Czikk’s Cover 3: 6+R=Playoff Form
Czikk’s Cover 3: OTF ruins Dad Bod Squad’s perfect season, The Brotherhood and Two and a Half Dans (barely) keep perfect seasons alive
And then there were three. The story of Week 10 in Division 3 saw a two-win OTF team upset the previously unbeaten Dad Bod Squad.
The Brotherhood escaped with a one-point win for the second consecutive week and Two and a Half Dans squeaked by Mongoose to keep their perfect season alive. Meanwhile, the unbeaten Coyotes flexed their muscles on Show Me Your TDs, serving up a 50-burger.
8 Boys 1 Cup and Jonesers scored a ridiculous 107 points in a shootout and 6+R notched its eighth win in a row. Gros Chefs Bandits shut out Les Buddays 30-0 and the B.D Bandits won their fifth straight game after starting the season 0-4.
Finally, Red Raiders upset Top Sauce, snapping a three-game losing streak in the process.
OTF shatters Dad Bod Squad’s dreams of a perfect season
Sean Avraam missed on just eight of 33 passes all game, throwing three touchdowns and nearly 200 yards. But it wasn’t enough.
The Dads (8-1) squandered a six-point halftime lead Sunday night, dropping its first game of the season to OTF (3-6), 27-26. OTF, which won just its third game of the season, scored 14 points in the second half to complete the comeback.
QB Mario Porreca wasn’t stellar, completing less than half of his pass attempts and throwing for three scores and two picks. Jacob Bernett grabbed eight balls for 115 yards and a score for while Dariusz Golebiowski caught two passes, both of them going for scores.
In the loss, Matthew Patrone grabbed a TD and picked off Porreca. Anthony Da Silva caught two of Avraam’s three scores. Ryan Aridi has quietly taken over the sack lead with 21 QB flag-grabs this season.
The Brotherhood, Two and a Half Dans stay perfect in tough circumstances
Both the Brotherhood (9-0) and Two and a Half Dans (9-0) recorded their ninth wins of the season, with both teams escaping with one-point wins. For the Brotherhood it was the second straight week this happened.
On Sunday night The Brotherhood took on a respectable Laval’s Finest (6-3) team. QB Theo Ojeaha had an unusually poor showing, going 10 for 22 for 106 yards, two TDs and two INTs. He’s thrown four picks in the last two weeks after throwing just two over the first seven games of the season.
Still, he got the ‘W’ along with his team. As usual, the interception king Ojeaha made a big impact on defense, picking off Laval’s Finest QB Justin Lavallee. Ojeaha leads the league with 11 picks.
Jamal Gittens came up big for The Brotherhood, catching both of Ojeaha’s TDs. Keven Kaya and Jeremy Ronsin also picked off Lavallee, with Kaya taking his to the house.
The Brotherhood built up a 19-6 lead by halftime before surrendering 18 in the second frame, so the score may not have told the whole story.
Jordan McLaren, Theo Bekelis and Zach Zwirn all caught strikes from Lavallee in the loss, with Bekelis and McLaren both picking off Ojeaha on defense.
Two and a Half Dans, meanwhile, escaped a pesky Mongoose (4-5) team with a 27-26 victory, overcoming a 13-7 halftime deficit.
QB Joey Taylor completed 26 of 37 passes for 222 yards, three TDs and two picks. Danny McFee caught six passes and also threw one pass for a touchdown. Matthew Rupcic caught 10 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the win, also picking off Mongoose QB Alexandre Gaudet.
Taylor now leads the league in completions (176), despite having thrown for just the ninth-most attempts in the league.
On the losing side, Gaudet threw for four touchdowns on 20 completions, hitting Cédric Nuckle six times (TD) and Mathieu Lepage for five receptions (TD). Stephan Osman and Antoine Vaillancourt also put up six points. Wade Jr. Shallcross picked off Dans QB Taylor twice in the loss.
8 Boys 1 Cup edges Jonesers in crazy 107-point shootout
It’s fair to say 8 Boys 1 Cup (4-5) has been playing inspired football over the last few weeks. The Boys beat Darksiders two weeks ago and took The Brotherhood to the wire in a loss last week.
This time QB Jesse Dupuis threw seven TDs as his team beat Jonesers (3-7) 58-49. The two teams put up a combined 107 points in the fireworks show. The Boys led 37-27 at halftime.
Boys receiver Alex Hovington caught three TDs and forced an interception on defense, Mike Pierrecin caught two TDs and Domenic Benevento registered 103 yards and a score. Gabriel Wiseman also caught a Dupuis TD.
On the other side, Jonesers QB Ryan Lelinowski threw for 244 yards, six TDs and the lone pick. Dave Chitayat caught six balls for 131 yards and a pair of TDs. He leads the league in receiving yards (892) and TDs (22). Cal Pienaar caught two of Lelinowski’s TDs while Yossi and Sahar Cohen each scored as well.
Coyotes improve to 9-0, put up 50-burger
It’s good times for Coyotes (9-0), who throttled Show Me Your TDs (4-5) 50-19. Sammy Feder completed 14 of 17 passes for 237 yards, seven TDs and no picks. Shawn Steen, Andrew Langburt and Josh Feder all caught two TDs each, while my boy AJ Rashkovan hit paydirt as well.
Feder completed passes to all seven of his possible receivers.
Langburt, Kevin Smuda and Adam Rockman all intercepted TDs QB Mike Addona. Addona threw for three scores in the loss, but it was already over by halftime. Coyotes 34-13.
B.D Bandits win fifth straight after 0-4 start
Squeaking into the playoffs may be a tall task at this point, but the B.D Bandits (5-4) are getting style points for their relentless late-season push. For the fifth straight week, the Bandits came away with a ‘George Dubya.’
