Coed 1: Early Power Rankings

The Coed 1 winter season is heating up! With several games in the books, teams are beginning to establish their identities as contenders, hopefuls, or those still finding their footing. The power rankings will be the top 8 as only 8 of 12 teams make the playoffs. The season just started so many teams have only played 1-2 games so far, the rankings are expected to shift over the next few weeks as teams find their footing and rhythm.

Power Rankings:

1. Plenty of Fish (1-1)

This team is the defending winter ’24 champs, where they defeated The IG Team in the finals, expect them to enter the season with high expectations. In spring ’24 the franchise team had a heartbreaking one-point playoff loss, playing shorthanded with just 6 players available to play, and still managed to explode for 50 points with Maude Lacasse throwing 8 touchdowns and 270 passing yards. After opting out of fall ’24, they return with a vengeance and look every bit the team to beat in winter ’25. Definitely no stranger to tight games decided by one-point, as they lost the season opener 40-41 to Hooshmazoos in an offensive shootout, though Plenty of Fish bounced back with a dominant win over BanaNiceTry, exploding for 54 points. This performance solidified their position as the highest-scoring offence in the division. Leading the charge is Maude Lacasse, who has accounted for 13 total touchdowns in just 2 games and already looks in midseason MVP form. This team’s chemistry from many seasons together, is unmatched in Coed 1. They can adapt seamlessly to each opponent, with Julian McLaren-Thompson, arguably the best rusher in FPF at disrupting mobile quarterbacks. I have confidence this group will tighten up defensively as the season progresses.

2. The IG Team (1-0)

The IG Team without star quarterback Jeanslee Alexis, no problem, Samuel Omombo made an immediate impact stepping in at quarterback, throwing 6 touchdowns and adding 52 rushing yards in the team’s debut. This squad has the potential to boast the best defence in the division, striking a perfect balance of speed, size, and experience. Against Hooshmazoos, they showcased their ball-hawking defence with 4 team interceptions, but they also allowed 32 points and managed just 3 tackles as a unit. If they can clean up their tackling and limit the occasional big play, this unit is as scary as it gets for opposing offences. The return of Jeanslee Alexis to the lineup defensively adds even more versatility, as his ability to make tackles anywhere on the field and cover large areas will significantly help limit big plays. Offensively, Stella Jean Georges was electric, racking up 86 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns on only 2 receptions. The IG Team is poised to make another finals run.

3. The Merge (2-0)

The Merge is off to a strong start this season, with an undefeated record and an impressive win over Dominos. Marc-Andre Reeves, a new face in Coed 1, has lead a balanced and efficient offence. Lory Ouellette has been the key weapon on offence, scoring 3 receiving touchdowns in 2 games, while Serge Pilon has anchored the defence with 3 interceptions, returning 2 of them for touchdowns. Their victory over a stacked Dominos roster showcased their ability to compete with top-tier teams. As one of the teams to have already played 2 games, they’ll aim to stay consistent and prove why they deserve the #3 ranking or have plans to move higher.

4. BanaNiceTry (2-1)

BanaNiceTry has had a rollercoaster start to the season, with impressive wins over Dominos and Monarchs, only to be humbled by Plenty of Fish in their most recent outing. They may boast the most quarterback depth in the division; however, depth alone doesn’t guarantee success—chemistry, timing with receivers, and maintaining game flow are just as crucial when it comes to winning football games. Jeff Rosenblatt has been the backbone of their offence, showcasing his ability to spread the ball effectively. Noah Groper remains their go-to playmaker, racking up 6 receiving touchdowns so far. They’ll need to tighten up defensively, but their bounce-back ability makes them a team to watch as the season progresses.

5. Dominos (0-2)

Despite their winless record, Dominos have been competitive in every matchup. The goat, Kevin Wyeth debuts in Coed 1 and his precision passing has been a bright spot. Particularly with Rachelle Vallieres who has emerged as his favourite target, already leading the team with 11 receptions on 15 targets. She has been a dominant scoring threat, accounting for 4 receiving touchdowns through the first 2 games. However, defensive lapses and an inability to close out games have cost them a winless start. Dominos undoubtably have the biggest x-factor in the division being Kevin Wyeth at quarterback, and they could easily turn things around. Once the first domino falls, it triggers a chain reaction that can’t be stopped—when this team figures it out and gains momentum, it will be impossible to stop them.

6. Pass Whoopin’ (1-0)

Pass Whoopin’ made a strong opening statement with their 37-12 victory over Fitsquad. As the spring ’24 coed 1 champions, this team carries high expectations after opting out of fall ’24, and they wasted no time showing why they’re a contender. Quarterback Chris Rivest protected the ball well, throwing 4 touchdowns with no interceptions, but took an uncharacteristic 4 sacks, a rare lapse for the quarterback. Emerson Peterkin was unstoppable, contributing 3 receiving touchdowns and consistently finding space in the defence. On the other side of the ball, their defence shone brightly holding their opponent to 12 points, with Jerome Hovington snagging 2 interceptions and returning one for a touchdown. With a solid balance on both sides of the ball and championship pedigree, Pass Whoopin’ looks like a team ready to climb higher in the rankings.

7. Kiss My End Zone (0-0)

Yet to play their first game, Kiss My End Zone enters the season surrounded by high expectations. As the reigning fall ’24 coed 1 champions, they’ve proven they can win, but this winter season brings a whole new level of competition, with powerhouse teams like Plenty of Fish and The IG Team returning to the mix. The winter division is widely regarded as the toughest test in coed 1, and this season will reveal whether Kiss My End Zone’s championship was a fluke, benefiting from top teams sitting out, or if they truly belong among the elite. The team has kept the same roster intact but made a big splash by adding James Drysdale. However, their season opener against #1 ranked Plenty of Fish this sunday will be the ultimate test. Adding a twist, Drysdale may not make his debut just yet, as he’s currently in Tampa, but it also provides an opportunity for the returning champs to prove their depth and resilience.

8. Hooshmazoos (1-1)

There are undoubtedly questions about how Hooshmazoos managed to beat the #1 ranked Plenty of Fish yet find themselves ranked at #8. Plenty of Fish are the defending winter champions, boasting the most explosive offence in the division, and one game doesn’t erase their consistent pedigree. That said, Hooshmazoos is a team with its own set of challenges. With 14 players already on the roster and uncertainty each week about who will be available, consistency has often been a struggle for them. While they’ve proven they can compete with and beat the best teams on any given night, sustaining that level of play over a full season is still in doubt. Xavier Couture has been the heart of this team on both offence and defence. He racked up 145 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in their loss to The IG Team, and in their win against Plenty of Fish, he made a huge impact defensively with 2 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. This team has the potential to challenge anyone, but whether they can consistently put it all together remains to be seen.
