D3 Stew: Early Returns and Zscores

D3 Stew: Early Returns and Zscores

The first trimester of the season is done, and it’s time to take a moment to pause and reflect on our development to date.

Our scoring is up, in week 3 we reached 30.85 points per team, the highest point of the season so far.

We currently have two undefeated teams, and three winless teams. 4 of those 5 teams hail from conference B, suggesting that it’s the conference of top-heavy powerhouses. Conference A, on the other hand, is looking like the conference of parity. It’ll be interesting to see if this trend is strengthened or reversed in upcoming weeks.

We have 4 QBs currently averaging over 200 yards and 5 TDs per game, suggesting that it’s going to be a dogfight down the stretch for the MVP trophy. We equally have 4 QBs currently averaging under 150 yards and 3 TDs per game, a far cry from what they expected before the season began. It’s still early enough to turn it around.

The top receiver in the division is on a record breaking path, while the top 2 receivers come from the same offense. We’ve seen some surprising names thrust themselves into the top 10 so far, while some of the regular big names look a bit sluggish out of the gates.

Most importantly, we have an exciting division that consistently delivers thrilling games each week. Whether it be the Hometown Heroes upset in week 1, the Laval’s Finest and DTM throw down in week 2, or the Darksiders shocker special this week, each week has delivered a handful of games well worth the cost of admission.

With that said, let me take brief moment to congratulate you all for a fantastic start to the year…

There, it’s done. Time to get back to work, it’s only week 3.

Enjoy the statistical breakdown of season to date below. But don’t let it distract you from the fact that the meat of the season lies ahead.

Good luck div 3. Keep up the good work.

By the Numbers

Considering we’ve reached the first trimester of the season, this week I decided to do something special for By the Numbers. I decided to take a deeper dive into player rankings at the QB and WR positions, introducing the Z-Score to rank players by available stats.

Simply put, a Z-score is the number of standard deviations from the mean a data point sits at. For our purposes, the Z-Score will measure how far a player ranks either above or below the divisional average at your position. The higher the Z-Score, the better you’ve ranked in comparison to your peers.

For QBs, I attributed equal weight to each of the measurable statistical categories. That means Yards, TDs and INTs all have an equal impact on the final rating. The final score is achieved by summing all the individual scores for each category (Zint for QBs is reversed for negative value).

Without further ado, here are your week 3 rankings at QB:

Breakdown:

Top 5

It’s obvious that Mario Porreca is the clear cut MVP after the first 3 weeks. His positional value is a whopping 37.72% higher than the next ranked passer. With a fairly soft schedule ahead of him and a wicked receiving staff it will be difficult to unseat him from the top position…Despite an average week 3, Sean Avraam remains a close 3rd in the conversation. Once he clears the difficult part of his schedule in the next few weeks he should be free to take a stab at the top spot…Erminio Iadeluca is flying under the radar as one of the top ranked QBs in the division so far. Barring a week 2 setback with his top 2 weapons out of the lineup, he’s had a great start to the season and is picking right back up from a 61 TD campaign in div 4B last winter…Dylan Taylor rounds out the top 5 at the position. He’s a fearless gunslinger who heads arguably the division’s deepest offensive unit. He’s a candidate to drop 6+ TDs on any given week.

6-10

The next group has some interesting names in it. Phil Cutler is longstanding star in this division and knows how to run an effective offense. I expect him to make a move for the top 5 in the upcoming weeks…Vincent Richard is the biggest surprise in the top 10. Known primarily as a lower division QB, he’s made a nice transition to div 3 so far this year. Having just played against him, I can attest that he’s a poised dual threat QB who’s rapidly improving each week as he gets more comfortable at this level…Vince Nardone hasn’t had the hottest of starts, but he’s doing what needs to be done and leading his team to victories. He’s also taking very good care of the ball and allowing his stifling defense to win games so far…Old reliable, Simon Dagenais finds himself in the top 10. He’s been steady for Lightweight so far despite the ACL injury he sustained in the Fall Cup. I don’t think we’ve seen him hit his full stride yet…The LGM duo of Fred Dupuis and Alex Lever round out the top 10. This team has been the most surprising story for me so far in 2018. Written off as a lower division pushover preseason, they sit at 1-2 but could easily be 3-0 at this point if they could finish games.

