Coed 3 Report Cards
I have had a backlog of articles to get through, but it is now finally time to turn my attention to the report cards for Coed 3. While these are clearly no longer mid-season reports, I do think this is the perfect time to take a look at how each team is shaping up for the playoffs. Each team will receive a grade, from A through D. I will be evaluating teams based on both their performance so far as well as how they have fared compared to expectation. Let’s get started!
Coed 3 Report Cards
Fast Not Furious 3 (8-0)
Expectations grade: A
Performance grade: A +
There is not a lot to say about this team. They are fantastic and the top of the division. All of that dominance has started with the much improved QB play of Ryan Dobbs-Garnett. Last season Dobbs-Garnett was able to put up the yards, but he struggled with putting up an elite amount of touchdowns and was plagued with the interception bug. Both of those issues have been resolved this season. He has both the most yards and the most touchdowns in the division all while throwing the least interceptions. While Dobbs-Garnett might have felt that he was snubbed for QBOY in Coed 3 last season he is definitely on track to win that award this season. Outside of the play of Dobbs-Garnett, my favorite thing about this FNF3 offence is how good they have been at spreading the ball. Despite having absolute superstars at the receiver position like Oriola Poirier and Alexandre Noel, they have seven receivers with over 100 receiving yards and six of those have three TDs or more.
While this team’s offence is awesome, their defence has settled for being good so far this season. Yes, they have the second lowest points of any team in Coed 3, but I am holding this team to a higher standard than most. They consistently give up two scores to lower level teams and have given up even more to teams in the top third of the table. While this team is fantastic and the odds on favorite to win it all, the one area that could still use a little polishing up is their defence.
Drink Team (7-0-1)
Expectations grade: A +
Performance grade: A
No team has done a better job at surpassing expectations than Drink Team has. The only blemish on their record is a week 1 draw against Pig Six which means that they are technically still undefeated. This team is currently sitting at + 238 which means that they have scored 238 more points than they have conceded, which is an impressive feat. They have been getting extremely solid quarterback play from Alexandre Roel and Darryl Dorcely has done a great job stepping up in relief when Roel has been unavailable. All in all this team has thrown for 40 TDs and only five interceptions. Just like FNF3, Drink Team has excelled at spreading the ball around. The one thing that Drink Team does better than FNF3 and anyone else in this division is use their female receivers. The leading receiver on this team is Erika Magini who has over 240 receiving yards and 11 scores to her name in just 8 games. Laurence Girard and Bea Heneault have also done a great job of getting onto the scoresheet. This team has really embraced the coed nature of the division and they are reaping the rewards.
For all of the credit that I can pile on their offence, their defence is doing even better. The only player that has not recorded an interception this season is Darryl Dorecely, and he has 12 sacks and three defended passes instead. The rest of this team has combined for 27 interceptions on the season, which is over three a game. They are also allowing just over 10 points against a game which is phenomenal. Everyone is expecting Drink Team to face off against FNF 3 in the finals. The question that remains is whether Drink Team’s formidable defence will be enough to slow down FNF3’s high flying offence.
1-9ers (7-1)
Expectations grade: A
Performance grade: B +
The first thing you need to know about 1-9ers is that the talent gap between them and the top two teams in this division is huge and that all starts with how they use their female players. As we just talked about, Drink Team’s strength is how they use their female receivers. Things could not be more different for 1-9ers. They have completed just one touchdown to a female receiver so far this season and not a single one of their female receivers has cracked 100 receiving yards on the season. The reason why there are so few targets going the way of the women on this team is because Lucas Quenneville and Alexandre Blais have monopolized 70% of the targets so far this season. On the other hand, there is a reason why they are being targeted so heavily. They have combined for over 1000 yards and 28 scores. Early on this season I challenged this 1-9ers team to find ways to spread the ball, but they have not managed to do that. They have instead doubled down and focused on finding production from just two players. The question I have for their QB, Charles Presser, is what does he plan on doing when both Quenneville and Blais are covered. Granted, Presser has done a fantastic job of getting the ball into the hands of those two but he does not have chemistry of timing with the rest of this 1-9ers receiving corps.
For all of the talk about Quenneville and Blais on offence, Brandon Bagley deserves just as much hype on the defensive side of the ball. The season is not over yet and he already has 11 interceptions and four PDs to his name. Those are defender of the year numbers right there! Outside of Bagley, this team has also been getting production from Kevin Daniel who has a very respectable five picks on the season. All in all, this 1-9ers team is definitely good enough to beat up on teams in the lower half of this division. That being said, due to their lack of experience under center and issues in ball distribution I do not see them being able to compete with the top dogs in Coed 3.
