealthy receivers, Alex Manseau came away with the biggest spoils, reeling in 3 catches for 76 yards and a score. Domenic Benevento contributed to the cause with another 5 catches for 30 yards and a score. On defense, Hometown Heroes put on a stout performance, creating turnovers, sacks, and even scoring points.
Emile Amyot was the star of the show with 2 INTs, including a pick 6. He was an underrated defensive asset for the Championship Commission team this past spring, and now fly’s under the radar as a stalwart on his new squad. Brandon St. Jacques- Turpin was one of the unsung heroes in this game, flying around the field and breaking up two passes, but disrupting several more. Speaking of disruption, Jimmy Marneris did an excellent job containing Theo Ojeaha, and preventing him from gaining any true rhythm in his throws. This was a tall task for a rusher with only 1 year of experience under his belt, but he handled himself like a savvy veteran and can now say he disrupted one of the most agile players in all of FPF.
On the Brotherhood side the story was almost entirely different. Missing their top 2WAY player in Jamal Gittens, Brotherhood still fielded a roster that on paper should have won with ease. Ojeaha had one of his worst games as a QB, throwing for under 50% completion and piling on 3 INTs in the loss. He just could never get going in this game, with errant passes and difficulty reading the field. Apart from a quietly nice game from Quaysie Gordon-Maule, who had 4 catches for 71 yards, the only real highlight for Brotherhood was the return of Omar Jackson on the field. He made his presence felt late in the game with a beautiful jump ball catch in the back of the endzone, where he went up over several defenders and reeled in the ball at its high point. Just to prove that he’s back in shape he did the exact same thing again on the following convert.
More concerning than the loss for Brotherhood on this night was the injury to their rusher Elijah Suyat, who tore his Achilles in the encounter. On behalf of the division, I’d like to wish him a speedy and full recovery, and hope to see him back on the field in the near future.
I thoroughly believe that losing this game will help The Brotherhood in the long run this year. Other than show them where their potential vulnerabilities may be, with ample time for correction, the loss also takes a lot of the hype off their backs and allows them to focus on getting better each week on route to the playoffs. This team has a championship mindset, and would easily give up the title of regular season leader for playoff champion.
They’ll have the chance to get right back on track this week against a strong 2HD team. As for Hometown Heroes, they’ll have the opportunity to prove that they’re the real deal against a feisty R4D team.
Dad Bods Crack Down on Looney Groonz
The new look Looney Goonz showed up primed and ready to take on powerhouse Dad Bod’s on Wednesday night at Hebert. With a fairly large roster comprised of a few new faces, it seemed likely that the Goonz would be in for a learning experience in the hour ahead.
Sean Avraam was in control of this game from the start, scoring on three straight drives to begin the game before throwing his first incompletion. He cruised along to an 80% completion rate with 191 yards and 5 TDs. His only blemish of the night was an INT to Maxime De Falcis on a jumped slant route in the second half.
The Dad Bods offense was humming, with the wealth being spread around evenly. Jordan Allard picked right back up where he left off from his spring div C WROY season, connecting with Avraam for 85 yards and 2 TDs on 5 catches. Alex Moreau was a reliable safety blanket on the outside, collecting 5 catches for 38 yards and a TD. Most of his catches were first down conversions, showing the trust that he’s gained on this roster from last year.
On defense it was largely the Steve Sanner and Vinny Gualano show, as they effectively patrolled the deep secondary and combined for 9 tackles, 1 INT and 2 PDs. Mike Zenobi answered the early questions about the rusher position on this team, and looked great in his first game back in FPF in 3 years. He recorded his first sack of the season, and his constant pressure was largely responsible for the high number of incompletions from the Goonz offense.
The Goonz can definitely said to be a work in progress at this point. They showed some promise in this game, and bring a genuine good natured spirit to the field which is greatly appreciated. Vincent Richard looked decent in his first game at pivot for this team. He often used his agility to buy time in the backfield before looking for holes in the short-to-intermediate level of the field. His accuracy was off on this night, completely only 54% of his passes, but that can be attributed to building chemistry on the fly with new receivers. He seems like a smart QB who knows what he does well and also understands his limitations. He will just need a few weeks to implement his system and this offense should start looking formidable.
Sebastien Simon is the heart of this team. He put the team on his back at certain points in the game when needed most, finishing with 4 catches for 37 yards and 1 TD. Nicolas Desjardins also contributed on offense, with 29 yards and 1 TD on 5 catches. On defense I was very impressed with the play of Maxime De Falcis. He was flying around the field and has a great nose for the ball. In addition to the aforementioned INT, he also had 5 tackles and was a fraction off from making several big plays in this game. Keep an eye out for him as the season progresses.