 11-15

Neil Etinson has had 2 big weeks in a row, but his goose egg in week 1 is keeping him out of the top 10. His roster is back and they’re churning out points, but I’ll need to see him drop a gem on a real defense before I buy in any further…Joey Taylor is far too low on this list for a player of his caliber. I’m sure he’d be the first to admit that his play has stunk the past two weeks. Is it possible that all this HOF talk has gotten in his head? I don’t expect a competitor of his nature to back down. He needs a get right game pronto…Jason Rossie is taking some lumps in his first season of div 3. That’s okay. He’ll adapt to the caliber of the division throughout the season and be a better QB for it in the future…Ryan Lelinowski hasn’t progressed much from last year. His Dirty Dawgs team is reeling right now and there’s little sign of relief coming up. It’s gut check time, as he’ll need to strap down and be the spark that ignites his roster going forward…Jake Applebaum is feeling the rust big time after 2 years removed from the game. It’s too early to fairly asses him as he’ll need more reps to get his confidence and mobility back. I think we start to see the real Jake the Snake by the later second half of the season, hopefully it won’t be too late for R4D’s playoff chances.

16-20

There’s some surprising names in this list that no one would have expected preseason. The good news is that it’s still early, and the difference between top 10 and bottom 10 at this point isn’t too great to overcome. Myles Gibbon is taking his first real crack at the league this season, so it was reasonable to expect some growing pains despite his tackle pedigree. With less than 10 completions in each of his last two games he’ll need to get the ball out quicker and get some more rhythm in his game. The top QBs average 17-25 completions weekly, which has proven to be a winning formula…Fred Morissette has been away from the game for a few seasons and it shows. He’s learning to work with his new toys, but the process has been slower than expected. His team is still 2-1 so there’s been little harm so far…The most shocking name in this group is without a doubt Theo Ojeaha. Widely picked as the preseason favorite for QBOY, he’s looked sluggish behind the helm over the first trimester. He’s also a stone cold baller and can turn on the switch in a moment’s notice. With his Brotherhood defense clamping down and getting him extra possessions each week it’s only a matter of time until the light turns on…The Lanni’s (Giovanni and Antonio) have struggled out of the gate. They don’t really have the supporting cast to succeed at this level, so Antonio will need to figure out a gameplan around using his scrambling to create opportunities…Anthony Beauchamp-Frezza has been disappointing at this level so far. You’ve got to tip your hat to him for taking on the challenge, since he’s still eligible to throw in Div 4, but the gameplan he used there will not work here. They’ve got to figure it out fast, time is ticking.

For WRs, I used a weighted average assigning 20% Zscore value to REC and 40% each to Yards and TDs. Basically, Yards and TDs weight twice as much as REC in the adjusted value (Ztotal ADJ).

Some Observations:

Top 10

As mentioned last week, Alex Pilon is flirting with a record breaking path to start the season, so it’s no surprise that he sits in the top position after three weeks. He’s nearly 25% more productive than the next player on the list…His teammate Daniel Mancini is the biggest surprise on this list. Relatively unknown before this season, he’s exploded out of the gates this year, backed by phenomenal play by his top ranked QB…Known as primarily a defensive guy in the middle divisions, Danny D’Amour has been a revelation so far this season at receiver…We won’t be able to ignore Robbi Dejean much longer, he has arrived as legitimate offensive force…Div C WROY Jordan Allard is just casually hanging around as a top 10 receiver, don’t be surprised if he busts out in the upcoming weeks…Jeremy Anderson has been the most (only?) impactful Darksiders receiver so far. Other teams will start taking notice…Adrien Kellman rounds out the top 10 with only 7 receptions so far! He’s a monster anytime they get near the money zone.

Remaining remarks

Zach Zwirn needs to be taken seriously as a legit receiving threat at this level…Sebastien Simon has carried the Looney Goonz offense so far…Joseph Sifakis is surprisingly the top receiver for JYD through 3 games…Jamie Ojeaha would be flirting with a top 10 ranking if he hadn’t missed last game…As a testament to how well balanced the Hometown Heroes offense is, Jimmy Marneris ranks in as their top rated receiver at the 30th position…Justin McLean has had a surprisingly slow start to the year at 34th, but his team remains undefeated…Guillaume Bourassa has slotted in nicely as the number 2 receiver for Bearskins. He’d likely be in the top 25 if not for a missed game…is Omar Jackson just a redzone specialist in the Brotherhood offense? Or will he breakout soon…You can tell the ODB’s are reeling offensively, Anthony Nadon rounds out the top 50 as their top ranked receiver.