Thunder Buddies (7-1)
Expectations grade: B –
Performance grade: B +
I had high expectations for this Thunder Buddies team entering the season and they have not quite lived up to those expectations. The first issue that has plagued this team has been the turnover bug. While Terry Babalis is a fantastic quarterback and has been putting up the numbers to back that up, he has thrown for the second most yards and TDs in the division, he has also thrown a dizzying number of interceptions. He has been picked off 13 times in nine games, which is nearly 1.5 picks thrown a game. As Babalis would be the first to tell you, it is extremely difficult to win games when you are turning the ball over that often. The first thing that this Thunder Buddies team needs to do if they want to have a chance of tackling one of the top teams is to limit the turnovers, and that all starts with Babalis playing smarter mistake free football. At the receiver position, this team has all of the weapons you could possibly want. They have one of the best receivers in FPF in William Power, a division 1 snapper in Jafar Hassan and an emerging talent in David Gutkovski. Simply put, they are loaded offensively.
Defensively, this team needs to get more production out of their star players. William Power is the kind of defender who you would expect to see record multiple interceptions if he were playing in division A or B, he is that good. For him to just have three in Coed 3 is disappointing. The same goes for David Gutkovski. He has played at the highest levels of FPF in his career and while he does lead this team with four picks, I cannot help but feel like they could be getting more out of him. Ultimately, in order for this team to win they need to flip the turnovers. They are currently throwing lots of picks and not producing many. As long as that remains the case, this team can kiss their title dreams goodbye.
Pig Six (5-3-1)
Expectations grade: B
Performance grade: B
This team has a franchise in Coed 2 called Pig 6 and they are one of the top teams in the division with a 5-1-1 record. Vincent Cheung is the QB for both of these teams and is frankly having a better season throwing in Coed 2 than in Coed 3 which is shocking. In Coed 3, Cheung has been alright but has not been stellar. His 960 yards and 26 TDs are all very average statistics. To be fair, he has added to those numbers with nearly 350 rushing yards and five scores on the ground. It is hard to pinpoint why exactly this team has not been doing better than they are. They are doing an excellent job of spreading the ball and an even better job of targeting their female receivers. As a matter of fact, the leading receiver on this team is Olivia Sormany with 323 receiving yards and seven scores. Tony Vo and Cesar Garcia-Diaz have also both been difference makers recording over 220 yards and eight scores each. Defensively, things once again pass the eye test. They have 18 interceptions on the season, which is two a game and Cesar Garcia-Diaz has been great recording seven of those picks himself. This team does a lot of things well, but does not have any one area where they are head and shoulders better than the competition. Until they can find that one area where they can dominate, this team will continue to struggle against top tier opponents.
We Love Big TDs (4-4)
Expectations grade: C +
Performance grade: B
This is another team with big time names that has under-delivered in Coed 3. This team has regrouped a lot of the guys from The Penetrators franchise into a Coed team. The issue seems to be that they forget that this was a Coed division, which means your female players are key. The leading female receiver on this team is Vicky Douan who has recorded less than 100 total yards in eight games. Behind Douan, Ally Steinberg has 70 receiving yards while Danielle Sager has four catches for 25 yards. All in all, this team is getting few yards and even less scores from their female players. No matter how good their male athletes might be, they will continue to struggle in this division until they can find a way to get the ball into the hands of their female receivers. Apart from that issue, this team is also struggling to produce turnovers. Just seven picks in eight games is not enough to be competitive in this division.
Les Crevettes (3-4)
Expectations grade: B
Performance grade: B
I knew just about nothing about this team heading into the season. After seven games, they have shown that they are a solid middle of the road team, and they have hope of finishing the season with a record of 500 or better. Two of their four losses came against Drink Team and FNF3, which are by far the two best teams in the division. They have fared well against other middle of the pack teams. If there is one thing this team does need to improve, it is their offensive production. Amongst the teams currently qualified for the playoffs, so the top 10, they have the least points scored. Part of the issue is that outside of Charles-Olivier Mongeau, they do not have a truly dominant receiver. Do not get me wrong, Mongeau is fantastic and is competing for a place on the division’s all-star team with his 279 receiving yards and five TDs, but no one else has really stepped up to the plate for this team. On defence, this team has struggled with applying pressure on opposing QBs. They have just five sacks on the season and no player has recorded more than two. I have full confidence that this team will continue to perform well against teams near them in the table, but until they can increase offensive production and pressure on the quarterback, climbing much higher in the standings will be a challenge.
Kamikaze (3-5)
Expectations grade: B
Performance grade: B –
This is another team new to the league and that I knew very little about during the first half of the season. What I do know now is that Alicia Lepins is a top tier receiver, but Kamikaze have struggled to get her or anyone else the ball. Both of their QBs have struggled to put up consistent numbers and have thrown nearly as many interceptions as they have touchdowns. The bright spot for this team has been their defense and especially the play of Gabriel Lemonde. He has already recorded an impressive five picks and seven defended passes. In total this team has 14 interceptions, which is a respectable number. While Kamikaze might have a solid defence, their offence has still not been able to keep up and that is why they are precariously perched at 5-3 and battling for a playoff spot.