Things don’t necessarily get any easier for Looney Goonz this week, as they take on an angry Bearskins team that was just embarrassed by Top Sauce in week 1. As for Dad Bods, they’ll get a nice tune up game vs Purple Reign after the relatively easy win.
Power Rankings
The tough thing about preseason projections is that they are purely speculative. Any data used to form an opinion is by now old and dusty. Like any good machine, give me some fresh data and I’ll cook you up a beautiful list. This one will be a bit bumpy for the first few weeks while we see who’s who in the division. For the time being, here’s your first div 3 power ranking for 2018:
- Dad Bods (1-0): They had a nice warmup game against Looney Goonz, working out the kinks and getting the blood flowing. In a division with so much volatility they represent the gold standard right now. They’re the type of team that’s going to show up and make you beat them. No freebies here.
- Laval’s Finest (1-0): They handled Dirty Dawgs without breaking a sweat, but that was to be expected. I’m interested in seeing how the defense holds up when Porreca and Pilon come to town this week.
- Top Sauce (1-0): A shutout is always a strong statement, especially when it’s against an experienced team like the Bearskins. Is this version of Top Sauce with Rob Allen a legit top 3 contender? It’s still too early to tell. Another dominant performance against a hungry QB Movement team will definitely keep the arrows trending upwards.
- 2HD (1-0): We won’t give them too much credit for smashing a somewhat soft ODB team. Still, this is a similar enough roster to the one that went 10-0 in div 3 last winter. They’ll look to make their first real statement against the suddenly questionable Brotherhood team this week.
- Brotherhood (0-1): Their blowout loss was the shocker special of the week. Okay, take a deep breath, and reset. I’m not panicking. These guys are just too experienced and too good to be down for long. I’m holding my high priced shares for now, even with a tough game against 2HD on tap this week.
- Les Maloudes (1-0): They crushed an outmatched Darksiders team this week in their div 3 debut. Already trending up, they have another favorable matchup coming up this week. These guys can really build some strong momentum early on.
- KGP (1-0): They favorably answered all questions surrounding their roster in week 1. The usual suspects of KGP look to be just getting started. Expect them to be a regular on this list throughout the season.
- Purple Reign (0-0-1): 1 yard away from a win before a bad decision by their QB forced them to settle for a tie, they would have been top 5 otherwise. They have a big opportunity to regain their standing with an upset of the top ranked team this week.
- Lightweight (0-0-1): Lightweight revealed their final roster this week, and it looks really good. They’re a solid team from top to bottom and will hang in with the big boys on this list all season.
- Hometown Heroes (1-0): A huge win against Brotherhood puts these guys on the map. I need to see it again though before I buy in. If they can replicate the effort against a tough R4D team this week they’ll move up the ladder in a hurry.
The Jamie Bowl
This will be a fun little challenge to follow.
When I got more requests than expected to partake in the fantasy section of the article, I decided to expand the game and create a 6 man league instead. The season will play out over 5 weeks, where we’ll each face off against each other once. After that, the top 4 players will square off in a 2 week playoff, with the champion taking home bragging rights and a bottle of Jameson as the grand prize.
I was fortunate enough to draw an eclectic mix of FPF characters, from legendary media members to well respected veterans.
Without further ado, allow me to introduce the cast of characters that will entertain you this season:
- Historian’s Hawks (GM Kolethras): GM is well known for being the staff historian when it comes to FPF factoids and culture. He could sit with you for hours and wax poetic about the good old days of the league, yet he remains completely in tune with the modern movement. I’ll need to keep my eye on him this season. He’s a smart cookie.
- Commission Has Fallen (Sean Avraam): Like Hansel from Zoolander, Sean is the name on everyone’s mouth. He’s so hot right now that you’ll catch a burn just for being in his shadow. If his fantasy skills are anywhere near his passing skills, we’re all in trouble.
- Panda Panda! (Jeremy Anderson): The only guy to not pick his own team name, he gets his name for his round frame and gentle nature. Don’t be fooled however, Jeremy is a baller on the field. One of the premier two-way player in the mid divisions, he can put a hurt on his opponents in the blink of an eye. He’s also a savvy team captain and recruiter. I expect him to be the dark horse in this tournament.
- The Dropkick Terries (Terry Tam): The rockstar of this group. Tam is a true renaissance man in this league. From killer podcasts, to constructing dominant teams in division 2, he’s a man of many talents. Don’t let his occasional botched snap fool you, he knows who’s good in this league and will use his vast array of player knowledge to construct a monster.
