Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 3 Review & a look ahead
35+ Division
Carmine’s Coffin Corner
Week 3 recap and a look ahead to Week 4
Week 3 is now in the books. I must admit to being a fan of the new venue for watching games. I strongly miss the old venue as the PUB was a solid advantage over the empty room, with little to no ambiance, that is found on the second floor of the Baie d’Urfe complexe. Call me different but I would rather pay a couple of dollars more for music, TVs, hot food, and a variety of tasty beverages. My wallet likes the BYOB concept but still.
Being a long-time 49ers/Montana fan (including his ND days), I am happy with the results of last weekend and am looking forward to the game. Hopefully I will get the chance to watch it…work travel might cause issues.
Random 35+ thoughts
- First hour of games last week were one-sided affairs. Plenty of great plays from all teams but no drama to be found anywhere.
- All 3 Tiers are led by undefeated squads
- All 3 Tiers will have the same teams leading them regardless of the results this week. Lack of drama?
- It seems that the Spitfire are not dead after all as they played well on both sides of the ball for the first time this year.
- Spitfire got to battle Jordan Rossie in week 3 and not get brother Jason in week 4. Interesting scheduling
- Robbie Robinson & Cory Pecker sit 1-2 in every QB stat. Weird to see Cory’s name as he normally cannot be bothered to wear a numbered jersey…LOL
Random league thoughts
- D1: You could have taken a considerable amount of money from me had we wagered that Got Skills would be in first place and STL would be winless after 3 weeks. Like a lot of money.
- D1: STL with only 66 PF in 3 games. Not going to cut it when your D gives up 99. Way too much talent on this squad for this situation not to reverse itself
- D1: FMS is somehow 2-1 with only 59 PF in 3 games? Second best PA (to Got Skills) but still find themselves at -20
- D1: Jonathan Maheu continues to roll with another 7 TD game, but it is the 2Way Monster in Georges Gariepy who makes things roll, ignore the juke box #s put up by the 2 midgets they have. A TD on offence to go with 2 INTs on D (PICK 6 to boot) and that is why he makes things go
- D2: Bad Boys are on a run. Pat Chenard is first in yards and second in TDs as a QB. His offence is a two headed monster with Nic Arseneault-Hum and Matt Bond #1-2 in receiving yards. Big drop off after that and Chenard almost makes the top 4 somehow??
- D2: Taco Tuesday with only 53 PA makes life easy for their QB, Sean Avraam. No need to be perfect with that support
- D2: Killa Bees with the upset of the week as they knock off the appropriately named Underachievers 2.0 a week after being shut out. Well done
- D3: Dirty Dawgs look like they finally have a somewhat steady roster. After multiple seasons of game day Facebook drama scrambling for players, they have 8 players with 2 GP already and 14 who have suited up. Ryan Lelinowski with a 6 TD game this past week.
- D3: Always good to see the Old Men do well. Craig O’Brien leading P.O.P. to a victory with 7 TD passes. Also cool to see a former teammate, Ty Hoas (the original 2 Way POTY in 2005) keep slugging away with 6-70-1TD on O and a Sack/PD on D
- D3: Speaking of former teammates/Old Men, Jason Rossie led JYD to a big 43-15 victory with 6 TDs and 16 rush yards to boot
- D4A: Keeping things going on the Old Man trail is Stephen Harripersaud leading the Outlaws to a 34-20 win last week. The 35+ vet had 5 passing TDs and got a big assist from another former teammate, Isiah Allard, who had 2 TDs and 3 INTs on defence
- D4B: Ballers lost but BBallers won. Who lets these names into the same division? Also saw two teams get shut out…still weird to see that happen in FPF
- D5A: If 2 shutouts in a week look weird, how about 3 TIE games? Big Baller Brand 6-6 against the Longhorns. Strange to see the LH held to 6 points. GLC and Brotherhood Lite squared off at 26 each. Finally, the GloGang and Ducks & Cover both notched 18 points.
