Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 2 Recap

Week 2 has now come and gone. Let’s take a quick peek at what happened, what we learned, what surprised us, and what will happen in the upcoming games ahead.

Still having issues trying to make any sort of intelligent predictions with the roster uncertainty. It would make things so much easier if teams would post their upcoming rosters ahead of time. Truly a nightmare to figure out what will happen when you have NO CLUE who is actually showing up!!

Thoughts & random opinions

  • Kevin Wyeth leads DA/B in TDs thrown. Big shock. Kevin Wyeth leads DA/B in INTS. ON DEFENCE!! Evidently someone wants a 2 WAY PLAYER trophy to add to his collection!

  • Gino DiFazio put up a 50 Burger in DC. Always fun to watch a team mate succeed. Of course, some of those points came from yet another Isiah Allard Pick 6 from the RUSHER position. Complete freak of nature

  • Stoics with a SHUT OUT in DC. I don’t care what level of ball…a shut out is a seriously cool thing for your defence. Especially when you consider how offence-friendly FPF is.

  • A-Town with 2 (TWO) pick 6s in their victory over the Longhorns. Defence again.

  • JYD vs. Backyard Bullies. 277 yards of offence combined between both teams. That is really not going to cut it.

Division A/B Week #1 review

  • Braves fall to the Outsiders 31-25

What I wrote: The Braves looked like the Braves in their opener. Jonathan Maheu was confident and accurate, as usual, and the Braves did not miss Georges Gariepy as much as they might have as they added M-A Lapointe and Jesse Dupuis on defence. For the Outsiders, last week was a tale of two halves. Everything clicked in the first half and things were not as effective after the break. Missing Serge Pilon obviously did not help. If the Braves get Georges back, and keep their new defensive additions, they are going to make life difficult for the Outsiders. I think that Kevin will be able to put up points and move the ball, but his scoring will have to come from outside the red zone due to the size of the Braves defence. Braves by 6.

What happened: Damn these rosters! When you take out your QB, and two-way monster, use your top receiver as QB in his place, bad things happen. The Braves were missing Jonathan Maheu, so JD Chevalier was at the pivot position. Guess what? He is not Jonathan Maheu. 2 INTs is not something you see beside the Braves QB stats. Kevin Wyeth continues his hot start and adds another defensive INT. Remember what I said about that chip on his shoulder….it will come back to bite many teams in the a$$ this year. J-C M-F (too long to type) with a monster game going off for 6-100-3 TDs. Welcome to DA!

  • #NR fall to YCSWU 41-34

What I wrote: Ah the battle of the acronyms! Roster issues affected both teams last week. What does this week hold in store? If Cory Pecker is back, then I think that this will be a fairly competitive game. His ability to buy time will definitely help his receiving corps. I still don’t think that it will be enough as Alex Holowach has assembled a really good squad this season. YCSWU for the win.

What happened: Game of the week for those of you who have yet to watch it. Cory Pecker was present for #NR and was on fire! Unfortunately, he ran into arm problems after marching up & down the field on his first two drives (both for TDs) and handed the ball off to Paul Lapierre. #NR now loses a HUGE offensive piece and their QB is not used to their offence. Like Ryan Kastner in Week 1, Paul does things differently than Cory. He likes to stand at 11 yards deep, drop back, and toss 30-yard balls. In order to do so he needs someone who can snap that ball. Watch the film. He was not at 11 and it played with his efficiency. He was off on many balls because plays developed quicker than normal. For YCSWU they got off to a rocket start and then played keep away in the second half. This is now 2 weeks in a row that they only play ½ game offensively. Alex Holowach spread the ball well, 5 different receivers found the end zone, but was not a dominant force. Danny D’Amour with a big game on defence with 2 INTs and a PICK 6.

  • BYOB are edged out by the 2 ½ Alkaholiks 32-31

What I wrote: Nothing learned about BYOB this season as they were victims of the scheduling issue last Wednesday. Matt Rene has an interesting squad to throw to, so they should be able to put up points. As for the 2 ½…they need to be able to finish drives with scores if they want to improve on last week’s performance. I know that Paul Lapierre will not let things repeat themselves. Carefully going with the drinkers this week.

What actually happened: As I mentioned, Paul was not letting his team lose this week. He led his team with 2 big TDs as they won on the almighty convert. Gents focus on those extra points as they can be the big difference in the game. Joey Taylor had a much more efficient second game as he finished 25-31. Only 168 yards on those 25 completions so his short game remains on par, but he will eventually have to stretch the field. Ball control is cool, but you need to be REALLY efficient if that is your strategy.

Matt Rene clicked well with his bug man, Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon, as they connected for 3 TDs on the evening. I really thought that Stephan Osman would play a bigger role, but it is still week one for this squad.

  • Lightweight surprise Jasmin N Sons 39-35

What I wrote: Who shows up for Lightweight this week? Is Anthony Vendrame back? Roster issues/concerns play such a large part of the early weeks in the schedule. If Simon Dagenais can be as efficient with the ball as he was last week then Lightweight will cause a tremendous amount of trouble for teams. I still think that they are lacking the offensive talent to compete, but we shall see. If Vendrame is there this week then I think that JNS will win by 2 scores.

