Carmine’s Coffin Corner | Div A/B Week 6 Recap
Week 6 is in the books. Time to take a look at what happened, see if I was completely out to lunch with my choices last week, and take a glance at what lies ahead for week 7 in this whacky division. A few random league-wide thoughts will also be shared. The farther into the season we progress the more that I begin to doubt my ability to ever understand the Spring Season
I am simply copy/pasting my frustrations with attempting to decipher the possibilities due to all of the roster movement. Things continue to be crazy with the inter-division play as we have a handful of players who must choose which team they will play for.
Thoughts & random opinions (league wide)
- – Kevin Wyeth continues to prove why he has all of the hardware. He continues his assault on defences this Spring. I am simply leaving this comment here for the rest of the season
- – A much better week for the offences in DA/B as 8 teams, of 12, topped the 30-point mark.
- – Sean Avraam and Mat Rene putting up big numbers as they attempt to rally their teams and spark some victories. Neither succeeded but at least they are moving the ball.
- – Is it just me or does anyone else find it weird to see the same names TWICE in the stat columns? Paul Lapierre is #1 (2 ½ Alkaholiks) and #5 (#NR) on the Receivers list. Another comment that I am simply leaving here until it no longer applies!
- – AJ Gomes got his picture removed from the Missing Milk Carton section as he had his best game of the season so far.
- – Jesse Dupuis continues to show his dual-threat ability as he continues to drive Rushers nuts
Division A/B Week #6 review
Jasmin N Sons put the Dream Killers to sleep 43-24
What I wrote: The Dream Killers got their first win of the season last week in dramatic fashion by knocking off the Outsiders. Jeff Rosenblatt with a night to remember indeed. Having said that, this team has rotated the QB spot thus far which really does not help with stability. Jeff will continue their streak of alternating QBs every two games as he suits up this week. JNS had a convincing win over the Dirty Dawgs and had a great offensive showing against YCSWU the week prior. I like how Frederic Viens is figuring out the offensive pieces to his puzzle, because like so many other teams, it is a different puzzle each week. If he gets his full squad out (Pat Jerome, Tam Vilyadeth, Anthony Vendrame) then they are going to be a tough out. M-A Viens remains the rock of the offence but Frederic needs the others around him to really make things happen. I think that this trend continues, and they win a high-scoring affair.
What actually happened: Frederic Viens continues with the hot hand. Avery efficient 18-22 with 6TDs as he finally exploits that the talent that is Anthony Vendrame, who found the end zone 3 times amongst his 7 catches. Newcomer, Jordan Rwiyamilira, put up the big yardage on this evening as he finished with 7 yards on his 4 catches. Anthony Brisebois has a strong 2-way game finishing with 3 -50-1 TD on offence and chipping in 3 tackles/1 INT on defence. Jeff Rosenblatt was unable to duplicate the success of his previous week as he threw 2 INTs and only finished with 4 TDs. Unless your defence finds the endzone as well that will not generally win you many games.
Dirty Dawgs sent to the kennel by the 2 ½ Alkaholiks 28-12
What I wrote: Hopefully the DD have spent the past week recruiting players and we will not see any last-minute FB posts looking for help! This team has talent on their roster, but their roster has not been present. SO hard to build any continuity or rhythm when you are continually shuffling the deck. 2 ½ must be breathing a sigh of relief as they get their QB back after 2 weeks of gallivanting around Greece. This offence is built around Joey Taylor’s strengths and while his replacement put up big yardage, they are not built to go score for score with the top offences. Joey does a great job of slowing things down and keeping his team involved. I look for them to even their record this week.
