Coed 2 Power Rankings

Another Week of Coed action is in the books and as promised, it is now time for the Coed 2 Power Rankings. As a reminder, the goal of power rankings is not to duplicate the standings but rather give a critical analysis of each team and rank them from best to worse. Since there are considerably more teams in Coed 2 than in Coed 1, I will launch straight into the Power Rankings.

Coed 2 Power Rankings

1 – Fitsquad (5-0)

Fitsquad might have only played five games, but they are undefeated in those five games and are looking like the class of the division. The most important element of a successful coed team is generating production from your female players and that is something Fitsquad excels at. Frédéric Chevarie leads this team in receiving yards with 268. Defensively, Célestine Chartier, Alexie Galarneau and Tamara Boulanger have each recorded an interception. All in all, this Fitsquad defense has totalled 11 picks in just five games, which is an average of over two interceptions a game. When you compare the fact that they are picking off their opponents over twice a game with the fact that they have thrown just two interceptions all season you understand why this team is undefeated and atop the power rankings. The one concern I do have for Fitsquad is that they have had an easier start to their season. Their toughest opponent was LDN and they only beat them by 1 point. Their schedule for the rest of the season is not going to be easy. They are facing The Rookies (6-1)and the Cavaliers (5-1) in the next two weeks. If they can emerge from those two games against the second and third best teams in this division with two wins they should be guaranteed the top seed.

Predicted record: 8-2

2 – The Cavaliers (6-1)

The Cavaliers got off to a disastrous start to the season. They lost 34-6 in week 1 to Kiss My Christmas Balls and did not look great in that game. Juliette Beauvais threw five interceptions, including two pick sixes. It was not a  great outing for the Cavaliers. Luckily, they have rebounded in a huge way since that week 1 game. They have secured impressive wins against LDN, Bolas Profundas and The Rookies who are all amongst the top teams in the division. The way they have been securing these wins is even more surprising. The normal formula to success in FPF is producing one more stop than your offence gives up. In most cases that means producing 2 turnovers while only giving one up. The bad news for The Cavaliers is that they have already thrown ten interceptions. The good news is that they have also picked their opponents off 13 times and forced countless more turnovers on downs. This team is winning despite their offence and thanks to their defence which is very rare to see in FPF. What should have other teams worried is that this team’s offence is just continuing to improve. They have scored over 30 points in their last five games and Beauvais has started limiting the interceptions, throwing just one a game since their opening week loss to KMCB. If this offence can continue improving and their defence maintains this same level of play, they will be practically unstoppable.

Predicted Record: 8-2

3 – The Rookies (7-1)

Depending on which roster shows up, this team is somewhere between good and great. When they have all of their big names present, like Édouard Leroux and Charles Verreault, this team has one of the best rosters in the division and is practically unstoppable. However, this is a team that struggles with roster consistency. Leroux has only played two games while Verreault has played three. I am not sure if either will play the necessary five games to qualify for the playoffs. That being said, the players who have been there consistently for The Rookies have been producing in a big way. Mazen Ouali is the team’s leading receiver with over 300 receiving yards and eight scores. This team has also done a fantastic job of getting their female players involved in the offence. Elodie Simoneau and Meagan Trudel are this teams second and third leading receivers respectively. Together they have combined for over 300 yards and eight scores. This team has also been getting the job defensively and Gabriel Bélanger has been leading the charge. He has recorded four picks in the three games he played. While this team might have a solid record and appear to be one of the top seeds they are lacking a wow factor when Leroux and Verreault are not in the lineup. Without a star player, I think they will struggle to beat the top teams in the division.

