Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 7 Review
Week 7 is in the books. Time to take a look at what happened, see where I went wrong after a great start to my predictions, and take a glance at what lies ahead for week 8 in this wild & whacky division. A few random league-wide thoughts will also be shared as some crazy numbers got put up on the board.
I am simply copy/pasting my frustrations with attempting to decipher the possibilities due to all of the roster movement. Things continue to be crazy with the inter-division play as we have a handful of players who must choose which team they will play for. We also continue to see defaults and teams scrambling on FB or at the complexes to field a squad.
Thoughts & random opinions (league wide)
- Kevin Wyeth continues to prove why he has all of the hardware. He continues his assault on defences this Spring. I am simply leaving this comment here for the rest of the season. He is back on top for Yards & TDs.
- Mat Rene continues his hot play and got rewarded with the W this week.
- Is it just me or does anyone else find it weird to see the same names TWICE in the stat columns? Paul Lapierre is #1 (2 ½ Alkaholiks) and #5 (#NR) on the Receivers list. Another comment that I am simply leaving here until it no longer applies! (He would be higher but had to play QB at times for #NR)
- Would not have thought that #NR would put up a 50Burger without Cory Pecker, but they did.
- Jeff Rosenblatt tired himself out in his 8 PM DC game with Keyport Lock as he went off for 25/34-337-8 TDs. Silly night compared to the crash & burn that followed at 9 PM
- Keeping with the 35+ Players we also saw Craig “Owie” O’Brien have a great night for Past Our Prime finishing 22/28-303-8 TDs.
- Owie leaned heavily on Matt Kirouac in this game as he finished 9-111-5 TDs (or was that 117 yards?). Matt also chipped in the TRIFECTA on defence with a tackle, INT, and Sack
- Further stats from the Old Men…Dave Allen tossed 7 TDs for Green Means GO! In DE.
- Not sure which is crazier: Olivier Doleyres (Tough Lungs) with 6 Sacks or Simon Provencher (Jean Guy) with 4 INTs
- Almost hitting the century club in rushing yards was Charles-Olivier Lavigne (All Hooks) who finished with 91 yards on the ground. That is crazy
Division A/B Week #7 review
Dirty Dawgs battle but fall short to #NR – 51-37
What I wrote: #NR is in the part of the schedule where they get to take on the DB teams and get back in sync. I look for Cory Pecker to continue his efficient season against the MTM defence played by the Dirty Dawgs. As for the Dirty Dawgs, a week without a FB advertisement would be a cool thing.
What happened: As mentioned above, #NR was without Cory Pecker for this one. Because people are too cheap to buy shirts with #s on them only Paul Lapierre appears on the stat sheet. A quick look at the roster shows Mario Porreca filling in. As a result of this bizarre division he has been able to throw against different DB teams without having to get released…fun stuff! 6 different receivers found the end zone for #NR while Patrick Jazon took home a Pick 6 on D to make it 7 different people scoring majors. Definitely gets chalked up as a TEAM victory. For the Dawgs the one shining light was Dave Chityat. He led the way on offence for the squad with 3 of Ryan Lelinowski’s TD passes. Both Rushers put up big numbers as Angelo Mourelatos had 3 sacks and Francois Hogue had a sack and FIVE PDs!
Outsiders bomb the 2 ½ Alkaholiks 57-26
What I wrote: Conventional vs. Unorthodox. The contrast in QB styles in this game is actually quite comical although both are quite efficient at what they do. While Kevin should not have many issues in scoring against the 2 ½ defence, how many opportunities he gets will be determined by Joey Taylor who will be slowing this game WAY down. Look for the Outsiders to get the W but not by that many points.
What actually happened: So much for keeping it close. Kevin Wyeth had another productive day at the office finishing 21/23. Seriously? Either Brandon Aylward rushed from 10 yards out or the defence played 15 yards off. 5 different receivers found the end zone for the Outsiders with Pat Jerome leading the way with 3 scores. Serge Pilon with a strong two-way game 3-56 with a TD on offence and 4 tackles and a PICK 6 on D. The 7th Outsider to hit the end zone was KW who also chipped in a Rushing TD. Not much in the way of bright lights for the Alks but Zach Zwirn had his best game of the Spring Season with 9 receptions for 82 yards.
Braves bully Lightweight 42-13
What I wrote: The ceiling continues to come crashing down for Lightweight. Happy that they did much better than I expected but the past few weeks have definitely played out as I though their season would flow. I give them credit for stepping up into the void, but the Braves are going to take this game regardless of who is missing from their roster.
What actually happened: While the Braves did not put up a tremendous amount of yardage, INTs and 4th down stops keep you from having to do so. Jonathan Maheu had an extremely efficient evening as he finished 13/16 with 5 TDs. Alex Pilon led the charge on both sides of the ball with 3 TDs and 8 Tackles. This game could have gone differently but a PICK 6 to start things off and then missing a GO route on the second drive had them playing from behind. Simon Dagenais found himself under pressure throughout the evening. When you do not have the quickest release and you get to face Julien Paiement you are going to need some help from the receiving corps. That did not happen. Watch the film for more details.
After starting the week 3 for 3 I quickly unraveled with my predictions…damn SJB holiday!
Jasmin N Sons edged by BYOB 31-27
What I wrote: The GOTW in my mind. Both QBs are playing really good ball right now. Frederic Viens is getting rewarded and Mathieu Rene is not. Look for them both to crack 30 points in this game with Anthony Vendrame being the difference maker.