What actually happened: ah those game day FB posts that are quickly becoming the rule rather than the exception. 2 ½ welcomed back their QB and he wasted no time going back to the “Joey Taylor” dink & dunk that can drive defences nuts but has proven to be so effective. JT finished 23-30-209 with 4TDs and O INTs. Nice, calm, clean, ball-control offence. Paul Lapierre continues to be the favorite target for whomever throws the ball on this squad adding 8 more receptions and now leads DA/B in both Receptions & Yards. For the Dirty Dawgs the only shining light was Brian Eudoxie. Normally known as a top-notch rusher he lit things up on offence with 6 receptions for 73 yards
Dad Bod lose at the last moment to the Outsiders 34-33
What I wrote: Dad Bod have won ugly this season but somehow sit at 3-2. Vinny Gualano finally showed up last week and demonstrated why he can be one of the top players in FPF when he wants to. Sean Avraam continues to frustrate me as a prognosticator with his inconsistencies. Watched him last week and he seems to be second guessing his own play calling at times. Go with the call and throw the ball! On the flip side will be a very annoyed Outsiders squad. Kevin Wyeth had a near-flawless outing last week and still lost the game. Pat Jerome had the chance to shut things down and did not do it. Look for these two to have HUGE games on Monday night. Outsiders with the win.
What actually happened: Let’s see. Sean Avraam be more decisive…check. Kevin Wyeth be dominant when need be…check. Pat Jerome have an impact…check. The “Amber Alert” for AJ Gomes can be called off as he finally came out to play (113 yards & 2 TDs). Watch the game film on this one for more details. While Kevin made some uncharacteristic errors, when the chips were down, he “doubled down’ and pull out the victory. Pat Jerome was the top dog finishing with 3 TDs and 107 yards. Serge Pilon absent? Hey Don Shepherd? Can you come out and catch 8 balls for me?? LOL
YCSWU edge the Braves 39-33
What I wrote: Game of the Week material here. Need to add that dreaded caveat “if both rosters are there.” YCSWU continues to pour on the offence. Alex Holowach has looked really good so far and he has a multitude of offensive weapons around him. This is a team built to score, only team over 200 points this season, but they also give up a bunch of points. They really remind of the Edmonton Oilers of the ‘80s, playing fire wagon hockey and winning games 7-5. They will be faced by the top defence in the division, don’t let the Dad Bod PA fool you, the Braves are THE top defence. Their only Achilles heel thus far has been missing players on occasion. Their one loss has an asterisks (*) next to it as Jonathan Maheu was absent. Last week was Georges Gariepy. When everyone is there, the Braves remain the top team. Not as fun to watch as YCSWU, but they get the job done.
What actually happened: those list words came to light as the Braves were without their two-way MONSTER, Georges Gariepy, for the second straight week. Huge impact as he plays such a vital role for this squad. Not to take away anything from the YCSWU squad in any way, but this result has an asterisk next to it in my mind. Both QBs go 19-33 with almost identical yardage. The extra possession by YCSWU proves to be the difference in the game. Justin McLean continues his mid-season push for the ROTY award with 8-99-2 TD numbers on the evening. For the Braves it was defensive stalwart, Marc-Andre Lapointe, who stepped up with 2 big TD receptions.
Lightweight get rebounded by #NR 38-24
What I wrote: The bubble burst last week for Lightweight as they lost their first game of the season. The revolving roster finally caught up to them. Does he have any surprises up his sleeve for this week? This has been a revolving door offence for Simon Dagenais thus far. 13 players have caught a pass and only 2 receivers have hit double digits for receptions. Those 2 have caught 50% of Simon’s completions so far. Not rocket science to figure out where the ball is going. #NR has also been plagued by roster issues. They sit at 1-4 but have faced the Braves twice, YCSWU, and the Outsiders. Not an easy schedule so far. I think that they are the top DB team playing. Unfortunately, they find themselves in DA. This week they match off against a DB team and will double their win total.