Predicted Record: 7-3

4 – LDN (5-2)

This LDN team is sneakily good. Do not let their 5-2 record deceive you, they could easily finish the season as the top team in the division. This team’s weakness is their inexperience in the FPF game. They are averaging 13 yards per completed pass but are only completing 63.1% of their passes. Roughly half of this team’s roster is new to FPF so it makes sense that there are some growing pains as they get used to the game. To counterbalance that inexperience, this team has loads of talent and athleticism and that all starts at the quarterback position. Samuel Omombo is an awesome athlete. As a passer he has already thrown for nearly 1000 yards and has added an extra 110 rushing yards to that tally. Simply put, he is a matchup nightmare for just about any rusher in the division. His ability to extend the play and scramble when all else fails consistently causes problems for opposing defences. Stella Jean Georges is also a matchup nightmare for opposing defences. She is the team’s leading receiver and one of the best female receivers in the division. She already has 300 receiving yards and 9 scores in just six games. Simply put she is a matchup nightmare when lined up against just about any female player in the division. If this team continues improving and gets more familiar with the FPF game, they could very well finish the season as  champions.

Predicted record: 6-4

5 – Kiss My Chirstmass Balls (3-3)

Once you get past the top four teams in this division, things get extremely tight and differentiating this group of teams is not  an easy task. I have Kiss My Chirstmass Balls as my top team because of the quality of the opponents they have faced and the upside of this roster. They are the only team to have beaten the Cavaliers this season and were competitive against Bolas Profundas, The Rookies and Back That Pass Up. Simply put, I have this team as above teams with other similar or even better records because of their upside. William Power is probably the best two way player in the division and they have a very well rounded corps of female players. The addition of Marieve Girard has been a find for this team. She has been a reliable snapper and has a fantastic understanding of opposing defences. Girarsd normally plays quarterback so her ability to find the soft spot in opposing defences is elite. The connection between her and QB Paolo Della Rocca is strong and continuing to grow, which should be a scary proposition for other teams in this division. The issue with KMCB so far this season is whenever their offence has performed well, their defence has had a bad game and when their defence has been able to produce stops their offence has struggled. They have yet to put together a game where both their offence and defence are firing at all cylinders. If they are able to perform to the best of their offensive and defensive abilities game in and game out, this team could be one of the better teams in the division.

Prredicted record: 6-4

6 – Bolas Profundas (4-4)

It is very hard to know which Bolas Profundas you will get on any given week. Sometimes you will get the Bolas Profundas that scored 31 points against a good KMCB defence and sometimes they will just score 12 points against one of the division’s weaker defences. Whenever I have played against this team they have been just about unstoppable. The connection between Bruno Provencher and Francois Rocheleau is a lethal one. However, I cannot explain why this team sometimes just comes up flat. I have been wracking my head for a reason or defensive coverage that could stop this team and I have not found one. I think the best way to describe Bolas Profundas is that they are their own worst enemy. While they could beat just about any given team on any given night, they could also lose to any team in this division if they are having an off game. While it is scary to face this Bolas Profundas since you never know which version of them you will get, they would need more consistency to rank higher in these power rankings

7 – Back That Pass Up (4-4)

Back That Pass Up are a good team, but are missing a wow factor. They have a solid core and that all starts with the impressive quarterback play of Jason Rossie. He has gotten the job done this season, throwing for over four scores a game all while averaging less than one interception a game. While Rossie is definitely not the reason that this team is losing games, he is also not the reason they are winning games. He is yet to have a game where he has lifted his team to victory. The same can be said about the rest of this BTPU team. Justin Anania and Chris Brockwell are both great receivers, but could be better described as possession receivers, rather than gamebreakers. The player who has impressed me the most so far this season is Jasmine Rossie. In her first season in the league she has already posted over 200 receiving yards and six scores. To summarize, this is a solid team with very few weaknesses. However, there is also very little that excites me about this team. They will beat the teams they are supposed to beat but do not have that X factor needed to upset one of the top dogs in the division.