What actually happened: Here we go again with the Revolving Roster Theme. Simon Dagenais has said that this will be the story of their season. A funny thing happened on the way to this game, he recruited two-way DEMON Alex Nadeau-Piuze to play. Schedule restrictions prevent ANP and FMP from playing in the Spring, but he is one hell of a pickup. He led the team with 5-91-2 TD numbers on O and tacked on an INT and 2 PDs on D. Instant impact is how I describe ANP. Simon Dagenais with another productive night as he went 20-29 with No INTS. The clean turnover sheet is a huge advantage. Frederic Viens had a nice night overall, 23-31 is nothing to shake your head at. He also used Anthony Vendrame as I thought he would (88 yards and 3 TDs). While he finished with similar yardage to Dagenais, he did toss that INT to ANP and that was the difference in this match.

  • Dream Killers edged by the Dirty Dawgs 25-24

What I wrote: Both teams open their season with this game as they also fell victim to the scheduling issue. Dirty Dawgs will have their perennial short bench and will lean on two-way monster, Dave Chityat. If you do not get pressure on Jeff Rosenblatt, then he can be dangerously effective as a QB. I think that Jeff will buy himself some time in this game, but the Dirty Dawgs take it on converts.

What happened: As I suspected, this came down to those dreaded Xtra Points. Dirty Dawgs were not great but did get on while the Dream Killers went empty on the night. Neither QB with a particularly impressive outing as they BOTH finished 14-26 with 4 TDs and 1 INT. Makes you wonder when you see the identical stat line. Dave Chityat (no shock) and Jordan Panetta led the way for the Dirty Dawgs as they both finished with 5 rec and 2 TDs. Jeff Rosenblatt spread things out a tad more evenly, but big numbers were not to be had on this evening. Travis Moses led the team with 2 TDs.

  • Dad Bod disappoint against the Alpha-Ts 30-28

What I wrote: Dad Bod were the 4th team to not play last week and have been waiting to get their season started. They kick it off against an Alpha-Ts team who looked good in Week 1 but who did not get the W. I really think that the Dad Bods have too much talent, across the board, for the T’s to match up with. If they can control their emotional side, then they will win their season opener.

What happened: The Dad Bod wet the bed in this one. Chatted with Sean Avraam and he blamed rust for their poor effort. With the talent that the has in front of him he cannot afford to not win the games against the teams they should beat. Nothing against the Alpha-Ts, but this should have gone the other way. Avraam finished with a very pedestrian 159 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Simply not going to get it done at this level with those #s. Jesse Dupuis did not really fare much better going 20-27 with 187 yards and only 2 TDs. The BIG difference was that Dupuis chipped in 49 rushing yards and 2 more TDs. They also converted 2 Xtra Points to the goose egg on converts from Dad Bod. A tough first outing for the Dad Bod but they need to shake the rust quickly in this crazy division.

THE WEEK AHEAD

  • Alpha-Ts host the Dirty Dawgs

The Alpha-Ts have done well thus far with 3 out of 4 points gained. Definitely playing better than I assumed they would after making the jump. I originally had them at 0-2 so hats off to Jesse Dupuis and the group. Dirty Dawgs opened with a squeaker last week. Both QBs in this game are mobile and cause problems for the opposing rushers. While Ryan Lelinowski looks to buy time, Dupuis looks to gain yards, and that will be the difference. Early in the season but I am becoming a fan of the boys in orange.

  • 2 ½ Alkaholiks vs Jasmin N Sons

Such a tough call this week. 2 ½ have really not impressed in either game. Look at their roster and they should be doing better. JNS got fooled by Lightweight and ANP last week. It was the first game for Fred Viens and Anthony Vendrame and they performed well. Fred is still not pushing the ball downfield yet, but I think that he will eventually adapt. JNS for the win in this one.

  • Braves vs YCSWU

Game of the week if everyone is there. These are the 2 most complete rosters in the division and, those dreaded words, if everyone is there, will be a heck of a match. Chemistry and size go to the Braves, overall speed to YXCWU. Hard to ever pick against the Braves if they have their full squad.

  • #NR vs Dad Bod

I cannot buy a break in picking games. #NR is a completely different beast without Cory Pecker. The talent is there but he brings a swagger to his offence. Arm problems plagued him last week. If you take him away, you lose Paul Lapierre as your center. Massive (not just literally) shift in your offence. For Dad Bod, is the rust gone? AJ Gomes and Vinny Gualano have the speed to take the top off any defence, but Sean Avraam needs to have the confidence to use them. If Cory plays, then #NR wins the game. If not, the nod goes to the Dad Bod.

  • Outsiders vs BYOB

Keven Wyeth looks like a man on a mission thus far. While his team is not up to his usual standards, he is asserting himself as the top player in the top division and doing it on both sides of the ball. BYOB had a tough loss in their first game and I expect Stephan Osman to have a plan for Serge Pilon. The Outsiders have proven to be a diverse enough squad to overcome that focus and should walk away with the W.

  • Lightweight vs. the Dream Killers

So, who does Simon Dagenais bring out this week? He seems to be in GM mode a la Gino DiFazio. Really doing a superb job thus far. Dream Killers had a tough loss last week, those pesky PATs, and do not have an easy match up this week. Jeff Rosenblatt should be able to move the ball but Jad Aridi will be catching balls for the opposing QB this season and will make the difference in this game. Again, I think this will come down to converts with Lightweight taking the game