What actually happened: Great game in terms of parity. When you can limit a QB to 153 yards on 23 completions then your defence is keeping things in front of them and making tackles. That was the story for BYOB. They have some BIG DBs who clog lanes and can run with anyone if need be. Everything that Fred Viens seemed to have been a “check down” as BYOB played disciplined football. Mathieu Rene, with more of his normal “gunslinger” approach to things, finished with 185 yards on his 13 completions with 5 going for TDs. A quick shout out to a former team-mate, M-A Lapointe, who is playing great two-way football for multiple teams this season. 2 TDs and a PD in this game, a PICK 6 for the Braves, he seems to be everywhere regardless of which team he is suiting up for.
Dream Killer put Dad Bod to sleep 12-6
What I wrote: Both QBs had back to back great games against the Outsiders, channeling their Inner Kevin Wyeth, matching up against the HoF QB stride for stride. Unfortunately, the rest of their body of work has not been as impressive. Avraam has the better squad around him, and we have finally seen signs of Gualano and Gomes coming to life. Rosenblatt can control the tempo of the game a bit better. Watch this one come down to converts with Dad Bod slipping away with the W
What actually happened: UGH what a stinker of a game. Dad Bod opened things up with a score and then wen 0’fer the rest of the night. I have been harshly critical of Sean Avraam this season because of the results he is putting up with the talent on this squad. 13 completions against the Dream Killers D, regardless of any reason/excuse, should be a cause for concern. The defence did their job as they shut out Jeff Rosenblatt in the first half (still tired from celebrating his 8 TD performance moments earlier) and held him to 117 total yards. TSN turning point is Jon Lyristis with 1-yard TD catch for the difference maker in this one.
YCSWU shocked by the Alpha-T’s 42-35
What I wrote: Alpha-T’s seem to be the team to beat in DB. Unfortunately for them, YCSWU do not need any criteria and simply remain THE TEAM TO BEAT. YCSWU give up both points and yards so this will be a bit of a shootout. Thankfully for them their offence, led by QBOTY candidate, Alex Holowach, is up for the challenge.
What actually happened: Lots of YCSWU players with a double header on the evening. Did it play a factor? Their defence made tackles but made no plays in space as the Alpha-T’s played smart, ball control football. Jesse Dupuis was awesome as he finished 20-24-189 yards and added 27 more with his legs. He also led his team with 6 tackles so quite the evening for the big guy. Alexis Gaumont FINALLY breaks out. I have been waiting for him to do this all season long. Such a talent but needs a bit more drive. 6-75-2 TDs and 5 tackles on D with a PD. Anthony Lapointe chipped in with 3 BIG TDs from the Center spot. YCSWU were led by potential ROTY Justin McLean as usual as he found the end zone twice. An oddly inefficient outing for Alex Holowach, finishing 20/30 on the night.
Carmine’s Players of the Week
Dave Chityat (Dirty Dawgs) – 7-113-3 TDs
Francois Hogue (#NR) – 5 PDs???? And a sack??? Ryan Lelinowski needs to change his throwing angles
Kevin Wyeth (Outsiders) – 21/23-286 with 7 TDs
Pat Jerome (Outsiders) – 7-108-3 TDs and an INT on D
Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon (BYOB) – 5-80-2 TDs and 3 Tackles / 3 PDs on defence
Alexis Gaumont (Alpha-T’s) – 6-75-2 TDs & 5 Tackles / 1 PD on defence
The week ahead
#NR host the Alpha-T’s
51 points without Cory Pecker. What would they have done with him there? TATs looked truly impressive against YCSWU last week. Jesse Dupuis continues to impress, and Alexis Gaumont finally woke up last week. I have said, more than once, that #NR are the best DB team playing but who are in DA. I might have to change that statement after this game. Going to be close but I like the gents in orange to win this one
Dream Killers face Jasmin N Son
Ah the rematch. The first game was not close as JNS walked away with a 43-24 victory. Fred Viens did not have a great game last week and will be anxiously awaiting his opportunity to get the loss out of his mind. For the Dream Killers, which Jeff Rosenblatt shows up? The one who rose to occasion against Kevin Wyeth or the one who went slumming with Sean Avraam last week? I think that Jeff will bounce back but that Frederic does the better job. JNS for the W
Dirty Dawgs host the Braves
Here’s hoping that the FB wall stays quiet for a second week. Not that it will make much of a difference. The Braves are simply the better team. Jonathan Maheu is having an extremely controlled season, even without Georges Gariepy who has only made 2 games so far. Alex Pilon & MA Lapointe have been difference-makers on both sides of the ball and I cannot see that trend ending this week.
2 ½ Alkaholiks face the Dad Bod
On paper this looks like a great game. Both teams sit at 3-4 and lost last week after a victory the week before. Both have some big-time play makers (Paul Lapierre & Vinny Gualano to name a couple) and both squads have QBs who can be very hot or completely off. I don’t think that Paul Lapierre will let his team lose this game. His presence and leadership will be the difference
BYOB host Lightweight
This will go down as an upset because of their current records but BYOB are playing MUCH better football at this point in the season than Lightweight. The two teams had dramatically different starts to the season and are currently going in different directions. Mathieu Rene is playing his style of ball and Simon Dagenais is not getting the support he needs. Both teams will be 4-4 after this one
Outsiders square off with YCSWU
Game of The Week material right year. YCSWU took the first meeting 38-34 and I know that Kevin Wyeth has had this game circled on his calendar ever since. The two QBs lead DA/B in every relevant category and are in control of their offences. Both have big play talent (Pat Jerome vs Anthony Vendrame) and both teams give up yards on defence. The edge in this game will be Serge Pilon. Outsiders even the season series in my mind.
