Coed + Women’s Power Rankings and More!

It always feels like the FPF season flies by, and this year is no exception. We are already halfway through the winter season and so far the word I would use to describe Coed 2 is unpredictable. 3HUNNAS started off the season with a blowout loss to Y&Y and a tie to La Secte. They look destined to have a poor season but have turned things around of late with dominant wins over Fitsquad and Team Commando. Y&Y have also solved their problem at quarterback. It looks like FPF veteran Robert White will be at the helm going forwards. All that to say I have no clue how the season will unfold in Coed 2, and you should definitely read the power rankings lower in the article. Before getting into the rankings, here are this week’s games of the week.

Week 4 Games of the Week

Les Bleus (33) – The Rock (25) – Women’s 1

The Rock are off to a shaky start this season. If you look at their stats, with only 63 points scored, you would presume their offence was the issue. They are the lowest scoring team in all of the Women’s 1 division. While their offence might have let them down before, that was not the case in their 33-25 week 4 loss to Les Bleus. Carol-Ann Ménard was just about perfect, completing 18 of 33 attempted passes for 240 yards and four scores. The only blemish on her record was the one interception she threw. If I had one critique for this offence, it would be the same one I have for my teams in the Women’s division: overreliance on a single receiver. Alexandra Falcon-Korb had a fantastic game, totalling over 100 receiving yards. That being said, dependence on a single receiver makes an offence much easier to stop.

While The Rock’s offence might have had their best showing in weeks, their defence was not able to withstand Les Bleus’ ferocious passing attack led by Sandrine Gobeil-Huot. On a day where both passers were red hot, just one more stop probably would have been enough for The Rock to secure the win in this one. Stopping Gobeil-Huot is not an easy task when the division has the likes of extremely talented QBs like Sara Parker in it. Gobeil-Huot has been the best quarterback in the division so far this year. She has thrown 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Versus The Rock, she continued her tremendous run, throwing for 270 yards and no interceptions. While she did rely heavily on Chloe Courtemanche, who caught seven passes for 87 yards and two scores, she did a better job at spreading the ball than her rival. All five of Les Bleus’ receivers finished the game with multiple receptions and at least three targets. What makes this Les Bleus offence so hard to stop is the depth of their receiving core. Every single one of these receivers has the potential to have a huge game. From a schematic point of view, what that means is that Les Bleus consistently win against man coverage. That forces opposing defences to play uniquely zone coverage, which Gobeil-Huot can shred masterfully. For any team to have a chance of ending Les Bleus’ winning streak, they will need to have the athletes to matchup with Les Bleus in man coverage and force Gobeil-Huot to make increasingly difficult throws into tight windows.

Team Commando (18) vs Y & Y (26) – Coed 2

Even though Y&Y have found their quarterback in Robert White, that does not mean their quarterbacking problems will be instantly resolved. While White threw for four touchdowns and 177 yards in this one, he also turned the ball over three times and was heavily reliant on his snapper Ryan Dobbs-Garnett. It is going to take White some time to get used to playing quarterback. Across his 463 games FPF career, he has only completed 91 passes. He has been mostly a backup quarterback, filling in when a starter goes down. That being said, I know that he has been throwing in the MFL. While the talent level in that league is not anywhere near what it is in FPF, those are still important practice reps. By the time the postseason comes around, I expect White to have this offence humming.

The first thing White will need to do is get Y&Y’s cast of female actors more involved in the passing game. In their win versus Team Commando, they completed just three of their passes to women.

Ultimately it was their defence that won them this game and more specifically, it was the stupendous rushing of Julia Paradis Roberge and the ball hawking skills of Matthew Peacock that came up huge. The Commandos’ Louis-Philippe Naud is a quarterback who loves to scramble around and buy time in the pocket. Paradis Roberge made that impossible, sacking Naud three times and pressuring him all game long. That pressure forced Naud into more than a few errant throws. The beneficiary of that pressure and off target passes was Peacock. Normally best known as a receiver, he showed his worth as a DB in this game by picking the Commandos off twice.

As for the Commandos, this was their best game of the season. They came within one score of knocking off the top placed team in Coed 2. Teams clued in very quickly to the fact that Edouard Gagnon was the main receiving threat on this team and have been working hard to take him away. With Gagnon being double covered, Clovis Desrochers has stepped up in a big way. He caught all six passes thrown his way for a total of 70 receiving yards and two scores. Defensively, Philippe Diquinzio stepped up and recorded two interceptions to go along with Félix Perreault’s one. All in all, this team has a talented group of athletes who are contributing to all facets of the game. They are just missing one thing, and it is perhaps the most important element to success in Coed: involving the women. Clara Archambault is the team’s leading female receiver and she has just caught two passes in four games. Simply put, Team Commando will not start winning games until their female players get more involved.

