Bombsquad’s Breakdwon (Div A & B) – Week 10

THAT’S IT!!!! The season is done. All has come to pass and much as we have expected it to unfold. The finals are set in the 3 team only Div A but what a finals it will be. We shall discuss that more in the coming weeks. The matchups are set for Div B as well and that we shall get to in a moment. But for now, let us go back to last week’s regular season action….one last time.

Countdown to detonation

5. DA Finest clinched the jersey choice for the finals as they defeated the shorthanded Alkaholiks 48-34. This game really did mean nothing except who chooses what colour to wear in the finals. So it was not surprising to see both squads missing a player or 2….or 4. Paul Lapierre had a mediocre game. Tossing 4 TD’s and running for 1 as well while throwing 1 interception. Serge Pilon Jr. had 5 grabs for 83 yards and 2 TD’s while Godfrey Abu also had 2 TD’s. On the other side, Kevin Wyeth completed his epic season with 7 TD’s for 250 yards. Rochdi “Hair” Benabdelkader had a monster game with 7 receptions for 145 yards and 4 TD’s giving him 20 on the season. Now let’s see how this plays out in the finals.

4. The Rainmakers end their disappointing season with a loss to AAA 46-41. Francois Lebeau was on fire with 7 TD’s and 1 INT against a struggling Rainmakers defense. Marc-Andre Lebeau had another big game with 8 catches for 86 yards and 3 scores. On the other side, so ended a very forgettable Rainmakers season as they are surely disappointed with the outcome. Although this squad has always had issues with fielding the same squad week in and week out every summer, they usually are able to scrape by. I guess with Div A being so thin, there was less room for error and so the book has closed on this year.

3. Well no one forfeited and we had a game. And the Jonesers took down a Karim Chaoual-led Triple Sixers squad 32-26. Ryan Lelinowski took the QB reins in hand with 215 yards passing and 4 TD’s while running for another. He spread the ball across the field hitting 4 different receivers for scores. Karim Chaoual returned to try and lead his team into the playoffs.  He used his favorite target J.F. Marcotte to the tune of 10 grabs for 54 yards and 2 TD’s. That is 2 of his 4 TD total. They did not turn the ball over with turnovers but they definitely did on downs which is where the difference was. The Jonesers move on to the playoffs.

2. The Mercenaries chop down the Maniax again 33-24. Rapha Beladjat had another rough day at the office with 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. J.R. Verger once again was a force with both TD’s and a catch for the ages over the outstretched hands of Serge Moumdjian. Gregory Lavaud rounded out the scoring with a pick 6. But the Mercs did what they had to do to win the game. Gino Di Fazio threw for 209 yards with 5 TD’s and 1 INT. Surprisingly Carmine Pollice did not catch any of the TD’s as Verger did a solid job covering the Div B receptions leader. But the Mercs D took care of business while Di Fazio spread the ball and the scoring. Now these teams face each other for the third week in a row only this time it will be do or die.

1. In a surprising turn of events, Daron World Wide took down the Roosters & Donkeys 32-20. Danny “Scoop” Gentile had a rough game. Completing barely 50% of his passes while throwing 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s limping into the playoffs. Given Gentile’s playoff history, is R&D sweating a little? Meanwhile, Alex Lever stepped up with 211 yards passing, 5 TD’s and 1 interception. He got his entire offence involved as each receiver had at least 4 catches and Anthony Comeau getting as many as 9. This has got to be a big win moving into the playoffs for DWW. They lost to this team only a week earlier giving up 47 points only to return this week and give up 20 to the top team in the division. Great game boys.

BOOM!!! Just like the regular season, BAM!!! It’s done.

So for the final time this year, I shall hand out the weekly awards for best individual performance…and the winners are…

Div A

My Golden Boy has to be the hairy one, Rochdi Benabdelkader and his 7 grabs for 115 yards and 4 TD’s. Big game!

My SHOWSTOPPA for the week is Garret Taylor who capped off his season with yet another interception against a very good Alks squad. Nice grab!

Div B

My Golden Boy for the week is Marc-Andre Lebeau who had a huge game against a Div A opponent. 8 catches for 86 yards and 3 TD’s….MONSTER game!!!!

My SHOWSTOPPA this week is the entire Daron World Wide defense for some great adjustments from last week’s loss. As mentioned earlier, they gave up 47 last week and a meager 20 this week to the top squad.

I will take some time this week to comment on the season’s individual award winners for both divisions.

I will start with Div B.