WEEK 2 REVIEW (due to injury I am still not playing. Our game was on the far field so did not catch all of field 1 action)
Pacemakers 13 Old Age Outlaws 41
What I wrote: Winner of this game will lead the Tier. This should be a fun game to watch as Jason Rossie and Stephen Harripersaud square off. After an off week look for Stephen to get back into his normal game and wear down the Pacemakers. I have little doubt that the Pacemakers are going to come out swinging in an attempt to get the foul taste of their last game out of their mouths. If Jason has his full roster, I am expecting him to take some deep shots early and often. I think that the Pacemakers take this game and move into first place
What actually happened: This might be the first time that I see Jason Rossie completely baffled as a running QB. The Old Age Outlaws kept him completely in check and forced him to make several off-balance throws. Pressure was consistent every time that I looked over. The one stat that is not kept by FPF, that really gets overlooked, is the Turnovers on Downs. Rossie threw no INTs but the continual stops meant that OAO had some short fields to work with and Stephen Harripersaud took advantage. He finished 12-14 for 6 TDs. When you only need to accumulate 159 yards to get 6 TDs you have a short field. Adam Durant did a great job on the Rush and, at one point, I looked over and literally said WTF?? as he took a handoff from Harripersaud in true Run/Pass Option style. I cannot say that I have ever seen that before in 35+. Josh Levine making the most of his 3 receptions and all of them reached the end zone
Grumpy Old X-Men 0 MTL Spitfire 37
What I wrote: Speaking of bitter tastes…the Spitfire are still looking to play a consistent game this season. While Avraam looked much better in his second game, he was not helped by the receiving corps. For the GOXM they are also adjusting to life with a new pivot as Jordan Rossie has struggled this season as well. Something has to give in this game, and I think the Spitfire defence will be the difference
What actually happened: Evidently the Spitfire defence heard me as they came to play and ended up tossing a shutout in this one. It began with a Jimmy Coupethwaite INT on the first GOXM drive and it ended on a PD by Ryan Hector. Sean Avraam had his best 35+ game of his young career as he hit 7 different receivers and finished 20-24-249 for 6 TDs. Hugo Dupuy and Sean Kennedy both had big games with 2 TDs each. Defensively the Spitfire were paced by Jeff Brown with had 7 tackles and 2 PDs. For the GOXM, Jordan Rossie had some success when he used his legs (4-37) but the defensive scheme from the Spitfire forced some ill-advised throws.
PAZAZZ 38 JMJ 20
What I wrote: So many questions to be answered. Will Jon Moodie be healthy enough to play and if so, does he throw? Cory Johnson looked good last week and might merit the start regardless of Moodie’s health. Where does Rob Allen fit in Eugene’s offence? 6 receptions in 2 games is not normal for him. If they were 2-0 you might be able to justify it but at 0-2 you need to start getting him the ball.
What actually happened: The questions that revolve around JMJ remain. Cory Johnson started this game but struggled at times. I did not get the chance to see/chat with Jon Moodie so am still not sure what is up. Brian Eudoxie continues to be the motor behind the JMJ squad as he leads everything on both sides of the ball. Now he needs the supporting cast to step up. PAZAZZ answered the Rob Allen question as he chipped in with 3 receiving TDs and an INT on defence. He is simply too good not be used more often. Eugene also took some the matters in his own hands with 27 yards on the ground. A well-deserved victory which will make those adult beverages all that tastier.
Polvige 32 FPF 41
What I wrote: First place on the line in this match-up of 2-0 teams. The two new “rookie” QBs will square off as Robbie Robinson and Ryan Kastner lead their teams in search of the 3-0 record. Robbie might have just as much of an impact on the defensive side of things and is the difference maker. Should be interesting to see who Polvige send at him on the rush. I do believe that Addley Dufour is their best option, but he is also one of their best coverage defenders. Should be fun
What actually happened: Both QBs finished with 17 completions, 200 yards, and 5 TDs. However, as mentioned above, RR can be a difference maker on defence as well and his PICK 6 was the difference in the score. This was a fun game that went back & forth. While RR made the difference on the scoreboard, the real difference maker was Lonnie Johnson who rolled back the clock and went off for 6-109-3 TDs catching the ball. Chatted with him after the game an he still was ready to run routes. I got the impression that he was frustrated that Polvige felt they could man him up. If that was indeed their strategy it definitely failed.
OAS 39 Monster 33
What I wrote: We end the night with yet another first place showdown. Andy Peterkin is going to have to be as effective this week against the OAS rush as he was against the Spitfire. If he can slow things down and move the chains with his legs when need be then this will be a good game. If he can’t do that then we will see why OAS is +59 through 2 weeks.