Week 3 Teams of the Week

Every week, I will name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one and vice versa. I will name one team of the week for both Coed divisions combined and a separate team of the week for the Women’s division. You can make the team of the week in both divisions. For the Coed team of the week, there will always be a minimum of two women on the offensive and defensive team.

Coed 1 Power Rankings

1.     Power Rangers (4-0)

Simply put, there is nowhere else that Power Rangers can be in these rankings. In every single metric, they are the best team in Coed 1. They have scored the most points and conceded the fewest. If that weren’t enough, they have the best quarterback, receiver, and female players. Anything short of a championship should be disappointing for Power Rangers.

2.     Party Mix (3-0)

Just as solidly as Power Rangers are anchored into the top spot, Party Mix are cemented in the second spot. If Power Rangers are head and shoulders above the rest of the competition, Party Mix are a head above. The difference is very simple: to beat Power Rangers, you need to score on every single drive, to beat Party Mix, you need to score on every drive except one.

3.     Two and a Half Kittens (2-2-1)

This pick will not make EZFun very happy, but a crucial part of a Power Ranking is the potential and I think the ceiling for Two and a Half Kittens is higher than EZFun’s. I am enamored with Joey Taylor’s potential in Coed. His abilities as a play caller are perfectly suited for this division since it is even more predictable. The combination of Marco Bertoldi and Zach Zwirn can rival any team’s top 2 receivers. Once this team figures things out on defence, they will be even more of a force to be reckoned with.

4.     EZFun (3-1)

As the podcast would say, EZFun are false kings. Their 3-1 record does not paint the full picture. They got blown out by Power Rangers in week 1 and then struggled to beat Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce and Bishop Sycamore. Very simply put, this team can be sunk by a dominant rusher. I expect them to cleanup against the three teams ranked below them and to struggle against those above. Smells like a .500 season to me.

5.     Bishop Sycamore (0-4)

Yes, this is definitely my most controversial pick, but I am convinced that the 0-4 Bishop Sycamore are better than their initials. The one word description of this team is talented. They have absolutely everything they need to be champion contenders except a quarterback. Tommy Roadley Trohatos has been serviceable throughout the first three games and most importantly has been improving. He hung 30 on the Kittens last week and if he can keep improving, the sky is the limit for this team.

6.     Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce (0-3)

As I have already said, this team is stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are a Coed 2 team with a Coed 1 quarterback. JF Marquis can only carry this team so far.Until SHCS figure out how to improve their roster or fit into Coed 2, it’s going to be tough going in Coed 1.

7.     Average and Savage (0-2-1)

Unfortunately for Average and Savage, they are not even living up to the average part of their name. They are distinctly below average. What I love about this team are the women on the roster. Alexi Vitti is one of the best women in the division and she is surrounded by a very talented cast. Unfortunately, the quarterback play is just not up to Coed 1 levels.

Coed 2 Power Rankings

Please note that to avoid any bias, the first three teams were ranked by fellow writer Paolo Della Rocca.

1.     Kiss My End Zone (3-1)

David de Andrade needs to prove that he can protect the ball slightly better if this team wants to make a championship run. Despite that, they still have the best +/- ratio in the division.

2.     Y&Y (3-1)

Y&Y have finally got their quarterback in Robert White. I have already talked about White extensively in Y&Y’s game analysis but I expect him to get better and better as the season goes on. If White outperforms Kiss my End Zone’s David de Andrade down the stretch, Y&Y have a very good chance to climb into first place in these power rankings by the time the season ends. Aside from White, this is a loaded roster with established Coed 2 superstars like Ryan Dobbs-Garnett and Justin Weir.

3.     3HUNNAS (2-1-1)

This is the biggest surprise of the Coed 2 standings. 3HUNNAS had a dismal start to the season, but things turned around as soon as George Jean Louis took the reins of the offence. He has already passed for 368 yards, 12 TDs and no interceptions. In addition to Jean Louis, the emergence of Reka Sivasubramaniyam has played a huge role in 3HUNNAS’s success. She leads the team with thirteen receptions for 179 yards and four scores.

4.     Fitsquad (2-1-1)

Fitsquad is the most confusing team in Coed 2. This team beat Kiss My End Zone and tied La Secte. If that is not confusing, I don’t know what is. This team has all you want to see in a Coed 2 powerhouse. They have flag football experience and a  talented corps of male and female players. All they are missing is a legitimate quarterback. Despite having all the talent in the world Felix Goulet has struggled to adapt to the flag game. His overreliance on the deep ball has been his demise across his first few games.