Danny “Scoop” Gentile had an amazing season with 50 TD’s, 9 INT’s and 2035 yards. All this and he moved up a division. That is amazing. I am not sure what Scoop would say but I know early in the season, he had a long talk with Kevin Wyeth. Since that conversation there has been an increase in the points scored for R&D. Just saying…

Receiver of the season is Jean-Richard Verger who is a beast. 44 receptions for 729 yards and 21 TD’s. This guy is almost unstoppable. He has the size to box you out and the hops to out jump you. We will definitely being seeing more from him in the coming seasons if he can stay healthy.

Defensive player of the season is Giovanni Lanni, not to be confused with Antonio Lanni, right Antonio? 40 tackles, 5 interceptions including a pick 6. Gianni is a very physical and motivated player. He has a huge heart and definitely one of the best flaggers in FPF along with his brother. He makes great reads and helps his defense stay one of the best in the league. Congrats.

Two-Way player of the season is Marc-Andre Lebeau and this is much deserved as he is the heart and soul of the AAA team. Marc always comes to play his best no matter what role he is asked to fill and his stats speak for themselves. 20 TD’s on 60 receptions and 609 yards with 26 tackles and 4 interceptions. You cannot say enough about how much a player like this brings to his team and I know the entire AAA squad appreciates it.

Now for Div A. Which only had 3 teams this season, and it seems we have a sweep of the awards.

QB of the season is Kevin Wyeth. We all knew this was coming as he threw for 66 touchdowns and 2451 yards with a completion percentage of 75.6% and a QB rating at an insane 139.9. Piecing together his greatest season yet (although there were many crossover games) Wyeth made this season happen with different players on his offense week to week. He even ran for 2 TD’s as well. Nothing more can be said that hasn’t been said already. Currently the top player in all of FPF by far.

Receiv”Hair” of the season: Rochdi Benabdelkader, who overcame injuries over the last few seasons only to return to top form with 58 receptions for 582 yards and 20 TD’s on a very talented DA Finest offense. Sure Rochdi benefits from certain teammates taking his coverage away from him (cough, cough) but nothing can change the numbers he put up and the season he had. Still 1 of the best in the game on either side of the ball. Congrats HAIR!!!!

Defensive player of the season is Garret Taylor who recorded 19 tackles, 4 INT’s (1 pick 6) and 5 passes defended. Garret has always been a good defender, one of the best in the league. But can I say he is getting better? Scary thought but true. He covers most of the field like his big brother and he keeps getting better and better on offense as well. I am sure there is a Two-Way player award somewhere in his future.

Finally Two-Way player of the season is Akked Moore. Akked managed 34 grabs, 427 yards, 9 TD’s, 18 tackles, 4 interception and 2 passes defended….all in 8 games!!!! Akked is known around the league and his numbers speak volumes for how he has evolved as a player. Akked can dominate a game on either side of the ball. A nightmare to cover and can intercept a ball anywhere near his wheelhouse. He continues to shine season after season. No wonder he is in the Hall of Fame.

Speaking of which, anyone notice that besides the sweep by DA Finest, 3 of the winners are all FPF H.O.F.? Just saying. Congrats to all the winners for a great season that has entertained us all.

Now for the playoff previews.

For the third time in a row, the Mercenaries face the Maniax. Now the Mercs have just beaten the Maniax the last 2 weeks. But they say one of the hardest things to do in a season is beat the same team 3 times. Not to mentions beat them 3 consecutive weeks in a row. This will be a very difficult matchup. The Maniax need to come up with a game plan to defeat the Mercs. That is unless they knew they were making the playoffs and they are saving their true strategy for the playoffs. I do not believe that is the case. They need to find a way to isolate the weak points on the Mercs defense and exploit it. But the Mercs have a savvy veteran squad. As for the Mercs, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. QB Di Fazio just needs to avoid having a let-down game. I think the Mercs will continue along the path they started in facing the Maniax and I see them winning this game.

Daron World Wide face the Jonesers who might have difficulties fielding a team for this matchup. As for Daron World Wide, they are on a high after defeating the top dawg in Div B R&D. They have proven they can make adjustments. Earlier this season they held the Jonesers to a single score in defeating them. Their only concern was Ryan Leliknowski but I am pretty sure he will be throwing and not receiving which will reduce their concerns. The Jonesers are happy to make it in. But an inconsistent roster has plagued them the entire season. Not to mention QB issues.  I do not believe the Jonesers can pull it all together in 1 week and take down a flying DWW team who are firing on all cylinders. I am not even sure it will be a close game. I am taking Daron World Wide for the win.

The real season is here,

Playoffs start this week.

Time to step up,

As the strong defeat meek.

For where will be,

When Aug 11 rolls round.

On the schedule to play,

You want your team name down.

Once again that is it for another Breakdown. You can email me at [email protected] or tweet me @DonaldWShepherd with your thoughts on the playoffs and how bad Moe’s haircut is since we all now know he never reads the bottom of the page. Until then, another week has been defused.