What actually happened: The honeymoon seems to have come to an end for Lightweight. An amazing start to the season, with some inspired QB play from Simon Dagenais, got them out of the gate early and quickly. It will definitely get them into the playoffs. Unfortunately, they are in a stretch of games where their weaknesses get exposed. I said that #NR would be the top DB team if they were in that division. When facing the DB teams, I fully expect them to walk away with the W each time. Cory Pecker finished 17-20 for 252 yards and 6 TDs. However, 2 of his 3 INTs landed in the hands of Lightweight so he was not perfect on this evening. Getting Travis Moses back helped but having Jeremy Anderson go off for 102 yards and 3 TDs helped more. Dexter Linton with a big game on D with 6 tackles and an INT
Alpha-T’s come back against BYOB 39-38
What I wrote: Ah the rematch. A scheduling quirk has these teams playing each other in back to back week. So, was last week an off week for the Men in Orange or did the loss of Mike Pierrecin make that much of a difference for Jesse Dupuis? Time will tell. If Mike is back this week then their offence will continue to roll. His attitude and positivity are infectious, and he makes play after play for this team. On the other side we have a BYOB squad on a bit of a roll. They have lost a couple of really close games (1 & 2 pts) and could easily by 4-1 at this point, in spite of their early inconsistent play. Mathieu Rene has put together back-to-back solid games and, very quietly, Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon has snuck up into the 2-Way Player race. Normally the big man is hard to overlook but he has not been that flashy thus far, simply effective. I really don’t see Jesse Dupuis being that off in back to back games. Look for the Men in Orange to take the rematch but it will be a close score.
What actually happened: Close score indeed. Both QBs with very strong, efficient games. Jesse Dupuis making up for the difference in passing yardage with his legs. He did an excellent job of spreading the ball as all 5 of his receivers had at least 4 receptions. Balance like that is extremely hard to defend against. Mathieu Rene had his 3rd straight strong game. Hopefully this will pay off for them before the end of the season. He also spread things around with 5 different receivers finding the end zone.
Carmine’s Players of the Week
Jesse Dupuis 22/25/229 with 5 TDs & 4/29 1 TD rushing & 3 Tackles – 1 INT on defence
Justin McLean 8-99 2 TDs & an INT on defence
AJ Gomes 5-113 2 TDs and an INT on defence
Pat Jerome 7-107 3 TDs and 4 Tackles on D
The week ahead
5/6 last week with the off game containing an asterisk…hmm not bad
Dirty Dawgs host #NR
#NR is in the part of the schedule where they get to take on the DB teams and get back in sync. I look for Cory Pecker to continue his efficient season against the MTM defence played by the Dirty Dawgs. As for the Dirty Dawgs, a week without a FB advertisement would be a cool thing.
Outsiders host 2 ½ Alkaholiks
Conventional vs. Unorthodox. The contrast in QB styles in this game is actually quite comical although both are quite efficient at what they do. While Kevin should not have many issues in scoring against the 2 ½ defence, how many opportunities he gets will be determined by Joey Taylor who will be slowing this game WAY down. Look for the Outsiders to get the W but not by that many points.
Braves host Lightweight
The ceiling continues to come crashing down for Lightweight. Happy that they did much better than I expected but the past few weeks have definitely played out as I though their season would flow. I give them credit for stepping up into the void, but the Braves are going to take this game regardless of who is missing from their roster.
Jasmin N Sons host BYOB
The GOTW in my mind. Both QBs are playing really good ball right now. Frederic Viens is getting rewarded and Mathieu Rene is not. Look for them both to crack 30 points in this game with Anthony Vendrame being the difference maker.
Dream Killer host Dad Bod
Both QBs had back to back great games against the Outsiders, channeling their Inner Kevin Wyeth, match up against the HoF QB stride for stride. Unfortunately, the rest of their body of work has not been as impressive. Avraam has the better squad around him, and we have finally seen signs of Gualano and Gomes coming to life. Rosenblatt can control the tempo of the game a bit better. Watch this one come down to converts with Dad Bod slipping away with the W
YCSWU host the Alpha-T’s
Alpha-T’s seem to be the team to beat in DB. Unfortunately for them, YCSWU do not need any criteria and simply remain THE TEAM TO BEAT. YCSWU give up both points and yards so this will be a bit of a shootout. Thankfully for them their offence, led by QBOTY candidate, Alex Holowach, is up for the challenge.