TIGRES (3-5)
Expectations grade: C +
Performance grade: B –
I was expecting just a bit better from this Tigres team. I knew Mariève Girard and was expecting her to take the reins of this team going forwards. They chose to go a different route with Néstor Nacip Chávez Fayad under center and that has proven to be a rocky decision. While Nacip Chávez Fayad is a fantastic athlete, he proved this by rushing for nearly 500 yards, he has been struggling as a passer. Having seen this Tigres team play, they are great at marching the field when Nacip Chávez Fayad can run at will, but once this team enters the red zone and that run option disappears, things are much more difficult for this team. Defensively, this team needs to find a way to increase pressure on opposing QBs. four sacks in eight games, or half a sack a game, is just not enough.
Michael Scott’s Tots (3-5)
Expectations grade: C
Performance grade: C +
As one of the original Coed franchises, it was great to see Michael Scott’s Tots make another appearance in the division. Unfortunately, they returned without Evan Ely Nolet and have been struggling. Kenny Boutilier has taken over the reins of this offence and while he has avoided throwing double digit interceptions, he has only thrown nine so far, he has also had a hard time finding the end zone. If you are looking for a bright spot on this MST team it is definitely the play of Zackary Alberts-Gill. He has emerged as one of the top receivers in the division and definitely the best on his team. He has caught well over half of this team’s total touchdowns and has racked up 275 yards on the way. Alberts-Gill is best known as a rusher and you can tell why. He is leading this division with 12 sacks and shows no signs of slowing down. Despite a tremendous showing from Alberts-Gill, this team is barely holding onto the last playoff.
Free Agents (2-6)
Expectations grade: A
Performance grade: C
This team was never going to compete for the Coed 3 crown and even winning a game was looking like an uphill battle for the longest time. After dropping their first five games in a row, this team needed a saving grace and that saving grace came in the form of two Lorys. Lory Ouellette and Laury-Ann Potvin to be specific. The two Kiss My End Zone players came out to sub for FA in their game versus Tigres and thanks to a strong showing from them as well as one of the best games of QB Dallas Odem’s young career, they were able to secure their first win of the season. It was awesome to see the excitement on this team’s face as they completed the onside kick and then proceeded to ice the game for their first win, in dramatic fashion nonetheless! They kept the momentum going and secured their second win of the season just two weeks later then they rolled over Catching W’s. Look, this team still has a long way to go. Their offence needs to become more complex and their defence has to start producing turnovers consistently. It is still looking like a longshot for this team to make the playoffs, but it is great to see this underdog group secure their first two wins of the season.
Catching W’s (2-6)
Expectations grade: B –
Performance grade: C
The W’s have unfortunately been few and far between for this team in their inaugural season. Giordano D’Amico has struggled under center for them and they have gotten very little production out of their female players. If this team is looking for a sliver of good news, their next game versus Les Crevettes is a very winnable game and will serve as an important measuring stick to see how much this team has improved throughout the season. Despite the difficult season, Lorenzo Losciuto has emerged as a star for this team. He leads the team in touchdown receptions with 6 and is second in terms of yards with 210. The only player with more receiving yards is Enrico Morante, who is having quite the season as well. Defensively, Lorenzo Losciuto has an impressive four picks. Not to be outdone, the other Lorenzo on this team, Lorenzo Falso has four picks of his own.
DreamKillers (1-6)
Expectations grade: B –
Performance grade: C –
Unfortunately, not very much has gone according to plan for this DreamKillers team this season. While they did start off their season on high with a win versus Les Schtroumpfs, things have been going downhill since then. With three games remaining, this team would likely need to win all three to make the playoffs and with a game against Pig Six coming up on July 9th that does not look very likely. Jean-Daniel Ratté has been doing his best to keep the dream alive and has single handedly caught over half of this teams touchdowns. With 366 yards and nine scores he is one of the best receivers in the division.
Les Schtroumpfs (0-8)
Expectations grade: C
Performance grade: C –
Les Schtroumpfs are still looking for their first win and with games left versus Michael Scott’s Tots and We Love Big TDs I definitely think that this team can find a way to win at least one game this season. The first key to securing a win this season will be avoiding turnovers. Right now this team is throwing over 1.5 INTs for every TD they score and that will need to change. Before Jeremi Bedard tries completing deep and intermediate passes, he needs to get comfortable with completing the easy hooks and slants. His receivers also need to start giving him a hand. Their average receiver on this team has only caught half of the balls thrown their way which means, to me, that there are quite a few drops. The only player with a 100% catch percentage this season is Gabrielle Deschamps who has caught all twenty passes thrown her way for a total of 120 receiving yards and a score. The solution to getting this offence ticking might be throwing the ball Deschamps’ way a whole lot more! All in all, this team has had a brutal season but I have faith that if they can clean up the interceptions and the drops they should be able to secure their first win of the season sometime in the next two games.