Headlines

Darksiders pop the Dad Bod bubble

The Dad Bods came into this game as the top ranked team in the division, cruising past their opponents in the first two weeks without much resistance. They may have been a little too complacent entering the matchup versus a Darksiders team hungry to put a big win on their résumé. Darksiders also benefitted from a guest appearance from 2WAY talent Jordan Moses in this one, filling in for the still unseen Alexis Bessette.

The game started with Sean Avraam hitting Steve Sanner on a corner route over Jordan Moses for the score.

You could tell that Darksiders were still adjusting to each other on the opening drive, as Fred Morissette held the ball too long on third down and took a big sack from Anthony Da Silva, forcing a punt.

Once Dad Bods approached midfield, Avraam attempted the same corner that he hit on the previous drive, but this time Jordan Moses was ready and batted it down. They failed to convert on 4th and short and gave the ball back to Darksiders with nice field position.

Darksiders finally got on the board with a TD to Jeremy Anderson, the first of 3 on the night for the Panda.

Both teams quickly exchanged scores and Dad Bods found themselves with the ball with under 2 minutes to go in the half. Avraam started the drive with his customary slant route to snapper Da Silva, but the ball skidded off his hands and was picked off by an awaiting Morissette.

With a Key opportunity to put themselves ahead before the half, and start with the ball in the second, the Darksiders once again floundered offensively. They couldn’t solve a tight man defense from Dad Bods in the redzone, and Vinny Gualano made a huge sack on 4th down to end the threat. The game would go into the half tied at 13.

The Darksiders looked a bit flat coming out of the half, but a controversial pass interference on fourth down on a ball thrown over the middle into tight coverage ended up giving them the jolt they needed to take off. A few plays later Morissette hit Anderson on a nice fade route for the go-ahead score.

Dad Bods, now heated after a perceived blown call hurt them on D, quickly responded on offense. Jordan Allard took a slant route and busted several tackles on his way for a long score.

You could tell that something had clicked for Darksiders on the previous drive, as they looked more confident on offense and started executing their go-to plays. Morissette casually positioned his team at the opponent’s 10 yard line, before hitting his long time safety blanket Yann Drouin on a beautiful back shoulder pass for the score. A key convert to Travis Moses put them up 7 points with, with a little under 5 minutes to go.

The following drive saw Avraam go back to Allard on the corner route for the score. However, the Dad Bods missed the key convert and trailed by 1.

Darksiders marched the field looking for the kill shot. On Third down at the Dad Bod 7 yard line, Morissette took what looked to be a deep sack from Rich Humes a split second before the ball was released. The ref let it play out and it momentarily seemed like Travis Moses reeled it in for the score. Amidst the Dad Bods protests and some confusion over the spot the ball was instead placed on the 1 yard line, 4th down. Darksiders couldn’t punch it in and turned it over to the Dad Bods with 5 plays and 49 yards for the win.

Avraam quickly split the field with a corner route to Vinny Gualano. With a few plays remaining they chose to take a couple of stabs at the endzone. The final pass was a touch pass over the middle, but Travis Moses swooped in and bated it down for the win.

Lightweight dip LGM

Lightweight and LGM went blow for blow on Monday night at Hebert in what turned out to be  thrilling exchange that went down to the wire.

Both teams came into the game in different directions. LGM was 1-1, coming off a spirited win over Les Maloudes, and would have been 2-0 if not for a heartbreaking last minute loss in week 1. Lightweight were 0-1-1 but were reeling a bit after a lopsided loss to Darksiders the week prior.

Simon Dagenais looked a bit tentative early on, holding the ball longer than he normally does and missing some early open windows. Fortunately for the savvy veteran, he kept using a slippery hip thrust to dip speed rusher Malcolm Archer, and bought enough time to find his receivers downfield. Cory Kennedy was the main beneficiary on those extended plays, reeling in 67 yards and 2 TDs on the night.

On the other side Frédéric Dupuis was sharp early, throwing absolute bombs. His first 2 passes both went for 40 yard TDs. Robbi Dejean once again lit up the scoreboard, going off for 109 yards and 3 TDs on 6 catches. He’s the 5th ranked receiver through 3 weeks and looks to be gaining traction each game. Dupuis had another solid night overall, hitting 14 of 25 targets for 230 yards and 5 TDs to only 1 INT. However, the 1 INT would end up being significant.