Predicted record: 4-6

8 – Kamikaze (3-5)

The reason why this Kamikaze team is in this 8th spot and not lower is definitely Alexis Ferrand. He has been at the centre of everything good for this team offensively this season. He is their leading receiver with 309 yards and nine scores and has even filled in at QB when needed. Outside of Ferrand, this team’s other go-to receiver has been Rachel Shea. She has consistently been able to get open, against man and zone coverage which has led her to be the most targeted player on this team. She has 27 catches on the season, for a total of nearly 250 yards and three scores. While Ferrand and Shea are great receivers, my concern about this team is their inability to score. Their quarterback Gabriel Lemonde has only scored 18 touchdowns in the five games he has played, which is less than four touchdowns a game. It is hard to consistently win games in FPF when scoring less than 4 times a game. What Gabriel Lemonde has struggled to do on offence, he has made up for on defence. He is this team’s leading defensive back with three interceptions. He even managed to return two of those picks for scores.

Predicted record: 4-6

9 – Who’s Gonna Carry The Boats (2-5)

This Who’s Gonna Carry The Boats team might not have the most impressive record, but they have done a good job of keeping things close against the top teams in the division. Their two wins came against Back That Pass Up and Bolas Profundas who are not bad teams. They also made things very close against The Rookies and KMCB.  This team has the ability to hang in there against the top teams but struggles to put those games away. This team’s biggest issue has been turnovers. Alexandre Szalipszk has thrown a staggering 15 interceptions in just 7 games. On the other hand, their defence has just produced 11 interceptions. This team is turning over the ball far more often than they are picking off their opponents, and that is rarely a formula for success.

Predicted record: 3-7

10 – Pig 6 (2-4)

This is a team that I had high hopes for. Seth Galina is a good quarterback and has had success in the Coed divisions so for him to have thrown only 13 scores in four games is shocking. While Galina has never been an electric quarterback throughout his career, he has been able to consistently score at least four times a game which leads me to wonder what the issue is this season. I think this team’s issue is that they struggle against man coverage. Galina is not a very mobile passer which allows opposing teams to use a female rusher and drop three guys into coverage. Since this Pig 6 is lacking a true #1 receiver who can create separation against man coverage, opposing defences feel very comfortable manning up against this team and that is bad news for Galina. He excels at dissecting opponents’ playing zone, but does not have the touch and accuracy to thrive against tight man coverage. The best player for this Pig 6 team has been Thomas Chaussé and he has only played three games with them so far. In those three games, he has recorded four interceptions.

Predicted record: 3-7

11 – Nighthawks Mix (1-7)

There is a lot to like about this Nighthawks Mix team, Stefano De Seta has been one of the best two-way players in Coed this season. In addition to his five interceptions, he has nearly 500 receiving yards and 12 scores. Marc Antoine Martin has been a secondary threat for this team as he is also hovering near the 500 yard mark and has four picks to his name. That being said, this team’s big weakness is the lack of production from their female players.  They have combined for less than 200 receiving yards and just 4 scores. This team was supposed to have Reka Sivasubramaniyam who is a fantastic receiver but she has been out for the season with a finger injury. This team’s other weakness has been the turnovers. They have thrown a whopping 17 interceptions. If they cannot find a way to limit those turnovers it is looking unlikely that they will make the playoffs

Predicted record: 1-9

12 – Air Force (1-7)

This is a team that would have benefited from starting off their FPF journey in Coed 3 instead of Coed 2. While this team has lots of talent and athleticism, they are lacking FPF experience and that lack of experience has led to a difficult season. Samuel Langlais has had a rough start to his FPF career under centre. He has thrown more interceptions than he has touchdowns and has just completed 40% of his passes. On the bright side, he has been able to add 300 yards and 3 touchdowns of offence through the rushing game. Another promising sign for this team has been the contributions of their female players. Ève Leduc and Christavie Jumelle have each recorded an interception. This team has a lot of good pieces in place, but before they can be considered serious contenders they will need to gain a lot more FPF experience. If I had a suggestion for this team it would be to slowly climb the ranks. There is no shame in starting out in Coed 3 and slowly earning your stripes.

Predicted Record: 1-9

There you have your coed 2 power rankings! I am sorry that these took some time to be published. I was coming back from vacation and while this article was started a week ago during a layover in an airport, it took much longer than expected to wrap it up.

As always, you can reach me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns about the article.