What actually happened: We did end the evening with a last possession wins type of game. Andy Peterkin was absent for this one so Craig “Owie” O’Brien took the helm. He did an admirable job matching Cory Pecker TD for TD for most of the night. Shane Williams and Kevin Wyeth paced the OAS offence finishing with 14 receptions and 5 TDs. Both figured prominently on defence as well with 7 tackles 2 INTs, and 2 PDs. Monster saw Domenic Tosi finally given a lead role on offence with 6 receptions and 2 TDs. Most were for very short yardage, but he did as required. Marco Ottoni with a great highlight reel catch going up the field from the Snap and holding onto the ball for 3 steps before being “stripped” by the defender. Tough loss but they definitely made OAS work for things
Carmine’s POTW
- Stephen Harripersaud (OAO) 12-14-152-6 TDs
- Josh Levine (OAO) 3-48-3 TDs & 6 Tackles w/1 PD
- Sean Avraam (Spitfire) 20-24-246-6 TDs
- Eugene McLaren (PAZAZZ) 20-28-237-6TDs
- Rob Allen (PAZAZZ) 4-55-3 TDs & 3 Tackles 1 INT
- Brian Eudoxie (JMJ) 8-80-2 TDs & 6 Tackles
- Robbie Robinson (FPF) 17-21-204-5 TDs & 2 Tackles, 1 INT (PICK 6), 1 PD
- Lonnie Johnson (FPF) 6-109-3 TDs
- Kevin Wyeth (OAS) 8-65-4 TDs & 3 Tackles, 1 INT, 2 PD
- Jason Prince (OAS) 2-20-2 TDs, 2 tackles, 2 INTs, 2 PDs, 2 PICK 6s
Week 4 preview
Old Age Outlaws vs. O.A.S.
The “something has to give” match as we see two undefeated teams square off to start the week. This game also features the top defence, OAO, against the top offence in OAS. Of course, OAS also sports the #2 defence so they will have the edge in this one, IMHO. Cory Pecker is playing some great football at this point, but Kevin Wyeth has been a 1 man wrecking machine this season, even though he only really runs 2 patterns. I will not say what they are, but it is not that hard to figure out…LOL. Stephen Harripersaud is going to have to be his dink & dunk master in order to slow this game down and keep his team in it. Give me OAS for the win
Pacemakers vs. MTL Spitfire
For the second week in a row the Spitfire take on a J. Rossie. This time it is brother Jason, fresh off a frustrating loss to the above mentioned OAO. I think that Jason is going to do his best to prove that last week was a fluke and that he can still run the ball. The Spitfire rush is going to need to be awake. I also think that if they can keep Brockwell in check from going deep that they will really limit the options available to Rossie. For the Spitfire, they are coming off their best offensive showing of 2020 and QB Sean Avraam put together his best game of his season. He will need to repeat that performance if the Spitfire look to even their record at 2-2
Monster vs PFP
I look at this game and have so many questions. Will Andy Peterkin be there? If so, does he rush Robbie Robinson? He might be one of the few people in the division who can do so effectively. Where are JF LeClair and Kevin Wilson for Monster? Are they on vacation or not playing? KW is another person who can rush RR effectively. I think that you may see where I am headed with this. If Monster cannot get pressure on RR, then they are in for a long night. RR is in control of his offence right now and he is making defences play big time. He seems to find his “mismatch” early in the game and ride that receiver all night. While Monster have some good individual players, you will probably find them in zone more often than not so that might be a help for them. I think that Domenic Tosi will again need to step up on offence if Monster is going to win this game, otherwise it will go to FPF.
Grumpy Old X-Men vs. PAZAZZ
I do like the effort and attitude of the GOXM. They are truly a great bunch of guys and they are smiling and having fun out there. I do think that they are in for a rough ride in 2020 as they let Jordan Rossie learn at the helm. While he has had success in some of the lower divisions of FPF you cannot let the age factor fool you for 35+, the guys know what they are doing. PAZAZZ are coming off their best game where they finally saw Eugene McLaren use his legs and his best player, Rob Allen, more than he had in previous weeks. I really think this is their best chance at success. When in doubt Eugene needs to use those two weapons to move the chains, which is what I think that he will do in this game.
JMJ vs. Polvige
Our final match up sees the winless JMJ looking for answers against a strong Polvige squad. While Ryan Kastner is new to 35+, he is no stranger to FPF and is adapting to his new surroundings quite nicely. Unfortunately for JMJ they still have questions at the pivot position and Jon Moodie’s absence also affects their defence to boot. Look for Kastner to exploit that advantage if Moodie is not there to help keep the squad organized.
That’s all for today! Thanks for taking the time to read along.