Simon started heating up as the game went on. He repeatedly peppered Francois Hogue down the sideline for juicy gains. Hogue had a big night with 76 yards and 1 TD on 9 catches. With about 6 minutes left in the game Simon got the ball back with his team trailing 33-31. The crowd of onlookers began chanting his name and heckling him with entreaties not to “choke”. The cool-headed gunslinger took the field with poise, looking to steal a win for his team.

Archer finally landed his prey on first down, pinning Simon back against his own goal line. With under 4 minutes to go, at 4th and 10 with his heel throttling the back of the endzone, Simon the cowboy decided to go for it. He connected on a deep ball to Kennedy, but the play was broken up by Dejean barreling his way through and drawing a pass interference. The penalty got them out of the doghouse and gave them a fresh set of downs.

Two third down conversions followed before Lightweight found themselves at the LGM doorstep. On second down, the excellent fill-in Tam Vilaydeth put a nasty triple move on his defender and Lightweight momentarily thought to have taken the lead. A late tackle at the 1 yard line set the stage for an even more thrilling ending. On 4th down, with 5 plays to go and the game on the line, the ice-cold Simon went back to Tam on the triple move, this time finishing it off with the lead for his team.

Simon finished his night going 24 for 38, with a whopping 269 yards, 6 TDs and 1 INT. More importantly, he led a game winning 14 play, 6 minute drive that ate the clock and left his opponent with only a few moves left.

Dupuis picked up a good chuck of yards on 1st down, putting himself in position to take a few stabs at the endzone. His second play was a seam in traffic that just missed his favorite target Dejean. He went right back to it again on the next play, but this time Cory Kennedy was ready for it, sealing the win for Lightweight with the INT.

Power Rankings

There was some shakeup at the top, and a returning customer at the bottom of the top 10. As a first trimester special I decided to do a division-wide ranking of all 20 teams.

  1. Laval’s Finest (3-0) ↑1: The new kings of the castle. Will remain here until someone can knock them off. Looking forward to the showdown with Top Sauce in week 5.
  1. Dad Bods (2-1) ↓1: The never wanted the target on their back to begin with. Now that the pressure is off they can take a deep breath and get back to doing what they do.
  2. Brotherhood (2-1): I feel like this team is just starting to load up before dropping a bomb on the division. Toughest 3 seed in all of FPF.
  3. Top Sauce (3-0): They defense is crushing it right now. If the offense picks up this team will be downright scary. A big win in week 5 will definitely get them the attention they feel they deserve.
  4. KGP (2-1): Hung in there against the big dogs last week. This team is going to be lurking in the shadows all season. You can still get great odds for picking them as a darkhorse.
  5. 2HD (2-1): Still don’t look right after that beatdown from Brotherhood. Need a get right game to retrieve their mojo.
  6. Purple Reign (1-1-1): Weeks 5 and 6 will tell the story for this team. Can they build themselves up to deliver the goods by then?
  7. Drop the Mic (1-1-1): What an explosive offense. It’s been a treat following them so far. I don’t see anyone slowing them down until week 8.
  8. Darksiders (2-1) ↑1: The hottest team in the division? Maybe? They did what they needed to do to beat Dad Bods, but it wasn’t incredibly pretty. Still, they’re getting stronger each week.
  9. Hometown Heroes (2-1) ↑1: Look out for them this week vs Dad Bods. They want to make a splash in the division and this is their chance.
  10. Bearskins (2-1): They’ve caught fire on O over the last 2 games against inferior opponents. This week against KGP will be the real test.
  11. Lightweight (1-1-1): They pulled out the type of gutsy win against LGM that makes me a believer again. If they can pull off the unfathomable against Brotherhood this week they’ll force their way into the top 10.
  12. LGM (1-2): The team that could be 3-0, but instead is 1-2 because they can’t close games. Still, they’re the best 1-2 team and have been a pleasant surprise through the early part of the year.
  13. R4D (1-2): They just don’t look right yet on the field and it’s impacting their record early on. Trust the process. I have faith in this team to catch their stride as the season progresses.
  14. QB Movement (1-2): The good? They won’t go 1-9 as I so foolishly projected preseason. The bad? They’ve plateaued against upper mid-tier opponents in the past 2 weeks. Until they pull off a win against one of the bigger teams they’ll remain a bottom-half team.
  15. Les Maloudes (1-2) ↓7: They’re getting brushed over a bit amidst tougher competition this year. The offense has to devise a new gameplan because their run-and-gun style from div 4 isn’t working right now.
  16. JYD (0-2-1): The best team to not have a win yet this year. They’ve come close a few times but haven’t been able to get over the hump just yet. It looks like a development year for JYD but they should continue to be a thorn in the sides on div 3.
  17. Looney Goonz (0-3): The win hasn’t come yet but these guys look stronger each week. Their offense actually has some pop. The defense on the other hand is lost out there.
  18. ODBs (1-2): They’re playing tough, scrappy games since they got their QB back last week. Still, the offense needs a jolt to compete against some of the better teams in the division.
  19. Dirty Dawgs (0-3): It’s time to scrap the formalities and let Lelinowski and Chitayat play hero ball. At this rate a couple of wins will end up being a good season for them.