5.     Team Commando (0-4)

Team Commande have far more potential then their 0-4 record suggests. Just last week, they came within a score of beating Y&Y. This is another team which has a very talented corps of receivers but are missing a legitimate quarterback. If this team could just clean up on a few turnovers, they will start quickly winning games.

6.     La Secte (0-2-2)

While La Secte are still winless, they have something other than losses on their record and the main reason for that is Alyson Francillon. He is emerging as one of, if not the best two-way player in Coed. While Francillon is the team’s main weapon, their overreliance on him is also their greatest weakness. If you take away Francillon, this offence struggles to move the ball.

Women’s 1 Power Rankings

1.     Les Bleus (4-0)

This was an extremely close call for the top spot between Les Bleus and Bleu Poud. The decision to place Les Bleus in fist all came down to quarterbacks. Les Bleus’ Sandrine Gobeil-Huot has yet to throw an interception while Bleu Poud’s Emmanuelle Bronsard has thrown two.

2.     Bleu Poud (4-0)

Apart from the extremely talented Emmanuelle Bronsard, my favorite thing about this team is their depth. In just four games, they have five receivers with over 100 receiving yards and multiple touchdowns. I cannot wait to see them take on Bleu Poud in week 6.

3.     Brutes (3-1)

I really wanted to slide the Griffons into this third spot, but the quality of the opponents that the Brutes have beaten make them a shoe-in here. They have multiple wins against Women’s 1 opponents, having beaten Concordia and The Rock as well as a convincing week 1 win over the Women’s 2 Strangers. The only thing I would like to see this team clean up are the turnovers. Seven interceptions in their first four games is just too many, especially when you consider that Les Bleus and Bleu Poud have thrown two combined.

4.     Griffons (2-2)

This is one of those teams that I struggle to write about because I know so little about them. There is not a single familiar name on this roster. While I might not have known Catherine Imbeault and Gabriella Dulac before, I certainly do know. The two have been just about unstoppable, combining for nearly 500 receiving yards and 9 TDs. As long as those two keep churning out yards and scores, the future is bright for the Griffons.

5.     Concordia (1-3)

I don’t care what their record is and I don’t care that they have yet to beat a single Women’s 1 team. I cannot put Sara Parker any lower than this. While she has struggled through the first four weeks, I hope that when she gets through this slump she will be the best passer in the division. As long as Concordia can squeak into the playoffs, Parker will be an issue.

6.     Les Flamants Roses (2-2)

While I am mildly concerned about the spelling of this team’s name (as explained in last week’s article) I am very concerned about their defence. They have conceded the most points of any Women’s 1 team and have only produced three interceptions. Unless this team can start creating turnovers, it might be a long season.

7.     The Rock (1-3)

The Rock’s offence is just a step behind the rest of the division. They have only scored 63 points in their first four games, which makes them the least productive offence in Women’s 1. This team needs to find a solution and quick on offence if they want to remain relevant.

Women’s 2 Power Rankings

1.     Volts (2-2)

The Volts only two losses came at the hands of Women’s 1 opponents. Impressively, they were even able to hang 24 points on the Flamants Roses and stay competitive in that game. Versus women’s 2 opponents, their defence has been nothing short of stellar, allowing only three scores in two games. The Volts are the team to beat in Women’s 2 and I have a hard time seeing any team doing that.

2.     Red Nation (1-3)

This spot was kind of a toss-up between Red Nation and the VC Cubs. Ultimately I wound up going with Red Nation because Jasmine Bethelmy is the best receiver in the Women’s 2 division. She has already put up 258 receiving yards and is simply not coverable by anyone in man coverage. As long as Red Nation keep on riding Bethelmy’s hot streak, they are in a great place.

3.     VC Cubs (1-3)

The most impressive player on this team is Amanda Townsend-Asselin. With four interceptions already to her name, she single handedly has more turnovers than some entire teams. Rounding out their terrifying secondary is Emma Townsend-Asselin who has three interceptions of her own. The Cubs need to realise that they will produce turnovers. All they need to do to win on offence, is protect the ball.

4.     Strangers (1-3)

The good news for the Strangers is that scoring is not an issue. They have the second most points for in Women’s 2 and just three less than the Volts. The downside of their high-risk offence is that they have also been picked off ten times. This team is getting better and their win last week versus the Cubs proves that. If they can start limiting turnovers while maintaining their offensive production, this team could go from zero to hero in a heartbeat.

I hope you all enjoyed this week’s power rankings! I will try to post an updated power rankings at some point in the second half of the season so you can monitor your team’s progress.

The downside of having power rankings this week was that I did not have room to include my weekly predictions. However, as a rule of thumb, if your team was ranked higher than your opponent, assume that I would have picked your team to win.

Good luck to everyone this week and I can always be reached at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.