- Bullet Club (Doug McKernon): Colloquially known as McKdoug, he’s one of the most versatile athletes in the middle divisions of FPF. An excellent QB in his own right, he can just as easily reel off an all-star season at snapper or receiver when called upon. Although he’s the only guy in this league not to presently play in div 3, he’s been around the FPF block for ages and knows how to pick a winner when he sees one.
- Dr. Mantis Tobbogan (Alex Holowach): Last and most likely least is me. My only valid claim to be on this list would be that I’ve been playing in division 3 for years. I’m stuck here, like purgatory, too good to go down and not good enough to move up. It’s like Dawson College all over again. Oh well. At least I can say that I’ve seen many faces pass through these halls. If I win I’ll be saluting myself with a glass of Jameson – that I bought for myself – how sad is that?
The rules are simple. It’ll be a Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) format where each week we pick different players that we think will have the most positive impact in their games. There’s no cap or budget in this game, but each contestant can only pick a player once in the season. Also, the season will be played out in Head-to-Head format, where the home team picks their roster first, and the visitors pick second.

Weekly Awards
QB:
Erminio Iadeluca – Hometown Heroes:
15/19 – 225 yards – 7 TD/0 INT – 155.6 QBR
The reigning div 4B QBOY certainly had something to say in his first career div 3 game, putting up a gem against last year’s number 1 ranked defense. The move up divisions didn’t faze him one bit! Keep in mind he’s one season removed from a staggering 61 TD passes!
WR:
Alex Pilon – Drop the Mic:
5 catches – 112 yards – 3 TDs
We’re privileged to have this upper division speed demon slum it with us this season (or tormented, depending on which side of the field you stand on). From a spectator’s point of view it’s pure gold, as he consistently creates mesmerizing plays after the catch. This won’t be the final time we see him on this list this season.
DEF:
Ryan Aridi – Recipe for Disaster:
4 Sacks
Different season, same old names dominating the game. Ryan is arguably the greatest rusher to ever play the game in FPF, regardless of divisions. He’s a professional at winning the sack title and made sure to get off on the fast track once again.
2WAY:
Adrian Kellman – QB Movement:
3 catches – 56 yards – 3 TDs
3 TK – 1 INT – 1 PD
There may have been others with flashier stats, but there were none who impacted the game as much as he did this week. With his team down early, he put them on his back and carried them to victory with big play after big play. I’m looking forward to see how Top Sauce deal with him in week 2.
Predictions
KGP Junkyard Dogs
JYD impressed offensively in week 1, but their defense left much to be desired. They’ll need to play a near flawless game to beat KGP this week. I don’t think it will happen.
Laval’s Finest Drop The Mic
Laval’s Finest offense is too strong for this DTM defense that is still searching for its identity. We should be treated to a high scoring affair.
Dirty Dawgs ODB’s
The Dogs have too much talent to drop this game against a gritty ODB team. They’ll need to clean up the mistakes but they should be in good position for the win.
Darksiders Lightweight
Lightweight looked good in week 1, and they still had some room to grow. Darksiders were a mess and may take a few weeks to bring it all together. I’m on team Dagenais for this one.
Recipe 4 Disaster Hometown Heroes
The suspension of AJ Gomes will hurt the heroes. They’re coming into this game with supreme confidence right now, but R4D will make this a dogfight if need be to avoid an 0-2 start.
The BrotherHood 2HD
It’s a bit of a toss-up, but I like the consistency of the Dans in this one against an emotional Brotherhood reeling off a week 1 upset. Also, the fact that Jamal Gittens may miss a second straight game gives me some pause. Joey Taylor loves to attack any weakness.
Les Maloudes LGM
Maloudes are just too complete for this LGM team to handle right now. Only a miracle performance from Lever will give his team a chance to steal. We’ve seen him deliver before.
Dad Bods Purple Reign
I won’t pick my team’s games this season because I can’t be impartial to the result. In terms of matchups I think Dad Bod’s have the higher floor, but Purple Reign have the higher ceiling. It will take an excellent performance for Purple to bang with the Bods.
The QB Movement Top Sauce
I like what I saw from QB Movement last week, but this time they get their first real challenge of the season against a talented and savvy opponent. I think we see some growing pains, but the Movement will hang around later than most expect with Top Sauce.
Looney Goonz BearSkins
After getting shutout in week 1, a matchup with a rebuilding team is just what the doctor ordered for Bearskins. They will look to go back to basics and their old tricks should have some luster against an opponent that doesn’t know them so well. I do see an upset scenario for Looney Goonz, but I have too much respect for Bearskins to accept the implications of that yet.
That’s it for this week! Week 1 of FPF is officially in the books, and week 2 is set to start up soon. See how fast it goes! Enjoy your time on the field because winter season passes by in a blur.