The Jamie Bowl

We’re all tied up in the Jamie Bowl folks! Week 2 saw all losing teams from last week get on the board with clutch performances. This thing is really heating up, and promises to be entertaining down the stretch. Only 3 games to go to claim a playoff spot!

Let’s take a look at how week 2 shook out and how week 3 is set to begin!

Week 2

Match 1

#MantisDown

Doug was dialed in with his picks this week. Starting off his week with a monster performance from Porreca and Pilon was a bad omen for me of things to come. Malkin and Zwirn were savvy picks, both receivers have been consistent producers in each game this season.

After seeing Doug’s picks, I had to get a bit cheeky and pick myself and my favorite target James, hoping to take destiny in my own hands. I paid off for myself (weird sentence), but it wasn’t James’ turn this week. With such monster performances from 2WAY spots across the board this week, having the lowest scoring pairing definitely hurt me. Bekelis was once again a beast.

Match 2

The Purple Reign combo paid off for Panda this week, but he had a major flop at receiver which ended up being fatal. He’ll need to take on less risk at the position next week.

Terry was the big papa this week, outscoring everyone else. Simon ended up being a fantastic value pick at QB, it’ll suck for Terry to have to thank him for his service. Brotherhood ended up being the top defense of the week. Terry also benefitted from the explosion at 2WAY this week, with the 3rd highest score at the position.

#RoadWarrior. After 2 weeks of choosing second, Terry still managed to position himself in 1st place. He now gets home field advantage for the rest of the season. Look out for the dropkick.

Match 3

GM wasn’t satisfied with his returns last week, and used his home field advantage to make a Wednesday night comeback vs Sean this week. Picking his opponent as his own QB was a sweet mind trick that paid off. In return Sean Picked Joey Taylor going into a tough matchup, which ended up being his downfall. GM also picked the highest scoring 2WAY tandem this week, with a money pick on the undervalued Kellman.

Despite D’Amour ripping off the biggest individual fantasy score of the season, Sean couldn’t overcome a miserable receiver flop this week. He went all in for big names, but both players have undefined roles on their respective offenses so far. Still, the backend of his roster held him up and keeps him the overall points scored race.

Weekly Awards

QB:

Mario Porreca – DTM:

16/18 – 299 yards – 7 TD/0 INT – 158.3 QBR

The rare perfect passer rating. Porreca teed off on a helpless Dawgs defense this past week. He’s cruised through the first 3 weeks of the season as the division’s top passer. Another tasty matchup against a porous LGM defense this week might have him right back here next week.

WR:

Danny D’Amour – Purple Reign:

8 catches – 101 yards – 4 TDs

Danny of Love was unhinged this week, repeatedly gashing the Looney Goonz secondary for major gains. Working on the inside and the outside, he shook free at all depths of the field. Unstoppable performance by the man with no gloves.

DEF:

Theo Ojeaha – Brotherhood:

1 TKL – 3 INT – 1 PD – 1 TD

While the offense may still be a work in progress, Theo Ojeaha’s ability to dominate games defensively at this level cannot be ignored. This is what happens when opposing QBs choose to test his side of the field. A warning shot for all upcoming QBs on his schedule.

2WAY:

Domenic Benevento – Hometown Heroes:

6 catches – 32 yards – 1 TD

5 TK – 2 INT – 1 PD – 1 TD

Others may have had bigger statistical performances this week, but no one individually impacted the outcome of a close game more than he did for the Heroes. Dom has been the veteran backbone of this young and exciting Heroes team. His leadership also extends to the stat sheet, where he ripped off this gem of a performance to deliver the victory against JYD.

Predictions

It must have ate my Wheaties this week. I was on with my picks going 7-2 and brining my season record to 12-6.

This is the week of the road dogs, as I’m boldly taking 8 visiting teams out of my 9 picks. These teams will take control from the coin flip, and never look back.