This time they beat Darksiders (4-5), edging them out 39-38. It was a pretty tight game as the teams headed into the intermission tied at 19-19.
QB Mark Belvedere threw for 184 yards, four TDs and a pick. Two former St. Mary’s Huskies in Chris Eramian and Gassire “G” Diop caught TD passes from Belvedere. Eramian finished the day with two scores on six catches.
Belvedere also forced his third interception on defense over the last five games.
On the other side, Darksiders QB Frédéric Morissette threw 24 completions for 237 yards, six TDs and the lone pick. Three of his scores went to Jonathan Lyristis (7 rec, 77 yards), while two went to Jamil Springer (4 rec, 34 yards).
Paolo Della Rocca told me he dropped what would have been the winning touchdown, but the writer-extrordinaire still hauled in five passes for 45 yards for Darksiders.
Around the league
6+R (8-1) continued its torrid pace as the regular season ends, notching their eighth win in a row. They beat Les Eudists (2-7) 38-24. Frédéric Viens may have emerged as the league’s MVP over the past few weeks, having now grabbed the league lead in pass TDs (49) while throwing just five picks. One could also argue Sammy Feder of Coyotes is in that race too (he played one game less, has thrown 46 TDS and just four picks). One could also argue Theo Ojeaha deserves that title, since he also leads the league in picks and has thrown for a fine season at QB.
In this game, Viens was solid once again, throwing for 180 yards and five scores. Anthony Brisebois registered three of those TDs, catching eight passes for 110 yards. Anthony Garant and Marc-Antoine Viens also scored. The latter receiver leads the league in receptions (59) and is tied for fifth in the league with 15 TDs.
BearSkins (7-2) crushed The Heismans (0-9) 46-6, as QB Neil Etinson threw six TDs to Sasha Papich (3), Marco Bertoldi, Sean Brophy and Ryan Etinson.
Gros Chefs Bandits (3-6) got their third win of the season by shutting out the winless Les Buddays (0-9) 30-0.
Les Messieurs Chats (2-7) upset Leightweight (4-6) 44-19, which had to be a disappointing end to the season for QB Simon Dagenais and his squad. Dagenais threw five picks in the loss, three of which went back for six points.
Bruno Collette forced three INTs, including a pick-six. David Centomo picked off Dagenais twice, taking both of them to the house.
On offense, Centomo did what he needed to do, throwing four TDs on nine completions to Nicola Centomo (2), Mathieu Jacques and Mathieu Thuot.
Red Raiders (3-6) pulled off an upset of its own, taking out Top Sauce (5-5) 30-27, snapping a three game losing streak. QB Mike Roy was solid, throwing three of his five TD passes to Serge Pilon Jr. Andrew Carruthers and Marty Freedman also caught TD passes.
Vince Nardone tossed three scores and no picks in the losing effort, with Jean-Daniel Chevalier and Justin McLean each catching a TD.
And now we head into the final week of the season, seeing which teams will ultimately take which playoff spots. We also have some interesting matchups this weekend to keep a close eye on.
Power Rankings
- The Brotherhood (9-0): A perfect team all season, The Brotherhood’s recent tight wins could show a group that sticks together in the face of adversity. I often overlook their spectacular defense, having allowed the fewest points in the league (123).
- Coyotes (9-0): Sammy Feder has put together an MVP-type season, even while missing a game. His receivers have played excellent football and these guys will be a legit threat in the playoffs. Their last game goes against the resurgent 8 Boys 1 Cup.
- Two and a Half Dans (9-0): It’s hard to put these guys in third spot because they’ve been so dominant as well. Joey Taylor had an uncharacteristically poor game last week, throwing two interceptions and getting sacked five times. But what more dirt can you really find on this group? Not much. They face a three-win OTF team to close out the season.
- 6+R (8-1): Six fast guys plus Ryan move up to the fourth spot as a result of the Dads being upset. QB Frédéric Viens and his brother Marc-Antoine are playing absolutely lights-out football, and I could see these dudes heading to the finals. Their final game? A six-win F.O.E team.
- Dad Bod Squad (8-1): It must have been disappointing for a team that was gunning for an undefeated season. Even with the loss the Dads still lead their conference, since BearSkins have one win less. This week will not be easy for the Dads, facing a Mongoose team that took Two and a Half Dans to the wire last week.
- BearSkins (7-2): BearSkins have quietly churned out a nice season after I witnessed their Week 7 loss to Wolfpack. QB Neil Etinson has played well, throwing for 47 TDs and giving up just one sack all season. Their final game goes against the three-win Gros Chefs Bandits.
- Laval’s Finest (6-3): After winning two straight Laval just lost a very close game to the The Brotherhood. In seven games QB Justin Lavallee has thrown 34 TDs and is completing 65% of his passes. Their final game will be against a team with an equal record, Brocassion. Get your popcorn out.
- Brocassion (6-3): They’ll take on Laval’s Finest this weekend in what should be a great game. Brocassion has won three of its last four and QB Kristian Cerantola has thrown just three interceptions in eight games. Five different receivers have caught at least five TDs this season.
- F.O.E (6-3): I’m still undecided about this six-win F.O.E team: they can clearly score points (273), but they also give up a lot of points (269). They sack opposing QBs less than once per game on average. But their receiving core is slick: six guys have at least 20 catches and four TDs on the season.
- B.D Bandits (5-4): The Bandits break the Top-10 for the first time all season as they eye a six-win campaign heading into the final game. Their late season push has been heroic, but sadly it still may not be enough. I give their team MVP to QB Mark Belvedere, who has come alive on both offense and defense over their winning streak.
